Description
Celebrate Juneteenth and radiate #BlackJoy through traditional food and cultural activities.
A commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, the Juneteenth holiday has been observed in the Black community for over 150 years. In The Juneteenth Cookbook, Alliah L. Agostini, author of the popular children’s book The Juneteenth Story—which won the 2022 Black Kid Lit Award for Best Historical title—brings the tradition to your home through historically accurate recipes and educational family activities.
With captivating illustrations of 18 quick and easy recipes, follow along with little Alliah and her grandparents as they explore the historical origins of the holiday through food. Make, share, and enjoy kid-friendly takes on some of the most popular Juneteenth celebration foods, including:
- Red Velvet Ice Cream Sandwiches
- Frances Price’s Calico Potato Salad
- Saucy Pulled Chicken Sliders with Bangin’ Barbeque Sauce
- Freedom Fizz (homemade red pop)
- Hot Links & Chow Chow Relish
- Corn Muffins with Hot Honey Butter
- Mac ’n’ Please
- Sweet Potato Pie Bars
- And more!
All recipes use simple and accessible ingredients, which can be easily substituted for a variety of diets and preferences. Each recipe can also easily be multiplied for larger groups, and the instructions are written with families in mind so everyone from toddler to grandparent can participate in crafting the ultimate Juneteenth celebration spread! Alongside all the delicious recipes, you’ll also learn a brief history of barbeque and it’s importance to the Juneteenth holiday and Black culture in America.
Keep the celebration going with five fun and educational activity sections that include crafting projects (creating an African medallion necklace and designing your own Juneteenth gear with block printing); table and field games (playing mancala and having relay races); on-site or virtual field trips (visiting museums and historic locations or joining Juneteenth celebrations in culturally important American cities); and dancing to the music of the holiday with Alliah’s Cookout DJ 101 tutorial. These activities are perfect for families, community groups, or classes and bring elements of the road to emancipation and Juneteenth’s history to life.
Comprised of 90 percent cooking and 10 percent family and community engagement, The Juneteenth Cookbook brings kids and families a sensory-rich, hands-on exploration of this important and historic American holiday.

