Description

"Ambush is electric--the perfect blend of romance, suspense, and characters you swear are real . . . just one more proof of Coble at the top of her game." --Tosca Lee, New York Times bestselling author

The first book in the riveting new series from USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble, where a young woman will do anything to uncover the truth of her parents' murder--even work alongside the man who once broke her heart.

Paradise Alden's childhood in Nova Cambridge, Alabama, was idyllic until the night her parents were murdered. Since then, life has left her scarred. The abuse she suffered in the foster care system, her first love's betrayal, and the jaguar attack that nearly destroyed her career have led to an unshakable distrust--in men, in God, and maybe in even in herself.

After fifteen years, returning to her hometown is a last resort to finding her life again. She's hoping the wildlife refuge where she's accepted a veterinarian job will be the perfect place to heal from her recent traumas and unlock her memories about the night her parents died. But the day she arrives at The Sanctuary, a body is discovered on the grounds. And soon, a series of deadly events threatens not only her future, but the man who, despite all odds, still makes her pulse stutter. Arson, a shooting, a break-in, and multiple instances of animals being freed from their enclosures all point back to him, but Paradise knows Blake Lawson isn't responsible. Not the man who has been helping his mother manage The Sanctuary these past six months and care for his stepbrothers in the wake of their father's death . . . even if his betrayal years ago cost her everything.

Someone dangerous is lurking beneath the town's moss-draped trees, and Paradise refuses to let another murderer disappear into the shadows.

Colleen Coble's Ambush is just what her readers want--edge-of-your-seat suspense perfectly balanced with closed-door romance. The intricacies of a wild-animal sanctuary, sabotage, secrets that someone is willing to kill to keep hidden, and reconnecting with a first love make this a compelling story you won't want to miss. Perfect for fans of Allison Brennan and Dani Pettrey.

Also in The Sanctuary Series: Prowl (book #2, available November 2025) and Conspiracy (book #3; available July 2026).

Ambush by new to me author C. Coble, published by Thomas & Mercer is a thriller/ second chance romance/ christian literature; the first book in The Sanctuary Series.
A slow burn novel with an intriguing story and wonderful characters, 4.5 stars.

"Ambush" by Colleen Coble is an engaging romantic suspense novel set in Nova Cambridge, Alabama. The story follows Paradise Alden, a veterinarian who returns to her hometown after 15 years, hoping to heal from past traumas and uncover the truth about her parents' murder.

As Paradise begins work at a wildlife refuge called The Sanctuary, she encounters a series of dangerous events that threaten both her safety and that of Blake Lawson, a man from her past. Their complicated history adds depth to the story as they work together to unravel the mysteries surrounding them.

Coble's writing is clear and accessible, making the book easy to follow. The plot moves at a good pace, with enough twists to keep readers interested. The author does a good job of developing Paradise's character, showing her growth as she deals with her past and learns to trust again.

The small-town Southern setting provides an interesting backdrop for the story, and Coble's descriptions help bring it to life. While the romance between Paradise and Blake is an important part of the book, it doesn't overshadow the suspense elements.

Overall, "Ambush" is an enjoyable read for fans of romantic suspense. It offers a good balance of mystery, personal drama, and romance, making it a solid choice for readers who enjoy these elements in their fiction.

Wow, another 5 star book by Colleen Coble. Ambush is number 2 in her Sanctuary series and is a thriller second chance romance in Christian suspense. It has an intriguing storyline.. Paradise is a veterinarian that has accepted a job at a wildlife sanctuary. In her hometown of Nova Cambridge, Alabama. She left a scarred teenager of the foster care system amid a first love betrayal with her boyfriend Blake Lawson. She has returned home to try to heal from her trauma from a jaguar attack and to discover who murdered her parents. Paradise begins her job at the Sanctuary determined not to get involved in any relationshis again as she has a serious mistrust of people in general but especially men. Her very first day a dead body shows up on the Sanctuary grounds. Soon a series of deadly events begin happening, threatening herself and the boy who is now a heart stopping handsome man who is getting blamed for the events. Paradise knows better than to believe that Blake is harming anything at the Sanctuary when he left the Marines to help his mother run it and take care of his little brothers even if his betrayal years ago cost her everything. Together they join forces to investigate the mysteries surrounding them and the Sanctuary. Ambush has been a very enjoyable read from beginning to the cliffhanger ending. I can't wait for the next one!! I want to thank NetGalley and publishers Thomas Nelson for this advanced copy for my honest review.

Every time I read a Colleen Coble book I think this is her best work yet. And then another is released.

Paradise Alden’s story is amazing and you will cheer for her all the way through. Everything about this book is top notch. You won’t be able to put it down until you’ve finished the last word and then you’ll want to start over and read it again.

I was given an advanced reader’s copy from Thomas Nelson and Netgalley. Opinions are my own.

I’ve been a fan of Collen Coble and her books for years, and never hesitate to recommend her books. She has really hit it out of the park this time. Another winner!
Paradise Alden spent much of her childhood in Nova Cambridge, Alabama. It was a happy childhood until both of her parents were murdered and she ended up in an abusive foster care home. She left her hometown at age 15, and now 15 years later she is returning to work at the wildlife refuge as their veterinarian and with the hope of healing old wounds; some visible and some not so much. The owner of the animal shelter is the mother of her former boyfriend, Blake, who she unexpectedly finds is also living and working there.
Upon the day of her arrival, a woman is found dead on the property, that is only the beginning of a series of other unexplained, dangerous situations they find themselves in.
This is a captivating, fast-paced story that is a page-turner, from the very beginning. Colleen’s characters are always lovable and unforgettable, and that is very true in this heartfelt story. Whether you are an animal lover or not, you will find the vast number of animals to be a delightful addition to his heartwarming story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are my own.

The cover of this book is what caught my eye initially but the author's skillful storytelling had me eagerly flipping pages.

This is a fairly new to me author and honestly I can't wait to check out more from her in the future. I thought the storyline and characters were really interesting and her writing style has such a natural flow to it. I binged this book in a day because I had to know what happened.

If you enjoy reading books in the Romantic Suspense genre I would definitely check this one out!

Thank you Colleen Coble, Net Galley and Thomas Nelson for providing me with an ARC of this book!

Romance, murder, mystery , past secrets, memories good and bad!

This is the first book in a new series by this author.

Paradise has left town in not such a good way when she was 15, her parents had been murdered, she was really bad foster home, it didn’t get better after she left town.
She is back now with more memories, swirling around her head then she wants, who murdered her parents?

She takes a job at the animal sanctuary, where she worked when she was a teenager and what inspired her to become a veterinarian, unfortunately it is run by her ex-boyfriend Blake and his mother.

Paradise is all alone in the world. She has nobody, and no one in her corner when she arrives at the sanctuary she immediately is greeted by a dead body, a break in, fire, many secrets!

This book was fantastic, I can’t wait for more in this series!

Ambush was such a great book. I loved having the setting on a safari like animal sanctuary with exotic animals. It made for fun twists and turns. Colleen Coble is amazing at keeping you glued to the book with her character interaction and a story filled with mystery. I really enjoyed this one!

"Ambush" is a Christian romantic suspense. Paradise first lost her parents in an unsolved murder then was abused in foster care. She doesn't trust a God that allows things like that to happen to a child. During this story, she experienced God protecting a young child, and it touched her in a profound way. She started praying to God for help. Anyway, she's come back to try to solve her parent's murder, hoping it will bring her peace. She and Blake also worked to solve the murder and attacks threatening to undermine The Sanctuary since the detective had a huge grudge against Blake. They asked questions and tried to figure out who would gain from the attacks. I correctly suspected part of the answer, and both mysteries were resolved by the end of the book.

The main characters were likable and reacted realistically to events. The suspense came from the danger from the released animals and random attacks (which could have hurt anyone). Blake and Paradise had a long history of caring for each other, and both genuinely wanted to help and support the other. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this exciting novel.

What a thrilling start to a new series! Coble’s books never fail to instantly pull me in with their suspense, danger, great characters, and romance.

Ambush takes us back close to the Tupelo Grove area in Nova Cambridge, AL and the wildlife animal refuge, The Sanctuary, which has come under attack. Paradise Alden finds herself as the new vet at The Sanctuary after promising herself she would not return to Nova Cambridge after her parents brutal murder when she was a child that threw her into foster care and eventually sent her away as a teen as well as her first love, Blake Lawson, breaking her heart.

Blake Lawson left the marines to help his mom run The Sanctuary and raise his two younger brothers after his stepfather’s death. He is taken back when he sees Paradise arrive to take the job as the new vet. He isn’t sure his heart can take her being in his life again.

As the attacks and danger increase at the refuge, Paradise and Blake find themselves working together to keep the family and animals safe and get to the bottom of the situation. There are several different threats at play keeping the reader guessing which one is responsible for what is happening now.

I found this first book fascinating! I loved the wildlife refuge theme, getting to reconnect with characters from Coble’s previous series who make an appearance, and how it kept me guessing where and who the danger was coming from. It has me anxiously awaiting the next book to explore more of the mystery surrounding Paradise’s past. This book is a must read!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are completely my own.

Ambush starts strong and kept me glued to the pages. There are many questions, lots of twists, and plenty of suspense to keep the story moving. I enjoyed Paradise and Blake, and their renewed relationship; Jenna and the two younger boys were delightful. I also enjoyed catching up with characters from other books and visiting familiar settings. I am very much looking forward to returns to their area in future books!!

This is the first book in a new series by Colleen Coble.
I loved the storyline. What a neat name for the main character, Paradise, born in Hawaii.
I learned a lot about wild life preserves. Of there is a lot of controversy over that subject.
The other main characters are fun to get to know.
There is murder, mayhem, and mystery that keeps you turning the pages.

