Description

Many believe that life in medieval London was a completely terrible existence. In the fairy tales of Carla and the Wolf we see that life for at least one London teen was not so awful. Every morning for Carla is about the same and she liked it that way. She woke up before the cockerel and gathered water and firewood. Carla would make a simple breakfast for her little brother and mother and then begin her real morning chores, however harsh this life might seem to a modern observer, she loved it. That was until she lost her heart and found the Great Black Wolf. Carla is unlike every other girl you will read about outside of fairytales. When she loses her heart, it is misplaced somewhere outside of her body. She makes the unlikely acquaintance with the Great Black Wolf. He appears to Carla as a beautiful beast as tall as a full grown man and covered in shiny black fur. On meeting the wolf many of the basic chores Carla use to enjoy take on fantastic features. The Wolf is also an odd mystery Carla attempts to solve. Medieval London is a wonderful backdrop for this unique fairytale. Carla begins to have fantastic adventures with the talkative and self-proclaimed timeless and indestructible Great Black Wolf. The reader is challenged to discover if there is a reason that everyone perceives The Great Black Wolf differently, if he really is a Wolf? Carla mother sees a great shaggy dog, which is not much different than a wolf, but why does her little brother see or hear nothing when the wolf is involved? Carla grows in spirit and determination right before our eyes with the wolf as her friend and companion, but is he her friend or an evil curse? Few modern fairytales are written which honestly tell the truth of daily life in the medieval period, without casting an overly critical or judgmental eye. In this fairytale both the youngest and eldest readers will be able to follow, enjoy, and learn about Carla’s growth and the fantastic Great Black Wolf. When Carla and her family take the wolf to Sunday Mass, she and her mother will not be the only ones waiting to see if anything interesting happens. Carla and the Wolf is a Modern take on classical fairytales.
