Description

Bound by blood and driven by desire, Arson’s fate teeters on the edge.

Orphaned at birth and cast adrift on the unforgiving sea, Arson and his three brothers are discovered by Haus LinGor, a bitter old man who seeks to amass wealth and power for his family. He adopts the four “devils” despite their strange, pointed ears and raises them as lethal assassins that slaughter any who oppose him. Forged in the crucible of Haus’s ambition, the quadruplets know nothing of their own origins and little of life beyond their grisly duties.

When a chance remark reveals that Arson and his brothers are actually elves, Haus takes them on a perilous journey to Norr, the elven kingdom, in search of suitable brides. His plan: to breed an army of so-called devils that will secure the LinGor legacy for all time.

But beneath the towering canopy of Norr’s enchanted forest, Arson is separated from his brothers and taken prisoner. In the custody of a beautiful Norrian princess, he finds himself at a crossroads teeming with peril and opportunity, torn between his loyalty to his family and his newly awakened instincts as an elf. Heart ablaze with desire, Arson conceives a daring gambit to seize the princess’s handmaiden as his wife…or perhaps the princess herself.

A Basket of Devils weaves a tragic tapestry of enemies-to-lovers romance, action-adventure, and a dash of dark fantasy. This gripping prequel to J.C. Hartcarver’s Sufferborn series unveils the history of the Overseas Taint, an ancient menace seeping into the sanctuary of the Norr elves. It can be read as either a standalone novel or as the opening of a poignant generational saga.

This was a great book, a universe that can be expanded greatly! It’s such a good fanasty book with elves of different origins. Considering it’s a short book, there is much that it covers and it creates a new world that will be new to many readers.

I also really like the visuals for each chapter additionally the chapter names, small but little things that pull the book together.

I personally enjoy shorter chapters but the longer chapters did not feel like it took ages to get through since it was so captivating.

Overall such a good book - 8.5/10

So my most recent book is a genre that I don’t normally dive into but figured I’d give a try. A Basket of Devils by J.C. Hartcarver is a Dark Fantasy Romance novel with an enemies-to-lovers type of story. It focuses on an elf named Arson raised by a human with his three brothers as assassins. They find their lives changed when they learn they are elves and decide to find wives in the far away kingdom of Norr. The rules are different there leading them to conflict as they are not welcomed because of a cursed bloodline that they possibly carry known as the Overseas Taint. As this is a prequel book and the start of a new series from this author, it worked out as a perfect starting point for me as I learned about the kingdom of Norr and found myself loving the world-building the more I got into it. I also found myself caring for the characters and invested in the decisions they made along the way. For those of you looking for it, this book also has plenty of steamy moments and while without spoiling I’ll say there’s a bitter ending, I'm excited to see where this story goes and probably will look into the original Sufferborn trilogy after this. A Basket of Devils by J.C. Hartcarver is out today.
