Description

To undermine something is to weaken its very foundation in order to bring about its eventual collapse.

Underminers is a radical guide to dismantling the industrial machine. The first section of the book deconstructs the Tools of Disconnection - the subtle and seemingly innocuous methods by which we are manipulated into artificial separation from other people and the natural world. These can take many forms, from tangible and intangible rewards for "good" consumer behavior, to indoctrination through advertising, media and compulsory schooling. Once these Tools of Disconnection have been identified, the challenge is to expose their true nature and to provide realistic alternatives to our culture of greed.

Outlining a wide array of unconventional responses, Underminers is a practical, rational and very human response to the ecological and social catastrophes facing us. By turns shocking, entertaining, inspiring and empowering, this manual for a subversive revolution shows how ordinary people can become tomorrow's catalysts for change - reconnected to one another and co-creators of a viable future for humanity.

We are the Underminers, and this is our time.

Advance Praise

How incredibly helpful, that Keith Farnish has given me a new word to describe how I act in the world. Here I thought I was a crank, a doomer, a scold, a Cassandra, a downer, a bummer, a fear monger, just because I want to help rid the world of a culture that is systematically killing off the life of this planet. That’s what that culture tells me, anyway. Turns out I’m an Underminer! Sounds like a noble profession to me. It even comes with an instruction manual now. How about that!
---T.S. Bennett, writer & director of What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire

Every now and again a book claws its way through the cracks in the concrete slabs of greenwash, timidity and shallow thinking, and -- gasping for air -- demands our fullest attention. Farnish's latest book, Underminers, is one of those rare few. Refreshingly honest and free of half measures and pandering, Underminers challenges us to face the perfect storm of social, ecological and personal crises we are facing with a genuinely realistic perspective and a deeper understanding of their causes. Not only that, it guides you along the path to becoming an effective Underminer, and join an emerging movement of people whose time must now have come. It's a must read for anyone who wants to engage with the world they see before them with integrity and honour, and who want to do whatever they can to save the exquisite beauty of the world that still remains.
