Description

Those who do not learn from financial history are doomed to repeat it.

Most investors rely only on their life experience to make investment decisions. This causes them to overlook cyclical forces that repeatedly shape financial markets. Investing in U.S. Financial History fills this void by providing investors with a comprehensive financial history of the United States of America. It begins with Alexander Hamilton’s financial programs in 1790 and ends with the Federal Reserve’s battle with inflation in 2023.

Guided by Mark Higgins, an experienced investment advisor and financial historian, the book will help you:

- Understand key drivers of financial crises and the principles for managing them.

- Recognize warning signs of speculative manias that lead to asset bubbles.

- Understand why few investors outperform market indices and why index funds work best for nearly all individuals and institutions.

- Identify the challenges that threaten U.S. economic prosperity in the twenty-first century.

Investing in U.S. Financial History reveals that there is virtually no financial event that is unprecedented. By understanding the fundamental drivers of common financial events, you will be able to grasp key investment principles, avoid common pitfalls, and resist the temptation to panic amid market volatility.

Advance Praise

“Higgins should be congratulated for providing an eminently readable, deep but not dense, compendium of U.S. financial history. Written by an investor who understands that our current markets are steeped in history, this book proliferates with rich stories from our past while providing relevant commentary on more current events. If you want to absorb many of the lessons from U.S. financial and economic history in one easy-to-understand volume, this book is for you.” - DAVID J. COWEN, president and CEO, Museum of American Finance

“Because they don’t know financial history, investors and financial institutions make the same mistakes over and over again. Investing in U.S. Financial History explores more than two centuries of financial triumphs and mistakes. Read it if you want to avoid the mistakes and be a part of the triumphs. The book is a sound investment.” - RICHARD SYLLA, professor emeritus of economics, Stern School of Business, New York University

“Higgins’s comprehensive review of U.S. financial history is a grand accomplishment and fills a gap in any serious investor’s library. His sweeping coverage provides much-needed perspective and is an antidote to the daily barrage of short-term noise investors most often face. As an industry, we’ve overemphasized complexity and beating benchmarks versus solving for long-term investor outcomes. There is value in Higgins’s message of getting back to the basics and focusing on the most important aspects of total portfolio risk allocation.” - MICHELLE SEITZ, founder and CEO, Meyden Vest Partners; former chair and CEO, Russell Investments

“‘There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.’ These words of Harry Truman, a great American reader, came to mind as I pored over Mark Higgins’s splendid book, Investing in U.S. Financial History. The breadth and readability of Higgins’s work make reading it a joy. His treatment of the aspect of history that I am most familiar with, institutional investing, focuses on the relatively recent past. He captures the essence of the era, including the high points and the present dilemma of me-tooism, needless complexity and high cost, and provides us with a much-needed wake-up call. Thank you, Mark.” - RICHARD ENNIS, cofounder, EnnisKnupp; former editor, Financial Analysts Journal

"This book is a precious gift to the investment community. Speaking investors’ language, Mark Higgins offers them an underutilized tool: the past.” - AMITY SHLAES, chair, Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation; four-time New York Times best-selling author

“Thorough, engaging, and comprehensive, the book gives the reader a true understanding of the scope and arc of speculation of Wall Street.” - GREGORY ZUCKERMAN, special writer, Wall Street Journal

“Higgins has somehow managed to capture more than 230 years of our nation’s financial and economic history in one page-turning narrative. Investing in U.S. Financial History literally follows the money through the many highs and lows of American history right up to the present day and demonstrates that the more you know about the past, the better equipped you’ll be to handle the future.” - KRISTIN AGUILERA, editor, Financial History magazine

“Knowing and understanding financial history is essential to be a successful investor. This book provides deep insights into the history of almost 250 years of the world’s most important financial market with important conclusions for investors today.” - STEFAN HOFRICHTER, head of Global Economics and Strategy, Allianz Global Investors

“Mark Higgins provides a broad recounting of American history through a financial lens, complete with extensive charts and graphs and an important summary of key lessons learned. History may not perfectly repeat, but investors would be well served to understand that what’s old is often new again.” - STEPHEN FOERSTER, PHD, CFA, co-author, In Pursuit of the Perfect Portfolio; professor of finance, Ivey Business School

“Higgins’s epic work showcases more than two centuries of U.S. financial history, providing helpful context regarding the world’s most important capital markets whose impact reverberates across the world to this day. The book will give you all the context you need to understand where we are in financial markets today. A must-read!” - MUITHERI WAHOME, author, Building Capital: A History of Asset Management in South Africa

“It’s very important for investors to have at least a basic grasp of financial history, and Mark’s book is an excellent introduction to the subject. It provides readers with valuable context and perspective, as well as practical lessons on how to invest. It’s also essential reading for anyone seeking a better understanding of the asset management industry, how it has developed over time, and why it doesn’t serve investors as well as it should. I can highly recommend it.” - ROBIN POWELL, editor, The Evidence-Based Investor

“Higgins should be congratulated for providing an eminently readable, deep but not dense, compendium of U.S. financial history. Written by an investor who understands that our current markets are...
