Description
“A luminous fairy tale, sharp as teeth and full of heart.” —Rebecca Ross, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows
In this spellbinding sequel to Kathryn Purdie's bestselling dark fairy tale, Clara and Axel must return to the forest—and its monsters—if they have any hope of finally breaking the curse on their village.
Emerging from the shadows of the Forest Grimm, Clara and Axel return to their village, the one place they can be safe behind the forest's border. But when the woods begin luring villagers into the forest, it becomes clear that the darkness they battled was merely a whisper of the true horror lurking there.
Burdened by unsettling visions and bound by a love as perilous as the cursed woods that call to them, Clara and Axel must once again enter the forest to unearth the sinister secret at its heart. As they fight murderous woodsmen wielding riddles sharp as blades, spectral maidens who threaten to drag them into an eternal dance, and phantoms able to use the very essence of the forest against them, Clara and Axel realize the stakes are higher than ever. If they can’t break the curse once and for all, they may not have a home to return to…

This was a mesmerizing dive back into the eerie, enchanting world of the Forest Grimm! The imagery of spectral maidens and murderous woodsmen gives off that spine-tingling, gothic fairy tale vibe that’s both sharp and beautiful. The stakes are soaring higher, and the suspense is enough to have you on the edge of your seat. If you love dark tales with heart, this sequel promises to keep you captivated until the very last page.
My new favorite gothic fairytale! I grew up reading the stories collected by The Brothers Grimm and this reimagining combines them in the best way.
The story picks up right where The Forest Grimm leaves off with bone tingling suspense and a sentient forest bent on justice. I loved all the characters - from Clara’s and Axel’s internal and relationship struggles, to the dancing princesses, to the evil and misunderstood huntsman.
There’s so many secrets and plots to uncover and each twist and reveal kept me on the edge of my seat. This duology is perfect for lovers of dark fairytales and murder mysteries. Highly recommend!
Thank you to Netgalley, Wednesday Books, and St. Martin’s Press for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
What a ride! Clara and Axel are back in the forest trying to save their town from a curse. In this sequel, they must find a stolen page from the magical book the town uses for wishes. They also want to solve a murder and find still more missing townspeople who have gone into the magical forest.
I appreciate how deeply Kathryn Purdie dug into Grimm's fairy tales to come up with characters and challenges for our characters in this sequel. There were times when you just didn't know when Clara would be "done-done" with the trials. Even when she was home, it felt like her happily ever after was far from her grasp.
The angst between Clara and Axel was well done and I think it was refreshingly appropriate at time when some are pushing for YA literature to be more adult. They're young and inexperienced, but committed to each other for the long haul.
The Deathly Grimm, sequel to the Forest Grimm, did not disappoint! Clara and Axel finished their story in a tale that was every bit as exciting and nail-bitingly tense as the first book. This is definitely a series that will be going on our library shelves! The Forest Grimm is a cursed land filled with mixed-up, deadly fairy tales. The characters jump right out of the book and grab your heart. I laughed and cried my way through the book. Well done, Ms Purdie!
The Deathly Grimm is appropriate for middle grades on up. There are scenes of extreme peril, death and sweet romance.
This book is incredible. It took me less than 24 hours to absorb it and I’m so upset the story is over. Clara and Axel are so real and such great characters. Poor Ollie!
The way classic Grimm characters are rethought and woven into a brand new story - there are no words. Highly, highly recommended. You won’t be able to put it down!
The Deadly Grimm is like a long winded Grimm Fairy tale for the older reader. I'm a huge fan of Grimm Fairy Tales and love dark fairy tales so I couldn't wait to read the final book in the duology. I should have reread book 1 but I still enjoyed it. I will be getting book 2 when I come out and do a reread for my blog. I absolutely love this cover so much! Glad they went with this design over one similar to The Forest Grimm.
I really enjoyed this Brothers Grimm remake, it was a fun, dark way to tell the stories. I will definitely share it in our store with our readers.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc!
This series is the first fairytale retelling of sorts that I’ve actually liked! The sequel holds up to the first book and completes a great story arc full of twists and turns and darkness.
Another treck through the Grimm Forest, count me in! I absolutely love the way the classic tales are twisted to curse individuals in the town. Creepy and enchanting.
Big thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for the chance to review this book pre-release. Omg this was SUCH a beautiful follow up to The Forest Grimm. It was dark, atmospheric, and honestly fit perfect as a mid-fall early-winter read. I loved that we got to pick right back up from where we left off and introduce our characters to more creatures and tales, some which I wasn't even familiar with myself! This was a great conclusion to the duology, and I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy!
A fantastic conclusion to the story of The Forest Grimm. This narrative incorporates elements from Grimm's Fairy Tales with interesting twists and explanations of their origin, while in no way contradicting the historical tales. Clara's visions introduced details of events that would not have been able to be woven into the story otherwise, as they involved points of view from characters central to the story but not active participants. The author expertly portrayed Clara's and Axel's emotions as they traversed the magical forest and as Clara came into her powers. So many strands of the tale are inventive and memorable, but I cannot list them without spoiling the conclusion. The research put into this fantastical novel is evident and much appreciated. There is nothing about this book, or the series, that I didn't find exciting and entertaining - honestly, once I started the book, I didn't want to put it down!
I enjoyed this so much! I adore all things Grimm's fairytales or any type of retelling. The characters were well fleshed out and I really liked the tension, the adventure, and the uncertainty that was weaved throughout the entire story. There were some questions I had as I was reading. I wanted a bit more on the mother of Clara which we did get throughout the story. This book was stunning and I will be recommending this one to my library when it is finally published. Thank you for letting me read it.
I didn't realize that this was the second book in a series. But I think there was enough information given that you can read this as a standalone. It gave me the movie "The Village" mixed with the Grimm fairytales. This was a pretty interesting book, and I enjoyed it a lot.
A great read that I really enjoyed. It had action, romance, and twist and turns that kept me engaged from beginning to end. I loved how Grimms fairytales were woven into the plot. It was the perfect conclusion to the story.
First, this cover is a million times better than the first book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, there was an adventure, romance, and danger. It was a perfect ending.
I loved this book. I loved seeing these characters again and seeing them back in the forest. I really liked the twisted fairytales that we see in this one. They were just so cool and so messed up. I loved this story and the concept so much. I thought the ending was fantastic and it was a great way to bring everything to a conclusion while also not making it a perfect happily ever after.
I enjoyed this conclusion to The Forest Grimm duology.
Clara and Axel must enter the Forest again to break the curse.
What I really love about this duology is the way that Purdie blends all different fairy tale elements into this twisted Forest.
Action packed, and with a sense of urgency, I didn't want to put this one down.
Clever ending that I didn't predict.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an early copy for review.