Ambush
You can go wrong with a Colleen Coble book and Ambush is no exception! This will grab you from the first page and keep you intrigued to the very end!

My thoughts - I've read every book written by Colleen Cable and this is my all time favourite. I love the strength of the two main characters Paradise Adin and Blake Lawson. You will see how Paradise is struggling with the past and Blake is there to support Paradise in overcoming all the obstacles. You'll see the strength they have for each others and others around them. It is a story I never wanted to end. It has compassion, love for the Lord, romance and mystery.

Disclaimer - I received this advanced readers copy from the publisher for a honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my and mine alone.

We meet Paradise, a veterinarian that specializes in exotic animals (lions, elephants etc). She returns to her hometown to be the onsite veterinarian for a wildlife sanctuary. She still has some scarring from her past. The owner of the sanctuary, that offered her the job, is the mother of her high school love interest (Blake), who has recently returned to the family business.  A suspicious death discovered on the grounds overshadows Paradise's return. When the local detective seems set on implicating Blake in the murder, Paradise and Blake set out against all odds to uncover tge truth. Set on beautiful gulf coast of Alabama, this non spicy romance thriller will leave you wanting more.  Good thing, its a new series from the wonderful Colleen Coble.

What an intriguing story Colleen Coble has dropped us into!

I loved the setting. A small zoo for rescued animals? How fun! The characters were all wonderful and it's second chance romance, which is one of my favorite plots :) We also have a super close family and two ADORABLE little boys who melted my heart!

Let's not forget the mysteries. That's right, plural! We have one that is clearly going to be threading through the series and then one that is wrapped up within this book. To be honest, the mystery just for this book fell a little flat for me. The whole ending, as far as that mystery is concerned, felt maybe a bit rushed? Only one person even seemed suspicious and even then, it didn't fit well, to me. I almost wonder if that mystery needed to be spread out too. But it wasn't enough to make me not love the book and be super excited to keep reading! I can't wait to explore more of Paradise's family mysteries and I'm hoping we find out what the heck is up with Creed.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins Publishing for an arc of this book. I received this book in exchange for my honest review. My thoughts are entirely my own.

Paradise Alden had come back to her hometown of Nova Cambridge Alabama to work at The Sanctuary in exchange for room and board while working there. And turns out her childhood sweetheart helps run the sanctuary after his stepfather died six months previously and came back from the Marines to help his mom and little brothers. Paradise wants nothing to do with him until they finally settle their differences and get back together. On Paradise’s first day a woman is found murdered in a horse trailer that was being sent to the sanctuary. Other mysterious things happen including a fire, hyenas getting lose, Paradise getting attacked, and the murder weapon ending up in a van after church. Everyone teams up to find the truth and learn that Owen Shaw who was the stepfather Hanks partner at the vet clinic he used to work out before buying the sanctuary was in financial trouble and learned about gas that was on the property that was worth a lot of money and with the help of Lacey who worked at the Sanctuary they would have succeeded. Paradise also is trying to figure out who murdered her parents and figures out two suspects and ends up clearing them both of suspects even after finding closer in regards to one of them having killed her parents and is no closer to finding the truth but does learn that she has a sibling. This book was very interesting and had some heartfelt moments but was also thrilling and kept me wanting to read more until I found out what all happened. Can’t wait to own a physical copy.

Colleen Coble is fast becoming one of my favorite new to me authors. Each story is great and full of detail and very well-written. I really enjoyed her latest, Ambush. Paradise's life was beautiful until the day her parents were murdered. Now, everything is a mess. Returning to her hometown several years later, she is trying to put her life back together. But there is still danger around as well as possible romance. What will happen next!

A start of a new series by one of my favourite go to authors. Paradise has had a difficult and complicated upbringing but as she returns home to find out more about her parents death and also try to overcome a traumatic event she is reunited with her first love but can he also be a new love? I loved reading about the animals and how they are cared for at the sanctuary. The action kept me on my toes and I was unsure where the author was headed with the outcome but it ended on a slight cliffhanger which has made me feel eager for the next book.

“If people don’t stand up against evil, what kind of world will we be living in?”

I’m already a dedicated fan of Colleen Coble, so when I heard she was starting a new series, I was all in, no questions asked. I didn’t even read the synopsis!

I love that Coble gets her story going and then sprinkles her introductions. Knowing what the characters are experiencing and their emotional responses hooks me, and by the time the author formally introduces them, I’ve already forged a connection and I care about what happens to them from then on.

Coble’s new series focuses on second-chance relationships and returning to the past due to desperation rather than choice. Paradise Alden (read to find out why she was given this name!) is forced to return to the town she grew up in and fled, simply because she needs the work. She’s lost everything and is not in a position to be choosey. Coble uses this to examine courage and the need to forgive ourselves. She weaves the thread of first love together with the heartache of loneliness and desperation and crafts a compelling arc. Coming to work with someone who ‘destroyed’ her life creates tension and Coble harnesses it exceptionally well. Coble’s characters face moral choices and readers get to see how the shadows from their past reach out to shape their future. Watching them deal with disappointment in each other and in God strengthens our connection to them. Patching what’s broken is never easy, especially when one’s financial success depends on it. Regardless, readers will see that experiencing loss and pain has softened Paradise and that affects how she treats others.

The setting is spectacular! I’m already wishing I could visit Sanctuary Wildlife Preserve. What’s not to love about caring for beautiful creatures? Who would have thought this would be the perfect backdrop for mischief and nail-biting tension?!

Three things I’ll remember:
1. Seeing the Bible as our North Star; it helps us navigate life
2. God is never the one who moves
3. We can’t control what happens to us, but we can choose how we respond

I was entertained, I fell in love with the characters and the setting, I’ve built memories with Paradise and Blake and I hope to spend time with them in Prowl, book two in the Sanctuary series.

I have read Colleen Coble’s books for many years. Just when I think she can’t get better, she does!
I loved this book. The interaction between the characters, the events of the past and the cutest little boys made this my new favorite.
I liked Blake and Paradise and the fact that they didn’t stay mad at each other through the whole book. That was refreshing to see them become friends again.
I did not figure out the killer until it was revealed. Good job keeping several people on the suspect list.
Thank you Colleen for a great book that kept me up late!

Wow! This book is captivating and full of surprises! There's suspense, intrigue, and a mystery. I never would have suspected the one perpetrator.

The characters are written brilliantly! Paradise is Amazing! Her strength and tenacity are admirable. Blake, sigh, I picture Steve Irwin here! He takes care of everyone and everything in his care! The family and community are very supportive, and I hope many of them are in future books!

I particularly enjoyed the parts of the book that involved faith in God! Blake and his family are not shy about their faith, and that helps Paradise realize her need for God. It's especially cute when Levi and Isaac chime in with their cute insights!

The whole animal sanctuary is fascinating to me. It amazes me to think about the love and care that the workers instill to the creatures in their care.

Animals, mystery, romance are hallmarks of this first book in the new sanctuary series by Colleen Coble. The characters were complex and worked through their issues over the course of the book which was something that I really appreciated about it.

I enjoyed the Christian elements of the story. It had some really good themes including that God never abandons you. While most of the mysteries were solved, it was obvious that there was going to be a book 2 as one of the side stories has not been tied up. Looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story from here.

I receive complimentary books for various sources including, Netgalley, Authors, and other such sources. I am not required to write a positive review and have not received compensation.

This is a sweet, action filled story of love, secrets, family and second chances all with a mystery wrapped around it. I loved the characters, flaws and all. They seemed real with feelings that are genuine and true to the situations each found themselves in. I wish Paradise had more closure, but that should come in the next book....I hope! Overall a fast paced, action packed book that hooked me from the start. Loved it!

Colleen Coble brings us another excellent and suspenseful story with her new book, Ambush. I love the strength of Paradise as she comes home and tries to solve the murder of her parents while healing herself from the traumas of the past. Paradise learns to trust again as she rekindles her relationship with Blake. Someone is trying to sabotage The Sanctuary, Blake’s mother’s wildlife park, which adds twists and turns, a few surprises, lots of suspense, and some unanswered questions. I cannot wait for the next installment to the story!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A wildlife animal sanctuary is a unique setting for this exciting new series. With a little romance, a lot of animals, and multiple mysteries, this expertly woven suspense is difficult to put down. It was nice to see familiar characters from the Tupelo Grove series, and the author states that she also includes characters from the Pelican Harbor series, which I have not read. But you do not have to read any of those books first to enjoy this one. My only disclaimer is a warning for mention of suicide. I liked that the book concluded well, but did not wrap up perfectly, leaving room for a sequel while also being realistic. If you love a clean whodunit with many Christian elements, that was even better than What We Hide, don’t miss this one. I am already looking forward to book 2.

I loved this book! A perfect blend of intrigue, suspense and how faith can get you through anything. Paradise and Blake and the various side characters are so endearing and I loved the crossover of Hez and Savannah from, "What We Hide." Hopefully Paradise and Blake will make an appearance in the second Tupelo Grove book. I can't wait for the next book in this series. A not to be missed Christian Mystery from the fantastic Colleen Coble!

It was fun to see characters from Pelican Harbor and Tupelo Grove make a cameo appearance in Sanctuary. I thought an animal refuge was a great place to set this romantic suspense mystery drama, filled with mayhem. I loved how the author wove a surprising secret into the story. I liked learning about how the animals were fed and watched over. I learned how dangerous it was to work there and what rules were put in place to keep the animals and humans safe. Colleen said her grandson's birthday celebration at Our of Africa Wildlife Park inspired this novel.

The fact that everyone in the story could have been a suspect was a great twist. Until the very end, I couldn't stop wondering who may have caused the destruction of the Sanctuary. I was utterly captivated by the plot from the very beginning. I was hooked by the story's tension, suspense, and the glimmer of romance.

