Description
Diamonds and danger dazzle in Ciesielski's latest enchanting romp through post-war Europe as estranged spouses and jewel thieves hunt an elusive Valkyrie tiara.
November 12, 1918. It was a match made in champagne-soaked heaven, but all too soon the bubbles dried up, and Esme Fox awakens the morning after celebrating the end of the Great War to find herself shockingly and accidentally married. She gathers her belongings and slips out before her new husband can stop her. After all, she knows it's best to leave before he does.
Four years later, Jasper Truitt, after having made a name for himself in the underground world of jewel thieves, is on the hunt for a valuable heirloom: a one-of-a-kind winged tiara--the last Valkyrie tiara ever created. So it's with great surprise that he discovers it at a charity event atop the head of a woman he's never forgotten. His long-lost wife . . . who happens to be pursuing the tiara for a vengeful opera diva desperate to obtain the jewel for herself.
The reunion is cut short when Esme vanishes--again--but their separation is temporary. With a hitman on their heels and a deadline looming, the pair find themselves in an epic game of cat and mouse across Europe following leads from the French Riviera to a shop of wonders in Venice, a fairy-tale castle in Bavaria, and a veritable circus thrown by a champagne heiress, all before a dramatic horseback flight through the French countryside.
In the end only one can win, and with both of their hearts on the line, the winner may well turn out to be the loser.
In her latest glamorous historical romance, J'nell Ciesielski spins a sparkling story filled with her signature snappy dialogue and vivid atmosphere that will keep you reading late into the night to see what happens next.

She has done it again!! I picked up a J'nell Ciesielski book last year on a whim, and she has become one of my auto-buy authors very quickly. I've devoured her backlist, and The Winged Tiara is no different. Devourable, lush, romantic, and engrossing, it's the perfect read for anyone seeking depth and complexity in their historical reading fare. HIGHLY recommended!
In THE WINGED TIARA, J’NELL CIESIELSKI has treated us to a delightful historical extravaganza that takes place in 1922 Europe and England as people try to get over the horrors of WW1. Her prose and quick dialogue is outstanding as we journey with two thieves, Esme Fox, whose beginnings were in the music halls of London’s East End, and Jasper Truit, the bastard grandson of the illustrious Duke, in search of the Valkyrie tiara. They aere both broken and suffering from the after effects of the war, and their marriage on Armistice Day in 1918 lasted only one night.
They meet four years later, both chasing after the same prize. But what are they really after?……
The pace is hectic as they evade one another, then chase after one another, until they grudgingly decide they need to work together so as not to get killed……
This is a lovely read and one I highly recommend.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
This book was amazing! J’Nell Ciesielski did such a great job with this book. It was so addictive and I could not put it down. The writing and romance was so addictive.
“Diamonds and women are more beautiful when paired together.”
Jewel thieves competing for the same ‘heist’, the Valkyrie Tiara, keep running into each other and getting in each others way. There is something between them- and both try to deny it. What is it? They just happened to be husband and wife.
They had a hasty post-war marriage -and hadn’t seen each other for years after she disappeared the morning after their wedding.
This story is fun, full of adventure and surprises, and yes- has a unique love story with it.
I was excited to get this ebook from NetGalley for my honest opinion.
This is an amazing book that will delight fans! I also just really love the cover, which I found striking.
Paris, France 11 November 1918: After four years of death and misery, the Great War is over and all of Paris, the world, is celebrating. Focus in on one couple: Jasper, a war weary soldier and Esme, a just as weary nurse. With the flow of champagne and the and the joy of the end of hostilities, Jasper and Esme take it all one step further, they marry. The next morning after the bubbles have disappeared, so too does Esme.
But that is not the end of that relationship. These two charmers meet again only to find they are both chasing the one thing...the Winged Tiara.
So begins the hunt and the chase through 1920s exotic cities as they follow the elusive prize.
I loved this book. From the first page I was hooked and couldn't read fast enough to follow the adventures and dangers of the chase. Beautifully written and described, here is a story for the romantics.
I do hope that we will see more of Jasper and Esme in the future because, having fallen in love with these two delightful characters, one book is definitely not enough! Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this story prior to publication.
A quote near the end of the book, "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" perfectly sums up the early behavior of the protagonists of J'nell Cielsielski's novel "The Winged Tiara". This intriguing and fast-paced story follows long-estranged married couple Esme Fox and Jasper Truitt as they individually traipse through Europe in search of the same tiara. These two flawed people are both products of unfortunate upbringings, and are actual thieves. "Survival had its own code of ethics."
Their cat and mouse game takes them to glittering parties and fabulous homes. The author's imagery is lush and evocative: "the women as gaily dressed as tropical fish in their pinks, silvers, and greens" is just one example of her flair for description. Characters come to life as well. Countess Accardi, her violent henchman, and the clever, egg-shaped Lamb are just a few of them. Even eccentric Lamb's pet chicken has a personality, and the Duke's true character is surprisingly nuanced. Esme and Jasper become the people they're meant to be. Dialogue is intelligent and witty.
Cielsielski's prose is crisp and expressive. This author pens deeply romantic stories without resorting to smut. There is some innuendo, perhaps, but nothing that comes close to being graphic. These characters are already married. "The Winged Tiara" is a wonderful read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for an ARC of this captivating novel.
Romantic, intriguing, and well-paced, this is the first book I've read from the author and I can see why they have a dedicated audience. It combines the high drama of the Gatsby-era 1920s with a somewhat silly yet fun adventure with married main characters.
This was lighthearted fun! Competing jewel thieves galivanting across Europe in pursuit of a famed tiara. To add to the fun, they happen to have a history: a hasty marriage after the post-war celebrations, only to end the next morning when the bride disappeared without a trace. The prose was fun and easy. You could taste the food and drinks and see the glitz of the jazz age. Thoroughly enjoyed!
