Hiding Lies is a dual narrated psychological thriller horror novel from a debut author that I fell in love with immediately. I love the POV from the serial killer and that the author did research on real life serial killers to create character Adam. Page turning, dark, and I gasped out loud. I'd recommend this for any book club and fans of thrillers and horror!

Spice Rating : 0.5/5🌶️
Tropes : Thriller, Suspense, Serial Killer

What a book! I’m speechless. I just got done with the book and it was a wild ride.

First up, check the Trigger Warnings before picking up the book. It has some sensitive topics discussed in detail, gore and mentions of abuse and trauma.

That being said, Book starts with a bang, it sucked me right in. It was very engaging and fast paced right off the bat. I love the writing style as well. Didn’t strike me as a debut. The book gets particularly interesting after the 60% mark, it turns into a proper cat and mouse chase where the readers are kept guessing about what could possibly happen next.

I was surprised that we get the serial killer's motive and MO very early on itself in the book. I kept wondering if it was a premature reveal but as the story progressed everything started making sense. There was a fair bit of romance, unexpected but pleasantly surprised.
When you say “morally grey”, the characters in this book describe morally grey to a tee. You hate them, but cannot hate them. They are all victim to circumstances and trying to best work with what they are dealt. What surprised me the most was how the author drew the character sketches. Each character was so grey; the victims, the perpetrator, the investigator and the innocents, no one was spared. Good exploration of human psyche. A lot of parts of this book were very emotional and hard to read simply because of the detailing that went into it. That being said, crime is crime and that is where we separate fiction from reality.

As someone with Forensic background myself, the detailing and writings were well researched, well done and interesting. The case files given to read are a nice touch. I love mixed formats within the books, keeps it compelling.
Knowing that this book is part of a newly emerging niche of thrillers, I’m sure it will get the hype it deserves.
I will definitely read more by the author, the book is quality entertainment.

If you enjoyed the You series, The Mindfuck series or The Butcher and the Wren, this book will be right up your alley!

I received an ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you to Netgalley, the Author and the Publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ooooooh boy, what a twisty little book. This was incredibly unnerving from the start. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of Lydia, I found myself hooked by her character. The graphic descriptions of murder were a little much for my taste, but this whole book read like a Criminal Minds episode and had me thinking and trying to predict the ending. I also loved the setting, anything set in Oregon is a win for me. A truly gruesome story.

What a wild book! Read in less than 12 hours because I needed to know what happened. A story of a serial killer and a foresenic crime scene photographer that fall in love. Loved the alternating view points and short chapters. Keep me very interested, and makes it more interesting to read.

“I still remember standing outside the blazing house. I wasn't sorry.”

Review: This book gets you in a chokehold right from the first paragraph and doesn’t let up the whole way through! I couldn’t put it down and devoured it in one sitting.

Its dark and gritty undertones flow throughout the unwinding story and touches on the dark nature of seemingly uncomplex but deep main characters. The writing style allowed effortless reading and I was instantly pulled into a twisted, perverse world, eagerly if even dragged into it somewhat unwilling. I found myself feeling the characters and loved the exploration into their minds and the monster that can be created by actions caused by society’s darkest taboos. I loved the telling from both main characters perspectives, which enabled a deeper understanding of their mind frame and motives.

I was pleasantly surprised to read the authors acknowledgments of inspiration from some of my favourite stories including those by Thomas Harris as these stories came into my head through reading the book and gave me the same gritty, dark, macabre feel.
In conclusion if you loved The Red Dragon and Hannibal or the series You, then you will LOVE this book!

I’m looking forward to future books and can see Stephanie Rose becoming one of my favourite horror/thriller authors.

4.25/5 stars! I picked this book up specifically for its dark, edgy cover. There was a lot of internal conflict for Lydia throughout the book. The storyline was built up well and I didn't see the final twist coming, which I appreciate. I love the perspective inside such a dark mind and it kept me engaged in the story. Will be looking for more books by this author.

I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Hooked from the get! What a Rollercoaster. I wanted to hate the characters but just couldn't. Getting the serial killer's POV made this such a fun read, and it didn't give debut author to me.

This book was a 5/5 for me and Stephanie has become one of my favourite authors!
The cover is what drew me in at first and the description sold it for me.
I'm a huge fan of criminal minds and it reminded me a lot of it, I really hope Stephanie writes more books like this.
With this type of book it's hard to have a good exciting twist since most have the same plot twists but this one I didn't see coming at all!
It's refreshing to have a book that isn't like a lot of the mainstream popular books and still give me a burning need to know what happens next.

When the system is broken, the broken create a new system - in the aftermath of horror, horror becomes the comfort, and what happens when you meet someone just like you who took a slightly different path? Who will catch who?

This was a fun, gory, traumatizing ride. If you don’t like graphic scenes, don’t read this. The author provides an in depth trigger warning at the beginning, and even with that my stomach was like, “hello, it’s me” at some points.

We follow two povs:

Lydia: A crime scene photographer in Oregon. She has a terrible, sad, past and is dealing with it by putting all of her effort into her work. Her demons literally coat every inch of her apartment, and there is a darkness bubbling from deep within.

Adam: Equally horrific past/childhood. Scary. Very scary.

There is a serial killer on the loose in Oregon, and he is targeting -at first- campers in secluded areas. Investigators (and Lydia) are starting to piece together his motives and patterns, yet they can’t seem to precisely figure it out. The bodies are piling up, and so are the photographs.
During an outing, Lydia bumps into Adam at his place of work. They are both smitten instantly, and so begins a whirlwind romance seeped with trauma bonding, pictures, and pocket knives.
I think this should have been longer. I wanted to be in their heads more. I wanted them to connect even more deeply and follow them on this… adventure(lol) together. I wanted more Frank, wanted more insight on the impending investigations, etc. This lil popcorn thriller was like a drug to me, okay? Release a sequel, I beg! I refuse to be satisfied with that ending.

A quick and dark read with a very intriguing main characters. I read it in one sitting but there was just something amiss that kept me from fully being engaged with the story and the characters.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This fast paced dark thriller follows the paths of a forensic photographer and a serial killer, whose lives colide in more ways than one.

As someone who loves camping and recently enjoyed some boondocking through the PNW, this book was an especially enjoyable read for me.

While initially unsure about the main character, Lydia, and encountering a few moments that didn't quite hit the mark, I found it easy to immerse myself and become captivated by its storyline.