This book is the first book in an exciting new Sanctuary adventure series. I couldn't be more excited! I look forward to learning more about the animals' care, interactions with humans, and the behind-the-scenes activities. I can't wait to spend more time with the main characters too. Thank you, Colleen. I guarantee this book will be a hit with your book group. You should definitely read this novel!

Taking a job at an animal sanctuary in her hometown, she hopes to heal and also dig deeper into the unsolved mystery behind her parents' murders. Can Blake and Paradise lay aside their differences to help save the sanctuary and figure out her parents' cold case? This spine-tingling novel will draw you in and keep you guessing as you flip pages. A definite must-read for 2025!

Colleen Coble has done it again. It may sound odd to say, but she's created a refreshing twist to the romantic suspense genre. Set in a wildlife sanctuary, Paradise Alden and Blake Lawson share a history along with tragedy in Paradise's life. Someone is attacking the sanctuary and framing Blake. I enjoyed reading about people who aren't in law enforcement trying to do the right thing and solve the mystery of who is behind it all. I loved the setting with the exotic animals and the thread of hope woven throughout the story. And I look forward to the next Sanctuary book. Coble left some questions to be answered later...Perfect!

Fast-paced? ✅ Page-turner? ✅ Suspenseful? ✅ Ambush by Colleen Coble is all that and more! Danger from nature and danger from some unknown person(s). From page one I was captured with the characters and plot. But, I wouldn't expect anything less from a Coble novel.

Releases Mar. 4th. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery story! And it was fun to have Hez and some other characters from What We Hide. :) It's a fast-paced story happening in the present, and it's about something a little different than the usual story that I read! I also like that there's not a lot of misunderstanding that lingers too long, as there often is in other stories. The characters are great, and there's good character development.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance e-copy of this book! All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

I knew when I chose this read that it would be a good one, and Colleen Coble didn't disappoint! If you enjoy a faith based read with non-stop action, this book has it.
You think you know the reason all these dangerous incidents are happening, but then there is something else, another different incident.
Yes, there are murders, and shots fired, sabotage, arson, then add in flooding and tornadoes. I was wondering if everything was related, but wow, and then some answers come, but then what we did know changed! Cliff hanger!
I felt so sorry for Paradise, she is a Veterinarian, and now accepting a new job at an animal sanctuary in her old hometown, Nova Cambridge, Alabama. It must have taken a lot of courage to come back here. A place where her parents were murdered, and a place where she will be taking care of big cats, she is still recovering from a mauling by a leopard.
Then there is Blake Lawson, he is home helping his mother take care of his brothers, and the sanctuary, after the untimely death of his stepfather.
Now I can't wait for the next book in this series!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Thomas Nelson, and was not required to give a positive review.

This book had very good interaction between the main characters. I could feel their connections. There were several mysteries intertwined which made for interesting reading and left me wanting more. I enjoyed the animals. I hope this book is the start of a series because I want to know this family better and see more mysteries solved.

Colleen Coble does it again! This story of Paradise broke my heart at times. She experienced the murder of her parents when she was young. From there she lived in not-so-good circumstances as she was abused. When she becomes an adult she decides to go back home and she takes a job at a wildlife refuge.

The last thing Paradise needed when she went back to her hometown and took on a new job was a dead body. And it was found where she worked, so it brought up memories of her parents' murder. But it didn't stop there...but I can't spoiler it for anyone.

This one was a page-turner for me and I was engaged with the book the entire way through. The characters were realistic and believable and nothing felt contrived. I loved it.

I absolutely loved this story. It is centered around Paradise who has come back to her hometown to work at a sanctuary in hopes of healing from an attack from a big cat. However, it’s owned by Blake’s family and he broke her heart many years ago. While healing, she’s hoping to remember the details of her parents murder which happened when she was young. The murderers were never found. Since that night, her life has been in shambles. Upon her return to work at the sanctuary, there are lots of problems….. There is a murder, break-ins, the cottage Paradise was staying in was burned down and oh so much more evil going on. Thankfully God is in control through it all and all things fall in to place and questions are answered. Thanks to NetGalley for choosing me to read and review this great story. Don’t miss this one.

Loved this book! It was a combination second chance love and mystery with a bit of suspense tucked inside. The story’s setting was original and the book was well written. The characters were engaging and had well defined personalities. Even the sanctuary animals had those well defined personalities. Definitely keeping my eye out for any other books by this author.

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided review.

Ambush
Colleen Coble
March 04, 2025

Paradise Alden traveled down the roads to her old home of Nova Cambridge in Alabama. She had not been back in years. She accepted a job as a vet to work for Jenna Anderson, who owned and operated the large farm that housed The Sanctuary. Paradise would be caring for the animals who are injured or sick as well as administering vaccinations. It sounded well and good but she would also be working for Blake, Jenna´s oldest son. The duo were high school sweethearts but things fell apart. She went off to college to become a veterinarian, and he joined the Marines. Jenna´s two younger sons, Issac and Levi lived with their mom and brother in the large home. Paradise had a small cottage to live in. Although wages were lower than most she had a home. She was starting again after suffering from a horrible arm injury while caring for a large animal.
Ambush will be published by Thomas Nelson on March 04, 2025. I was able to read Coble´s latest novel via NetGalley. This is another unsettling story. The fate of the sanctuary was being threatened by someone. Aside from the daily work of caring for the farm and the animals, caretakers needed to find who was attacking the family and farm buildings. Once again, Colleen Coble gives readers a heart-pounding tale. It is truly a page-turner, exceptionally written. Be certain to pick up Ambush, and do enjoy!

Veterinarian Paradise Alden has scars. She hopes returning to The Sanctuary will help heal at least some of them, maybe the ones that turn her blood cold at the scream of a big cat and just maybe some of the ones that started stacking up the night her parents were murdered. Blake Lawson, however, is not a scar she is ready to heal so quickly. But Paradise has ties to The Sanctuary and to Blake’s mother, Jenna, that are just strong enough to bring her back into his orbit. Those ties are tested when Jenna’s home and livelihood become the target of a war of attrition. One by one, the strange and sometimes deadly attacks stack up to shake confidence in The Sanctuary and the people involved there. And those attacks feel quite real to the reader, as Colleen Coble works the literary magic that has solidified her place in the realms of romantic suspense royalty over the last seventy-five breathtaking novels. Hit by hit, the reader rolls along with Paradise and Blake, unraveling the mysteries of the attacks on their home and of what happened to her parents so many years ago. Put on your big girl boots, because this story is not a trek for the adventure averse!

“I don’t want you to trample my heart again, Paradise, but I’m afraid you might.”

This story is the whole package! Colleen Coble knows how to tear out your heart while dangling a thread of mystery and suspense. Usually, I love the suspense in romantice suspense. And while only a select few authors create romances that fully captivate me—Coble is the goat.

Coble hits on everything:
~ Suspense and action with twisty authentic scenes surrounding an animal habitat. (I never knew so much about hyenas, and the alpha female gives me the creeps!)
~ Faith and inspiration. Every story branded as Christian fiction should have a takeaway, and this one reminds us not to beat down on ourselves. “I wish you could forgive yourself as easily as your God forgives you.” And another quote that hit home especially for me was… “It’s somehow comforting to know events are outside my control and that’s okay. It makes me realize I never had the control I thought I had.”
~ And the romance! Blake is simply perfect. And Paradise simply needed the love he had to offer. He let her know that her struggles have made her stronger. A man should always uplift his counterpart.

The tiny supporting characters—Isaac and Levi—were the cutest! When Paradise loses all that she had, which isn’t much, the conversation about teddy bears was funny and sad and amazing!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All words are my own.

This book kept me guessing the whole way through. I had suspicions and a couple were right but not in the way I expected. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the growth of Paradise throughout the book. Her relationship with others and with God was inspiring. I loved Blake as well and how he was such a good son, brother and friend. I am excited to see the continuation of Paradise's search for answers.

I had the pleasure of being approved for both the ebook and the audiobook advanced reader copy of Ambush by Colleen Coble.
I would read listen to the book during the day when I could and read it at night in bed. I didn't want to put it down.

It's about 2 thirty-something's that come back to their hometown. One to help and the other to heal and find her father's killer. They are working at a wildlife sanctuary when weird things start happening. There's a dead woman in the horses stall, the lion's gate is open, the vet meds are broken into,, security cameras are erased and many other odd and unexplainable things. It's also a story of 2 people that dated in high school becoming friends again and trying to work together to solve why the sanctuary is being targeted. It's a great story with many surprises and some lovely friendships that are built throughout the story. If this becomes a series< I will jump at the chance to read the next book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.

This is the first book by this author that I have read and I really enjoyed it. Her writing style has a smooth flow to it that I thought made this story an easy read. The story started out slowly and towards the ending the pace picked up and it turned into an edge of seat adventure. It was unpredictable a time or two. I was drawn into the book from the first chapter and my interest was peaked through out the story. It was entertaining and definitely a page turner. The characters were strong and didn’t give into letting their fears control how they lived their lives. The book ended with some things left in the air. I will be waiting eagerly to read book two in this series to find out if these questions get answers.
The two main characters, Paradise Alden and Blake Lawson dated in High School. Life hasn’t been kind to Paradise. She became an orphan at an early age and later in life suffered a traumatic experience that both physically and emotionally scarred her. Blake and Paradise come together again when she comes to work at the wild life sanctuary that Blake and his mother Jenna own. The reunion is not pleasant as far as Paradise is concerned. She has agreed to work at the sanctuary in hopes that it will help her heal physically and emotionally from her recent experiences . She wonders if it was a mistake to return to her home town where painful memories from her past are so strong. Can she overcome her fears and find healing at the wild life Sanctuary?
I highly recommend Ambush to readers of Suspense And romance books. It’s the first book in a new series so it’s a good opportunity to start at the beginning. This book is scheduled for release on 3/4/25.

