Who doesn’t love to be on a sweet journey with an adorable puppy?! Pretzels and Adventure is a sweet story for children about the special bond between a child and his dog. When the story became worrisome and sad, humor was added that brought giggles out of my litttles. Just like most sweet stories, the book ended happily- something important to my dog loving children. I am excited to add this book to my childrens’ library once it is released.
Follow your nose! But, what if it leads you astray? That's the situation adorable dog Beau finds himself in when he lets the tantalizing aroma of pretzels lead him astray during a game of hide-and-seek with his young owner.
Inspired by the adventures of the author's own dog, Buddy, this is a cute story of a dog with absolutely adorable eyes. Beau and his boy Jasper are great friends and share a love of pretzels (and apparently baseball and red trucks). They stop at the park one day to play hide-and-seek. I couldn't help but smile at the cute illustration of Beau covering his eye while Jacob goes to hide. All goes well until, uh, oh, it starts to rain. That dulls the sense of smell, I assume, and next thing you know Beau is lost. He's still following his nose but it's leading him astray. I mean, he winds up on a train and bus, befriends a sweet little girl who gives him pretzels, and wanders the streets looking sadder and sadder. There's always a bit of humor to dilute any tension, however, and it isn't long before, amazingly, Beau finds his way home. It's how he gets that that makes the story special, that and the people and sights he sees.
All in all, a sweet, fun story that kids will enjoy. The illustrations are colorful and fun. And, oh, Beau's eyes. They express his joy, fears, and love of pretzels, that's for sure. I did note he's wearing a collar and tag, which did make me question why no one looked for a phone number on it but, hey, that's something most kids wouldn't think about. Nor would they wonder what Beau's humans were doing to find him, which might be a fun question to ask at the end, "What do you think Jasper and his family were doing to help find Beau? What would you do?" In other words, it can be used as a learning experience and other stories offer other ideas. I enjoyed Beau's misadventures, falling into those gorgeous eyes, and imagine children will do the same. Thanks #NetGalley and #IndigoRiverPublishing for giving me this sneak peek. Now, I'm having a sudden yen for pretzels, however.
Cover and Illustrations are really cute, simple yet engaging. Illustrator did a fantastic job showing the dogs emotions throughout the illustrations. Word choice was great for developing readers to be able to jump in with words they may know.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this book in exchange for my review! All opinions are my own.
As someone who loves dogs (and all animals), and has a golden retriever named Pretzel I knew I had to read this book. I thought this was a very adorable children's book and I liked the illustrations. I would consider purchasing this book for a child in my life.

This is a cute and surprisingly highly suspenseful little story about a little dog playing hide and seek who ends up having to seek very hard when his nose leads him to unexpected locations. This poor little lost dog rides a train and a bus and meets several people before happily making his way back home. I just wish his family could have known where he'd been!
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
Adorable and cute story about a puppy (Beau) who experiences several adventures as he finds his way back to his family after being lost. Illustrations are cute and well done too! I enjoyed this book and would recommend to any dog loving family with little children!
Thank you Netgalley and Indigo River Publishing for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This has some of the cutest illustrations! my daughter love the little puppy and the story! it was such a sweet quick night time story
Thank you so much to Indigo River Publishing and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
Beau and Jasper have moved to a new farm, but after a game of hide and seek goes wrong Beau is lost on his own and goes on an adventure to try and find his family.
This was so cute who doesn’t love a precious story of a cute puppy having an adventure to find it family. It’s was so sad, but really sweet. Beau knew the smell of his favourite treat and associated it with his best friend Jasper and uses that for his guide to get him home.
Though it was super sweet, dogs don’t see color so using the red truck as something he used to get home didn’t work as he literally realistically couldn’t see its color. Though as it’s a kids book I won’t let it take enjoyment out of it, picture books tend to have an element of fantasy to them.
This was a really sweet adventure for little Beau though, he just wanted to get home and found he had a fun trip, meeting new people, seeing new sights and then found his way to his new home.
I like Beau love pretzels!
The art in this book is so well done and unique. An easy read but not too easy; I would say k-2 for grade-level reading. My 6 year-olds found it engaging enough to beg me to read it again!
Such a precious story with cute illustrations that so wonderfully reflect the emotions of the dog and his human. A quick but engaging read as the wandering dog romps through several adventures.
Thanks to NetGalley and Indigo River Publishing for the opportunity to read this sweet ARC.
This book was greatly loved by my 5 and 6 year old! The illustrations were captivating, and the story was a lot of fun! We will read this many more times!
The illustrations were absolutely everything in this book!! However, I do think there was too much text on each page so it took away from it. With children's books, there's the beauty of storytelling through pictures, and I think this story could have used a little more subtlety. But I did love seeing this little dog using his sniffer to find his way back home. I think my biggest critique has to be the beginning - I couldn't figure out who was Jasper and who was Beau. It would have made more sense for the dog to be named pretzels, I think. Considering this reads like a K-2 book, those specific details and background building might get lost during a read aloud.
Overall it was adorable. I would definitely recommend, and can see myself buying this for my classroom library.
This charming story follows the unpredictable journey of Beau the dog as he tries to find his way back to his best friend in the whole wide world Jasper. He hopes by following the smell of pretzels he’ll find his way home.
The illustrations are so fun and engaging and really make you connect and root for Beau. Who doesn’t love a fun story that also highlights the loyalty of dogs.