I highly recommend reading his book but be sure to read the trigger warnings beforehand.

Thank you Mad Axe Media & Stephanie for the opportunity to read this book and give an honest review. Looking forward to seeing what Stephanie writes in the future!

Man oh man this book!

It’s a Dexter-esque thriller that follows Lydia a forensic photographer. Lydia has a dark past and many secrets that haunt her, but she finds a bit relief when being immersed in her first serial killer case.

It’s best to go into this one blind but know that the writing is great, there are twists and turns and you might just find yourself sympathising with the murder.

Thank you to Net Galley and Mad Axe Media for the opportunity to read an e-ARC of Stephanie Rose's 'Hiding Lies'.

A PNW set, dual POV thriller that gives a strong mix of Caroline Kepnes' 'You' and your favorite crime TV series. Thriller meets dark romance meets horror! I appreciated the insight into the minds of both detective and killer. Lydia and Adam were each scarily charming and had me hooked by the very first few chapters. We really get to know Adam's brain during his chapters, but Lydia left me wishing I knew a bit more of hers! The trigger warning could definitely be appreciated by some due to a handful of scenes which were quite descriptive, without being excessive. I do kindaaaa wish that there would have been a little more to the ending.. not like a happily ever after for anyone or anything, but maybe not such a big dot dot dot. I just want to know what happens next!! Ahhh.

All in all, the story had an exhilarating pace, without missing pieces and was truly a read I anticipated getting back to! A multi-genre as a debut novel?? Incredible! I will definitely be on the lookout for any more books written by Stephanie Rose!

A terrifying horror thriller that is written great. I definitely want to read more from the author. A dual POV between detective and killer. Lydia is a forensic photographer on her first case. Adam is the killer and we really get a look into his mind and backstory. There are descriptive crime scenes with gore. Its a quick read that leaves you wanting more.

i lost sleep over this book.

it was a dark and spooky read, dual pov, and right away i was noticing a lot of parallels between the two main characters. the storyline kept me hooked, and i was equal parts horrified and intrigued.

unputdownable.

i rate it five stars!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

WOW!!! Went in completely blind with this book and I am shocked. If Dexter and CSI had a love child, it would be this book!!
So interesting to be inside the mind of a morally grey serial killer and wondering if you’re actually mentally okay because you’re agreeing with them!!!??? Insane and equally beautiful. Going to checking out more of Rose’s books after this one!!
Thank you Stephanie Rose for sending me this ARC. This review is voluntary and my own personal opinion.

This was a quick dark read following Lydia Walker, a forensic photographer who uses her craft to 'deal' with her traumatizing childhood spent in foster care until she crosses paths with a serial killer whom she finds she agrees with more than she should.

This story really sucked me in, I read it in a day! I've always been fascinated with the macabre so getting to follow Lydia around at her job and experience how she investigates the crime scenes was a great time.

I was hoping for a little more character development from Lydia and felt like some of her thoughts were conflicting. Adam was an exciting character, I enjoyed how ruthless he was without making him seem crazy.

This book wasn't similar at all but had me thinking a lot about None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney, so maybe if you liked that one, you'd enjoy this story!

Thanks to NetGalley and Stephanie Rose for the eARC of this book! All opinions are my own.

One of the best horror books I've ever read!! I don't usually read horror so the fact I read one at all is a feat in itself! Stephanie has a fantastic voice and I imagine her having many successful books in the future! A great debut.

This was phenomenal — mind-blowing, unique, and enthralling from start to finish. Usually when a story is fast paced, character building takes a hit. That was definitely not the case with this one. We got very unique and deeply flawed and human characters while also keeping the story moving forward at a nice speed that had me binging this book in one sitting. The love story element was a pleasant surprise as well, and it was reminiscent of YOU by Caroline Kepnes in a more entrancing way. Would love to see a sequel or at least more of these characters in the future and I'll be highly recommending this to my following.

Stephanie Rose hits hard with her debut novel, "Hiding Lies." This psychological thriller takes readers on a rollercoaster ride through the twisted mind of a serial killer. From the get-go, it's clear that this book isn't for the faint-hearted. Trigger warnings abound, with graphic scenes that delve into dark territories like child and animal abuse. But while the subject matter might be disturbing, Rose's writing is undeniably clever.

One of the standout features of the book is its use of multiple points of view. We get glimpses into the minds of various characters, including the chilling perspective of the serial killer. It's a bold move that adds depth to the narrative, allowing readers to truly understand the motivations behind the heinous acts depicted.

However, it's worth noting that the ending might leave some readers feeling a bit unsatisfied. Personally, I found myself wishing for a different conclusion, though I can't quite put my finger on what that would entail. Despite this minor gripe, "Hiding Lies" kept me hooked from start to finish. It's a testament to Rose's talent that she can grip readers with her first novel.

Overall, "Hiding Lies" is a promising debut from Stephanie Rose. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea due to its dark themes, those who enjoy a gritty, unflinching thriller will find plenty to love here. I, for one, am eagerly anticipating Rose's next book.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you, Stephanie Rose and NetGalley, for the ARC. I leave this review voluntarily and happily. Also, thank you publishers for your hard work!

This was a phenomenal read. I couldn't stop once I started. I absolutely loved the two points of view that we get to explore during the entire book. The details and the passion in this book were very much felt. You can't help but feel a strange connection to the main character and hope for the best. You hope she gets to be with this guy she meets, and just so much happens, it makes me want to scream.

A serial killer that kills those that lie on the outside. He thinks that by doing that, he's making the world a better place for the people he's saving and the world in general. The main character is documenting the kills and learning all she can about him. She feels something for him. What's to happen? Will they meet? Will she eventually show her true colors? Read and find out.

This book is fast-paced and a book well worth the read. It deserved every star I'm giving it. If I could give it more, I certainly would.

Lydia Walker is a forensic photographer working boring cases over and over again. Then one day she's called to the scene of a grizzly murder in the woods. All around the bodies are photos marked with the word "lies". Lydia is immediately drawn into the case, her love of true crime and the dark side of death shining through her normally quiet personality. When things take a turn in her personal life she becomes deeper involved in this case. Who is Lydia really? Will she face the music of reality or trudge into her dark side.

I loved this book. Not only are there some gruesome scenes, there are also some plays at humanity. We as people all have some dislike for another person. Lydia is no different. I flew through this book. This is a debut novel you'll want to read. I only wish there was more! Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book.

