Description
A heartfelt short story set during the American Civil War
During the Civil War, the poet Walt Whitman volunteered in army hospitals in Washington tending to sick and wounded soldiers. This short story imagines one of these patients, Private Nathaniel Gwynnett of the 97th New York Volunteer Infantry, writing to Whitman after returning to his regiment. Attempting to turn their brief acquaintance into friendship, Nathaniel writes about army life and a looted copy of Leaves of Grass.
Advance Praise
"Letters to Whitman: A Short Story by Margo Laurie is a moving, brilliantly conceived short piece imaginatively composed of a Union soldier’s Civil War letters from hospitals and battlefields to Walt Whitman...a must-read for anyone with an interest in the Civil War" - Readers' Favorite
