This was an exciting tale of treacherous destinies and unexpected alliances. The story follows Klara, heir to Hell and the Dark Forest of Malum, who finds herself unwillingly thrust into the role of High Queen, with her own guardians seeking her downfall. She is faced with a threat to her life, leaving her with the only choice of fleeing to a realm untouched by Dark Magic. But her escape is definitely not simple.

The characters were diverse and intriguing, each with their own unique talents and motives. The cast of characters adds depth and complexity to the narrative.

As the story unfolds, suspense and tension is masterfully crafted, and there is a sense of unpredictability of destiny that plays a role in keeping you engaged. The writing style was engaging and evocative, making it easy to immerse herself in the capitvating world that Callaghan has spun.

This was a page-turner and it delves into deeper themes of power, choice, and the consequences of actions. In the end, the book sort of reminds us that destiny has a way of catching up with even the most reluctant heroes.

First time I've read anything by this author and I'm happy to say that I loved it , it had me laughing in some parts, cheering in others , and the characters themselves and their attitudes is what made the story ,

Klara, the heir of Lucifer, who endures a life of torment and captivity, yearning for nothing more than liberation from the burdens that relentlessly plague her. What sets her apart is her compassionate heart, marked by an unwavering sense of justice for the denizens of Malum, a dilapidated realm inhabited by those who don't belong to Hell or the Fae realm.

As her existence becomes increasingly imperiled by her guardians, who harbor deadly intentions, Klara embarks on a perilous journey to escape and offer aid to those who share her forsaken world.

“Crowned A Traitor” by Kate Callaghan was so much better than I thought it would be. It reminded me of a spooky version of Coraline and Tim Burton stories, with things like spider webs that stitch her back together and her unbelievable powers of not dying. It has so many creatures that I never usually see mixed like Christian demons and angels, but also creatures that are rarely in fantasy books like Leprechauns. I adored every second of the book and the love story that was happening. I will definitely be reading more books in the series. 5 out of 5 stars.

Wow, Kate did it again. This is the 2nd book I've read from her, and this one was a whole other genre. That just shows me that she can write good books in any genre.

Klara was such a relatable character that I just want to return to this world to read more about her.

I liked all the plot-twists at the end of the book. They kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

What happens when the heir of Lucifer doesn’t want to claim her throne?! All havoc is let loose! I really enjoyed the plot of this book. I didn’t guess the plot twist which was nice for me as i usually figure them out pretty easily. Overall this book kept me on my toes and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books.

With so many books that I enjoyed referenced in the first line of the description, there was no way I wasn't going to pick this up. It was a little on the younger side of YA for me, but that doesn't mean it was bad. I would just liked a heads up on it really.

That being said, it was a good, fun read.

This book was one the most interesting YA Dark Fantasy books I've ever read!!

I started getting really into it by chapter 2 and I couldn't stop reading at this point. It's not a super long book. It only has 20 chapters and the chapters aren't long. So it made reading quite doable

I was at first really interested d in reading this book just by the title and the cover is just beautiful! I had no idea what it was going to be about but I will say that I wasn't disappointed

The book has really great quotes!! It just speaks to you!

This book has its own universe. There's a map and everything too! The characters and different lands are described perfectly and everything was so clear.

I liked that the book talks about "Eve" and "Lucifer" and "Lilith" and "Lokey" and I love that they're portrayed as royalty. The fact that there were different types of creatures involved as well was just .. beautiful. I loved the whole thing!!!!

For those who have watched the show Lucifer and LOVED IT, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. This book was absolutely made for us Lucifer fans

I just loved the ending. How everything fell into place at the end was just beautiful!

I loved this book. Thank you for giving me the chance of reading this one! Beautifully written!

Crowned a Traitor invites readers into a compelling narrative, following the daughter of Lucifer as she endeavors to escape the weighty responsibilities that come with her lineage. While the story unfolds with several unexpected twists that add depth and intrigue, the initial pacing might leave some readers wishing for a quicker start. Despite this, the characters shine with relatability and charm, drawing the audience into their world. The protagonist's journey is both enjoyable and thought-provoking, and the narrative successfully weaves an engaging tale of rebellion and self-discovery. Ultimately, Crowned a Traitor's slower beginning is overshadowed by its well-crafted plot and endearing characters, making it a satisfying read for those seeking a fresh take on supernatural struggles and familial expectations.

Book Review 📚
Crowned A Traitor by Kate Callaghan - 4/5 ⭐

I had absolutely no clue that this book followed the daughter of Lucifer! I probably would of read it so much quicker if I had of known that. Anyway, that was a huge positive for me. Loved it.

Nothing is as it seems in Crowned a Traitor. So many twists and turn coming out of the woodwork, it took my breath away each and every time. There was nothing predictable or obvious about the plot at all. It's a huge dark fantasy book and I can't get over it.

My only pet peeve with this book was the ending. I just wanted it to go on and on, so to me the ending felt a little rushed. But it didn't effect my overall view of the book. It was absolutely brilliant and I'll be shouting about it for a while! It's definitely a YA but as an almost 33 year old, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Books Go Social for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.

This story surpassed my expectations, resembling a Tim Burton film in written form. Klara, heir to Lucifer, battles torment and captivity in Malum, a realm between Hell and the Fae. Facing deadly threats, she embarks on a perilous journey, encountering a unique mix of creatures. The story captivated me throughout. Eagerly anticipating more from this series.

*4.75 stars*

This is Book one of this series and told in third person POV. While I throughly enjoy books in this view, as I did this one, I tend to not connect with the characters on a level that totally captures me.

