Description

The story centers on a woman, her friends, and the people she would encounter on her voyage between two realms. The woman's personal experience mirrors the struggle of a trauma victim post experiencing trauma, and through this frame of mind, the woman explores the realities of fleeing from the physical world to a realm that, unknowing to her, was truly the isle of dead men walking.

Beryl, both as a girl and as a woman, had never really had luck with men; all she had ever been able to do was attract or be attracted to the vile ones. This explains her unfortunate experiences of being raped at an early age and having to endure domestic violence during her marriage. These misfortunes do not end there. Beryl also had to deal with the loss of a child and a deadly sickness that nearly claimed her life.

Life in the reality is much different from her beautiful fantasies.  Like Beryl, her best friends Nicole, Nico and Claudia are faced with difficult choices that threaten their loyalty and attempt to demean their platonic love. Beryl’s ex-husband still remains an active nightmare from her past, into her present, and his twisted machinations is also very much at play in her future. The ex-husband of Beryl brings a lot of drama, heartache, and damaged self-esteem.

Feeling trapped in the stillness of time in her present and haunted by her past, Beryl makes the unanimous decision to go to a place where dreams were valid and she could find peace within herself. A study of the island's spiritual significance indicated that its water primarily symbolizes reawakened emotions, fresh starts, and purification. Beryl also makes the decision to pen a riveting book about the island where she had sought refuge.

On the island, Beryl falls in love with a mysterious man Seth, whom she may have known in her life outside the island but has no recognition of. Despite never hitting a woman in his previous life, Seth also mistreated women emotionally by toying with their feelings and manipulating them, most especially his lovely wife Rebecca. Seth gets into a car accident with a lover, which would have been a simple way to avoid feeling terrible about destroying the woman who loved him more than anything in the world, except that he wounded up on an island where he would have to seek redemption in a mystical body.

Beryl, the incredible woman, appears as the first person to visit the island in her physical form. Upon arriving on the island, her first thought was what she could offer to the ocean to experience its healing powers, but the kindhearted woman didn’t have to do too much, the Island and its inhabitants greatly adored her.

Given that Beryl and Seth had their own issues to work through, their meeting was predestined and could not be prevented. The most significant decision of Beryl's life may need to be made. One that, in the name of love, may eventually cost her life.

I found this story to be very interesting. I think the description of the book and the cover really work with the books content. These characters are loveable, and I feel needed in a time of craziness in our world. A lovely book, for the dreamers and well wishers. Thank you Maryam Monika Sailu for the chance to read your book early, and trusting your arc readers with this novel. I look forward to more stuff from her!

I really like this story and the way that an island makes dreams come true. The friend group was funny and adorable, I loved their friendship dynamic and how they came across as more like family than friends. The story flowed beautifully and usually left me with my own questions. The FMC is suffering from her personal trauma and it was interesting for me to read since I suffer from my own trauma. This book definitely made me think and honestly a bit emotional but I liked it. Thank you to NetGalley for sending me this ARC.