Ambush by Colleen Coble
I loved this one – mystery, suspense, romance, murder, and an animal sanctuary! Wow!
Paradise returns to her hometown, now as a veterinarian for the animal sanctuary. She has questions to answer about her past and maybe some fences to mend in old relationships. With strange mishaps at the animal sanctuary, it seems that someone wants to send a dangerous message.
Blake has guarded his broken heart for a long time. Now he’s back to help his family and run the animal sanctuary. With lots of unanswered questions about close calls at the sanctuary, it’s up to Blake and Paradise to find the truth,
Loved, loved, loved it!
Murder, romance, mystery, an animal sanctuary- all welcome back some favorites from Pelican Harbor!
Imaginative, suspenseful, Colleen Coble impresses me with every new story! This one has it all and you won’t want to put it down! Christian fiction at its finest, I loved it!
The characters are so relatable and well developed, I was with them in the story. I can't wait to buy a hardcopy for my personal library!

AMBUSH by COLLEEN COBLE is an exciting thriller which takes place in Nova Cambridge, Alabama, at The Wildlife Sanctuary, where Paradise Alden joins the staff as a vet. She is determined to face up to her fears and find the person responsible for her parents’ murder. She also has to face her first boyfriend, Blake Lawson, whose betrayal ruined her life, and her fear of big cats after having been mauled by a jaguar.
Blake has left his career in the Marines to help his mother Jenna run the Sanctuary as well as help her with his young brothers after the death of his stepfather., Hank.
The story is exciting as Blake and Paradise work together to find out who is responsible for the murder of animal activist, Danielle Mason, whose bloody body is delivered in a trailer to the property, the burning down of Paradise’s cottage, and the opening up of gates turning dangerous animals loose, thus giving the place a bad name. It seems as though someone is trying to force Jenna to sell…..
The characters are great. I specially love Blake’s little brothers Levi and Isaac, and their interacton with him and Paradise.
There is a strong Christian message of redemption and forgiveness running through the book.
I cannot recommend this unputdownable romantic suspense novel highly enough.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

Ambush by Colleen Coble, book 1 of her Sanctuary series, had me glued to my chair, lost in this fictional world of danger and secrets. Amongst love and tragedy, animals—some cute and fuzzy, some definitely not—and so many action-packed shenanigans, I was trying to catch my breath. Seriously, it was exciting. Colleen’s writing is every bit as intriguing and intricate as any of Agatha Christie’s mystery. Don’t miss this suspenseful read.

When it comes to romantic suspense, Colleen Coble is one of my go tos. She never fails to create unique stories that will keep me at the edge of my seat from start to finish, while also weaving in romance and faith effortlessly. This one was no exception. The last thing that Paradise expected when she returned to her hometown to work at a wildlife refuge and learn more about her parents' murder was... well, another murder. A murder that it seems someone is trying to pin on her first love. Despite their initial rocky reunion, the two find themselves dodging danger and trying to discover the truth behind both murders... all while those old feelings start to creep back in. This was definitely an exciting read. The setting of the wild animal sanctuary really added an extra sense of danger to the story too--- not only do we have to worry about the human killers, but also the added risks that these animals brought with them. I'm always a fan of second chance romances as well, so that definitely drew me in as well. While the primary mystery is solved in the end, there are definitely some questions that go unanswered, leaving me looking forward to seeing what is to come next in the series. If you love Christian romantic suspense, this is definitely one to check out.

(Please note, there are some brief, non-descriptive mentions of sexual assault in the past which could be triggering for some readers.)

**ARC received via Netgalley for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Ambush is the first of a new series set in the coastal area near Gulf Shores, Alabama. This was hard to put down with lots of action, danger, mystery, and suspense. It is a sweet story of new faith and a second chance at romance with great characters and setting. Paradise and Blake, high school sweethearts, have to work together on Blake's mom animal reserve when Paradise returns to work as the reserve veterinarian. She is also trying to find who murdered her parents. But there are more pressing matters with a body found and numerous incidents that endanger the people and animals. This edgy story kept me engrossed to the end with all the things going on and possible suspects, and with some real surprises from the past. It was fun seeing characters from other series show up. This is another winner by one of my favorite authors. Looking forward to the next one. I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by Coble! She has outdone herself in my opinion. I really enjoyed the location living in Alabama myself. I love that it was wild animals and that there was a redeeming quality with the main female character having experienced some trauma with big cats before. I love that it’s just the start of a whole series and can’t wait to read more! I loved the little boys and truly felt all the emotions as though I was reading a true account. Really well written, exciting novel!

Colleen Coble has written another nail-biter plot in “Ambush.” The whole story takes place around a wild animal sanctuary down south, and the descriptions and such make me wish I could visit an animal sanctuary for myself! Blake, his mom, Jenna, and his two young brothers run the wildlife sanctuary. Strange events and attacks have been happening at the sanctuary. Paradise Alden comes to town to fill in as vet at the sanctuary, and for her it is coming home to a place that holds good memories and bad ones. We see so much growth in Paradise as a person throughout the book. She is real to life, and her life experiences make the reader’s heart ache for the tragedies in her life. Paradise, led by Blake and Jenna, grows spiritually as well. Blake is a calm and steady presence, despite the repeated attacks on the Sanctuary, the family, Paradise, and himself. The mysteries are deeply embedded in this plot. The ending doesn’t even reveal the solution to all of the mysteries! Ms. Coble does an amazing job weaving a plot that keeps the reader pushing through to the end. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who enjoy suspense stories.

I requested a copy of this book for review. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Colleen Coble presents Ambush (A Sanctuary Novel Book 1), and things are dangerous in the wildlife refuge known as The Sanctuary! Paradise Alden has accepted a veterinarian job in her old hometown, the one place she never thought she would return to for many reasons. It has been fifteen years, and maybe Paradise is going to find out if she is strong enough to face the demons from her past—abuse in the foster care system, betrayal by her first love, and the near-deadly jaguar attack that almost cost her career. She does not trust men or God and is unsure she can trust herself.
Blake Lawson is the man who broke Paradise’s heart and has since made her distrust all men. However, seeing him makes her heart beat faster and her knees weak. Paradise knows he has grown into a good man who has returned home to help his mom run the Sanctuary and help take care of his young half-brothers.
The day Paradise arrives, a body is found on the grounds. That was only the beginning of her “Welcome Home Party,” as much more mischief, mayhem, and murder continued. The setting of The Sanctuary is almost like the character itself. While it is a beautiful habitat during the day, it can be creepy and deadly at night. And never more so than during a raging storm when electricity is lost. Then, you plunge into a depth of darkness like nowhere else, surrounded by wild animals in enclosures depicting their natural habitats. And when a murderer is on the loose somewhere on the premises, where can you hide for protection? Will the animals protect you or harm you? This one is a thriller!
Thomas Nelson and NetGalley provided me with a complimentary copy of this book. However, my opinions are entirely my own and uninfluenced.

Thank You Netgalley and Colleen Coble for another great mystery. I received the electronic and audio ARC. My favorite way to read books are as a tandem read. I would say this book was a second chance romance with a mystery involved. The mystery part wasn't cheesy and was very real. I loved the safari feel of the book and enjoyed the whole thing. This is a Christian tagged read so if any mention of the big guy bothers you, I would pass.

Colleen Coble is a master storyteller, weaving tales that pull the reader in and keep you there until the end. Ambush is no different. With a unique setting at an animal sanctuary and unknown danger at every turn, the pages will fly by as you race to find all the answers.
The characters are so real: flawed and not perfect but genuine in their efforts to improve. The reader gets to learn alongside them as they navigate life. With a present time threat and cold case murders, the danger grows every day. Throw in danger, mystery attacks, and threats in the most unexpected places and the learning curve is huge. I loved being along for the ride! The setting helped add to the story, like the backdrop to a movie. The layers make the story come to life.
Colleen Coble kept me engrossed in the story from beginning to end. Each twist added another layer of adrenaline and suspense to keep me glued to the book. A must read for anyone looking for suspense, faith, and romance in one wonderful story. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Wildlife veterinarian Paradise returns to her hometown and a wildlife sanctuary operated by her former boyfriend and his mother. She is hoping to regain her confidence dealing with large cats after being attacked by a leopard. She must also face the demons from her past, the death of her parents and rejection by family and friends. The refuge is under by animal activists. A murder, sabotage, burglary and hurricane add to the tension. Can Paradise overcome her fears and feeling of rejection?
This book had me hooked from the beginning and I highly recommend it. I was given an advanced copy for my unbiased review.

Ambush is a thrilling adventure set in a wildlife sanctuary. The story is captivating, the characters are inviting, and the location is perfect. There are multiple layers to the plot, so each page is gripping and satisfying, but not complete, which meant the pages kept flying! Like Paradise, I wanted answers, and I wanted closure. Instead, I received an adventure with a little bit of both. I love that this is a series starter, so I know there is more to come. In the meantime, this story is brilliant and a satisfying intro. I don’t want to divulge any details, so if you enjoy thrilling adventures, mystery on multiple layers, romance, and small town living amid a wildlife sanctuary, you are going to love this.
I also had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook version and the narrator did an excellent job of capturing the characters: personalities, accents, and emotions.

This is the first Colleen Coble book I have read. Originally I picked this book up through my local book store ARC program because of the cover. I haver seen some online chatter about Coble, and figured I could get in on the hype.

