Description
Nine Bucks and Change seamlessly picks up the story of Sara Mae and Sheila as they are thrown into a tangled web of events that tosses them into unexpected and uncharted territories. A plethora of folks – friends, family, and strangers, alike – enter into and exit their lives just when they least expect it, and the ramifications of those interactions leave all of them pondering the very essence of change and its fickle impact. Nine Bucks and Change also reminds the reader that one’s ability to choose, to respond, or even to reject life’s contradictions, is indeed, a gift.

Fantastic sequel to "Big House Dreams". The depth this author gives her characters is wonderful. This story about two strong women leaves you wanting the book to continue. I can't wait to read the next book by Judith Dechesere-Boyle.Comment
A wonderful story of family support, growth and challenges. Great insight to the southern culture!

I loved the depths of the human condition that Nine Bucks and Change reaches. While this story stands alone, it is a fantastic follow up to Big House Dreams, where I first met Sheila Jenkins, a bright, strong, yet vulnerable young woman. Written in the southern vernacular and set in Nashville, Tennessee, Nine Bucks brought me into the story of folks whose lives change with the ebb and flow of consequences of their own actions as well as those actions imposed upon them by characters with foul intentions. I highly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys getting to know a variety of characters, following events that are often unpredictable and who appreciates the paradoxes that life presents!
Tantalizing, realistic, very well written sequel to Big House Dreams

Nine Bucks and Change continues the saga of the Jenkins women through the next generation. Rooted in real-life and believable experiences, this poignant tale immerses the reader in her or his own emotional identification with one or more of the characters. Recommended for insightful and sensitive readers from mid-teens to old age.
interesting story...great characterizations

This is the first book I've read by this author and it was captivating. As a professional social worker with a wide range of experience, I found this book was both readable and realistic in terms of personality/character development . There are a number of sub-stories with intertwining characters against the background of rural Nashville, TN. Most of the conversation was written in the dialect of the region. In the initial sub-story there were some too gritty (for me) descriptions of crimes committed. So in these few parts I got the gist without reading every detail. The back stories of all of the major characters are fascinating... and right on target in terms of human development. The author is able to illustrate scenes beautifully for the mind's eye. I am looking forward to her next book!

This book is very hard to put down once you start reading it. Two strong women, Shelia and her mother Sara, experience great joy and also navigate through unexpected life-changing events. It's real life and how real people react to adversities, pull together, and lovingly support each other. It is interesting to see the characters evolve over the years. Some of them are on their way to reaching their potential and others succumb to their weaknesses. The author has an exceptional understanding of people, the good parts and the ugly parts. I look forward to her next book!