Thanks to Net-Galley for the ARC.
The Winged Tiara is such an enjoyment to read. It takes place in Europe after the war in the dazzling 1920s when a shift in society started taking place.
We are introduced to Jasper and Esme who, 4 years prior, hastily exchanged vows in a moment of celebration. The next morning, Esme leaves and Jasper wakes up alone. Years later, they are reunited, both jewel thieves after the same prized item, and the race to reach the item first begins.
Their interactions with each other are hilarious and amusing. Always trying to outdo one another results in entertaining schemes and comical reactions.
Esme tries hard to ignore the feelings starting to grow, but can't deny the chemistry between them.
From start to finish, this story will thrill you with a unique plot, sweeping romance and exciting adventure.
Thank you netgalley for a free copy of this book, my thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Winged Tiara by J'nell Ciesielski is a book you will not be able to put down. Esme and Jasper create chemistry that I could not get enough of! Between the cat and mouse games to the moments of unparalleled romance, I was turning pages as quickly as I could absorb the tantalizing tale. Esme and Jasper are both notorious thieves who find themselves after the same prize, the Valkyrie tiara. Each has their own compelling reason, and neither will let anything stop them from succeeding. Their intersections on the chase are charismatic and addictive. I wanted them both to succeed. Moreover, I wanted them to succeed together. The story comes full circle in a serendipitous twist, and I could not have been more thrilled. I was entranced from start to finish. Highly, unabashedly, recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
Drop everything and read this book!! One of my favorite reads this year! Fantastic story of enemies to lovers and priceless jewels. When I tell you I could not put this book down! I absolutely adore this author and this is probably her best book yet! I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone!!
How amazing!! Our dashing hero and daring heroine play cat and mouse games as they hunt for a bejeweled winged tiara. Estranged spouses and jewel thieves, each needs it for different purposes. Just when they think they have it, the chase is on! Full of witty, snappy banter, glamour, danger, and romance, they romp through post-WWI Europe on their search. This was my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last, as I really enjoyed it!
"But want and need were two very different beasts, and only one could be mastered at a time."
Such an interesting historical fiction set in 1922 about two high-end thieves! I definitely enjoyed the backdrop of Europe as it was coming back to life after WWI. The parties held by the nobility were fun to get glimpses of. Esme and Jasper were a fascinating pair - both born into less-than circumstances but making the best of what they know. It was definitely an adventure following them as they chased the infamous winged tiara while they met resistance from foes known and unknown.
Esme and Jasper had an unconventional romance and their banter was truly witty and delightful. Their moves as they tried to outsmart each other at first, then as they combined forces to outsmart others, were impressive and clever. The plot had plenty of surprises that made the story more complex. There wasn't much faith element in the book but it was a fun, adventurous ride through the black market of stolen art and jewelry to find trust and belonging.
I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Thomas Nelson and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
J’nell Ciesielski is one author that I read without even knowing what the books are about. And I am never disappointed. And The Winged Tiara proves that yet again. Dashing and fun and full of life and light, it will keep you guessing and laughing and hoping for a beautiful and happy ending! Better get it soon so you can see for yourself!
Fun and entertaining read about two different thieves who want the same prize. Jasper and Esme married on a whim and haven’t seen each other in years but a chance encounter during a job leaves both of them wanting to rekindle a relationship while they search Europe for a treasure. Great story with action and adventure.
Such a fun book with tons of adventure, mystery and fantastic characters. Jasper and Esme were brilliant as they competed as high-end thieves with snarky and flirty dialogue and interaction, and plenty of history between themselves to work thru.
I enjoyed their waffling between competing and when absolutely necessary, teaming up for a hot second at different times, as well as the quirky situations they got themselves into. I thought the ending was perfect and equally entertaining yet endearing.
Overall it was a lighter story - the characters dealt with their own issues and struggles but the focus was more on the action and adventure as well as the tension between them more than anything. All in all it was an enjoyable and highly entertaining book.
Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are mine.
An amazing and entertaining adventure romance set in the Roaring Twenties that will leave you wanting more adventure, more romance, and more jewel heists!
The story begins with two people whom barely know one another, end up married, they had quite a celebration of the War finally being over. She sneaks out, and leaves Jasper asleep, but Esme and Jasper's path cross again!
These two are professional thieves, and each wanting the same coveted winged tiara, and we are there for the banter and danger that surrounds the lifting of this elaborate piece.
As we search for the tiara, we are privileged to delve deeper into their personal lives.
You wonder, even with the attraction between them if these two can ever end up together? I did love the epilogue that the author gifts us with!
Enjoy!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Thomas Nelson, and was not required to give a positive review.
This book was everything I was looking for - a wonderful romance, excellent plot and dialogue between the characters, and a story that kept me turning the pages late into the night! J'nell Ciesielski is writing that classic kind of story that is not very common nowadays - attention to historical detail, characters you like and root for, and an ending that is satisfactory in every way. I highly, highly recommend this book!
Wow! More than 5 stars for this book! I honestly feel like this could be the next Jason Bourne movie! A marriage doomed from the start, notorious thieves, a winged tiara, and a crazy chicken! The imagery is amazing! I felt like I was traveling along with Jasper and Esme on their quest.
The characters are written brilliantly! Jasper is swoon worthy! Although he is suffering from a shameful family secret and a wife who disappeared on him years ago. He is loyal, romantic, and a gentleman. Esme is a strong and determined woman. She presents as a porcupine, but her heart is tender. Lamb cracked me up! He's full of mischief!
The theme of second chances is apparent in the story. Jasper and Esme get second chances with estranged family. Their marriage also gets a second chance. The epilogue of the book is a fantastic happy ending!
I was provided a complimentary copy of the book from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Winged Tiara by J'nell Ciesielski is a glorious post-WW1 heist that is opulent, dynamic and utterly electrifying
The first impression was the pace of the dialogue and the worldbuilding, perfect for the era, rebuilding after the first great war, art deco, style and a whole new world of excess - which brings us to the day that Esme Fox wakes up, realises she's married and does a bunk to get out quick smart!
