What a treat!
Fun! Whimsical! Magick-Al! And…revolves around three women who are in their 40’s…so, not a teen drama.
And…a big white dog!
Luella is the MFC. She has been working at a sunscreen company…forever…as their online manager/presence. One day she heads in to work and is FIRED!
How is that even possible? They love her!
No explanation. No discussion. Just pack up and leave.
Meanwhile, her only child has just head off to college.
How is she going to do this?
As she’s packing up her office, a big white, silver, fluffy dog 🐩 appears…
TO HER.
Can anyone else even see it? She must be losing her mind.
And the wind 💨 ….in the office! What the heck??
Along the way we meet her BFF’s…Rose and Pepper. As well as her Mom.
And, the guy she was supposed to go to her HS prom with…well, he’s now an artist in the area! 😮
We coast along as Luella ‘finds’ who she is and what she is capable of!
And I’m leaving it at that!!
First book in the series, and I can’t wait to continue reading!
Lots of fun interspersed with the unusual and paranormal.
Thanks so much to #NetGalley, #FortunellaPress and #VictoryEditing for an ARC of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
By all accounts, this looks like it was released in 2020? So not sure, maybe the audiobook is just being released? In any case, if it appeals to you, take a look for it now!

I really enjoyed the audiobook! It is a cute, witchy read! I would definitely buy this book! Perfect for the fall season coming up!
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the advance audiobook!
This is a light, slower paced paranormal novel with characters that are middle aged. Empty nester Luella is the central character and we are taken along with her and her friends after strange occurrences begin happening after the sudden, unexplained loss of Luella’s job.
Overall I enjoyed the narration, the wide age representation, and the incorporation of animals thru the novel. It is definitely a set up for sequel stories, as many strings are left loose and not everything is explained. Read this if you want a contemporary paranormal, low stakes, second life story with no spice.
I was given a copy by the publisher via NetGalley (thank you!) and all opinions are my own.
If you've read cozy fantasy or cozy romantic fantasy and thought "This is too cozy, nothing happens", then I'd highly recommend this to you. This is cozy enough to have you smiling and enjoying your quiet time with it but also has just enough mystery and suspense to keep you coming back to it.
The romance is a subplot to the mystery and fantasy aspects and strikes a nice balance. The characters were relatable and felt like real individuals. Their decisions, inner monologues, and dialogue were all authentic and never left you thinking they felt like caricatures of real people.
And bonus points to a social media manager character who uses true strategy and concepts, and doesn't just take a photo, slap a filter on it, and get 8000 new followers overnight!
The digital copy of this book has been on my TBR for some time, having gotten it in a Stuff Your Kindle Day. But when I saw the audiobook available on NetGalley, I immediately requested it. And I am so happy that I did, the audiobook was fantastic. Character voices were excellent and overall it was very immersive. When the character said something into their hands, you could hear the narrator doing the same. Little things like this improve your immersion in the book, and I enjoyed every minute.
Thank you to NetGalley, Victory Editing, Fortunella Press, and Kate Moseman for an audiobook advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this cozy magical story. I loved the characters and their friendships. This was a super fun audiobook that I didn’t want to stop listening to. The narration was very good. I am excited that this is a series and look forward to see what’s in store for these magical friends.
Thank you to Fortunella Press, NetGalley, Kate Moseman, and narrator Xe Sands for the opportunity to review Silver Spells. This was a fun audiobook to listen to and I enjoyed it very much. Louella is having a rather interesting day when first she gets fired for no apparent reason. Trying hard to make sense of things she has to make a lot of decisions about her life and she finds out she has magical powers that she never knew about. If having powers wasn’t unusual enough she gains an invisible magical dog and wings. This is only the beginning of the fun facing Louella and her friends. They are all in for the ride of their lives. I absolutely loved this book and adored the writing style of the author. Definitely want to read more by Kate Moseman. If you’re a fan of Alice Hoffman or V.E.Scwab.
*Five Witchy Stars*
At no point did I have any idea what was going on. It wasn't a bad book, I just felt like I couldn't get a grasp on what was happening. I think it's on me though. Overall, I really did enjoy the book.
Luella works in a suntan lotion factory, she's good at her job and loves it. So imagine her alarm when she walks into work one day only to be fired and no one will tell her why. What this crap is she supposed to do now? She's got a daughter in college and an ex who is about to be out of commission for working. How the hell is she going to pay for her daughter's school? How the hell is she going to pay her own dang rent? On top of that all this weird stuff starts happening, An invisible dog, wings sprouting out of her back, just so much weird shit.
I think I'm going to have to continue this series, that ending was wild.
Thank you to NetGalley, Victory Editing, and the author for the opportunity to listen to and review this story. All thoughts are my own.
I enjoyed this fun second chance romance. The three friends were hilarious together. Suddenly finding out you have magic later in life would be crazy and chaotic, but these ladies took it with grace and dignity.
This was such a cute, cozy and whimsical read! I loved the witchy vibes and that the FMC was in her 40’s and not her teens! Definitely recommending this one to friends and family! Listened to it in one sitting!! 🪄
Thanks so much to NetGalley, Fortunella Press and Victory Editing for the ARC audiobook!
Silver Spells is a refreshing light fantasy read. A great fall read.
