Description
Sarah Kovac was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), a rare congenital birth defect that left her with arms that she could barely use. Growing up, she was the only one in her class with a disability, setting her apart as “different” and unpopular. Realizing her unique place in the world, Sarah began adapting, working to her strengths, and eventually learned to use her feet to do such activities as changing her son's diapers, making dinner, putting on makeup, and even typing on the computer--even as she grew in spiritual and emotional maturity and independence in exceptional ways. Picked up by national news network CNN, Sarah’s story went viral and she was suddenly presented with a platform from which to share her love for God. In Capable Arms brings readers on Sarah’s journey, crying with her through intense frustration and the desire to be perfect, cheering her through physical training and pain, and admiring her eventual spiritual surrender as she let go of her insecurities and let God use her . . . even her crippled arms. Sarah brings readers face to face with their own struggles, challenges them with questions about self-worth and fear, then offers guidance, wisdom, and inspiration for finding hope—and healing—in the arms of the One who loves them no matter what.

“In Capable Arms is a refreshingly honest, beautiful story. It’s a must-read for any who have felt inadequate, like they weren’t ‘enough.’ And it’s a reminder that God can use anything—even our most painful situations—to bring about something beautiful. Sarah’s book will make you laugh and make you cry, so grab a tissue.”
—Lindsey Bell, author of Searching for Sanity, a parenting devotion to be released soon; minister’s wife and mother of two squirrely boys and four babies in heaven
“Sarah Kovac says every life is a story worth telling, and in her deeply moving memoir she tells her remarkable story very well. I’ve known Sarah most of her life, and I’ve constantly been amazed at how the limited use of her arms has set virtually no limit on what she can do. To the list of things Sarah can do without her arms we can now add this: write a very fine book! In Capable Arms is a poignant mix of pain and joy, struggle and hope. It’s a delightful book to read because it’s a compelling story well-told, and it’s a book worth reading because how Sarah has faced her challenges is how we should all face our own challenges.”
—Brian Zahnd, Lead Pastor, Word of Life Church, St. Joseph, Missouri, author of Unconditional? and Beauty Will Save the World
“Sarah Kovac challenges us to look our insecurities and struggles in the eye and to know that not even our scariest flaws can keep us from God’s love. Sarah’s story will speak to each of us, no matter where we are in our journey of life.”
—Erin Smalley, national speaker, author of Grown Up Girlfriends, coauthor and cofounder of marriage ministry with husband, Greg Smalley, at Focus on the Family
“In Capable Arms chronicles the journey of a young woman’s search for significance, love, and God’s unique plan for her life. Would she find the acceptance she so longed for despite the fact that, to some, her beautiful face might just be overshadowed by her lack of ‘normal arms’ and the resulting need to execute most of life’s tasks with her feet instead? This riveting story will cause your eyes to leak one minute and your heart to sing the next. Then, as you turn the last page, you’ll find yourself declaring not only, ‘What an inspiring woman!’ but more importantly, ‘What an amazing God.’”
—Karen Ehman, Proverbs 31 Ministries Director of Speakers, author of six books including LET. IT. GO. and How to Stop Running the Show & Start Walking in Faith, wife of Todd and mother of three
“With tender vulnerability, Sarah Kovac beautifully shares her intriguing journey of living with incapable arms. While sharing an amazing story of God’s faithfulness, this book lovingly guides readers to lay the trials of their own lives in the capable arms of Jesus. Don’t forget your tissues.”
—Nicole O’Dell, author, speaker, and founder of Choose NOW Ministries
“It is always a good thing when a new book is written, especially from a life lived; edification, knowledge, and (if a Christian book) spiritual uplifting are likely guaranteed. Having met Sarah and read her book In Capable Arms, I believe that the challenges she faced, and how she adapted to her situation and stayed true to it, will encourage you as much as it encouraged me. Kovac learned how to turn the truth outward and ‘unlabel’ the disabled around her, as she allowed grace to embrace her. When we acknowledge our difficulties, as the author did, we will find that we too can be ‘in capable arms.’”
—Karen Chin, Christian Lifestyle Magazine
“Wow! I read, In Capable Arms, by Sarah Kovac, in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. No longer will my inadequacies define me or stop me but rather point me toward God where true worth and purpose are found. Sarah’s story will captivate you, challenge you, and inspire you to be all God created you to be—flaws and all.”
—Micca Campbell, national speaker and author of An Untroubled Heart
“Sarah’s honest account of adapting to a life of limited usage of her arms is incredibly motivating and inspirational. In addition, it is also comforting, exciting, and reassuring to read the proof of a loving God who cares for us even when we are in the midst of really hard stuff. I loved reading about Sarah’s relentless pursuit of living a life of normalcy despite what others might have told her as well as the story of her pregnancy and the birth of her sweet son. It’s all simply further proof of God’s mercy and love not just for Sarah but for us all.”
—Natalie Snapp, author of Heart Sisters: Creating Love and Support Between Women, to be released by Abingdon Press in 2014
“In her book, In Capable Arms, Sarah Kovac takes readers on her own captivating and compelling story of how she overcame adversity and refused to allow her physical limitations to define her. In Capable Arms is an inspiring story of faith and triumph that will help readers identify their own fears, insecurities, and limitations and be challenged to courageously overcome them as they discover that God is faithful even when life is hard.”
—Stephanie Shott, popular Bible teacher, author, and founder of The M.O.M. Initiative, a ministry devoted to helping the body of Christ make mentoring missional
“In Capable Arms is a story of tenacity, courage, struggle, gratitude, and hope—and it’s a story for everyone, because as author Sarah Kovac writes, ‘Everyone’s a mess, and everyone needs grace and help.’ Kovac’s story is captivating and quickly becomes a just-one-more-chapter kind of read. Readers will find themselves identifying with Sarah in unexpected and delightful, thought-provoking ways. Through it all she gently leans into God’s truths and urges readers to do the same.”

“Sarah’s life is a powerful reminder to
us all, ‘With God, all things are possible.’
Every person touched by a disability can learn valuable lessons from this
beautiful woman and her family. More importantly, society’s views of people
with a handicap will be positively altered after reading In Capable Arms.”
—Ann Joyner, special needs mother and advocate
“For any of us who have been touched by disability, telling our story can be a powerful, liberating experience. But when telling our story also points our readers to the grace and sufficiency of God, our struggles are transformed into a life-giving testimony. Thank you, Sarah, for allowing your struggles to point to the True North—the God who is capable!”
—Sharon C. Hensley, author of Homeschooling Children with Special Needs