I will admit. I started this book a couple times and had to set it back down. The beginning didn’t capture my interest past the first couple pages those times. BUT, I still couldn’t get the blurb out of my head. So I gave it a go, the third times the charm as they say right?

In this instance, it was true. After I got further into the book, I found myself needing to know what happened next and mesmerized by the details of everything.

When I got this book, I didn’t realize that it was “special edition cover” of this story. I was looking at Kate Callaghan’s Amazon page and realized this was written before. The first edition said it had more pages, while that could possibly mean just information about the author and her other stories, I do wonder if it has more backstory on characters or events.

I liked the story and the character development for Klara was really great. I do wish I would’ve seen more of a ruthless side to Lucifer though. I felt like he wasn’t represented as he deserved. I understand that this story is targeted for YA 13-18, but considering some of the other things that were mentioned and described in the story, Lucifer could’ve been more.

I also would’ve liked some things to have more backstory descriptions and make me feel like I was right in the thick of things with Klara instead of just being told of what happened.

Regardless, I enjoyed the story. The book ended with a Happy For Now and I am excited to read the second book and see what adventures await Klara next.

I received an advanced readers copy via Netgalley. These thoughts and opinions are my own.

This Young Adult, fantasy novel follows 17 year old Klara, the daughter of Lucifer himself - made from him, not by him. Klara is being raised by the three Queens of Hell - Abadan, Lilith, and Eve. Under the guise of teaching and training, Klara been has abused most of her life but it has made her strong and formidable. Her father, the King of Hell wants her to rule Hell after him and that is what she is being prepared for. There is just one problem. That is not what Klara wants.

Klara is desperate to escape her home, her captors/trainers, and gain her freedom and independence by escaping to the fae ruled lands where dark beings are not welcome. On her journey, she meets a Lycaon and his little sister who has yet to turn, discovers an old friend along road and finds out that absolutely nothing is as it seems.

By the time you reach the end, you’ll be invested in these characters, in this storyline, in Klara gaining her freedom.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Enchanted Ink Publishing for the eARC of this book. This review, words, and all opinions are my own.

First, I would like to thank NetGalley for my e-copy of this book with the stunning special edition cover! I loved this book from the first page. Filled with fantasy creatures, ghosts, witches, and no other than Lucifer himself, what’s not to love? The main character in this book is one bad ass bitch and I loved following her on her journey to freedom. The romance was subtle but not overtaking of the plot which I also loved. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series!

Kate Callaghan's "Crowned A Traitor" is a dark fantasy that takes readers on a tumultuous journey through the realms of Hell to the mystical lands of Kalos. Published in July 2020 and obtained as an ARC from NetGalley, this novel serves up a complex concoction of power, betrayal, and a quest for freedom that is both enchanting and bewildering.

The Central Saga: Klara & The Throne of Hell

At the heart of this narrative is Klara, heir to the ominous throne of Hell and the Dark Forest of Malum. Her destiny, seemingly etched in the shadows of her lineage, is to ascend as the High Queen of Malum. However, Klara rebels against this. She’s scared that once she does ascend, it will only be a matter of time before someone kills her. It’s also that she doesn’t want to be queen. As a typical young adult, Klara would like to figure out her place in life instead of abiding by other people’s expectations of her. So, her tale is not just about a throne but about the essence of freedom and the weight of expectations.

Klara's relationship with Frendall is one of the book's focal points, showcasing a complicated friendship teetering on the brink of romantic entanglement. Their bond, while deep, lacks the electrifying charge of destined lovers, feeling more like a profound connection marred by circumstances and unspoken truths. The narrative toys with the idea of love's ultimate sacrifice, drawing parallels with Lilith's past decisions, yet it falls short of convincing us of the gravity between Klara and Frendall. Nevertheless, there’s a twist at the end: you must read the book to enjoy this one.

A Web of Intrigue and Deception

Lilith's ominous warning about Frendall and Mila's ambitions throws a shadow of doubt over Frendall's intentions. It's a classic narrative twist, leaving readers to ponder if Klara's allies are as trustworthy as they appear. This uncertainty is a double-edged sword, adding tension while also muddling the clarity of character motivations.

Character Flaws and Moral Quandaries

Klara's journey is fraught with personal and ethical dilemmas. Her struggle with her identity, symbolized by her white wings and her father's rejection, reveals the complexities of family and acceptance. Yet, Klara's character sometimes veers into selfish territory, her longing for freedom overshadowing the consequences of her actions. This trait makes her human and relatable but also frustrating, especially as the narrative progresses toward its climax.

Reflections on Borders and Freedom

The narrative revisits the theme of borders, both literal and metaphorical. The proposition to use borders to determine worthiness and safety echoes contemporary debates, albeit with a fantastical twist. It's a contentious point that seems to resonate less with the themes of personal liberty and more with a contrived solution to deeper societal divides.

Final Verdict

"Crowned A Traitor" is a dark fantasy that explores the burdens of legacy, the quest for self-determination, and the murky waters of trust and betrayal. While the emotional depth between Klara and Frendall might not reach the heights of epic romance, the story compels with its rich world-building and moral complexities. It's a tale for those who relish in the shadows of power, the light of rebellion, and the gray areas of the heart.

This book has everything- Angels, Demons, Fae, cheeky leprechauns and the list goes on, what a superb cast of characters and such an engaging plot. Yes, there's a little violence and gore but it doesn't detract from the story at all, it just enhances it and allows us to see Klara's motivations. Loved the twist at the end, and certainly made me as an invested reader happy. I can't wait to read more from this fabulous author.