Let me start by thanking NetGalley and everyone else for the advanced copy of this book.

Release date: October 2024

I freaking loved this book. A forensic photographer with an interest in the macabre works on a case involving a serial killer and she’s not disturbed, she’s interested. She wants to know how his mind works and why it’s these particular victims. Almost like she doesn’t want to catch him, she wants to study him. This is a multiple pov story from hers and the killers povs. I just devoured it. I’m gonna buy the physical copy as soon as it comes out.

If you are a fan of anything that has to do with TV shows like criminal minds, CSI, or law and order then this book is the book for you. I loved that this book was based off of a serial killer and a forensic photographer, and made it sort of into a romance, but with the thrill and excitement of an episode of what one would expect in a true crime TV show. Seeing how the main characters evolve and then meet and connect with one another, and all of the things that come from it is written so well and keeps you hooked throughout the entire read. Even the end of the book made me want to read more and left me wondering what was going to happen next, and on the edge of my seat like there is no way this can end here, but overall I loved every minute of it!

WHAT I JUST READ!😱
This book was so twisty and disturbing that kept me on the edge of my seat!

A Forensic Photographer and a serial killer? Say no more.

The shared secrets and childhood traumas, combined with cat and mouse style, kept me hooked since the first chapter.

Is fast paced and I really enjoyed that I got to learn more about the characters, without adding any extra irrelevant events, just the important details to make more disturbing and interesting at the same time.

I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend.

Thank you NetGalley, Stephanie Rose, and Mad Axe Media for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley, but the opinions expressed here are entirely my own. Huge thanks to the author and the publisher for the opportunity to dive into this exhilarating read!

Wow, this book is a rollercoaster! From the very beginning, it grabs you and doesn't let go..

What struck me most was the unconventional approach right from the start. The pacing is relentless, drawing you deeper into the narrative with every turn of the page. The writing style is so polished, it's hard to believe this is a debut novel. And just when you think you've got a handle on things, the story takes a sharp turn around the 60% mark, plunging you into a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase that'll keep you guessing until the very end.

One thing that surprised me was how early the author reveals the serial killer's motives and methods. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that every twist and revelation is meticulously planned. And amidst all the intrigue, there's an unexpected undercurrent of romance that adds yet another layer to the morally ambiguous characters. You'll find yourself simultaneously hating and empathizing with them, a testament to the author's skill in crafting complex personalities.

The character development is masterful. Each individual is painted in shades of gray, from the victims to the perpetrator to the investigators themselves. It's an exploration of the human psyche, making for some emotionally charged and at times difficult reading. But therein lies the brilliance – the line between fiction and reality blurs, forcing you to confront uncomfortable truths about crime and morality.

In a genre saturated with formulaic plots, this book stands out as a breath of fresh air. It's part of a new wave of thrillers that aren't afraid to push boundaries and defy expectations. And mark my words, it's destined to become a cult classic. I, for one, can't wait to see what the author has in store next.

This book is definitely not one for someone with a weak stomach. Multiple trigger warnings exist for this title such as domestic violence, animal abuse, child abuse, etc. Lydia grows up as a tragic case forced to live through the traumas of the foster care system. After aging out of the system, she channels her “therapy” for her past into her love of photography. She is a forensic photographer who becomes involved in a case that connects all too closely with her dark feelings towards those that have wronged her. She finds herself looking at crimes in a different light than other investigators. As her relationship with a man she meets at a bookstore grows, she learns they have much more in common than one could ever imagine. The story spins itself to a close leaving the reader wishing for a bit more closure and detail. Overall, it was a well built story with believable characters.

****Thank you to NetGalley and Stephanie Rose for a free ebook copy in exchange for my honest opinion****

Is killing always wrong? I was pulled in by the main premise of this short, dark thriller/romance.
I'm giving the story 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4). The writing was good and the characters were complex.
Lydia is a forensic photographer with a troubled past. She is brought into a case, and quickly realizes that it is the work of a budding serial killer.
I enjoy Lydia's perspective. I have empathy for her trauma and I love her drive. I also love the fact that she is a horror and true crime addict. Her relationship with detective Frank is very sweet, and I wanted more of that to be showcased.
Adam is the budding serial killer. His backstory was a little confusing to me; and I had trouble understanding his pain and motivation for killing. I guess it just wasn't enough for me to have sympathy for him and his actions (well, most of his actions).
Why did this not get a higher rating from me? I have some issues with the way the story develops. It doesn't completely work for me. I hesitate to say more, because I don't want to give anything away. However, I would say that this deserves to be read and decided on for yourself.
I look forward to reading more from Stephanie Rose.

📚 Book Review 📚

This is a dark and twisted love story between Lydia, a forensic photographer and Adam, a charmingly sadistic serial killer.

The book is written from both perspectives of the main characters and it’s pacy, intriguing and deathly enthralling.

There are some pretty horrific descriptions and emotive scenes but as a horror, and a thriller with a hint of twisted romance, it is a great read. I really enjoyed it, it is well written and the author has definitely done her homework. I am very much looking forward to reading her next book, although I won’t be going camping any time soon!🏕️

I’d like to thank Mad Axe Media, NetGalley and the author for the arc and the fantastic opportunity, in exchange for my honest feedback 😊

A thrilling horror novel from a debut author, this book was fast-paced and exciting from cover to cover. This was an exploration of what unresolved trauma can do to a person, what it can cause them to do, who it can shape them into.

Lydia and Adam were the perfect cat and mouse duo as a forensic photographer and a serial killer, and the story has you both rooting for each of them and fearing that the worst might happen.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, I just with there had been MORE. Sometimes it felt rushed, like conclusions were drawn or decisions were made a bit more hastily than they should've been. I would have liked to have seen a bit more time taken with character development and the evolution of their relationship. That being said, I would highly recommend this book and if a sequel were to come, I would pick it up immediately, because the ending felt slightly abrupt and there just wasn't enough, it definitely left me wanting more!

I'll be keeping an eye on Stephanie Rose and crossing my fingers for more of her work!

My first pre release review, and I loved this book!
The first 30~ pages nearly had me put it down, but it's worth pushing through for the rest of the book, it was so entertaining and I really enjoyed it.
It's a bit slow going at first, then the rest of the book is fairly fast paced and exciting, the plot is well written and almost funny, and I liked the characters, they felt like actual people.

