Description
It's Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Rafael and his cousins are shopping in the busy Turkish market for the ingredients for their family's Sephardic celebration. The cousins' adventures require courage, teamwork, and help from some four-legged friends!
Advance Praise
"PreS-Gr 2--Three cousins in traditional Turkish garb meet their grandmother at a market in Istanbul to shop for food for Rosh Hashanah. Nona sends the young cousins with money to get some of the items. While they are gone, they feed some cats and encounter a bully who smashes one of their pomegranates. The bully is allergic to cats, starts sneezing, and runs into a barrel of fish scraps, bringing even more cats. Later that day, the family gathers at Nona's house for the holiday, and Nona reinforces the meaning of each of the foods on their plates. Basseri's charming story is peppered with Ladino words, and Özatalay's illustrations complement the text with details and many colorful hues in the clothing and furnishings of a Sephardic family in Turkey. Back matter includes a glossary of Ladino words, a history of Jewish life in Turkey, and other facts about Rosh Hashanah. VERDICT A solid addition to any collection to show the diversity in Jewish cultures."-School Library Journal

I recently read this beautifully illustrated book, and I loved it! It is filled with stunning and vibrant colors.
What truly sets this book apart is its deep connection to Sephardic culture, incorporating references to traditional foods and even snippets of the Ladino language. It’s a delightful journey that not only entertains but also educates readers about a rich heritage that deserves to be celebrated.
This book is perfect for families looking to explore and share cultural traditions, making it a wonderful addition to any bookshelf. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in celebrating diversity through literature!
With Rosh Hashanah starting this week (October 2024), this is an enjoyable book about a Rosh Hashanah celebration in Turkey. It is a simple plot about a family gathering food in the marketplace for the family meal, with some complications taking place, that of a bully teasing the kids in the family. But the cats get revenge. You'll get it when you read the book. The family meal looks might tasty, and I wish I could share, but we have our own family meal coming up! A Ladio glossary is included in the book. A fun children's book.
This is a good look at family and gathering items for Rosh Hashanah. But when the children are faced with a bully, we see them stand up for themselves, with some help from some friends.
Lovely illustrations too.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
What a beautiful story, accompanied by charming illustrations. I loved the way that it taught about the cultural significance of Rosh Hashanah and the food that's eaten for it.
I'm so pleased to see a child's book that focuses on the Sephardic Jews and how they celebrate Jewish holidays. It is a very good eye opener in that respect and the illustrations are charming. For me, perhaps as an adult, the story line felt a little contrived and wasn't very convincing. But it offers many opportunities for a parent and child to discuss what is happening, and after all, that is one of the reasons to read together, isn't it!
Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read this special book. I hope it finds its way into every synagogue library!
