Description

From the million-copy bestselling author of The Lost Bookshop

Nestled among the cobblestone streets of Compiègne, there existed a bakery unlike any other.

Rumours were whispered through the town that its pastries offered a taste of magic, chasing away the darkest of sorrows. Just one bite of a croissant might bring luck, unlock a precious memory or reveal hidden longings.

But dark clouds were looming on the horizon…

For Edie Lane, a recipe for disaster doesn’t require that many ingredients. Take an unhealthy amount of wishful thinking and a sprinkle of desperation and that’s how Edie left everything behind in Ireland for her dream job at a bakery in Paris. Except the bakery isn’t in Paris – and neither is Edie.

This might not be where Edie intended to be but she soon realizes it's exactly where she needs to be…

Evie Woods has done it again!

She sweeps readers into the magical surrealism that marries the past and present into a thought-provoking tale.

An easygoing read that provides warmth and heart reminding us all that the past is an integral part of ourselves. Edie searches for a new life, unknowing that the seeds of it are already inside her, waiting for her to nurture them.

Set in a small providential Persian village, the characters come to life while welcoming you into their hearts

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods is an enchanting story set in the cobblestoned streets of Compiegne. It follows Edie Lane, who leaves behind her life in Ireland while chasing a dream that doesn’t go as planned. Edie finds herself in a charming town with a bakery rumored to serve more than just baked goods. This book is full of heartfelt emotion, while finding magic in unexpected places. I absolutely adored this cozy read!

Having put her own plans on hold to care for her dying mother, Edith (Edie) is seeking a fresh start in Paris by accepting a management position in a bakery. Much to her dismay, she discovers she misunderstood the location. In fact, the bakery is located on the Rue de Paris in Compiegne, a village about one hour north of her dream destination. Edie is determined to stay despite the aloof owner, the shabby apartment, and the mysterious activity in the basement that produces abundant, delicious breads and pastries. As the story unfolds, Edie begins to heal her grief over the loss of her mother, gaining some clarity about what she genuinely wants in life.

Some of the most interesting aspects of the novel involve the history of Compiegne. especially its role in World Wars I and II. This thread was unexpected and provided richness and depth to the storyline.

Overall, this is a heart-warming book that embraces the magical realism genre that the author is known for. I found it enjoyable, entertaining, and informative.

My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Edith is ready for a change at 29. Her mom died and she was her carer during that time period. She put her life on hold and feels a bit lost. She's accepted a job as an assistant manager at a bakery in Paris. So she's going to move from Ireland and leave her father behind.

She gets to Paris and realizes she's made a mistake. The bakery is actually on the Rue de Paris in a town about an hour north of Paris. She starts work and things look bleak, as her provided apartment is a small cold attic, her boss is cold, and it feels like the whole place is haunted. However, she meets a man named Hugo, makes a friend named Nicole, and finds a mysterious recipe book in the floorboards of her apartment.

A light heart-warming read!

3.75⭐️. This started off feeling like a book solely based on grief and making decisions based on grief; but what I soon realized, it was about living your life in spite of your grief and coming to terms with how life can change immediately. This felt like a really beautiful history lesson, on top of a magical romance, and clandestine journey of self discovery.

Loved the story... connects a bit of magic, family drama, delicious baked goods and beautiful scenery. I've come to expect this in a Gaughan / Woods novel, and she doesn't disappoint here. Would have loved to learn more about why the vanilla worked (won't reveal the secrets here!) but I am totally good just going with it. Solid characters. Lovely setting. I'm all caught up on the author's books now.

With it's charming characters and impeccable sense of place, readers will surely fall hard for Woods most recent offering.

We follow the grieving Edith Lane as she is called to move from her Irish home, impulsively taking a job in the bustling and romantic patisseries of Paris. Fate has other plans, and much to her dismay, our lost heroine finds herself in a town and bakery immensely different than her brain had conjured. As Edith navigates her unlikely new life, she is met with heartwarming characters and unsettling mysteries!

I truly adored this story. It's sweet and light with just enough depth to make it meaningful. It's got some heart-wrenching historical elements that drive the mystery but the characters and ultimate outcome balance the hard human truths nicely.

This will be a sweet little treat for those looking for a heartwarming tale with some depth.

If you're looking for a book that will sweep you off your feet, make you feel all the feels, and leave you with a sense of wonder, 'The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris' by Evie Woods is an absolute must-read. This enchanting novel has everything you could possibly want: romance, mystery, history, a touch of magic, and even a ghost. In fact, it is hands down the best book I have read this year—so much so that it felt as if it was written just for me.

For fans of feel-good romance (think Abby Jimenez's heartwarming style), this book delivers a sweet and tender love story that will melt your heart without ever crossing into anything inappropriate. It's the perfect blend of light and love, full of moments that will make you smile, sigh, and possibly even get a little teary-eyed.

But this book isn't just about romance. It masterfully weaves in elements of historical fiction, with a fascinating glimpse into World War II that adds depth and richness to the story without overshadowing the main plot. The historical timeline, though brief, helps to unravel the mystery of a magical bakery, its ghostly inhabitant, and the misunderstood owner who is struggling to hold it all together. Trust me, don't let the mention of WWII scare you off—this subplot enhances the story and makes the magical elements feel all the more meaningful.

The ghost and mystery add an intriguing layer to the narrative, keeping you hooked and wanting to know more as the secrets of the bakery slowly unfold. There's just enough magic to spark your imagination, but it’s never too fantastical. It’s the kind of magic that fits seamlessly into the story, pushing the plot forward without ever feeling out of place.

What makes this book even more special is Evie Woods' ability to balance all these elements in a way that feels effortless. You’ll find yourself completely immersed in the world she creates, with every page offering new layers of wonder and excitement.

