An educational history of science, subtitled "Science's Biggest Mistakes About Astronomy and Physics," this book is intriguing and readily comprehensible, designed for grades 4-6, but any age can learn from it-even grandparents.
I am hyperventilating right now...so excited am I about this series, "Science Gets It Wrong".
I teach young children (6-9) and begin each year by talking about the fluidity of scientific knowledge, based on present day evidence and the sophistication of our tools for further observation. This leaves the door open for parents (in the Bible Belt) to negate anything I may present to them about the big bang theory or the theory of evolution.
I always use the example of the old belief that the Earth was the center of the Universe and tell them that Galileo was actually imprisoned by the church to prevent him from teaching otherwise. We also talk about poor Pluto.
This book hits the bulls-eye. Each topic is on a 2-page spread that is nicely designed. The text is suitable for upper elementary students (and advanced younger readers) and can easily be read aloud to and understood by younger students.
My dismay at reaching the final page turned to excitement when I saw that in addition to this book about astronomy and physics, there are three more in the series, covering geology and ecology, plants and animals, and the human body.
With a series called Science Gets It Wrong, you expect great things, and We're the Center of the Universe! delivers. This book emphasizes how science is an ever-changing subject; when new facts are discovered they change the light of old theories. We're the Center of the Universe! explains the history of scientific concepts, including mistakes and the evolution of their change. Science readers will love this book, which bridges history and science together seamlessly.
I really enjoyed this book and think kids will too. I think it perfectly shows how even science is not correct all the time, and they are always finding new things, or that things are not as we all way believed. The pictures and pages are bright and colorful leading to that "must pick this up" quality to entice the kids.
