Sixteen-year-old Ruben Odendaal knows little about romantic love. His whole life has unfolded within the bounds of the family farm, steeped in the shadows of painful racial tension and volatile politics. Then he meets Isabelle Hoffman, a girl with a universe of promise and possibility in her eyes, and suddenly, anything seems possible. But for all their deep yearning and devotion, Isabelle's mother has other plans, and their love is severed as quickly as it takes bloom.

Decades later, when fate conspires to bring Ruben back into Isabelle’s life, time has only exacerbated their differences. Isabelle is now married to an affluent businessman, while Ruben longs to leave Africa and find a new beginning elsewhere. Namibia has also changed, but violence simmers alongside hate and despair.
