Tara Jean Dobbs has left her home and profession because she feels as if she let herself and her friends down. When her new friend Andrea joins a cult and then disappears, Tara decides to put her police training to use and joins up herself to find out what happened.

When Tara loses touch with her friends from home, Jake Nolan volunteers to find her. The trail leads to the Chosen and their narcissistic, sociopathic leader. At first, all Jake wants is to get Tara out. But then they discover that the cult leaders have invented a new drug, and they become determined to bring them all down. But those in charge shoot Jake and kidnap Tara, then cross the border into Mexico, where they imprison her with the intent of finding out how much she and Jake have uncovered and who they’ve told.