Four years later and Esme's husband, Jasper Truitt, is a renowned jewel thief and on the prowl for a bejewelled Valkyrie tiara. However, he locates it in the most unlikely place; on the head of his estranged wife who he has not seen since she disappeared. Esme is after the tiara for an Opera singer and as such, she is not going to let it go
A rollicking great adventure that rampages across Europe. A fantastic read!
Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas Nelson Fiction | Thomas Nelson and the author J'nell Ciesielski for this scintillating ARC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
The Winged Tiara began in a manner that startled, yet intrigued me. The journey of two people who had lived through so much uncertainty and self-doubting to a place of understanding themselves and their unique gifts and abilities was well-developed and thought-provoking. While it took me a bit to arrange the many characters in my head as the story progressed, Ciesielski developed them beautifully and brought the reader to an unexpected, yet satisfying conclusion. Well done!
Such a great story that I couldn't put down!
This author really knows how to make her characters come alive and make you feel like that you're a part of their lives.
An over the top luxury in a post war world. This book is just lavish, sinister, and so fun. It has to be a movie. A historical action movie is a thing, right? Mr& Mrs Smith vibes with an art heist. The Italian Job meets The Crown.
This is an exciting story about two famous thieves, who happen to be estranged spouses, in a race against each other to find an elusive tiara. Jasper and Esme had a whirlwind marriage that was over before it had barely begun. Four years later they are brought together again while searching for a one-of-a-kind winged tiara. At first they work as rivals trying to outsmart each other. Later, they must join forces to outsmart a new player in the game. It is an exciting race through 1920’s Europe that the reader is taken on. The chemistry between Jasper and Esme is strong, but they have some serious obstacles to overcome. I love the complexity of this author’s characters. Their strength and their vulnerability. I definitely recommend this story. This is my honest opinion based on the complimentary review copy sent by NetGalley and the publisher. I was not required to give a favorable review.
Oh my goodness, this was such a fun adventure! As the story begins, we meet Esme after she has just married a near stranger Jasper... and leaves him the next morning. Four years later, their worlds collide again when they both find themselves on the hunt to steal the same treasured tiara. What follows is a great cat and mouse adventure across Europe... all set in a wonderful 1920s setting. There was fantastic banter and sizzling chemistry between the two, and I couldn't help but love the back and forth between them. It was a unique story that kept me guessing right through to the very end and enjoying every minute of it. If you're looking for a fun adventure romance, this is certainly one you'll want to experience for yourself.
While this is from a Christian publisher (Thomas Nelson), it should be noted that it is not marketed as Christian fiction and does not contain any faith elements. There is also some content that readers might not expect from this particular publisher... the story starts with a couple (married) waking up in bed together, so there is definitely some implied intimacy and innuendo as well as some minor language. It's definitely closed-door, but just more than readers might expect from this publisher.
**I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
** “The devil with belonging. We’ll create our own world and rules, and you will make something wonderful of it. After all, you’ve proven yourself quite the champion of lost causes.” **
J’nell Ciesielski delivers an action-packed heist story with “The Winged Tiara.”
After a hasty wedding at the end of World War I, Esme Fox knows she can’t stay with the handsome and debonair Jasper Truitt. But when their paths cross again four years later — both on the quest for the elusive Valkyrie Tiara, a crown that represents women from the Norse mythology of “who choose who lives and dies on the battlefield” — they find their journeys have become very similar. Both, seeking to improve upon their pasts, have turned to heists to validate their identity.
As they both work against, and sometimes with, each other, can they capture the elusive tiara, as well as reclaim their initial feelings toward each other?
Ciesielski creates a story filled with many capers, but also includes moments of levity to lessen the tone. She develops characters that struggle with their identities as they both come from what were not considered socially acceptable beginnings. Readers will be able to relate to the flaws and doubts Esme and Jasper have.
She also includes some good themes, like being vulnerable; fighting to make something of one’s self; being accepted on one’s own merits; and finding a sense of belonging.
Fans of her “Jack and Ivy” series, historical fiction, especially war-era stories, as well as action-packed characters like Clive Cussler’s Isaac Bell and dynamic duos like Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence and The Thin Man’s Nick and Nora will love “The Winged Tiara,” which is due out Aug. 13.
Five stars out of five.
Thomas Nelson provided this complimentary copy through NetGalley for my honest, unbiased review.
Thief vs thief. Estranged spouses. A thrilling adventure full of glamour, wit, danger, and sparks. The suspense of who would win the prize and whether both their hearts would survive! A true page turner!! Spectacular dialogue and the descriptions of the places, buildings, and people made me feel like I was looking at pictures not just reading words. And in true J’Nell style there were a few unexpected twists and turns.
Esme is glamorous, quick thinking, a little underhanded, and afraid of commitment. Jasper is devastatingly handsome, brilliant, charming, and wants a life different from his patriarchs.
“I’ve made many mistakes and I’m bound to make many more, but the greatest mistake I could make would be to let you walk away before telling you I am absolutely mad about you. Desperately, hopelessly, incandescently, maddeningly in love with you “
This ARC was provided through NetGalley by the publisher. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
I have yet to read a J’nell Ciesielski book that I didn’t absolutely love. I went in to this one totally blind and was immediately swept up in the romance/rivalry between Jasper Truitt and Esme Fox. They are positively divine! I mean even their names are *chef’s kiss*.
From the moment the crowd parted and those two locked eyes—across the room, amidst the fanfare and excitement of the armistice—they were absolutely fire. But Esme was too afraid of getting burned. After the “I dos”, her self-preservation kicks in and she leaves Jasper with only the memories of a happily ever never to be. Love at first sight becomes leave at first light.