Coble's writing style has a smooth flow to it that made this story an easy read. There were no errors that made the story difficult to follow. The story started out slow and towards the ending the pace picked up. It was time to put the book down for the night, but it had me at the edge of my seat...so I stayed up way to late to finish it. It was unpredictable. I was drawn into the book from the first chapter and my interest was peaked through out the story. It was entertaining and definitely a page turner.

The characters were strong and didn’t give into letting their fears control their decisions. The book ended with some things left in the air. I will be waiting eagerly to read book two in this series to find out if these questions get answers.

This is an incredible action-packed suspenseful mystery set in an animal sanctuary. After fifteen years away, Veterinarian Paradise Alden returns to get answers to her parents' murder. She is still healing from injuries in her previous job and is wary of the big cats. Someone is targeting the park with a serious of escalating incidents. Co-owner Blake Lawson is suspected of murder when a dead body appears at the park. Even though Paradise feels like her ex high school boyfriend Blake betrayed her fifteen years ago, she doesn't believe that he is a murderer. I received a complimentary copy of this book. I received an ARC from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and was intrigued by the storyline. A great second chance romance where two people had a tragic event occur in their high school years that sent Paradise away from Blake. Terrible things happen to Paradise when she is sent away to another home. Now she gets the chance to work with him and his family at their Wildlife Sanctuary but the Sanctuary has someone who is trying to take them out of business and ruin their livelihood.

Lots of twists and turns in this book and it will have you on the edge of your seat. Great story about healing, grieving, mystery, murder and more. One I will definitely be recommending!

Ambush is the first installment in the Sanctuary series, and also marks the first book I’ve ever read from Colleen Coble. I can tell that it lightly connects to other series she’s penned, one completed and one ongoing: Pelican Harbor and Tupelo Grove, respectively. This book was mysterious, intense, emotional, and propulsive. I was intrigued by the characters at first meeting, and then I quickly became completely invested in their stories, from the pain of their pasts to the romance of their present. Ambush excites me because, not only am I incredibly interested to see where Sanctuary goes from here, I’ve been introduced to a new-to-me author whose writing I really enjoy and who had a huge backlist for me to dig into while I’m eagerly awaiting the second installment in this series.

Paradise Alden, our female main character, is a vet struggling through PTSD after suffering an attack by a jaguar. She’s facing her fears on multiple fronts by taking a job at a wildlife refuge, The Sanctuary, in her hometown—a place she ran from years ago. Blake Lawson is a former Marine paramedic who has come home to help his mom manage The Sanctuary after his stepfather’s death. He’s also Paradise’s ex-boyfriend, the one who broke her heart fifteen years ago. After this betrayal and the murder of her parents, she fled Nova Cambridge, Alabama, and lost her trust in men and God and even herself. This job at The Sanctuary is her chance to find some answers and lay some things to rest. But maybe, just maybe, it will also be a sanctuary for her. Maybe here, she can start to heal.

The Sanctuary specializes in providing refuge to exotic pets who have been mistreated and abandoned. From chimps and wolves to tigers and parrots, The Sanctuary is a safe place for them to recover from their mistreatment and live a happy, comfortable life for the rest of their days. It’s a fascinating setting, one that I found so fun and unique. It provided Coble with a lot of room for interesting tension and plot twists. The Sanctuary was the first element of the story with which I fell in love. But then there were the characters. Not only did I grow to love Paradise and Blake, I was also charmed by Blake’s mom and his two young half brothers. Coble did a great job capturing the voices of these five and seven year-old boys without making them overly cutesy or too well-spoken. She struck a balance with them that felt believable and sweet.

As is coming to be the case with so many Christian romantic suspense authors I’ve had the pleasure of reading recently, Coble does a wonderful joy weaving faith into her writing without every coming across as preachy. Paradise’s faith journey was an important component of this book, and it was handled beautifully. The faith here managed to be both vital to the story and understated; it added without ever taking anything away from the plot. I’m eager to see if Coble’s inclusion of faith is always this expertly handled.

The book has an ending that satisfies without wrapping up completely. There are still some deep mysteries to be addressed, and more growth and development to be seen in the characters and their relationships. My guess would be that further installments in the series would continue to largely follow Paradise and Blake.

Ambush is a phenomenal series starter. It’s well paced, well written, and well balanced. The setting is unique, the characters compelling, and the mysteries at its core intriguing. There wasn’t any element of this book that didn’t work for me. I’ll be counting down the months until I can see where the story takes Paradise, Blake, and the rest of the Sanctuary gang next!

There is an expression I've heard my own family use that God will never give you more than you can handle. Blake's family and Paradise certainly test that expression with one problem after another. There is plenty of action from wild animal near misses and explosives in beer cans. It honestly seems like this family can't catch a break. Add that to Paradise's reason for returning to down to find justice for her parents and she should be overwhelmed. In the midst of all the turmoil, she is forced to put her live second to save a child and through God get past the nightmares of her animal attack. Blake, who is good and strong and solid and family oriented, is the first she tells that she felt God's presence in that moment. I don't know exactly how I fell about strong religious overtones in books but in this book, it felt right. Blake and Paradise and his family had to heal and find strength and they did so through God. We truly get a front row seat for Paradise's journey including her once again feeling betrayed but it was cute how quickly she took stock of what mattered and the chasm closed.
The inner strength for both Blake and Paradise and his mother keep them going when others might throw in the towel. Through Blake's mother and much younger brothers, Paradise gets to experience a family and family can change how you see the world as it does for her.
This was a really good book with small religious overtones and a unique settings and unique action. It is well worth the read. If you are unsure as I am about God in the book, let me say it is tastefully done and feels authentic. We do have one loose thread that makes me wonder if we will return to this family and the magnificent animals they give sanctuary to.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction | Thomas Nelson for the opportunity to read this ARC.

That’s remarkable when you think about the challenges you’ve overcome to do it. I believe God was loving you, steering you, even when you didn’t sense him there.” **

Colleen Coble begins another new series in a big way with “Ambush.”

After suffering a serious injury by a jaguar, veterinarian Paradise Alden returns to her hometown to work at the Sanctuary Wildlife Preserve — which just happens to be owned by the family of the boy her broke her heart 15 years ago.

But as more and more dangerous and potentially deadly occurrences happen on the Sanctuary, Paradise must help Blake in determining who is the actual target, and why. Can they overcome their past losses and traumas, as well as their personal history, to figure out what’s truly happening? And can they remain safe while saving the family business?

As always, Coble provides a story filled with twists and turns and many heart-thumping moments, both suspense-wise and romance-wise. She creates very real and relatable characters, as well as a couple of adorable little boys and some sweet animals, and visits from characters and places from her other series, like Pelican Harbor and Tupelo Grove.

The author also fills “Ambush” with several great themes, like we have to be willing to let people, as well as God, into our lives (“Allowing no one into your inner circle is a tough way to live. We all need other people. And God”); feeling like you fail the ones you love and how to overcome that; God can heal our hurting places; we need to learn to forgive ourselves as well as others; and struggles can make us stronger.

Fans of Lynette Eason, Kelly Irvin, Terri Blackstock and Irene Hannon will love this novel, which is due out March 4.

Five stars out of five.

this was a really good book. and it was really different to any ive read recently. actually it stood alone as different from anything ive read. and that is stellar stuff. and made it so unique i enjoyed it all the more.
thats not to say it didnt follow all the right formats for a brilliant read.
it had all the parts we want and need. it was also so much more than one genre. the romance was there just enough to soften the edge of the content and also it was such a thoughtful and tender relationship that was based on past and futures healed. and also our MCF healing herself. and believing in trusting others which must be hard given her past.
paradise upbring has been a smidge away from horrific. to say shes still fighting on each day is a minor miracle if you ask me. her parents were murdered and there followed miserable years in the care system. of course a lost love didnt help things.
coming home after 15 years she determined to find out what happened to her parents. but when she gets there twisted events start happening. putting her in possible danger. with the help of her old friend(should be much more if you ask me) together they figure out whats going on.
the author bought the locations and characters to life. and i thoroughly enjoyed this book. i shall be looking for more from this author for sure.

Wow! This was a marathon for me. Intense is not even descriptive enough for this mystery. Gripping the arms of the chair and nail biting were involved as I blew through this book. The characters were fighting those with two legs and some with four legs at various times.

Paradise has seen the worse that life has to offer. Foster care and unsolved murder have scarred her life. She trusts no one, especially men. Now to top it all off, a jaguar attack has left her scarred both physically and mentally. She needs something new, which is how she ends up back home at The Sanctuary, which is a sanctuary for exotic animals.

Blake's mother, Jenna, is determined to make The Sanctuary a success. When Blake realizes that the vet his mother has hired is none other than Paradise, he is not happy. They have not seen each other in many years, and their last meeting was not a good one.

When a dead body is found the first day Paradise arrives, they realize they will have to work together and put their past behind them. This is just the beginning as so called accidents continue to happen and things get a little hairy at times. I accused everyone at some point and time, as the author just kept throwing in another twist.

Colleen Coble does a phenomenal job of building the characters so that you can know them, blemishes included. It was an emotional story as Paradise fights against the trauma that has held her captive. Blake is fighting a shadow from his past where he feels responsible for someone. Both need to find inner forgiveness. Jenna's faith was so strong. She was a determined prayer warrior whose faith kept her going. The current crisis has only strengthened their resolve. There were so many touching scenes that I cannot even begin to touch on them. Just be ready to dive into the world of exotic animals and all that entails.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Ambush by Colleen Coble is the first book in A Sanctuary Novel series. It is a well written, easy to read and imagine Christian suspenseful romance story. This is a very good story that I found very difficult to put down. This story is filled with suspense with things that keep happening at the wildlife refuge.