This wasn’t just a cookbook this is a black excellence experience. I am blown away by how much culture, and research went into this children’s cookbook.
First of all, the illustrations! The black characters were represented so beautifully. The food was so appealing it made my mouth water and the cookbook instructions were displayed in such an eye catchy manner. Very nice and neat.
Second the culture. Food that i grew up eating with instructions on how to cook for those whom dont know how to. Drinks that i would love to try for parties. The games to play during the party and the music …omg! Took it back to family reunion music playlist. I love how they broke it down from setting up, early comers to clean up and wind down music.
The history! I love how with each food recipe there was a piece of history attached to it as to why this is considered a Juneteenth meal. I learned so much.
This inspired me to have my own Juneteenth party. I will definitely buying my own copy.
This book goes above and beyond the average cookbook. It offers a plethora of Juneteenth ideas--everything from crafts to field trips to games and beyond. If you plan to celebrate Juneteenth, this book offers a solid resource of information.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this books! It was not only fun and beautiful to read, but very educational! I’m excited for kids to be able to enjoy and learn from this book!
Really enjoyed reading this one. Very informative for kids. The interactive activities were a good idea . The recipes are kid friendly, easy to make with some adult supervision & sound delicious. I’m going to make a few especially the sweet potato bars. The cookbook even gives the history of Juneteenth & lists some places to visit to learn more.
I would most definitely recommend this interactive cookbook.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I read this book as a pre-release e-book obtained through NetGalley, provided by the publisher.
This is a children's cookbook. Of course, there are cautions that all activities in the book be done only with adult supervision. In addition to the recipes, there are suggestions for arts, crafts, games, and outdoor activities. What’s more, there is a great deal of historical information about how slaves were brought to the US, when, the history of slavery and emancipation, slavery specifically in Texas, and what Juneteenth celebrates.
The recipes are easy, with clear directions that children of all ages can follow using inexpensive, everyday ingredients available at any supermarket, producing foods that most Americans will recognize. Some of these recipes and styles of cooking are new to me, as an adult who has been cooking all of my life, and I cannot wait to try them. Each recipe has the resulting foods beautifully illustrated.
The games, crafts, and activities have their instructions, directions, or rules concisely described in a way that most children above about 8 could understand and perform them, if they desired – with adult supervision. These are things which could be fun for the whole family, perhaps including others.
The Juneteenth Cookbook by Alliah L. Agostini is a vibrant celebration of Juneteenth, inviting readers to radiate #BlackJoy through traditional food and cultural activities. With captivating illustrations and historically accurate recipes, this book offers a unique blend of history, culinary exploration, and family engagement.
Building on the success of her previous work, The Juneteenth Story, Agostini brings the Juneteenth tradition to life through 18 quick and easy recipes. From Red Velvet Ice Cream Sandwiches to Saucy Pulled Chicken Sliders, the cookbook provides a delightful journey into the culinary delights of Juneteenth celebrations. The recipes are not only delicious but also accessible, with simple ingredients that can be easily adapted to various diets.
Beyond the mouthwatering dishes, the book incorporates educational family activities, ensuring that everyone from toddlers to grandparents can participate in crafting the ultimate Juneteenth celebration spread. The inclusion of crafting projects, table and field games, on-site or virtual field trips, and a DJ 101 tutorial adds a dynamic and immersive dimension to the celebration.
More than just a cookbook, this work is 90 percent cooking and 10 percent family and community engagement. It is a sensory-rich, hands-on exploration of Juneteenth, offering a meaningful way for families, community groups, or classes to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. The Juneteenth Cookbook is a must-have for those looking to embrace the spirit of Juneteenth and create lasting memories through food, history, and joyous activities.
Nothing brings people together like food! I love this book as a starting point for those who want to celebrate Juneteenth but are unsure on how to begin or what to start with. The Introduction, How To Use, and Symbolism are all so important and I'm happy it's there for those that need it. The games, field trips, crafts, are an amazing touch for a well-rounded celebration! The recipes are perfect to do together with family and some are simple enough for children to do on their own.
Favorites that we'll try are Jubilee Tea, Heavenly Deviled Eggs, Pulled Chicken Sliders, and Watermelon Snow Cups!
I HIGHLY recommend this book for any Juneteenth Celebration or a foodie!

A lovely and useful little book for a whole family to enjoy. First off, every library should have a copy and should put it on display for Juneteenth. It would also be a wonderful present to give to any family. It's colorful, has a great layout, and is filled with information. It's much more than just a cookbook and fills a niche in the holiday market.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. It's a total winner!
A great cookbook for kids who both want to cook and to learn more about this holiday which deserves more attention and is past due to go mainstream. History and activities are listed in between the recipes, and all the recipes look absolutely delicious.

Truly amazing and educational!
This book was a true joy to experience. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. There's a short, easy to understand overview on the history of Juneteeth in the beginning and extremely easy versions of traditonal recipes making this a must for a family with small children. I went into this expecting only recipes but the author also included a wonderful Juneteenth playlist and a few activities like block printing tshirts, handmade medallions, places to visit and quite a few games. I urge everyone to pick up this book and share it with your children, neices, nephews, cousins, ANYONE!
You had me at Red Lemonade!
I absolutely loved this cookbook. Honestly, it’s more than a cookbook. The fact that they had an entire 2 pages devoted to cookout DJ 101 was enough for me
Educational and engaging! The beautiful illustrations will invite readers in. The recipes are varied with something for everyone. This will be a perfect addition to classrooms, libraries, and home libraries. For anyone interested in learning more about Juneteenth or looking for new ways to incorporate traditional celebrations.
what an incredible book! I truly think that food is what brings us together a human, and to me this book is proof of it. From my home in France I'm able to learn about a culture that is not my own, I'm able to envision myself cooking this absolutely delicious looking meals and eating them knowing their meanings. This book is gem, from the beautiful illustration, to all the knowledge it offers us through the recipes themselves, I cannot wait to be in the kitchen!
I personally love to cook recipes from all cultures and people. This book is a good cookbook for many reasons. I liked learning the history of Juneteenth and the traditions of the holiday.