Luella is in a pickle. She just lost her job she’s had for decades and suddenly all these weird circumstances start popping up from an invisible dog to wings popping up on her back.
I love that the FMC is not 22 and has some life experience! Also all the characters feel very real and relatable. XE Sands did an excellent job on the narration for the audiobook.
4 stars
Midlife crisis? Maybe, but discovering you have unusual powers just as you are hitting a mid-life skid is probably not the time to discover them or maybe it is the perfect time to discover them! Hilarious audiobook that is just what is needed to brighten your day. Even better, the main characters are mature intelligent women used to taking on all the problems in their lives. Unfortunately, their problems just got a bit witchier! I am delighted that I found this audiobook as the narrator did an outstanding job of bringing the characters, the events and the twists and turns of this delightfully plotted story to life. This book definitely reads or in my case, listens like an intro into a longer series that promises much more to come and I am here for it!!! I can't wait to join in more antics with this "Ride or Die" bunch of friends. We all need friends like that and I can't wait to read more about them!
Simple, funny, and an enjoyable read! 5 stars because it had me laughing out loud at times. A great book to read if you're looking for something light and remotely relatable. I can't wait to read the rest of this series as the author completes them!
Silver Spells, the first in Kate Moseman’s Midlife Elementals series is a fun, cozy, quick ‘witchy vibe’ read. It follows Luella Campbell who has recently been fired from her job she has had for multiple decades which she thought she would have until retirementment.
So, she finds herself in her 40’s, no job, no daughter (she’s recently left for college), no boyfriend and to top it off weird stuff keeps happening. It’s fun, frothy and has a feel good vibe. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
One other point to applaud is Ms Moseman’s casual dropping in the story (while buying a dress) that our heroine is a size 16, ‘give or take’ - there was no big deal made of this but I would hazard a guess that not one female reader missed it. We are a sexy lot, us 16 plussers so thank you for just dropping it in and letting it land that we, who are heroine’s of our own stories are not necessarily a size 8 or in our 20’s.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing an advanced Audio copy, narrated by the most excellent Xe Sands, in exchange for an honest review.
Silver Spells - Kate Moseman
This book was so good!! When Luella gets fired from her job, she unleashes the magical powers that have laid dormant inside her. As she tries to get a handle on her magic and her life, she finally feels like she has stepped into her destiny.
The characters are excellent. The writing is good and I really enjoyed how much the book gave us in a short period of time. It was well paced, quirky and exactly what I needed. I am pumped to know it is book 1 in a series. Heck yeah! Magic… Banter and friendship. GIMME MORE!
4.5 stars
I love a witchy theme, and the newly growing genre of women finding their superpowers in midlife is so much fun. This is exactly the niche filled by Silver Spells. It's a fun novel where we're introduced to Luella, and her two best friends Rose and Pepper. Luella finds herself down on her luck, and the extra levels of stress she's experiencing seems to bring something magical out of her. I found the story instantly engaging and I look forward to reading more from Kate Moseman!
I loved this book! It was a quick weekend read with "older" characters and it was a delight. I look forward to seeing how this series develops.
This is such a cute, cozy whimsical book with a witchy vibe. Luella gets fired from her sunscreen job without a good reason. When a white and silver mythical dog goes throu her workplace, Luella gets her magical powers, and her 2 besties do too. But nobody is able to see these dogs and singin birds that Luella is seein plus lots of wind. Luella bakes when she is nervous and has an amazing best friends Rose and Pepper, Luella mom is a motorcycle mom, lol. Luella is in her forties divorced and single mom of a college girl, Lily. Luella goes to a new town, Sparkle Beach, and runs into an old high-school crush Raphael, a painter of the towns murals. I love how all 3 friends help each other with their powers to get better at them. This is a cute magical book that has some drama and a lil humor and some romance. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.
I was given a copy by the publisher via NetGalley (Thank U), and all my opinions are my own.
This was a cute read involving 40-something Luella, who swiftly loses her social media manager job with no apparent reasoning. Immediately after, she seems to have gained magical abilities out of the ether. At the heart of this is a close-knit group of friends trying to navigate life while coming to grips with the indescribable encounters surrounding Luella. Throw a possible second-chance romance into the mix, and now we've got some intrigue to add to our mystery.
I thought this was a nice story overall. I did find it somewhat farfetched that everyone so easily adapted to magic in their midst. There was also a lack of backstory that may have helped round the story out a bit better. I loved the fact that our main characters were more mature (Gen X for the win!) I listened to the audiobook version and think the narrator did a fantastic job.
At the end of the day, this was a lovely book to accompany me on my commute! Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing Co-Op for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts reflected in this review are honest and my own.
I truly didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It’s fluffy chick lit of the more enjoyable kind, well written and never cringe-worthy. The story starts when Louella suddenly is fired from her longstanding job with the Suntan Queen, a manufacturer of sunscreen in Sparkle Beach, Florida. As she shares the bad news with her best-friend coworkers, a sudden windstorm blows the door open and upends the plant's reception area while admitting a small dog—with shiny silver fur. Louella's bad day gets worse, but pretty soon magic starts manifesting around her.
The characters are warm Southern women with a good chunk of bite in their charm, the story is light and engaging, and the narrator speaks Southern without caricature. It’s not great literature, but it’s a fun read.
