Description
Tongue-in-cheek time travel adventure to 1776
Mel, our narrator (no last name because you would recognize it as the same as his pretty-well-known Dad's—and he'd prefer to just leave it at that) and two schoolmates are left behind at school during Christmas break. When an iPhone app malfunctions, the kids are sent back in time to 1776. And that dead body with a gunshot wound lying right in front of them is General George Washington. But Mel, our history buff, knows that Washington can't die before crossing the Delaware and winning the Revolutionary War. Who killed General Washington? What will happen to America if Washington is really dead? Will there be any America for them to go home to? And can they put things right before the power drains out on their smartphones or will they be left behind in 1776?
Mel's humorous account traces the whirlwind time travel adventure, full of dangerous encounters with Hessians; persuading wary farm kids that he and his schoolmates are not a part of witchcraft plot; the tedious journey to Philadelphia; but also a fascinating encounter with Dr. Benjamin Franklin, electricity expert; a mysterious Hessian carrying a Luger (no Lugers in 1776!); crossing the Delaware with a ragtag Continental Army; front, left, and center at the Battle of Trenton while texting an irate teacher back home. High jinx and history made easy and fun.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
David Potter developed a love for American history as a boy growing up near Morristown, New Jersey, where George Washington spent the winters of 1777 and 1779. He was inspired to write The Left Behinds and the iPhone That Saved George Washington while taking his children to the annual Christmas reenactment of Washington's Crossing The Delaware - and noticing how many people were using their smartphones.