Every moment those to grace the page together is filled with such terrific tension and banter. The cat and mouse game, the crazy twist of fate that continually lands them in each other’s paths makes their rivalry/love/hate relationship a pure joy to watch play out.
There is so much action, danger, and heart stopping romance. Add in the glitz and glamour of the era with those two fabulously resilient and resourceful people and you have an amazing, fast paced adventure you can’t put down.
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own.
The Winged Tiara is a captivating tale of pursuit and romance, set against a backdrop of rich historical detail and suspenseful pacing. This novel held me spellbound from start to finish.
Ciesieski’s latest is a true gem. Intelligent writing, cinematic imagery, and electric moments give readers a front row seat to Esme and Jasper’s push and pull toward one another. This novel doesn’t need explicit scenes to create heat. There’s sexual tension in spades that catapults this romantic adventure to another level. Mr. and Mrs. Smith meets the Roaring Twenties in this lovers to enemies to lovers tale that’ll enchant readers with perfect banter and sizzling chemistry.
PITCH: The Thin Man meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith
I loved this story. The banter is top notch. The leads (Jasper and Esme) are well defined and come across as equals. It’s a heist book set in the 1920s and it moves quickly! As a standalone, the book is delightfully refreshing. I have not had much attention span for books lately, and I devoured this one within 48 hours.

⠀
The Winged Tiara by J'nell Ciesielski is one of my favorite books of the year! I look forward to reading J'nell's books for their immersive historical settings and exciting yet hopeful drama. ⠀
⠀
The Winged Tiara delivers on all accounts with the breathless caper of Esme and Jasper. Their relationship is the definition of second chance romance, as a champagne filled wedding and day after regret, results in them being separated for four years before being thrown together in the search of a lifetime for the renowned Valkyrie Tiara. ⠀
⠀
I just about swooned over their escapades as jewel thieves and I loved each time their paths crossed. Esme is clever and passionate despite her cynical upbringing and Jasper always seems one step ahead, with a heart of gold that belies his difficult childhood. Their banter and playfulness with one another was so delightful to read. ⠀
⠀
This story is fast paced and exciting, drawing me in with a glimmering description of the 1920s culture, from railroad travel to swanky parties. The prized tiara fit perfectly with the lush extravagance of the post war era and I couldn't wait to see who ultimately won such an elegant treasure. ⠀
⠀
If you are a fan of historical fiction, romance and revenge, or glamorous capers, The Winged Tiara is a five star book I would love you to read!
The Winged Tiara is a well written historical book. I throughly enjoyed the plot and the well developed characters. I definitely will be reading more of this author’s books.
Conspirator. Thief. Charmer. Thrill-seeker. But never liar.
Quite a pair. They met in a whirlwind at the end of the War and married, only later finding out all they had in common. Both were rejected by others in their youth and ever since have been trying to prove themselves, both as thieves. Good ones. They're on the hunt for the same stolen jewels, pushing and pulling each other all the way. They're both smart and competitive, taking them into the most luxurious settings, where they each shine. Lots to sigh about. Fast paced race to a glorious end.
I received this book free from the author, publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I loved this story! Witty banter. Rival jewel thieves. Yearning. Villains. Elaborate parties to forget hard times. A collision course for Esme and Jasper. Love those two! I want more of their stories!
J’Nell Ciesielski begins her latest novel The Winged Tiara on the day after Armistice Day in 1918. Femme fatale Esme Fox wakes from a delicious dream about a handsome man. She can linger no longer in the fantasy: a hangover has other plans. Esme holds her throbbing head in her hands and sees a ring on a certain finger. What happened yesterday?
Esme pieces together what happened after meeting a returning soldier. In Paris, people spilled out into the streets and celebrated the signing of the agreement to end four long years of the Great War, World War I. She and Jasper Truitt went from strangers to husband and wife in a whirlwind courtship. Both were zozzled when they married. But Esme refuses to be tied down. Sick as she is, she pulls herself together and hightails it out of the hotel room. She leaves the ring, takes the cannoli. Just kidding. She takes a photo taken of the happy couple as she leaves. Jasper wakes wifeless and finds only a gold band. He will carry that band and look for his wife in the faces of strangers for four years.
The reader learns how suited they are for one another. They just don’t know that yet.
Background on the Characters
Esme and Jasper are highly skilled thieves. They love a good heist, pinching everything from an apple to food tins, art and artifacts, rare and royal jewelry, and dancing girls in their skivvies. (Jasper nicked that last one for soldiers in the trenches.) Each has a past that aids them in their life of crime.
Esme grew up with her mother Maud, known as Mimsy, who performed on East End stages and now owns the Scarlet Crown theater. Esme knows a thing or two about donning disguises and quick costume changes. She can pull off any character needed for success in a heist and in life. She can glide like a duchess through a ballroom, or blend seamlessly in the background as a servant. Jasper grew up the bastard son of a bastard son of the 7th duke of Loxhill. His grandfather the Duke gave Jasper a formal education and even took him on a coming-of-age tour of the continent. He just won’t give Jasper the Roxburgh name. Jasper is infamously known as the “Phantom,” and his “gifts” were put to good use during the war. But that moniker also led to his arrest.
Like Sherlock Holmes and Leroy Jethro Gibbs (NCIS lore), Jasper and Esme have rules they follow. Unlike the former Victorian-era detective and the Navy cop, they choose to use their skills for nefarious reasons. Jasper’s rules are:
1. Keep it entertaining. 2. Don’t make enemies. 3. Don’t allow the game to be personal. 4. Appear confident in all situations. 5. Know the staff of an establishment by name. 6. The truth is not an accusation. 7. Never blame circumstances; blame your own abilities.
Esme’s list is shorter: 1. Have no entanglements. 2. Depend only on herself. 3. Never let a handsome face trick her into taking her eyes off the prize. And most importantly - 4. Don't become her mother.