I enjoyed this story so much. I enjoyed the interaction between Blake’s family members. I especially enjoyed how Paradise and Blake went about rebuilding their friendship and trust in each other. I found how she got her name to be interesting. The background story of Blake’s family is very touching.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

My first book of 2025 and I loved it! There is an intensity to everything that is happening to Paradise and Blake. Both have returned to Pelican Bay because they have to, and now they wonder if they might have a second chance at love. First they have to survive everything going wrong at the sanctuary for exotic animals that Blake and his mom runs much is happening, but this redemptive story will keep you coming back for more. I highly recommend it!

Thank you, Ms. Coble, for allowing me to be on your launch team. This story was wonderful and I was not ready for it to end.

Ambush by Colleen Coble

Paradise Alden was doing the one thing she swore she would not do, go home. Nova Cambridge held horrible memories for her, this was the place where her life blew up.
But when Jenna Anderson, who owned the animal sanctuary in town, called her and told her she needed a full time vet and that she knew that Paradise needed a change of scenery since her attack, Paradise agreed. But as she got closer to the sanctuary, she wondered how Blake, Jenna's son, would feel having her on site. She also wondered if she would be able to do the job.

Blake Lawson had loved Paradise with all of his heart but they did not part on good terms. Now his mother is telling him that she has agreed to be their vet for the next year, why hadn't his mom told him before now, before he was blind sided? The sanctuary did need a full time vet so who better? He knew that if nothing else, Paradise loved animals and would fight to keep them healthy and safe.

The day that Paradise arrives at her new job, a body of a woman is found on the property. She had no idea that her life was about to be turned upside down again.

“But her only answers were here in this place, where shadows from the past still reached out to shape her life.”
Colleen Coble is one of the authors that is on my automatic read list, and this book demonstrates the reason perfectly. She does an amazing job creating suspense while peppering in details from the characters’ backstories. She sets the scene so well that it’s almost like I’m experiencing everything with them. The first book in the Sanctuary series focuses on forgiveness, second chances at love, and how God uses even the bad things that happen in our lives for good. I felt so bad for everything Paradise had been through. Even after everything she had faced, she managed to stay kind and gentle. I can’t imagine being suspected of the things Blake was being accused of and I loved how he and Paradise supported each other through everything. I did guess one of the conspirators but the twists made me doubt myself. The ending was so surprising and suspenseful and I absolutely cannot wait until book 2 comes out.

Paradise Alden hasn't had life easy. Now that she is grown and has a veterinarian career to move forward with, she decided to come back to the town of her childhood. At this point in life, she needs to find out who murdered her parents. She has taken a job at Sanctuary Wildlife Preserve even though she may have to be in contact with Blake Lawson. She will never forgive him for betraying her.
Six months ago, Blake returned home to help his widowed mother with his little brothers and the sanctuary full of exotic animals that she runs. He is trying to do everything possible to keep the place going so the family has an income and help them keep their home. He is astounded to learn that Paradise is the new vet that his mother Jenna Anderson has hired. She broke his heart years ago.
I received an advanced reader's copy of Ambush from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley and this is my own unsolicited opinion about the book. I really like it. I got caught up in the story right away. I love the faith that Blake and Jenna shows and understand the bitterness Paradise lives with. The story is a good demonstration of the painful life a child can go through with the loss of parents and being put in foster care. There is mystery, suspicious activity and danger. Blakes devotion to his sweet young brothers is touching. The animals and their characteristics lend a really interesting portion to the story. The hyenas are so creepy.
I love that this is the beginning of the series and look forward to more mystery being solved for the characters and the sanctuary. This is for all who enjoy reading clean mysteries with action and a spark of romance.

This was a great Christian based book. You can feel the pain and struggle that Paradise is going through, but she still is willing to help others. She is mentally and physically at the end of her rope. One day event changes how she views her whole life and circumstance. You see and feel the change in her. Blake is the perfect person for her. The love he has for Paradise and his family is what makes him that way. Through everything going on at the sanctuary Blake doesn’t lose his faith in God.
You kinda see who maybe the culprit with some of that persons actions. But the twist with the villain I did not see it going.

Would highly recommend.

This was such a good book. I haven’t read a lot of Coleen Coble books but will definitely be reading more. The story was fast-paced and kept my attention. The setting was different than others I have read which was a nice change of pace. Highly recommend this book and hope there is another in the series.

A unique and interesting plot that takes place at a wild animal refuge in Alabama. Paradise Alden returns to The Sanctuary run by mother and son duo Blake Lawson and Jenna Anderson. She will be a Vet to the exotic animals that have been rescued and face her fears after being mauled by a big cat. She also wants to find out what really happened when her parents were murdered when she was a child.
When strange things begin to happen at The Sanctuary, Paradise and Blake try to make sense of it all. They ponder who is really being targeted, where it stems from, and if it could have started with his step-father’s death.
Packed with danger, sneaky villains and lots of supposition, this suspenseful story will keep you guessing. There is a second chance romance, characters maturing in their faith, and interaction with hyenas and tigers that will have you holding your breath.
Ms Coble always presents a thrilling story that makes you think.

Paradise came back to her hometown of Nova Cambridge Alabama to work as a zoo vet for the Sanctuary wildlife Refuge.
Her former boyfriend, Blake Lawson who let her down after her parents were murdered when she was 9 works at the Sanctuary too and doesn't know she's coming.
The Sanctuary had been harassed by a group of protesters who used intimidation and violence to try and put the Sanctuary out of business.
The day Paradise arrived, one of the protestors, Ms. Mason was found dead in a horse trailer on Sanctuary property with a knife wound and Blake and his mother, Jenna were being blamed for it.
Then a group that was touring the park Blake was leading started shooting towards a grizzly bear and cubs, Paradises home was set on fire and a child was rescued from a tigers cage when the gate was left unlocked.
Who is responsible - you will be guessing until the end of the story!

Ambush by Colleen Coble is an exhilarating start to an enthralling series that seamlessly blends mystery with themes of faith. As the first book in the series, it captivated me from the very first page, immersing me in a world where suspense and spirituality beautifully intertwine. Coble’s masterful storytelling kept me on the edge of my seat as I unraveled a gripping mystery alongside a deeply resonant spiritual journey. The characters are richly developed, each facing their own struggles and growth, which restored my faith in God's presence and influence in our lives. Coble's ability to weave together a compelling plot with profound faith-based themes makes Ambush a standout, and I eagerly anticipate the next installment in this inspiring series. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a thrilling mystery that also touches the soul. Five stars!

Ambush is the first book in the Sanctuary series which is set in Alabama. I have loved every book by this author. I love the way she tells a story. This was a fantastic start for this series. There is so much to enjoy. A family that puts each other first, a long-lost romance, murder, suspicious deaths, a sanctuary for wild animal, and a killer who is not done yet. I highly recommend this book.

I’m a long-time Colleen Coble fan, though I’ve fallen a little bit behind with some of her newer releases. When I had the opportunity to read this start to her new series as an ARC, I took it, the setting made this mama of a wild animal obsessed toddler want to read it ASAP. I was a little worried I’d feel like I was missing something since I had seen this was related to her Tupelo Grove series with Rick Acker and I haven’t gotten to those yet. But I wasn’t lost- it just made me intrigued to find out more about some of those secondary characters sooner rather than later.

First of all, let me tell you how much I loved all the animals in this book. From Rosy the fennec fox to Tigris the white tiger and those sketchy hyenas… I just loved it. Reminded me of the private animal park where we took our son for a visit last fall. So fun! I loved Blake and Paradise’s love for the animals and how important they all were to the story.

Secondly, the second chance romance is perfect and sweet. I love the real conversations, the conflicting emotions, and ultimately, the grace given to overcome the past. I was really rooting for Paradise and Blake and I hope this series continues to follow them and continues to explore some of the threads left hanging at the end of this one (which I’m sure it will).

Third, I really enjoyed the mystery/suspense here. Our characters face stressors from all sides- internally and externally- both from man and nature. It kept me on my toes and turning pages, and while I had suspicions, I didn’t fully guess the culprit! I still have some questions I hope the series answers but it’s nothing that’s going to drive me nuts until the next book comes out (which I count as a good thing)!

Recommended for lovers of Colleen Coble, romantic suspense, animals, protector MMCs, strong FMCs overcoming a lot, second chance romances, and so much more.

This novel is a wild ride in a wild animal sanctuary where the owner is being threatened and is in constant danger of being killed. That’s the scenario when Paradise comes back to Alabama to accept a job as a vet at the sanctuary and finds more than she bargained for. The layers in this book are numerous and all are equally memorable. Paradise is dealing with trauma in her childhood, betrayal by her best friend Blake (who happens to be the son of the sanctuary’s owner), and new trauma from being mauled by a big cat. Blake has his own issues to deal with as he takes seriously his commitment to his mom Jenna and his two half-brothers. All of the characters popped off the page and right into my imagination. I could picture Paradise with her “mane” of hair and the two precocious little boys who loved adventure. The mystery is in who is targeting the sanctuary and why. There are many twists and red herrings before the culprit is ultimately revealed, making the book absorbing and totally captivating. I enjoyed the themes of forgiveness, restoration, seeking truth, sacrifice, and family issues. I especially enjoyed seeing characters from a previous book who live in Tupelo Grove, from another series by Coble and Acker. The truth is I really enjoyed my journey through this fascinating book in which I learned a lot about wild animals and even more about human nature and how to make wiser choices. The faith foundation is obvious but not overwhelming to the storyline, but rather adding to the overall tale. I cannot wait for more in this series and to discover who will be featured next from the sanctuary or its environs!

I have yet to read a book by Colleen Coble! Once again her newest book is absolutely wonderful! I didn’t realize this was the start of a new series. I thought it was a stand alone so imagine my surprise at the end when not everything was wrapped up and I was left wanting more! I will be very impatiently wait for the next book in the series!