I will be recommending this book, it had me guessing what would happen next right up to the end.

The book is a dual narrators psychological thriller horror. The author is a debut author and I was immediately charmed by her writing style. I loved the serial killer’s point of view and the fact that she did a lot of research on actual serial killers in order to create the character of Adam. The pages turned, the darkness deepened, and I literally had to hold my breath. Highly recommend this book for your book club and thrillers/horror fans!

Lydia, a forensic photographer, is living life through her photographs. Until she is called to come to the most gruesome case of her career and then meets someone worth while, Adam. As the case starts to unfold, her personal life and work become intertwined. Lydia must decide if she will follow her heart or her morales.

Hiding lies is a book in its own league. It gave me the creepy vibes that I wanted from it. Really enjoyed the writing style and story, thought just slightly predictable. I’d recommend this to anyone who likes a dark crime mystery!

TW: Contains detailed descriptions of torture, murder, sexual assault, domestic abuse, child abuse, child death, and mentions of animal abuse.
Stephanie Rose's chilling new thriller, "Hiding Lies", offers a gripping narrative that will keep you on the edge of your seat. As mentioned by other reviewers, it blends the suspense of Caroline Kepnes' "You" with the intensity of an episode of "Criminal Minds."
Dual perspectives provide depth to the characters of Lydia, a complex forensic photographer, and Adam, a terrifying yet strangely charismatic serial killer.
While it was a short read, the author did a good job of pacing the story and allowing the characters to develop naturally.
I really enjoyed this book and eagerly anticipate future works from this talented author.

Ok so I really really enjoyed this. There is a serial killer/love story-esque feel to it. The writing was very good and descriptive. If you are squeamish I would definitely refrain from this one, as there are several moments in the book that could be considered disturbing to some readers. I loved the forensic aspect of the book through Lydia, as well as the POV of the killer through Adam. I loved this book, it’s very fast paced and easy to dive into! Overall, a solid 4.5 for me! Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!

This book had me addicted from the start! It was so intense that I could not wait to see the twist. Authot knows how to deliver the breath taking, draw dropping twist that we all know and love and never expect the ending. I believe this book is her best one yet but I say that everytime I read one of her books. Thank you for allowing me to read your book in advance.

I have a hard time with alternating POV stories, but this one worked really well.

I initially thought this was going to be a generic thriller but was much more psychological horror, with a sprinkle of slasher. Some scenes were particularly gruesome. Oh, and it’s also a romance but, creepily, it works.

While it was easy to see where the story was going, I stilled enjoyed the ride.

I think many people who are fans of true crime will love it for the psychological aspect, and the extreme horror freaks (me) will love it for the blood.

Hiding Lies is a brilliant, beautifully crafted psychological thriller read, that you will be incapable of putting down. Told from the POV of two very dark and haunted minds, this book captured my attention from the very first line to the very last.

The author gives readers a detailed look into the background of our MCs, allowing readers to have a better understanding of the complexity of their minds and lives, along with the inner mental and emotional turmoil they face each day, being haunted by their past.
This book was fast paced and never held a dull moment. I really liked how the author always made sure that there was something happening on these pages. I am firm believer that books under 300 pages, should have suspense all throughout- this book delivered in that regard.

Another thing I really appreciated was how the author didn't make things overly gruesome or gory. As a reader I was able to read and digest everything without feeling overwhelmed. There was no reliance on shock value to carry the story and really made it even more enjoyable for me.
I really liked both these MCs in this book and thoroughly enjoyed both their POVs; even the romance was a welcome surprise and didn't distract from the plot.
Overall, this was a really enthralling read and I would probably re-read again in the future.

4.75 rounded up for Goodreads!

Dexter meets Joe Goldberg

Imagine a positive Version of Joe and Love!

I loved that the book got straight to the point. I was gripped from the very first sentice.

It’s like a merge of Criminal Minds, CSI, You and Dexter.

The only issue I had was that the ending felt rushed but on the whole it was a fast paced thriller.

Fantastic quick thriller read!!

Main characters Adam, a troubled man who’s had a thirst for kill, and Lydia, a forensic photographer who’s got her own dark past, meet in a great dual perspective story line that is imaginative and detailed from the start! I loved the “You” (Netflix) vibes I got from this book!

I took off a star for an abrupt ending that left me needing more, but overall I really enjoyed this campsite thriller!

I absolutely LOVED this book. I was originally drawn to it because of the cover & I was not disappointed! I’m a huge fan of shows like Criminal Minds & The Mentalist, so if you are too, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy the premise of Hiding Lies. Such a unique storyline with alternating POVs of the serial killer & the forensic photographer working the case. The psychological aspect is fascinating but also so REAL; early childhood trauma, sexual abuse, anxiety, feeling “not normal,” relationships & friendships or lack of, dark thoughts. I will definitely read anything this author publishes! 5/5 stars for me!

Title: Hiding Lies
Author: Stephanie Rose

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Thoughts: Im so back and forth on what I'd rate this one. It starts out like stoping and catching a serial killer. Then morphs into a dark and twisted love story. The transition wasn't bad and I enjoyed how the story evolved. I really loved how macabre this one was as a whole.
However, the evolution left aspects of the story behind and a lot was just up in the air with the final scene.
There was sooooo much I adored about it though... I connected with the FMC and I could rationalize the MMC. Their relationship throughout the story developed into a "good for you two" vibe and I wanted their happiness.
Then again, the big reveal to the FMC was very uneventful and that kind made me feel like I was standing awkwardly with my hands in my pockets while reading it.
Over all this was a solid concept and I hit a point where I just could not put the damn thing down because I had to know what was going to become of the plot and the characters. But again some really important aspects got left behind and made the story feel rushed at certain points. I also craved a bit more from the ending, so I'm sitting here debating where this leaves me and I think if an author has me this invested in their book than they deserve the higher rating.

I would really love to see what this author comes out with next.

This serial killer gave ALL of the Ted Bundy vibes. He was so charming and helpful to those around him and he was someone you would never suspect.. I also loved that we got both POV's from the protagonist as well as the serial killer. The different POV's gave the book such an intense and fast pace that had me unable to put this down. I will now read anything Stephanie Rose writes! 4.5/5 for me!

Title: Unraveling Dark Secrets: A Gripping Review of "Hiding Lies" by Stephanie Rose

As an ARC reader of "Hiding Lies" by Stephanie Rose, I found myself drawn into a gripping and unrelenting tale of darkness and intrigue that left me breathless from start to finish.