The Plot
Despite the fear of going back to jail, Jasper is on the hunt for the last Valkyrie tiara ever made by Pierre Cartier. The tiara’s coiled-wire springs on the wings appear to move with the wearer. Framed in gold and silver, the ethereal Viking-inspired headpiece has 2,500 cushion-shaped diamonds and can be disassembled and worn as brooches. Jasper’s friend and former comrade Desmond Walsh tells him about a rumor that an aristocrat had the tiara made for his mistress, an Italian opera singer. When he married, he took it back for his bride.
Villa et Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild, located in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the Cote d'Azur (photo credit)
Jasper and Mond attend a party thrown at Madame Rothschild’s Villa Ephrussi in the French Riviera (see the real villa to the right.) The men gaze on enchanting costumed ladies who fairly float toward them, wearing exquisite jewelry: Empress Josephine’s sapphire-and-diamond parure; Catherine the Second’s crown and scepter; the Bagration Tiara; and the pièce de resistance – the Valkyrie tiara.
Seeing his prize, Jasper calculates how he will seduce the woman wearing the tiara. She wears huge white wings and has her dark hair in a ‘20s bob. She smiles as she makes her way toward him. Recognition dawns – Esme. How’s that for a reunion?
Upon inspection of the tiara, Jasper tells Esme it is a fake. Her employer Countess Rossalini Accardi has a jeweler confirm this – and she is homicidally livid. She has dastardly deeds in mind for this tiara. The countess demands Esme find the tiara, and she sends Gio Pirazzo, her henchman, as incentive to succeed. Scary dude lurks in the background and threatens to strangle Esme…on repeat. I think he’d rather strangle her than allow Esme to continue the search.
Jasper thinks Esme is his only rival for this famed tiara, but he learns from a collector in Venice that a no-necked, egg-headed prankster named Lamb is after it as well. Felipe Auguste Constantine Lambert Boisseau is this wealthy Prussian who wants to add the Valkyrie tiara to his collection mostly to thwart the best of the best thieves: “the Phantom and the Fox.” Instead of a guard dog, Lamb hilariously owns a guard Silkie named Lettie who is straight out of Despicable Me 2. (Made me think of El Macho and his guard chicken, Pollito.)
The hunt for the Valkyrie tiara begins for the lovers-turned-enemies. They follow the clues across Europe while pursued by Pirazzo and the impish prankster Prussian in pursuit. The duo double-crosses each other, flees from and finds each other again. They will pair up later, but not before an exciting, fast-paced cat-and-mouse game.
My Review
I enjoyed spending time in the Roaring Twenties with Jasper and Esme. I’m used to leading ladies and gents with virtues more than vices, but I rooted for these crooks just the same. In her fight to survive a hard life, Esme brooks no weaknesses. She smiles in the worst of circumstances. She works hard to stay in control. And she sounds like a dapper darling no matter what happens with her sleek black bob and high-end wardrobe. She is a 1920s fashion plate, like Louise Brooks.
True-to-life locations and historical figures add realism to Ciesielski’s clean, historical romance. The Valkyrie Tiara exists. German Composer Richard Wagner’s third act in his opera Der Ring des Nibelungen is “The Ride of the Valkyries.” His opera elicited a desire for all things Viking in the fashion world. A goddaughter of Queen Mary, the late Mary Crewe-Milnes, a real Duchess of Roxburghe, commissioned the Valkyrie tiara in 1935, based on those famed Valkyries of Norse mythology. Valkyries were powerful women who served Odin and were "the choosers of the slain." They decided whether a warrior who died was worthy of Valhalla where Viking warriors go in the afterlife. (If you’ve seen Thor: Ragnarök, then you know a bit about the Valkyries.) When I searched for the Valkyrie myself, I found a Canton, Ohio, connection. The 25th U.S. President William McKinley's wife Ida Saxton McKinley had a similar tiara.
Ciesielski is an excellent wordsmith and storyteller. She slowed down scenes to build tension. She appealed to all the senses. I could slink alongside Esme and Jasper at these grand European locations. I found only one example of what’s called on-the-nose writing about Mimsy lighting a cigarette and smoking. Most adults know about cigarette holders, how to light a cigarette, and how to smoke one. Esme and Mimsy then talk about smoking and making rings or something. I would cut that, but that’s just me. I wish I could quote from this work though. I would include quotes here of sentences that I thought sang off the page. Beautiful writing overall.
My fly-on-the-wall status enabled me to listen in on Esme and Jasper (alone or together) planning how they would steal this tiara. Their growing interest and true affection led to passion, which made for a thrilling treat of a tale. Their scents showed up before they did in their pursuit of the tiara, so I knew they had to be nearby. I thought maybe the two forgot their mission of retrieving the tiara and decided to chase each other. But hurt people, hurt people.
Themes in The Winged Tiara to Explore
Themes to consider when you read this novel begin with masks and mirrors. Jasper and Esme know about the existence of their personal masks and each other’s masks. They also see themselves reflected in the other, a mirror to themselves, their heart’s desires and needs. They refuse to acknowledge those needs, their brokenness, and the walls they’ve erected. The masks skip and all they need do is scale those walls, but will they?
Feather sighting are everywhere in this tale. I counted 40 feather references. Esme wears wings that have white feathers on the catwalk as she wears the winged tiara with its faux feathers. Wings with feathers show up on another aristocrat’s wife wearing the winged tiara. Feathers are in bandeau-style headpieces, in lapels, on a ringmaster’s whip. Peacock feathers, feathered turbans, guard-chicken Lettie’s silky feathers show up. A feather boa interferes with Jasper’s interrogation of Esme in a costume closet at one point. Thrown in for good measure are feathery expressions.
Someone could write an excellent literary critique on either of those themes. I would consider the feathers in the novel. (Hint: Use the Kindle search feature and you’ll find the feathers faster.) Feathers after all pertain to birds, flight, and freedom. But just how free are our lovebirds? That’s the question.