Colleen Coble does such a beautiful job of hooking you at the beginning and then slowly reeling you in with characters and their stories. The way she introduces and bulids upon each person in her books makes you feel like you are there in the story and you move about the characters days and lives.

I love a good second chance romance book and Ambush give you just that! Paradise Alden returns to her hometown for the first time in years. With her she bings the baggage of the past from when her parents were brutally murdered as well as some new trauma from being attacked by a jaguar she was caring for. She will be recovering from her attack but can she handle working for her former high school sweetheart that she feels betrayed her when she was in the foster care. Can they move on from the past or will the past continue to haunt them?

I adore all of the emotions I had while reading this book. I laughed. I cried. I was on the edge of my seat! Seriously, I have no desire to ever come in any sort of contact with a hyena…ever! This book will take you for a wild ride and have you suspecting everyone of sabotage and murder. I am eagerly awaiting book two!

"Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my!" No, I'm not reviewing 'The Wizard of Oz'—but 'Ambush' is an intriguing suspense set on a wildlife refuge which protects exotic, but frightening animals such as lions, tigers, jaguars, laughing hyenas, and bears! Oh my! 😳

Once attacked by a black jaguar, Paradise Alden accepts a position working as a veterinarian on a wildlife sanctuary in her hometown. Suffering from more than one trauma in her life causes her to be somewhat withdrawn and defensive at first, but her courage and fortitude causes her character to evolve tremendously. And Blake is just about perfect . . . godly, compassionate, brave, loving, and selfless.

I enjoyed learning about the wild animals in their habitat—even the BIG cats have a way of greeting their caretakers in an affectionate manner and who knew hippos liked whole watermelons? Interesting stuff! Although not preachy at all, the author included a faith thread throughout which served to enhance the novel for me. It's actually a mystery within a mystery as a major whodunit is solved and others are left unresolvable for future books, I presume. Cannot wait!

Christian Suspense readers will love this first book of the Sanctuary series. Set in an Alabama wildlife refuge, Paradise has come back to try to get her life back on track and get some answers about her parent’s murders. Blake has recently moved back to help his mother with the refuge and two small step brothers after his stepfather’s death. A series of dangerous incidents, an obnoxious cop and a variety of suspects will have readers guessing to the end. Loved learning about the different animals, their habitats and personalities. Loved the little brothers; “out of the mouths of babes.” It will be hard to wait for the next book. Highly recommended,

O, the emotions in this story will have you all over the spectrum! From sadness to joy, hope, fear, angst, love, and healing, you will experience the whole gamut!
Immersed in Paradise's pain and heartbreaking history from page one, you are drawn into her world, but more Colleen has the ability to make her your new best friend, and you will be cheering her on!
The history between Blake and Paradise could be a stumbling block or a stepping stone. With the attacks against the Sanctuary escalating and nature throwing in her own set of hair rising obstacles, both of them are challenged with a choice. Do you let evil win, or do you choose the Light?
You'll have to read to see the conclusion for yourself, but be prepared you won't see the end coming.

Ambush by Colleen Coble is a fast paced read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With twists and turns in perfect timing, Coble knows how to hold her reader’s attention. I loved the multiple dimensions of this story: romance, baggage from the past, intrigue, and danger. Plus, the setting of a wildlife refuge was fascinating in and of itself!

I have never been disappointed by a Colleen Coble book. Her storytelling ability is spot on, and her characters are easy to relate to. When is comes to romantic suspense, Coble is at the top of my list!

If Colleen Coble writes it, I’ll read it… she’s that good at crafting riveting romantic suspense with layered characters I really come to care about. So needless to say, picking up Ambush was a must for me. Bonus points because it starts a new series, and double bonus points because it’s set near some of her other series so we get to hang out with familiar fave characters as well as the new ones!

There’s something about wild animals and severe weather that make suspense novels feel even more ominous, raising the stakes and keeping me braced for the next shoe to drop, and Ambush brings both of those elements to the mix. I loved that it’s set on a wildlife refuge in Alabama, complete with lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) and hyenas and foxes and panthers and hippos and a host of other creatures. Adding to that amped-up tension that comes with the mere presence of these potentially-dangerous animals is Paradise’s past big-cat-related trauma (I really felt her battle with fear, particularly in a couple of key scenes) and the fact that someone is trying to sabotage The Sanctuary and is willing to kill to do so. Throw in the unpredictability of Alabama’s unsettled weather patterns, and Paradise’s romantic history with Blake Lawson, and you need to be prepared that you’ll likely have to remind yourself to breathe more than once.

That said, I also appreciated how Coble achieves a great balance of acknowledging the wild nature of the animals at The Sanctuary and the need to always keep that danger in mind, while still giving them loads of fun personality, particularly in their interactions with Blake’s family and Paradise. Coble also finds this balance in conveying Paradise’s very valid fears and, in contrast, emphasizing the peace of God (and the courage it provides) that’s available to her when she asks. The scenes that bring this into focus are so well-written and were really touching to this former anxiety girl who empathized with Paradise’s journey. And I could talk for hours about how much I loved the subplot involving the ripple effects of Paradise’s following the nudging of God toward a difficult side character.

Bottom Line: Ambush by Colleen Coble grabbed my interest from word one and not only held it through the whole story but also has me champing at the bit to see how the arc involving the murder of Paradise’s parents – and the secrets she uncovers in this book – will play out over the course of this new series. I loved everything about this story, from Blake & Paradise’s relationship (and all its complex layers from the past) to the well-crafted, edge of your seat suspense plot, Blake’s endearing little brothers & their big-hearted mom, the unique setting, and the moving notes of grace. It was also fun to get to hang out with familiar faces from a couple of her other series, though this reads just fine as a standalone if you haven’t read her Pelican Harbor or Tupelo Grove (written with Rick Acker) series yet. I can’t wait for the second book – November can’t get here fast enough!

"A big truck barreled past them, and it backfired as it drew alongside Blake’s pickup. He jerked at the loud sound before he could cover it, and his heart rate accelerated. He hid the calming breaths he took before Paradise could notice. Noises like that took him right back to that last ambush."
Providing sanctuary to wild animals can be complicated. Especially if someone is out for revenge. This latest romantic suspense book by Colleen Coble is fantastic. But I'm not sure that it's one you want to read right before bed. You do definitely want to read it if this is your genre.
I have been to the zoo many times in my life. After reading this book, I will never look at the cages and habitats in the same way. Man against beast adds another layer of suspense to a book that goes beyond the typical man versus man.
But I do love the characters in this book. So many great themes as well. Loss. Redemption. Moving on from the past.
The book did wrap up some of the mystery portion. But I missed the fact that this book is part of a series. Many unanswered questions remain. I will definitely be reading the next book.
I did get to read an early version of this book on NetGalley. I read all of Colleen's books, And I wanted to review this one. All opinions are my own.

After a betrayal by her first love sent her away from Nova Cambridge, Paradise planned never to return, but circumstances have conspired to force her back, not only to Nova Cambridge, but to Blake and the wildlife refuge his family runs. She hoped to heal, but a series of incidents that increasingly clearly appear attacks, coupled with a deputy who'd like to pin them all on Blake, make for a far from restful return. However, enforced time with Blake is clearing the air about the event that separated them and showing why they got on so well in the first place. But with a potential killer around, will they live to try to forge a new relationship?

A definite edge-of-your seat read, with a very mysterious and furtive antagonist who's eager to make things look like accidents... This totally kept me guessing, with no particularly clear suspects and the potential for a tie to various previous events muddying the waters. Throw in a deputy with sub-ideal motives and no interest in the truth, and you can be confident nothing will be easy. At the same time, having to work together against a common enemy does help force Blake and Paradise to work things out, so I guess there's a silver lining. Discussing the truth of Blake's betrayal is hard but necessary, and I loved the way they were eventually able to make peace. Blake's two young half-brothers are a great addition to the story, too, even when they're not going places they shouldn't. All in all, a great read and I'm looking forward to the next book.

Paradise Alden's childhood in Nova Cambridge, Alabama, was idyllic until the night her parents were murdered. Since then, life has left her scarred. The abuse she suffered in the foster care system, her first love's betrayal, and the jaguar attack that nearly destroyed her career have led to an unshakable distrust--in men, in God, and maybe even in herself.

She returns to The Sanctuary run by mother and son duo Blake Lawson and Jenna Anderson. She will be a Vet to the exotic animals that have been rescued and face her fears after being mauled by a big cat. She also wants to find out what happened when her parents were murdered when she was a child.

I felt as though the story was not finished, however, and hope that it is in the next book.

Ambush is another gripping romantic suspense by Colleen Coble. I've been a fan of hers since I discovered her books several years ago. This new book did NOT disappoint. I think one of my favorite things about this book is that we get to see characters from two of her previous series. And it wasn't just that these characters were mentioned, they play important roles in this story.

Ambush introduces us to two new main characters, Paradise and Blake, as well as Blake's family, plus additional family, friends, and a host of characters who COULD be the ones responsible for the dasterdly deeds taking place at the wildlife park, The Sanctuary owned by Blake's mother, Jenna.

There are a couple of main storylines taking place. Mysteries that need solved. In addition to helping Blake find out why someone seems to be saboutaging The Sanctuary, Paradise is back in the town where she grew up to try to figure out something of great importance to her, even though it meant being in close proximity to Blake, her ex who she hasn't been able to forgive all these years.

I loved the animals in the Sanctuary and the interactions with them, even the hyenas.

There was a point when I was reading that I was thinking, hey, this could even make an enjoyable action movie. Danger coming from multiple sides, both natural and from humans, intrigue, mystery, dangerous animals not fully contained at times. And of course a redemption thread, with faith and learning to trust the Lord.

