Description
‘Brilliant, part crime thriller and part political manifesto’. Book of the Week The Sun
‘By turns horrifying. A tale of a devastating clash between big game and big money. Brave, riveting and terrifyingly relevant.’ Sarah Sultoon
From South Africa to Zanzibar, from Kenya to Britain, activists are battling to save lion prides, today more threatened by extinction than rhinos and elephants, as a result of illegal wildlife trading. Having thwarted murderous poachers in The Elephant Conspiracy, the Veteran, Thandi and Mkhize are back battling to save lion prides from being killed for their claws, teeth and bones. As the demand for lion parts soars, impoverished local communities are being incentivised to poach, and the fight against this illegal plunder becomes ever more vicious.
Struggling to defeat the international criminal syndicate responsible for poaching, the team find themselves embroiled in mafia-style smuggling, illicit night flights, tense shoot-outs, and an encounter with a protégé of Vladimir Putin.

Peter Hain is very good with writing well-researched facts and figures about sometimes not so easily understandable subjects like politics, economy, and war, in enjoyable ways for readers. Illegal wildlife trade, politics, and the protection of endangered species are very close to my own heart, and I am so happy to see someone writing about these issues in fiction (with facts included). In this book I especially enjoyed reading about South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda, also all very close to my own heart, and the way the good and the bad regarding the protection and trade in wildlife have been handled in the respective countries.
I think many people would benefit fro reading this book, because not only is it entertaining (yet hard to read at times due to the subject), but there are so many interesting things I think everyone in the world should know. It always bugs me a lot after reading these kind of books how little most people care, and prefer not to think about these issues. Maybe it is simply easier for them that way? I want more of these books! Time for people to read, soak it in, and act!
Thanks Muswell Press, NetGalley and Peter Hain for this ARC of the Lion Conspiracy.
As someone who’s no stranger to Peter Hain, the politician, and activist but new to his writing- I can honestly say that I was hooked from the first word!
To say I found the book fascinating yet sad because the systemised and endemic elimination of this magnificent beast is sad, eye opening and so very disturbing. I had to put the book down many times. This is not because of the writing, but because of the subject matter. This book brings to fore the saying - to be better is to know better, to know better is to learn better . Needless to say - I buying books 1 &2 in the conspiracy series. This is one book that will haunt me and stay with me for a long long time!
