Description
“I am three thousand,
four hundred and ten years old,” The Dragon told the man. “And for every single
night of every single year of those three thousand four hundred and ten years,
I've slept on my treasure. It’s how dragons sleep. It’s how dragons have always
slept.” And he closed his eyes with a snap.
Then he opened one eye cautiously.
“What’s a bed?”
Brave princesses, grumpy dragons, princes
competing for a kingdom, and children seeking answers to age-old questions.
These six modern fairy tales include stories for pleasant dreams, and stories
for stirring thought. They are just the right length for bedtime reading. Each
is a gem that will delight the entire family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories! June 17, 2013

These stories are
wonderful! They're written in a mature style that is true to the old-world
fairy tales I remember from my childhood. I tend to love anything these days
that takes you back to the values and virtues of the
pre-industrial/pre-high-tech world. I haven't read any tales in this style that
I liked for a very long time. The meanings embedded in them are terrifically
relevant for both children and adults. How many books do you read these days
that actually communicate the deepest values of community, honesty, and inner
resourcefulness without the clutter of modern language and references? I hope
this author has many more stories like these up her sleeve - they are simply
magical.

"In short, they were people like any other, and they were just about as happy as they chose to be." Perfect length, language, and themes for bedtime reading. Boys and girls are equal in a natural, unforced way. Each story has an uplifting moral or theme, without slapping you in the face with it. And none of the dragons are nasty creatures that terrorize towns or must be chased by weapon-wielding "heroes". I highly recommend for children (and even for adults who just love dragons).

I had the opportunity to read a preview edition
of this collection, and I'm happy to say that both my six-year-old daughter and
her ten-year-old brother enjoyed all six stories.
I enjoyed reading them to them because not only are they well-written, and
short enough to make for good school-night bed-time reading, but they are
generally happy stories with positive messages, without being sappy or preachy.
I realize a lot of people are into dark, anti-hero zombie dystopias at the
moment, but I think upbeat, happy-ending fairy tales are much needed, and
under-represented.
The language is accessible, without talking down to children, but not so
advanced that reading the stories feels like homework.
Some words may be too advanced for the younger readers to handle on their own,
but I think that's a good thing. Nothing wrong with a little vocabulary
building.
The stories range from cute and simple to more serious and thought provoking,
and it made a nice variety, sometime putting my daughter right to sleep,
sometime provoking questions and comments.
The blurb says "stories for pleasant dreams, and stories for stirring
thought."
I couldn't have put it better myself
