Description

What exactly is Number Three?

Laurel’s husband Bob insists that Laurel and their three little boys move from Boston to the wealthy, isolated town of Northington despite the fact that they can barely afford a home in the exclusive suburb. Laurel agrees to try country living, but she quickly becomes overwhelmed attempting to deal with wells, septic systems, rodents and bugs, not to mention the snooty neighbors. The situation between Laurel and Bob deteriorates to the point that the marriage is virtually falling apart. However, Bob still refuses to move back to Boston. When Bob is found dead under mysterious circumstances, Laurel is indicted for murder.

Enter Catherine (Cat) Carroll, a reporter assigned to cover the trial of her former high school classmate Laurel. Cat thinks that Laurel just might be guilty as charged and is determined to get to the truth. She employs the help of rival journalist and on-again off-again boyfriend Jack Heggarty. Jack helps Cat search for clues into the mystery surrounding Bob's death, all the while trying to get back into Cat's good graces with varying levels of success. Cat tries to navigate her relationship with Jack while delving into the mystery of what exactly happened to Bob Morrow.

During the contentious trial, Laurel is skewered by the media and her new neighbors. However, an unexpected set of circumstances eventually reveals the truth behind who killed Bob Morrow and the mystery of Number Three.
