American Samoa

This is an informational text about the U.S. territory American Samoa. It is the perfect level for middle grade readers (upper elementary- middle school). The text includes chapters about the characteristics of the islands, including geography, flora, and fauna. It also includes chapters about the history of the island and how it came to be a U.S, territory. There is information about the inhabitants and culture as well.

The book includes short chapters with pictures and lots of facts. There is a glossary and an index at the end. There is also a timeline of important historical events. The structure is ideal for use as a research text and would be a great addition to elementary and middle school libraries.

I thought this book was really fun and informative. I’m not sure if a lot of people know much about American Samoa. My family is from Samoa and spent some time in American Samoa as well. I really enjoyed the pictures and I think the formatting makes it easier for kids and teens to learn about American Samoa. There were a couple culture things that I’m not sure were completely accurate. It said Samoans are part of a patriarchal culture, but in my personal experience, it’s deeply matriarchal. The women in my family run the household. Men are taught to be respectful of women. Many of the men do the cooking and providing. At least that’s how it is in my family. But overall, I think it was mostly factual. It’s a beautiful culture and should be shared more!

I didn't know much about the Amercan Samoa and it's geological fascinating. Great educational book

I love American Samoa by Danielle Haynes! American Samoa, I believe, is geared toward young kids ages 8-12. American Samoa teaches kids the basics of the American Samoa culture. I love learning about the culture of American Samoa and learning new facts. I think it would be a great resource to use for a school project about American Samoa. I highly recommend American Samoa by Danielle Haynes! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.

I'm not going to lie, the main reason I wanted to read this is because of the gorgeous pictures. But I'm glad I saw this because American Samoa is a place I never knew anything about beyond seeing it in the news every now and then. This territory has such interesting history and culture, with such much beauty and even potentially active volcanoes. I highly recommend this for all young kids to learn about this area in a way that is fun and easy to understand. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this.

I loved the photographs in this book! I know so many people from American Samoa and it was wonderful to have pictures to go with the stories they have told me.