The story centers around Lydia Walker, a forensic photographer haunted by a traumatic past. Assigned to a case involving the gruesome murder of a camping couple, Lydia's personal and professional worlds collide as she delves deeper into the investigation. With each new revelation, she uncovers a personal connection to the case that forces her to confront her own demons.

Rose's writing is unapologetically brutal and relentless, plunging readers into a world where darkness lurks around every corner. From the chilling descriptions of the crime scenes to the complex psychology of the characters, "Hiding Lies" pulls no punches in its exploration of the human psyche and the depths of depravity.

What sets this novel apart is its compelling protagonist, Lydia Walker. As she navigates the murky waters of justice and morality, Lydia grapples with her own inner turmoil, torn between her desire for truth and the darker urges that threaten to consume her. Her journey is both captivating and deeply unsettling, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.

The praise from fellow authors is well-deserved. CJ Leede aptly describes the novel as "brutal, unrelenting, and pitch-black," while Clay McLeod Chapman warns readers to "tread carefully" through its pages, as the darkness within "stains their fingers, their eyes, their very soul." Brian McAuley's comparison to a thrilling episode of "Hannibal" is spot-on, as "Hiding Lies" delivers a visceral and unforgettable reading experience that lingers long after the final page is turned.

Overall, "Hiding Lies" is a masterfully crafted debut that will leave readers clamoring for more from Stephanie Rose. With its chilling atmosphere, complex characters, and relentless suspense, this is a novel that demands to be read with the lights on and the doors locked. Highly recommended for fans of dark psychological thrillers, "Hiding Lies" is sure to leave you questioning the true nature of justice and the depths of human darkness.

Camping has become unsafe for tourists as a murderer is on the loose. The police and the FBI are on the hunt for the killer, but the search is proving difficult as they have yet to identify a clear pattern and his signature to catch him.

Lydia is a forensic photographer who loves all things true crime, Adam is a book dealer and lover. Both live in Portland and their paths are about to cross in a unique way.

Is Lydia ready for this encounter? Can Adam finally be free and act as he desires?

This was an extraordinary reading experience. The book is written from two perspectives. We have the female main character, Lydia Walker, and on the other side, the male main character, Adam Collins.

As different as the two are, they are connected by much more than one might initially suspect.

For me, the book was a celebration of being weird and/or different. At some points, the two main characters' behaviours felt as if the author wanted to show us, that every form of existence and ‘behaviour’ is essentially ‘right’… even if it results in deaths.
After all, strictly speaking… aren’t these killings just collateral damage to balance out the world?
And regardless of whether one is morally right or not… isn’t morality sometimes a matter of perspective? Aren’t there gray areas in how one can interpret ‘morally right’?

A note on the side characters like Detective Frank Morris, FBI Agents Michael Harshaw and Jonathan Yates, as well as Heather Carlson and her son Jacob… they fell a bit flat for me personally, but it wasn’t too bad while reading the book.
Also the depth of both Lydia and Adam made up for that!

This book was a mix of thriller and love story, and this blend worked quite well for me, to be honest.

7.8 out of 10 for this quick read.

Reminded me of Dexter in a good way. I felt for both of the main characters and was invested in their respective journeys. I enjoyed the ending, but I would have liked to experience one more twist. Only one small critique: The first couple he kills he states they went to University of Ohio. I know its fiction, but no college exists. There is Ohio University (where I went, Go Bobcats) and Ohio State University.

Thanks NetGalley! This book was amazing. I really loved the connection between the two main characters. It was a fast paced read that I could not put down

This was an enjoyable and fast read. It had a good thrill to the storyline and was well written. There was a good backstory to the characters that helped explain who they are as adults. Criminal vs the law! Towards the end, it was a little predictable on where the story was heading, but still exciting to read.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC copy of this great book!

This book reads like a Criminal Minds episode. If you’re into the crime genre of tv, Hiding Lies is absolutely for you.

I should have read the synopsis for this book a bit better because I was absolutely not expecting a full blown romance. While I liked that aspect somewhat, it was very insta-love.

The book was very well written overall. The ending felt very rushed & can be hit or miss depending on the reader. Unfortunately for me it was a miss.

Ultimately, this book was a good one which is why I gave it 4 stars! Even though I would have liked a different ending, I do think a lot of people will like it.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC copy!

A bloody good book!

Lydia is a forensic photographer with a traumatic past. While working on a current case involving the murders of a couple who were camping, she meets Adam. She feels a connection with him and enjoys the time they spend together. This is new for her, it's new for Adam as well.

As more bodies are found, it is obvious that a serial killer is at work. Lydia is there to take the pictures and Adam will be there for Lydia when she needs him.

Coming in at 240 pages, Hiding Lies was an enjoyable, dark, and thrilling read. I was fully immersed in the plot, the hunt, the romance, and the characters. This proved to be a very fast read as I did not want to put the book down. I enjoyed getting into the head of the killer as well as in Lydia's head as well.

Take a stab out of this book if you dare! Fans of Dexter will enjoy this book.

*Just know that this book touches on some dark issues.
Gripping, dark, and hard to put down!

Full of twists and turns, this book kept me guessing right until the very end. I really appreciate when a novel hooks my attention right from the beginning and that was certainly the case with this one! I loved the in-depth perspective of the mind of a serial killer and enjoyed the dual perspective of both Lydia and Adam. I will certainly be looking for more of this authors work!

Wow, this is a short, grim, and violent little gem. It’s hard to talk too much about it without spoiling anything but it looks at serial killers in a very different way than many people are used to, and the results are pretty damn awesome.

Whew, what a twisted story this is! It's a love story, deep down. But it's a love story between a forensic photographer and a serial killer. One is working a string of brutal murders that the other has committed.

Throughout this twisty turny novel, we get to hear from both perspectives. And being inside the mind of a serial killer is terrifying. He's friendly, charming, helpful... right up until he decides you're not worthy to be alive.

Our protagonist has a dark vicious background as well. There's something within her that makes her sympathize with killers and murderers. She's not completely innocent herself despite working for the police.

Through a series of events, these two will meet, unaware of what secrets the other holds, and when those secrets are revealed... well, you'll have to read to find out!

This novel has a nice brisk pacing that keeps the narrative moving along while also giving readers the chance to know the characters. And who doesn't like a good book about a terrifying serial killer? 😁

I highly recommend it and want to thank Joey Powell for the ARC. But this review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.