I want to thank Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for allowing me to read and review this novel that reminded me of stars of Turner Classic Movies. I received a complimentary advance reader copy of “The Winged Tiara,” set to release on Aug. 13.
Esme Fox and Jasper Truitt have a whirlwind romance and wedding at the end of the Great War. But the next morning reality hits Esme and she gathers her belongings and leaves before her new husband can stop her. Four years later Jasper has made a name for himself as a jewel thief in the underground world. In his pursuit of a one-of-a-kind winged tiara called the Valkyrie, he comes face-to-face with his estranged wife, who also happens to be in search of the tiara. She vanishes into the night, but this isn’t the last time they see each other. A cat and mouse game unfolds across Europe. One that brings them together over and over again. But only one can succeed in capturing the Valkyrie. And with a hitman on their tail and feelings starting to grow it’s becoming harder and harder to imagine that one of them will have to lose.
This was such a fun book! Esme and Jasper’s epic cat and mouse game was so enjoyable. They have great banter and surprise each other in such fun and unexpected ways. And the game just reminds them of why they got married so quickly in the first place and that maybe they should give it another try. But lessons learned in childhood and hurts from those they thought were family prevent both of them from taking that leap. They needed to sort that out first and I love how all that panned out with their families.
This book packs in a sweet slow burn romance, trickery, thievery, and a few eccentric characters to keep you entertained. But also, some trigger-happy characters that keep you on your toes and make you nervous waiting for when they will show up next. So much enjoyable storyline and fun places explored. I really enjoyed this. It's enough romance for the romance reader but also so much more with the jewel thieving and difficult/unusual family situations. So good!
If you’re looking for a historical book that takes you across Europe in a cat and mouse chase full of bantery goodness and romance, then this book might be for you.
Thank you Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the opportunity to read this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Crisp, witty dialogue, fast paced action, a delectable rivals to more romance, and a glamorous roaring 20’s setting made the Winged Tiara an absolute favorite! From the very first I was drawn into this engaging story with estranged husband and wife jewel thieves. I loved these endearingly flawed characters who kept me on my toes as they race to find and steal the valuable Valkyrie tiara. It’s a well written, captivating novel that I can’t wait to read again.
After celebrating Armistice Day, Esme Fox was startled to wake up married. Before her new husband could open his eyes, she hurriedly left taking only their wedding photo with her. Now four years later they meet again at a wealthy heiress’ party. Both accomplished thieves, they each try to outwit the other to gain possession of the famed Valkyrie tiara. But while the chemistry sizzles between them, Esme staunchly adheres to her mother’s advice to never risk an emotional attachment.
Jasper Truitt was born on the wrong side of the blanket and has been trying to prove his worth to his grandfather ever since. Though he still dreams of the woman who captured his heart four years ago, he’s learned to stifle his feelings until he sees her again. As the Phantom, he’s developed an infamous reputation as a jewel thief & this time, the prize is personal. He’ll go to any lengths to get it even if it means working with his estranged wife. Unfortunately, there are others who are after it as well & it’ll take both of their skills to get it.
I loved this book! From the 20’s lingo to the exciting race to get the tiara to the sizzling attraction and exquisite fashion, this book was impossible to put down. I loved the complicated relationship between Esme & Jasper. Both grew up in difficult circumstances which leads to a commiserating understanding between them. Unfortunately, being vulnerable is not Esme’s strong suit and so the battle for the tiara as well as Esme’s heart is fierce. But, I was here for all of it & enjoyed every minute. I also enjoyed the side characters, even the infuriating Lamb. I’m hoping the author considers turning this into a series. I’d love to read more about Esme’s and Jasper’s adventures.
Highest of recommendation to historical romance fans! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
Thank you to @jnellciesielski @thomasnelson @austenprose for my gifted copy of The Winged Tiara by J'nell Ciesielski which published on 8/13/24.
What a fun adventure! Historical fiction readers will be swept across Europe as enemy (and estranged spouses) jewelry thieves race to secure the missing Valkyrie tiara. Esme and Jasper shared one blissful, champagne-filled night together when WWI ended that led to a shotgun wedding and a morning after estrangement. Several years later, the two jewelry thieves find themselves in direct competition for the same prized tiara in a race against time.
Their reconnection is tension-filled and leads to a cat-and-mouse game from England, France, Venice to Neuschwanstein Castle (by train, boat, car and horse!) . Full of 1920's glamour, fashion, and parties, this heist book was immersive and captivating. I loved Esme's strong-willed spirit and swooned over the way Jasper could seemingly disarm and charm her with his charm and wit. As the risk and danger increased as the search for the tiara continued, the two competitors find themselves increasingly working together as partners to avoid catastrophe. Fantastic chemistry, witty banter, action-packed plot twists, and descriptive prose make this book a stand-out fun and swoony romp. This was my first Ciesielski book, and it will not be my last!
Jasper and Esme married - and quickly divorced - during the Great War. Later they are surprisingly brought together again in the 1920's as they search for the mysterious, lost Valkyrie Tiara.
I wanted to read The Winged Tiara because I have enjoyed previous books by J'nell Ciesielski. The exes working together storyline sounded like fun, and I love 1920's settings.
This was a rollicking good read! I loved the 1920's setting, the European adventure, and the main characters. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction. Five stars!
This one took me WAY back and I loved every single second of reading this book. From the witty banter between Jasper and Esme, to their competitive thievery activities to their growing attraction to one another. It had all the best elements of my favorite power couple from the 1930’s (William Powell & Myrna Loy).
Esme Fox and Jasper Truitt have this opening chapter filled with a whirlwind romance where the war has just ended and they hurriedly marry one another. But the morning after, Esme realizes she just can’t stay and be tied down, and so she leaves. Fast forward four years and they run into one another again as they’re both pulling a con trying to steal The Valkyrie (a tiara that a lot of wealthy people are vying for).