This was a cute story with colorful pictures. I feel like it could have been a little longer though. It only showed what the puppy did when it was lost. What did the boy do to find his dog?
I thought this book was sweet and adventurous. It's about a puppy and his undeniable bond with his young owner. From an adult's perspective, I would have liked to know that the puppy was being searched for by his owners. I don't think children would be worried about that though. The illustrations were created with lots of detail. These details helped convey the emotions of each character. Overall, this story is well written and kids would adore the puppy because who doesn't love puppies?
Love Always, Catherine
Wow, what an unexpected journey this book took us on! My son and I loved reading about Beau and his big adventure. Loved the illustrations!
Pretzels and Adventure is an adorable picture book about a dog, Beau, who gets lost while playing with his boy, Jasper, in a park on the way to the family's new farm. I have read quite a few books about lost or loose dogs, but for some reason, this one feels special. Beau has some very unusual adventures. Both Beau and Jasper loving pretzels is a superb addition. Amy Howard's descriptions of Beau's thoughts and actions are so authentic. She must be a dog lover! I loved that his ears flapped and collar clinked only when he was happy. Although the book contains sad parts, all ends well. The illustrations by Gus Duenas are precisely on target for the book's tone. Beau's eyes themselves are so emotive! A favorite drawing was when Beau used a paw to cover one eye and his ear to cover the other while he and Jasper played hide and seek.
Thank you to NetGalley and Indigo River Publishing. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book provided by the publisher, Indigo River Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cute book for dog-loving children! My daughter immediately was excited to read this when she saw the adorable dog on the cover, and the illustrations throughout were precious. The book certainly had a sense of adventure! A little more explanation about the farm home and pretzels on the front end would've better set up the rest of the story, but dog lovers may enjoy it nonetheless!
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This was an okay story that might be liked by kids who love dogs. It just didn’t make much sense at all. I kept questioning things more than enjoying this story. I did enjoy it but it could have been better.
Beau is a clever and adorable dog who gets lost while trying to find his owner when they’re playing hide and and seek. They stopped at a park on their way to their new home so nothing in the environment is familiar to Beau. We follow the adventurous but short story of how he finds his way back to his owner. I liked his encounter with the sweet girl on the bus.
This was a cute little story. We have a basset hound as a part of our family so my kids enjoyed this even more since the dog looked like our Ollie.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! This is a very cute book that shows the bond between a dog and his owner. The illustrations are wonderfully drawn. Amy Howard did a great job outlining Beau's adventure. The paragraphs are short enough that it's easy for kids to follow.
This was a cute story about a dog and his owner .There are also lessons to be learned .Beau loved pretzels and his owner Jasper .Beau smelling pretzels got him on a train away from Jasper .He was sad .He did get pretzels from girl on train then set out to find Jasper .The illustration was on point .A good book for kindergarten age group children .
This book in physical format would be a delight for any child.
It’s brightly coloured, vibrant and lots of detail in the pictures, so, I think this would be great even before a child can read it for themselves. It will give endless of pleasure.
So the family move….
The colour RED is involved
The game HIDE AND SEEK
And smell
And getting lost.
I can see lots to talk about within this little book.
The images were the best part of the story. I thought the actual story itself was cute, but not great. My kindergarten son was not impressed. It didn't hold his attention. He said it was too long.
Beau goes on an adventure after finding himself lost.
Beau goes on this big - colourful and dramatic journey to find his family after losing them during a game of hide and seek.
Story was very cutesy, art was nice but not to my taste - my two year old will love the dog but I don't imagine she will be able to read of throughly enjoy this book until she is quite a few years older.
Thanks for this x
Pretzels and Adventure, the next story that Hasti and I read together is about Beau, a very lovely puppy who loves pretzels, plays and adventure, actually his adventure was more like lost in the city but was cute and happy anyway.
Thank you to Indigo River Publishing via NetGalley for ARC, Hasti and I give our honest thoughts, Pub Date 30 Apr 2024
Indigo River Publishing and NetGalley provided with a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review, so I would like to say thanks to them!
This was such a cute story. Beau is at the park playing hide and seek with his owner, but gets lost. He goes on a few adventures trying to find his family and we get to hear all about them.
I enjoyed this book so much that I read it to my 5 year old daughter as well. She doesn't normally have the attention span to sit down and listen to a book, so I was shocked by her reaction to this one. She was very invested in the story and kept inching closer and closer to my iPad. She loved the illustrations as much as she loved the story. At the end of the story, she told he that it was her favorite story in a long time.
Beau, a cute puppy, finds himself on quite the adventure trying to make his way back to his family. While playing hide and seek with his human family he accidentally gets on a bus all by himself. He sniffs his way around looking for his family. Happy ending! And he likes pretzels :)
Pretzels and Adventure is a cute book with wonderful illustrations. My grandchildren loved Beau's adventure and we have read this book several times.
I read this with my younger brother. I felt that the book was too short and would have liked it to be a longer so the story could feel complete. The art style was very cute and my brother enjoyed the art.
I thought that this was a lovely story
The characters in the book are great and Beau is lovely. We follow his story and emotions in the book after he mistakenly gets on a bus when he is playing hide and seek with his owner and best friend Jasper. The story has a nice ending.
The story is well written and it is easy to follow and the illustrations are wonderful and they worked really well with the story.
It is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!