Hiding lies

This book was a twisted thriller/horror for sure. Take the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book seriously before reading!!!

This is a dark book Vibes of criminal minds, silence of the lambs, Dexter, sharp objects, and the butterfly garden. This book is completely unhinged.

The main protagonist is a forensic photographer. I enjoyed this fact as so many books only follow police or fbi but a photographer in that line of work was an interesting change of pace.
From a personal taste in books I’d rate it a 3 there were definitely some gruesome parts to much for me but as an over all story it was well written I’d give it a 4.5.

Rollercoaster of a book. I didn';t want to miss anything so I read the book from beginning to end quickly. The end was mind blowing, did not expect her to join him in killing as well.

Lydia, a forensic photographer, is assigned a case where a couple was murdered during a camping trip. As more victims turn up she finds that she has a personal connection to the case, which makes her even more determined to figure it out. I love a good thriller and this one definitely hit the mark. The twists and turns the story takes and the writing style kept me immersed in the story from beginning to end and I loved every minute of it. Would recommend to anyone looking for a good murder mystery!

A uniquely dark and gritty read. This one blurs some serious lines until you don’t even know right from wrong.
So creative and well written. Unusual characters that make this a different read from most books. And it works! It’s dark and creepy and shocking with every page you flip.
It twists and winds it’s was through a most horrific serial killer with some awful shocking kills.
It’s brutal and nightmare inducing
And then…. And then…. The plot still twists… till the last page

Lydia, a forensic photographer with a difficult past, meets Adam while investigating camping murders. Their connection is new and unexpected.

As more bodies surface, a serial killer is revealed. Lydia takes photos, and Adam supports her.

With 240 pages, "Hiding Lies" is a gripping and fast-paced read. The story kept me hooked with its suspense, romance, and characters. It was hard to stop reading. Exploring the killer's thoughts and Lydia's perspective added depth.

Fans of "Dexter" will enjoy this book.

Note: The book covers some heavy topics. Details can be found in the comments section.

Rating: 4 stars!

I cannot stop thinking about this book.. Its INCREDIBLY graphic in its depictions of crime scenes and the minds of a serial killer, so if that ain't you thing, I suggest skipping this read. The story is dual POV between a serial killer and a crime scene photographer. The back and forth between the mind of the killer and the mind of the person trying to get in the mind of a killer... Incredibly original.

As their worlds come closer to colliding, we begin to understand that they each hold traumas from their past and how they deal with them will ultimately decide their futures. Stephanie Rose's Hiding Lies is a dark and twisted horror that would put authors such as Clive Barker, Ramsey Campbell, and Ray Bradbury to shame with it's gruesomeness. The details of this book would be more in line of a Stephen King book, but the absolute mind games and depravity make Ms. Rose's Hiding Lies a deliciously dark and morbid mind twist that will be sure to keep you up at night.

I really enjoyed this very unique debut novel by Stephanie Rose! It's an engaging, quick read with a few heart-pounding moments! I enjoyed getting both points of view in this, those from Lydia the forensic photog and from the killer! This will be a great read for true crime fans (although this is fiction), or fans of Silence of the Lambs, Samantha Downing or Gillian Flynn! It is a bit dark and gory so be fair-warned going in. This will be a great fall read when released in October!! You could mark this one down as a dark romantic horror. Thank you NetGalley and Mad Axe Media for this ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley, Stephanie Rose and Mad Max
Media for the ARC of Hiding Lies.

This book started with a plethora of trigger warnings, a few of which gave me pause…but I’m so glad that I decided to forge ahead with this one. Yes, there were very triggering subjects and vivid depictions. However, they gave the characters such interesting backstories and made you realize why they are the way they are.

The POV shifts between crime scene photographer Lydia and the murder she’s investigating, Adam. Lydia has a dark past in the foster care system which has made her detached and interested in the more morbid things in life. Adam also had a rough childhood, but he has gone down a darker path in life. The two have a meet cute and it the story finds a touch of romance.

This one reminds me a bit of Dexter. It was a fascinating read and I was hooked on the storyline, regardless of the darker moments. Please read the trigger warnings before proceeding

This dual POV story is not for the squeamish. There is no settling in period, the reader is thrown into the world of blood, bodies and harrowing back stories. The story is told from the POV of Lydia & Adam, and their love of true crime, and committing crimes.

It was a quick, easy, and witty read despite the heavy subjects that the story deals with. I feel like the author was trying to bring a lightness to the trauma, to balance the darkness and pits of humanity with these 2 interesting, unique characters.

The introduction is intense, captivating and will have you thinking ’WTF am I reading and why don’t I want to put it down?’. The reader is thrown into the deep end of the traumatised mind of Lydia. Lydia thinks about death all the time; her own & others, and situations in which both can happen. She’s a forensic photographer and a TA in a forensic science program because she wants to be surrounded by sociopaths and their work. She feels sorry for the victims, but she respects the work the killer has put in. Her job is the closest she can get to walking in the footsteps of a killer. She thinks the murderer is an artist and the victim is how they express themselves. Twisted enough for you yet? Keep going.

We are then introduced to Adam, the Romeo to this twisted love story. His childhood was rough, and his life experiences have made him into the person he is today; strong minded, vengeful and, in his opinion, just. He hates liars and he’s a firm believer in the truth setting you free, even if his take on it is warped.

There are numerous trigger warnings that go with this book, but I often find that trigger warnings can give away some of the storyline so if you’re planning on reading this, be prepared for a few wincing moments! Also, maggots have always freaked me out, and this book did not help the situation. If you’re still reading this and haven’t thought ‘no, no, definitely not’ then give this book a read and see if your stomach & mind are strong and twisted enough.

Stephane Rose's debut was very good. It was a bit darker and more gory than I normally like and there were trigger warnings at the beginning which is appreciated. Overall I would recommend this book but make sure you go into it knowing it is gory and read the trigger warnings first.

Oh my days…. This was the craziest book I have read in a long time but I really enjoyed it. Crazy as in really good on how a persons mind work just to get revenge on others due to their own past traumatic history and the thrill they get out of it when savagely killing others. It was like no other story I have read!

It’s a must read for people who like mystery or thriller books. I gave it 4 stars originally but now I am remembering it again and writing this, changed it to 5 stars. I wish that the book could have continued and would love to know what happens next - cliffhanger!

