Description
Nate is an adventurous teen athlete growing up in the 1970s who unexpectedly meets a beautiful girl. An initial first impression sparks conflict; however, neither can resist their strong attraction. They join in a romantic relationship, but all does not go smoothly because they are different than the typical young couple – Nate is white and his girlfriend is black. The uncommon adoring pair decides to hide their relationship from their parents. At school, they cope with the reactions of students who disapprove of them, including a school bully who goads Nate into a fight. The altercation escalates into a major legal battle that drags in a zealous district attorney, a charismatic defense lawyer, the ACLU, and hundreds of protesters. All the while, additional suspense builds as the San Francisco Bay Area community in which Nate lives fears that the Zodiac Killer is lurking in the vicinity, scouting for his next victim and a showdown between Nate and the mass murderer seems inevitable.
Through the struggles of dealing with the multifaceted problems and pressures in his life, Nate remains committed to excelling in the sport he loves most – track, and specifically the hurdle races. He also deals with a personal dilemma in regard to God. Nate consistently battles to come to grips with his faith and the role God plays in his life, and in the turbulent and seemingly unfair world of the 1970s. Dramatic events at the final important track meet provide many answers to Nate.

Life's Hurdles and the True Winner shows dedication, discipline, compassion, first-love, family values among other important subjects. This novel involves more than the title can describe. It gives the readers a little of the excitement of the Zodiac Killer's latest attempts, teenage conflicts, racial discrimination, and spiritual conflicts at a young age.
The narrative style is an excellent quality of this writer who guide us thru the last page with smooth literary transitions, to have the story turn into a great end.
Life's hurdles teaches us an important message; that regardless the meaning of victory, there are always most important rewards waiting for us.
I have not read a book like this, since I read Mark Twain.
5.0 out of 5 stars A clean book with a valuable life message, January 16, 2013

Steven S. Sharp's "Life's Hurdles & The True Winner" is the kind of novel I'd want my teenage to read: It's clean, there's a message, and he learns a little about what it was like to grow up in the mid-1970s when I was his age. Nate, a track star at his junior and high schools, navigates the usual timeless problems of teenage boys, but when he and a girl begin an interracial relationship, his troubles spiral far beyond his control or understanding. How he copes with it and the fallout of a bad decision proves to be difficult but ultimately heroic. If you have a teenage son, buy two copies - one for him and one for yourself - then read and talk about this book together. You'll both be inspired.

Life's Hurdles & The True Winner is about a thoughtful young man, Nate, who is dealing with young mens coming to age issues while trying to figure out his personal concept of God and if God really affects his life on a personal basis. He ends up dealing with some cultural issues in high school with his girlfriend Mary, who has a very strong personal relationship with God which influences his internal process of how God works in his life. A very thought provoking book - one that I enjoyed both as a parent of two boys and as a person who has walked that same journey of asking how does God affects me personally. I highly recommend this book.
This would be a great church youth group discussion book since it covers cultural differences, questions of honor and choices a young person deals with in their peer groups and home lifeLife's Hurdles & The True Winner.

An incredibly passionate story of young love blossoming amidst the throngs of society's ugliness. This story is beautiful - you smile and laugh as you remember how some of the events might parallel your own young life. You get angry, you cry and find yourself wanting to scream at times. However, the conclusion gives you joy, leaves you with hope and message of life's lessons, faith and love. Your emotions will truly get a workout. Steven S. Sharp is an extremely gifted writer. I look forward to his next novel.

In LIFE'S HURDLES & THE TRUE WINNER, high school track athlete Nate is trying to focus his attention on competing in the hurdles when he meets Mary one day and an initial conflict gradually turns to romance. As good as the couple gets along with each other, not everything runs smoothly for them because Nate is white and Mary is black. It's the 1970s and not everyone approves of their relationship. Nate must deal with confrontations from an aggressive bully at school, which then leads to legal complications involving the ACLU and civil rights issues. While the characters are teenagers and this could be classified as a young adult or "coming of age" novel, older readers (like me) who can remember the 1970s as a time of tumultuous political change, will enjoy the way the novel evokes that time period. It's a well-written novel. As you finish each chapter, you feel you need to keep reading to find out what happens next.
