Description

5th October 2024 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Guildford bombings by the IRA, one of the most egregious miscarriages of justice of the twentieth century. The Guildford Four endured 15 years behind bars for a crime they did not commit.  This book was central to the reopening of the case – this new edition contains startling new material, completely updated and revised.

In 1974, the lives of Carole Richardson, Paul Hill, Gerard Conlon, and Patrick Armstrong were forever changed when they were wrongly convicted of the Guildford and Woolwich pub bombings. The Guildford Four endured 15 years behind bars, serving the longest sentences ever imposed by an English judge for a crime they did not commit.

The only evidence against them was confessions they claimed were extracted through intimidation and violence. Three Surrey police officers were acquitted of malpractice in 1993, but this new edition of Time Bomb reveals there is testimony, never published, confirming far wider malpractice by Surrey Police.

Originally published in 1988, this is the book that exposed what is widely regarded as one of the most serious miscarriages of justice in recent British history. Through meticulous research and compelling evidence, the authors unravel the chilling parallel story of the men who actually did the bombings, the devastatingly professional London Active Service Unit, who carried out the 1974-75 IRA bombing campaign.

A Note From the Publisher

Profoundly relevant today, Michael Mansfield KC. In his new introduction identifies the case of the Guildford Four as essentially the prototype of the corruption and concealment scandals which have beset the UK, from the Stephen Lawrence case through to the Post Office scandal, and asks how we can galvanise reform.

Grant McKee and Ros Franey made three acclaimed and influential documentaries on the Guildford case, which helped to get it re-opened. Grant McKee became a senior producer and controller of programmes at Yorkshire Television. He died in 2019. Ros Franey is a writer and producer.