Now, to wait impatiently for the next book. If you aren't a fan of cliffhangers and not-fully-resolved storylines, you may just want to wait for the next book to come out before reading this one. You've been warned.

I received an e-copy of this book through NetGalley and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.

Paradise Alden has returned to the town she grew up in after fifteen years. Nova Cambridge, Alabama. She is now a veterinarian and has returned to work at the Sanctuary, a that is home to bears, hyenas, giraffes, big cats-as in tigers, jaguars, leopards, and so many other wild animals. Did I mention hippos? Paradise bears the scars of a not-so-long-ago attack from a big cat. Scars on the outside as well as on the inside. She loves the big cats and realizes she needs to overcome her fear of them. She hopes she can do this at the Sanctuary. Another reason for coming back to her hometown, is that her parents were murdered when she was a child and the murder was never solved. Whoever killed them is still out there.
The Sanctuary is owned by the mother of the one (Blake) who Paradise feels turned his back on her at the worst time of her life. This led to her being sent away from her hometown. However, Paradise and Blake will be working together so they will have to learn to get along.
Things get crazy as soon as Paradise arrives. A dead woman is found in a horse trailer. She was murdered. Then, other things happen. Someone left the gate open to the hyenas and they are advancing on Blake. One thing after another happens and the local policeman seems a bit too big for his britches and has quite the attitude. He does not give attention to all the incidents that he should. He wants to believe Blake is doing all of this himself. Did I mention that before Paradise got to the Sanctuary that Blake's stepdad died due to a fall from the hayloft in the barn? He seldom had reason to go up there, and he'd had railings installed as a safeguard for his two young sons. There is someone wanting to purchase the Sanctuary, but Blake's mother, and his stepdad prior to his death turned the offer down. All these events bring bad publicity to the Sanctuary, and they make income from giving tours. Could all these things be done to put them out of business so they are forced to sell?
This story is full of suspense and action, with some romance. Well developed characters. Love the story line in this book!
I was given an advanced ecopy from the publisher, Thomas Nelson through Netgalley. I was under no obligation to leave a positive review.

Ambush by Colleen Coble, first in The Sanctuary series

Paradise returns to her hometown in Alabama after being gone for many years. She is going to serve as the vet for the wildlife sanctuary. Solving her parents’ murders is what drew her back. In the process of trying to get answers, she gets many other questions.

After the mysterious death of his stepfather, Blake left the military to help his mom raise his brothers and run the wildlife sanctuary. He is focused on his family and keeping everyone safe including Paradise. Paradise and Blake were high school sweethearts. They have to work together to protect the animals.

This suspenseful book is entertaining and engaging. It kept me guessing until the end. I thoroughly enjoyed the behind the scenes look of a wildlife park. I am looking forward for the next book in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the advanced reader copy. The options shared are my own.

Ambush by Colleen Coble is an engaging and emotional read that blends mystery, romance, and suspense. Paradise returns to her Alabama hometown to work as a veterinarian at a wildlife sanctuary, hoping to heal from a traumatic attack at her previous job. However, she’s also determined to uncover the truth behind her parents’ long-unsolved murders. Adding to the tension, she finds herself working alongside her first love, stirring up a whirlwind of emotions.

The novel weaves multiple storylines together—Paradise’s search for answers, the sanctuary’s unexplained sabotage, and her personal journey of healing. While some scenes are predictable, the plot twists keep the suspense high. A particularly heartbreaking moment occurs when Paradise reveals the consequences of being reported while in foster care, which may be triggering for some readers.

Overall, Ambush is a compelling story of resilience, love, and mystery, making it a great choice for fans of faith-based romantic suspense.

I really enjoyed this book about the wildlife preserve in southern US. Added to the interesting premise of the wildlife preserve was the mystery surrounded the death of the main characters parents. When it becomes apparent that the preserve if being targeted, the main characters need to unravel not only the past but the mystery surrounding the preserve and why someone wants it to fail. Colleen Coble is a good author who brings characters and plots alive. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Another riveting story to start a new series by Colleen Coble. Paradise lost her mother when she was young and went into foster care. When abuse was evident, a neighbor and boyfriend reported it and she wss removed. It was almost 15 years before she returned. Now as a Vet hired to work part time at the Wildlife Sanctuary, Paradise comes face to face with her past love. Blake helps his mother, Jenna run the sanctuary after the unexplained death of his stepfather.

Paradise has to come to terms with her past: the unsolved murder of her parents, family that didn't step up to help forcing her to foster care, and Blake. The Sanctuary is under fire from an unnamed source with accidents, damages, and bow a dead body. Colleen keeps the suspense level up and adequately deals with the romance to have Blake and Paradise reconnect to solve the mystery.

Although I received a free ARC from Net Galley and the publisher, all opinions are my own. A great read and now the dilemma of waiting for book 2!

Ambush is a definite must-read for suspense fans. The story centers around an animal sanctuary and someone isn't happy that the place is operating. Paradise Alden moves back home to take a job as the vet for The Sanctuary. Too bad her ex, Blake Lawson, works there. From page one, someone is sabotaging the Sanctuary. Blake and Paradise must figure out who wants to run the Sanctuary into the ground, and who would be capable of murder.

This story is exciting, action-packed, and full of heart. I always enjoy trying to solve the case right along with the characters. And Paradise and Blake make an interesting couple. The setting is fascinating with all of the different wild animals roaming about. Overall, this is a high-energy, intriguing read.

Colleen Coble is a wonderful writer.
She is automatic read for me.

Once again, Colleen Coble proves why her books are always best sellers in Christian fiction! Ambush is by turns terrifying then heart-wrenching then back to terrifying. As always, she weaves many different story threads into a masterful tapestry that wraps readers in until the final page is turned.

Paradise Alden's life has been a train wreck since her parents' murders. Dropped into foster care when her only living relatives refuse her care. she is placed in home after home where she is either neglected or abused. She learns early on that men are not to be trusted and that God must have been looking the other way all her life to allow the suffering she has endured. Now a veterinarian, she is on leave from her zoo job as she recovers from a jaguar attack that left her right arm scarred and weakened when she receives an offer to care for the animals at the Sanctuary Animal Shelter in her hometown of Nova Cambridge, Alabama. The Sanctuary is the one place she always felt needed and she hopes it is also the place she can get over her fear of the big cats. The only problem she sees is that she will have to work with her former boyfriend, Blake Anderson, on a daily basis as he is the shelter's official director. Can she work with the man who orchestrated her removal from a home she was tolerating in a town she loved to a home where she was in even more danger in a town where she knew no one? She hasn't even unpacked her car when a dead body is found on the property. As incident after incident piles up, is the Sanctuary under attack, or does someone want her as dead as her parents?

Blake Anderson gave up a lucrative career when his step-father dies. Someone has to help his mother run the Sanctuary and care for his much younger brothers. When Paradise walks back into his life, he sees her distrust and knows he deserves it, but the love he felt for her fifteen years ago is still there. As they battle activists, arsonists, and land developers, can he prove to her that he can be trusted with both her safety and her heart?

I loved so many things about this story. First, it is set in the same town with some of the same characters as Coble's Tupelo Grove books with Rick Acker. In fact Hez Webster from What We Hide is instrumental in finding information for Blake and Paradise. I also loved the second chance romance for Blake and Paradise, and the suspense is stellar. (Watch for the scene with Blake and the hyenas. Yikes!)

Readers who love suspense with a side of romance will love Ambush! Coble fans will not be disappointed, and new Coble readers will find a book they can't put down. If you get the chance, listen to the audio version. I thought the narrator did a great job!

When the mother of her high-school sweetheart invites her to join The Sanctuary Wildlife Preserve staff as the part-time veterinarian, Paradise Alden can't turn down the opportunity to find closure. Returning to Nova Cambridge, Alabama, after a 15-year absence requires emotional fortitude, and Paradise hopes that if she can find her parents’ murderer, maybe she can unlock healing in other areas of her life.

However, facing her first obstacle—Blake Anderson—might prove to be more than she can handle. Paradise takes the job knowing Blake helps his mom run The Sanctuary, but she’s not prepared for the bloom of attraction she still feels towards the one person who knew her the best in her troubled youth.

When Blake discovers his mom has hired Paradise Alden as the new vet, he has mixed feelings. He understands her resentment towards him but not her bitterness. Despite their 15-year-long separation, Blake has prayed for Paradise and hopes her return will bring her the peace she seeks.

But nothing at The Sanctuary is peaceful. Ever since his stepdad’s tragic death, Blake and his mom have faced one setback after another as they strive to build the wildlife park into a thriving business. And when a murdered woman shows up in a horse trailer from a neighboring ranch, the local detective wants to pin the crime on Blake.

Despite his misgivings, Blake and Paradise team up to find answers to her parents’ murders and the string of disasters besetting The Sanctuary. Will their quest drive them further apart or provide the healing that Paradise desperately seeks?

What I Loved About This Book

Colleen Coble continues to entertain readers with fast-paced suspense and twisty plots. Readers who struggle with trauma from their past will identify with Paradise as she struggles to come to terms with her chaotic childhood. Coble set Ambush near the fictional town of Nova Cambridge, AL. Readers who enjoyed her Tupelo Grove (written with Rick Aker) and Pelican Harbor books will appreciate the cameo appearances from those series.

AMBUSH The Sanctuary Book 1 by Colleen Coble & Rick Acker
This is an unusual story with a wild exotic animal sanctuary, (a first that I have found that particular plot) but it is very enjoyable well written story. This is a murder mystery, romantic suspense, drama and great characters. It is also a Christian fiction book. This is 5 stars.

I listened to the audio version of this story. Karen Peakes does a great job with the narration.