Wow. I really enjoyed this book. I was lucky enough to read an ARC copy but this is my honest review and would be my review regardless of if it was an ARC or not. The book follows the two main characters Lydia and Adam. Hiding Lies really surprised me with the depth to the characters and the ability to discover about their past histories, to what made them who they are today. I made so many notes whilst ready this book. I really enjoyed the psychological elements and trying to see things from their point of view and logic. I loved their love for books as well and completely agree with them. I highly recommend reading this book

I just finished Hiding Lies by Stephanie Rose and my first thought was “good gosh I really liked that.” This book is a fast paced thriller that made me feel all kinds of things. One minute I’m curious and trying to guess what is going to happen. The next, I’m creeped out by what is happening. Then I find myself almost crying from the emotions that Lydia is going through. I’m left feeling like I’m rooting for Lydia and the life she’s found but yet wondering if I should feel that way. This book is fantastic. I’m so thankful to NetGalley, Stephanie Rose and Mad Axe Media for giving me the opportunity to read the arc.

I wasn't sure what to expect with Hiding Lies by Stephanie Rose, but I was pleasantly surprised. The story was well-written and cohesive in how the story unfolded. I can't say that I was fully connecting with the characters, but I liked them well enough and found myself invested in the outcome of the mystery. I also liked that there were some references to Silence of the Lambs, which is a story that I genuinely enjoy as well. Also, it seemed like the story ended on a cliffhanger

A special thanks to NetGalley for this free electronic ARC. As twisted as this book is, I really enjoyed it. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I started this book, but the cover and the occupation of the main character, forensic photographer, really drew me in without knowing much else about the story.

This book was extremely enthralling and kept me unable to put it down. Finished it in about 4.5 hours. It really boils down to a romance between a forensic photographer and the serial killer she is helping to hunt down. I liked the alternating perspectives throughout and enjoyed what it added to the story. I think it would have been boring without Adam’s perspective as well. I would 100% recommend this to other thriller/crime lovers.

I am hoping there is more to come for Lydia and Adam’s story because I would definitely read that!

Thank you Netgalley, Mad Axe Media, and Stephanie Rose for an ARC eBook of Hiding Lies in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Ok, so ...

I just recently watched the movie Longlegs and I definitely felt similar vibes in the first half of the book ... minus all the satanic devil-doll stuff.

After reading Hiding Lies, I don't think I'll be camping anytime soon.

Really great pacing. Loved the visceral writing style, and really enjoyed where the book ended up. This is a fun, fast read. Stephanie Rose has written a great debut here.

The way the protagonist and the antagonist, both very traumatized individuals, view things and how they choose to channel their trauma, makes for a fascinating character study on how our painful experiences can leave behind ... stains; how those stains manifest differently for us ... Also how trauma bonding can go south real quick. The two main POV's are very interesting.

With flavorings of 'The Silence of the Lambs', mixed with 'You' and a hint of 'Maeve Fly' vibes, I found this to be a very entertaining read.

Will be recommending!

Thanks to Mad Axe Media and NetGalley for an advanced copy. This was a crazy story! Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more twisted… It’s dark, gripping and gruesome and I couldn’t put it down. I’d recommend checking the trigger warnings for this one if you do decide to pick it up.

An unusual book to review. Understanding what motivated the two protagonists rather than liking them is how I approached this.
It is certainly an interesting novel and well written. It is also disturbing on a variety of levels.
I certainly reccomend it as a read and also as a book club candidate as it would most definitely divide opinions.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publishers for this advance review copy.

The story is a fast-paced, dark, and twisted tale that I couldn't put down. I finished the book in just over a day. Being inside the mind of a serial killer and empathizing with them was interesting. This would be perfect for fans of Dexter. Lydia and Adam have sad beginnings, and it was easy to understand their way of thinking even if you don't agree with all of it. I enjoyed the added romance between these two.

I did have a few concerns about the plausibility of certain plot details, which at times seemed too easy and unrealistic, but this did not take away from my enjoyment. This gripping story ends on a cliffhanger which left me wanting more! I look forward to seeing more from this author.

Thank you, NetGalley, Mad Axe Media, and Stephanie Rose for this ARC ebook in exchange for my honest review.

If you are looking for a tense and entertainingly dark story for your autumn tbr, this is one to watch out for.

At just over 200 pages, I did find myself constantly wondering how they were going to fit the whole story in. But the pacing is quick, and this just adds to the excitement!

Told in a dual POV format, we have forensic photographer Lydia Walker who is brought on to a potential serial case. Lydia is hiding a traumatic and slightly dark past and cannot help but resonate with the killer as more bodies are found.

And then we have Adam, who Lydia meets and connects with almost instantly. Who unfortunately also had a horrible upbringing.

As the cases escalate, Lydia finds herself torn between doing the right thing and giving in to her dark thoughts.

Now, the way this ended blew me away. I’ve never read a book end the way it did, and it made me feel 10 different emotions all at once 🤯

I can’t wait to see what comes next from Stephanie!✨

I admire the author's ability to, so thoroughly describe violent events, it actually turned my stomach, which is impressive. A reader has to be in the correct mindset to enjoy it and I did enjoy it. I could see where the story was going but I did like the twists. All in all a successful thriller.

Lydia is a forensic photographer with a tragic past, she also has a secret, she's obsessed with crime and duplicates her photographs to study the crimes committed in her own time.
A gruesome find at a local but remote camping site has Lydia called upon for her services and expertise.
Adam works part time in a book store, he's also fascinated by crime.
I found this a really enticing read, although the book was gruesome in places( there are plenty of trigger warnings at the beginning)
I liked reading the point of view from the killer, and the procedural side of police work. Reading the case notes made it seem like a true crime novel
It's a very strong debut novel

This was a fairly fast-paced thriller, following Lydia, a forensic photographer, as she takes on her biggest case yet. A couple have been found brutally murdered at their campsite, photographed, and staged for the police to find. The killer has also left a message that Lydia seems to connect with.
I found the story, the characters, and their backstories interesting, and it certainly helped understand their thought processes and their actions. There were moments where I hoped I was wrong about what was going to happen, but it did. Because of that, I was incredibly angry at the way this book ended. More angry than I can put into words, which is why I marked it down.

Check the TWs for this one.

This is a great read with twists readers won't see coming. Lydia is complex and intriguing. The story is often dark and a bit disturbing and a complete page-turner! This is an author I will absolutely read again.