This is where everything gets even more complicated, but stays heavily interesting. They realize they’re both thieves and are in competition with one another. Each of them trying to find The Valkyrie for deeply personal reasons with their employers. So while they’re still married and competing against one another to get to The Valkyrie first, there are numerous moments of sensitivity between them as they are deliberating whether they should keep their marriage or get the divorce after their missions are completed.
What I loved most was their easy banter and witty interactions. Both Esme and Jasper have that classical character with etiquette and charm, but the sarcasm-laced comments that easily float about them makes it comical in a way that this time period was so well known for. Their romance was perfection and I really enjoyed how they were married first and then start to get to know one another throughout the rest of the book. Even if they both think they want a divorce, they soon realize just how perfect they are for one another.
I loved this book! With its sharp dialogue, nonstop action, fabulous romance, and glamorous 20's setting, it was pure perfection!
Exquisitely written, great character development, beautifully romantic, exciting, and just so much fun, The Winged Tiara grabbed me from page one and didn’t let go until the very end.
The story begins with Esme Fox and Jasper Truitt having a whirlwind romance and marriage just as WWI has ended. The morning after, Esme leaves while Jasper is still sleeping, certain it’s better to leave before he leaves her.
Four years later, they run into one another again, both on the hunt for a one of a kind diamond tiara. They’re both pulling a con as they try to steal the tiara, but with a hitman on their tail, and others who want the tiara for themselves, they find themselves in a game of cat and mouse across Europe.
While competing with each other, they share a connection like the one they felt when they first met. They have some heartwarming moments of vulnerability and honesty, and lots of heated chemistry between them. But Esme struggles to let go of her mother’s advice to always stay single, and Jasper is still stinging from her rejection. Will they stay together and make the marriage work, or go their separate ways once the caper is over.
Lovably flawed characters, sparkling wit and charm, sizzling chemistry, captivating plot, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith vibes, make this a solid 5 star read for me.
I received a copy from the publisher, NetGalley, and Austenprose, but a positive review wasn’t required.
You know that feeling when you discover a new author and you think to yourself, “why did it take me so long to read their books?” That is how I felt only a few chapters into reading The Winged Tiara by J'Nell Ciesielski, it was so good! I was hooked immediately and officially want to read everything in Ciesielski's backlist.
The Winged Tiara was such a unique read for me. I loved the historical setting, the vibes, and the romance. It was fun cheering for Jasper and Esme who were semi-gray characters as they both were thieves trying to obtain a special winged tiara. I loved the motivations for both and oh man, their love story was really special. I was hooked and Jasper was just so patient and determined, I was happy to see Esme open her eyes a bit more to what they could be and the ending was very satisfying for me.
The dual POV was fantastic. I really enjoyed getting inside each characters' head. This is a clean, historical romance. I highly recommend it.
Thanks Austenprose and Netgalley for the complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What book are you most likely to gift to a friend? I like to give books to friends or family that I think they will like. Sometimes I read a book, enjoy it and immediately think of who else I know that will also enjoy the book. The Winged Tiara was a book I instantly knew a few friends and family members would enjoy.
Jasper and Esme were caught up in celebrations after the end of WWI and had a quick alcohol filled marriage. Esme slipped away the next morning. Years later, the two meet up again as both are famous jewel thieves on the hunt for the elusive winged Valkyrie Tiara. Will they find the tiara, and will they find their way back to each other?
My thoughts on this book:
• I loved the witty banter and romantic tension between the two main characters. Sparks definitely fly in this novel.
• This book reminded me of many of my favorite movies that had romantic tension, witty dialogue, a love/hate relationship, and one upmanship among the leads including To Catch a Thief, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Thin Man, or The Thomas Crown Affair.
• I loved the constant adventure with their pursuit of the winged tiara.
• The audiobook had a great narrator with unique voices for all the characters. It was so fun to listen to this audiobook!
• The narrative was fast paced.
• I loved the roaring 20’s setting among the elite and glamorous in Europe.
• This was a clean read.
• Two of my favorite tropes were in this novel including enemies to lovers and second chance romance.
• Esme and Jasper were both great characters. They were both interesting with flaws, fears, and ambitions.
• There is a nice set of discussion questions at the end of the novel which would be great for a book club.
Overall, The Winged Tiara is one of the best books I’ve read this year. I highly recommend this historical romance. I would love to see this as a movie.
Can banter be delicious? Because the banter in this book absolutely is. Glamour just oozes from each paragraph, and I was hooked from the first line. The 1920s have always entranced me, and this book is the 20s personified.
I'm really not trying to talk in clichés, but this book-I just can't say enough about it, and my fingers are having trouble keeping up with my brain!
In the author's note, she says that this book is an easy breezy read, and maybe it is, but it certainly isn't boring! I did not want to put this one down!
Shoot, I have to keep going back and fixing typos because my brain is just whirring with excitement, so I'm gonna stop. But I LOVED this book with its excitement, mystery, suspense, and glamour. Not to mention that banter!
If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I definitely would.
Caveat:
There is cussing in this book, which I didn't expect, since I thought this author was a Christian. There's also a lot of talk about seduction, but nothing even came close to cracking that bedroom door open, and there's a LOT of drinking. And honestly, all of it fit with the plot and the time period. It didn't detract from the story for me, but it did take me by surprise.

The Winged Tiara
A Historical
J'nell Ciesielski, author
A darling fun story full of angst between the two main characters.....
I enjoyed this quick read. It was fast paced with a continuous action-packed plot. Occurring during the Great War, otherwise known, as World War I, Jasper and Esme play a game of chase in pursuit of the last Valkyrie tiara.
