Calves In The Mud Room is about one pivotal night and day in the life of teenager Wade Summers.

It’s set among the fringe along Front Range of the Rockies. It’s a place in transition--a farm community dying to the banalities of growth.

Wade has never been to a dance before. Tonight’s his first. And he has a date with high school hottie Glory Schoonover, who actually asked him to the Valentine’s Day tolo.

A fierce February blizzard has blown in and a couple of first-time heifers are calving early. Way too early. And on tonight of all nights.

Wade’s never delivered a calf on his own before either.

His grandfather was always there to show him the way. But with him gone and his mom and step dad busy with their own booze-fueled train wrecks, Wade is left to confront bringing new life in the world by himself.

And hopefully still make it to the dance with Glory.

Before the night is out (and after the usual skirmishes with his parents)
Wade discovers his grandfather’s will. That knowledge ,coupled with a climatic revelation the next day, jars Wade into his own place of transition
and growth.