Prepare for a wild, twisty ride with Hiding Lies. It's like the perfect blend of Criminal Minds and Dexter in novel form. Forensic photographer Lydia Walker is about to tackle the biggest case of her career, and her sheer excitement is just a tad unsettling. And then she meets Adam in a bookstore – a connection so strong that it makes her giddy. But things take a dark turn as bodies start piling up, and the danger hits closer to home. With multiple points of view, this fast-paced horror novel had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. This one made me never want to go camping ever again.

If you want a spooky book then this is definitely one for you and definitely one to read in October, however the mystery just wasn’t there for me. I did enjoy this book despite this

This book was not like I expected it to be but that’s not a bad thing, I really enjoyed getting to know the two main characters Adam and Lydia and found the way the interacted to be beautifully dark. I feel with the ending it leaves this open for a sequel in the future but if not that’s fine too I do enjoy and open ending.

Lydia likes to read “The Silence of the Lambs”, is obsessed with books, hates liars and enjoys taking pictures. She was an abused foster child who turned into a forensic photographer, documenting crimes all over Portland. She admires the killers, decorating her apartment’s walls with gruesome crime scenes. She has a dark side, and doesn’t know what to do with it.

Adam likes to read “The Silence of the Lambs”, is obsessed with books, hates liars and enjoys taking pictures. He and his girlfriend have recently split up, and he has immersed himself with work, and other activities, like kayaking and camping. He has a dark side, and doesn’t know what to do with it.

When the two meet, sparks immediately fly. Lydia is in the middle of crazy things at work, as a potential serial killer seems to be getting started. They stab multiple people to death, then arrange their bodies in tender positions for the police to find. Lydia is getting stressed, especially when one of the cases hits home, but she can’t tell Adam about it, for multiple reasons. There are some things he can’t tell her, either. But maybe he’d like to try…

It’s rare to find good extreme horror on NetGalley, so I’m glad I was able to get this advanced reader copy! The writing was decent, and while the ending felt too abrupt, this story was a horrifying yet touching tale of two people finding each other…just with a lot of murder sprinkled in! 3.5 stars, rounded up for being a debut.

(Thank you to Mad Axe Media, Stephanie Rose
And NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on October 29, 2024.)

This twisty little tale will leave you a little shocked and horrified at the same time. There are considerable things to be warned about this book as it deals with various forms of abuse and death, including children and animals. There is a nice content warning in the beginning, so the reader is fully aware of the content going in.

Lydia is a crime scene photographer, and when she is assigned to a particularly gruesome case, she becomes obsessed with the work of serial killer, Adam.

This novel is told through alternating POVs, which allows you to get into both Lydia and Adam's minds. It's such a treat to the reader to have the story slowly revealed like this, The cat and mouse aspect of the story will keep you on the edge of your seat and you will find it impossible to put this book down.

It's such a great, quick thriller read.

I could not put this book down. The first chapter is literally perfect—sets us up with backstory, and tone, and then drops us headfirst into the story. Lydia is a forensic photographer for the Portland Police Bureau with a dark history full of abuse in foster homes.

Most of the story is told between this cat-and-mouse POV swap which is reminiscent of a contemporary romance. It works!

I wasn’t expecting to ugly face cry but the scene sneaks up on you—even though you know it’s coming—and bam! emotions! Definitely don’t want to spoil anything, just know youll be questioning your own morals before finishing.

Lydia Walker is a forensic photographer, trudging through life in the shadow of her traumatic past, when she is assigned a case centered around the gruesome murder of a camping couple. Her personal life begins to improve after a chance encounter that makes her feel like she's finally connected with someone, a fellow tortured soul named Adam.

A very well-crafted horror/thriller novel. I enjoyed the tension very much.

This book is good, really good but had the potential to deliver so much more. It is a tense, twisted read with trigger warnings - child and animal death. (Not graphic description)

Lydia is a forensic photographer and Adam is a serial killer, this is the story of their relationship from strangers to much more, the killings are gruesome but Lydia cannot help admiring Adam’s work whilst she works the case. We delve into the minds of both the main characters, whilst learning about both of their pasts.

This was a fast paced read, thrilling and tense, but had so much more it could have offered. However definitely worth a read if you like serial killer books.

Many thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for my eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

I try to keep my October releases to the horror genre, as I love to take full advantage of spooky season. When I saw Hiding Lies, I initially thought I was breaking my rules by introducing a thriller - but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Although technically a crime thriller – Hiding Lies tiptoes the balance between horror and thriller in a delightful, if dark way.

Lydia is a crime scene photographer with a bit of a dark past – but when she is tasked with photographing a gruesome case where the killer leaves photographs that exposes their victims lies, she starts to become obsessed…

Hiding Lies alternates perspectives between crime scene photographer Lydia and serial killer Adam. Don’t worry – this isn’t a spoiler, it’s revealed very early on in the book. Although this is an unusual narrative technique, it means you really get inside the killer’s head and even start to perhaps empathise with him to a certain extent. Please look at the trigger warnings at the beginning of this book before starting it – it is incredibly dark throughout and there’s lots of difficult themes – it is not a light read!

As you know who the killer is, the book starts off as a bit of a cat-and-mouse thriller where you are waiting for the police to catch up with Adam. However, when Lydia and Adam’s paths cross it becomes something all together different! I would say that although I loved most of the book and was gripped throughout, the ending had me a little disappointed. Although I enjoyed the idea of the twist, it felt very abrupt and ruined the stakes that we felt we had been building up to throughout the novel. It was an unusual ending for sure though and I do commend author Stephanie Rose for that!

Overall, Hiding Lies is the perfect bridge between thriller and horror – it’s very dark but a gripping read. Thank you to NetGalley and Mad Axe Media for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

ARC review
Hiding Lies by Stephanie Rose
Release date: October 29, 2024

Lydia Walker is a forensic photographer with an obsession with all things true crime and horror. She’s thrilled to be assigned the case of what seems to be a serial killer, gruesomely murdering people at remote campsites.

She hides her obsession well, but she craves a companion who will understand. When she meets Adam, she’s hopeful he might. But Adam has a dark side of his own.

I devoured this gruesome, unique story. Both main characters have a darkness they are struggling to keep hidden, but when they find each other, they imagine a life where they don’t have to. Warning: The crime scenes in this story are truly chilling.