Once married, they now seek a fast divorce, as they both feel it was a rash decision on their parts and want to seek out their fortunes on their own without the accompaniment of the other. With shots being fired, arrests taking place, and that blasted diamond tiara in the hands of others, will they accomplish the task of actually obtaining the jewel? And what will happen to their personal relationship? Can it be amended or is it doomed? I highly recommend this enchanting tale to be read. You're sure to laugh at the characters antics and set on the edge of your seat while turning the next page to see what is about to happen next.
I read the book and listened to the audio while doing so. It was a lovely afternoon and into the night read. I was afforded an advanced reader copy of both the book and the audio book from Netgalley, the publisher and the author. I leave this review of my own volition. I do so happily. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. I have read this author for years and enjoy each book she writes. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy. I promise you'll enjoy the ride.
I love novels set in France during the 1900’s. I will add this to my list of historical fiction that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Mystery, love, danger, and a chase over Europe for a tiara that’s holds different meanings for all involved. Very descriptive writing and a twisting plot made this an enjoyable and fun read. I would definitely recommend!

An epic cat and mouse hunt through Europe. Twists and turns pile up to keep the reader guessing what path the story will take to get to the ending everyone hopes for. Romance rises off the page like champagne bubbles that start the whole story off. J"nell Ciesielski has an amazing gift to bring words from the pages of a book and create a movie for the readers to immerse in. This book is no different, with swift fingers, impressive plans, and romance constantly distracting both Esme and Jasper. These characters feel so real, I often felt like I was being pulled along behind them as they nipped, ran, and hunted for the prize they are both fighting over. Who will win the greatest prize? And will it be what they think it will?
This story takes the reader on a trip through a number of European destinations that J"nell Ciesielski brings to life with stunning detail. It is amazing how different locations can fell like they spring to life before your eyes even though you never leave the house. What a wonderful talent!
The sizzling romance that sweeps the reader in and the wonderful twists that comes with 2 thieves trying to outdo each other and win the ultimate prize. But what if losing means the chance to win?
I can't recommend this book enough. It is a marvelous trip through all the sparkle and danger of the 1920s. Plan for a long weekend of no interruptions when you get it, you will not want to put this book down until you find out what surprises are around the last bend. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
My review begins with the beautiful cover. When I saw it, I instantly wanted to read the synopsis.
A great historical book that tells the story of Esme Fox and Jasper Truitt. They met in 1918 at a celebration of the end of WWI. Esme woke up the following morning and found that they had gotten married. She snuck out of the room before Jasper woke up. They crossed paths again 4 years later. They were professional thieves searching across Europe for a winged tiara know as the Valkyrie tiara. There were amusing situations as they each tried to be the one to locate the tiara ~ then working together with a hitman on their tail. Will Jasper be able to forgive Esme for leaving him and trust her enough to take another chance at love?
This is the first book I've read by this author. I will be looking to see what else she has written.
I appreciate receiving an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Winged Tiara is a wonderful historical mystery. Two jewel thieves with a past trying to obtain the same Tiara, what could go wrong? The story will grab you from the beginning and keep you entertained till the very end. I highly recommend this book.
**The Winged Tiara** is a notable work that combines elements of romance, adventure, and historical fiction. Author J’nell Ciesielski excels in crafting a vivid, immersive world and demonstrates strong character development throughout the novel. Although the fast-paced narrative may not appeal to all readers, those who appreciate an exciting, romantic adventure will find much to enjoy in this book.
I highly recommend **The Winged Tiara** to enthusiasts of historical romance and adventure genres. The novel's engaging characters, detailed settings, and compelling storyline contribute to its memorability. Whether you are a long-time admirer of J’nell Ciesielski or encountering her work for the first time, this book is likely to leave a lasting impression.
Wowwwwww this book!!!!😍
I was hooked from the prologue and the rest of the book did not disappoint. Wowww.
The lovers to enemies, to friends, to sorta lovers, to enemies again, to lovers was just 🤌🤌🤌 The tensionnnnnnn. 🤩 I loved both of the main characters and following their adventures. The danger, suspense, romance, setting, all of it. I loved how both characters were competing and both jewel thieves. It was such a fun read!!

What an adventurous, historical and romantic thrill! You got to love a book that's not only friends to enemies but estranged married couple to more! Esme and Jasper are wonderful characters! After the Great War ends our beloved Esme celebrates with Jasper, two souls who meet, and share a passionate night! However! Esme leaves the next morning unsure of what to do next! ......... Except now they're married! 💞
He doesn't see her for 4 years! And they are both sent to look for the famous Valkyrie Tiara! A game of cat and mouse ensues between the estranged spouses as they both each tried to deliver the tiara to their employers! (No spoilers!! Lol) This definitely had an ocean's 11 and Mr and Mrs smith feel to it! 💗
The story very much had the spark and allure I needed to be reading for hours! Every time I thought something was going to happen in the chapter I would be thrown off in the next chapter! It felt as if I was in a beautiful 1920s carnival! There's glitz there's glamor and the lights are always shining on Esme and Jasper! 🌠
Of course my heart belongs to the 1920s! The author does a beautiful job delivering a vivid description worthy of a movie premiere! 🍿
I love this book from beginning to end! It takes a real talented author to produce a book that has writing soaring like diamonds in the air! That's how I felt when I read this treasure! 🎙️
Bravo! 🧁
This book was just so much fun! Historical romance, action and adventure with two very likable and intelligent characters, both thieves with ethics. Jaspar Truitt and Esme Fox met right at the end of WWI, drink a bit too much champagne celebrating and marry on a whim. The next morning Esme if gone and Jaspar spends the next four years searching for her. When the two do finally meet up again they are both after the famous Valkyrie Winged Tiara as they are both talented jewel thieves. The search and chase for the tiara takes them on wild and exotic adventures all over Europe and England. The author provides lots of wonderful descriptions of famous landmarks which I really enjoyed. This book is a must read for lovers of historical fiction and romance. Very highly recommended! 5 solid stars.