I can already tell that this is a book I’ll return to again and again. If you love a story that’s heartwarming, mysterious, and just a little bit magical, "The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris" is the perfect choice. I truly believe everyone should read this book at least once—and, like me, you’ll likely find yourself revisiting it time and time again. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Edie travels from Ireland to Paris after she accepts a job at a bakery. All doesn’t go according to plan, and Edie isn’t quite sure what she’s getting herself into. Follow her adventure as she uncovers a mystery and people who just might change her life.

I definitely didn't want this lovely gem to end! One of the best stories I've read for this year!
Lots of twists and turns and yes even a bit of romance. Most enjoyable was the bit of magic that was added.
I really enjoyed the Paris setting for this novel. The way the author described this beautiful book, I felt like I was there!
I couldn't put the book down it was so good!
Told from the protagonists point of view is what I enjoyed even more. I felt that I could connect to her so much better.
I hated to see this story end. This is one of those stories that will stay with you for a long time to come.
5 stars for the excellent writing and the entertainment and for keeping me engaged all the way through.
I highly recommend.
May I say that the cover makes me want to pop right into the picture Mary Poppins style? It's that inviting.
My thanks for a copy of this book I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.

I first discovered Evie Woods in late July of 2024 and she has immediately become an auto-buy author for me. This book was EXACTLY what I needed to soothe my soul coming off the busyness of the holidays. It’s that perfect blend of magical realism, historical fiction, and sweet romance. I was so moved by the plucky determination of the FMC, Edith, and the back story of Madame Moreau was heartbreakingly beautiful. Even our MMC Hugo was on a journey of self-discovery. Thank you to NetGalley and to Harper 360 for the opportunity to review this advanced copy.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it had that element that I was looking for and enjoyed from this type of book. The characters were everything that I was looking for and enjoyed the overall feel of this world. Evie Woods wrote this strongly and was glad I got to read this.

Enjoyable story centered around saving a bakery in a quaint French town. Some history, found family, and a little bit of mystery. Without this being set in France, I would not have enjoyed as much. A quick, easy read to escape to France!

This was a beautifully written heartwarming story. I felt like I could totally escape in this. The only thing I did not enjoy was just that there was so much French language. As someone who does not understand French, I found it distracting. I will read more by this author.

have no words to describe this book. It will probably be one of the best books of 2025. It’s simply magical. It hooks you from the start and you can’t put it down until you’re forced because you’ve reached the last page.

Edith is quite funny, smart, and determined. Hugo is smart and a bear. They’re both dreamers in their own way. I just love the way their relationship develops and how intertwined it becomes with Madame Moreau’s bakery and the story behind it. The supporting characters are the best. I loved Manu, he’s such a sweetheart and Nicole, is a friend any girl should have. Last but not least, is the touch of magic in the story. My heart felt for Pierre and what he did taking care of Genevieve and her mom and how he kept to his promise even in spirit. That was amazing.

Seriously, add this book to your auto buy. You won’t want to miss it!

Lovely feel good story about a young woman who goes to work in a French bakery. She thought it was in Paris, but instead it was in the small historic town of Compiegne. There are secrets, history, romance and a bit of the mystical involved.

I really loved the storyline to this book, but felt the execution fell flat in some cases. For those reading it as a cozy mystery they will probably like it more than those who came for the magic. The one point that drove me nuts though was that the main character was only 29 years old. She uses TikTok, but kept portraying herself as a washed up spinster who wasted her life. When I first started reading I thought she must be around her early 40s, but when I found out her age it bugged me the rest of the book.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris was a good book by Evie Woods. I have read Wood’s books in the past and this book reminds me a lot her previous works. It was full of magic and intrigue. The characters were complex and experience growth throughout. The story is told from multiple perspectives and multiple time periods. The description of food was great and the setting was charming. This book truly immerses the reader in French culture. I wish I spoke French so I could truly understand the French spoken throughout the book. Overall, this was an enjoyable read.

After doing a bit of research, I discovered that The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris was a self-published novel by Evie Gaughan in 2014. It’s slightly difficult to find but it IS possible. This book is now being published traditionally under the pen name Evie Woods, as she has found quite a bit of success with her 2023 novel The Lost Bookshop. As a reader who enjoys fantasy and magical realism, I enjoyed The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris.

Edith is making a fresh start after accepting a position in a Parisian bakery. Except after landing on French soil, Edith realizes that the bakery is actually quite a distance from the city of Paris. Settling into the idea that she will not be in Paris proper, Edith makes her home in an attic above the family-owned bakery in which she works. She gets to know the family who has owned the bakery for a few generations, as well as making friends in the little village. Through the process, Edith discovers a mystery.

If you enjoy reading the French language (there’s not really any translations when French is spoken in the book), a Parisian setting, and a bit of magical realism, this is great choice. Although the ending is a bit predictable and contrived, I found the story compelling and historically relevant, and the characters delightful.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris is a heartwarming and magical tale about Edie Lane, who moves to France in search of a fresh start, only to stumble upon something far more extraordinary than she ever imagined.

Expecting to work as an assistant manager in a charming Parisian bakery, Edie is in for a surprise when the bakery is actually in Compiegne, not Paris. Instead of the picturesque experience she envisioned, she finds herself in a rundown apartment, working under a grumpy boss, and feeling more lost than ever.

As the story unfolds, we meet a cast of endearing characters, each with their own struggles and dreams. Through a touch of magic and unexpected friendships, The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris beautifully illustrates how sometimes, with a little help, we can all find our way and how within each of us lies a seed of potential, just waiting for the right moment to bloom.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris has to be one of my favorite reads thus far this year. First thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this as an ARC reader from Netgalley. I voluntarily chose to read this. I found this book to have a beautiful story line. It was immersive. I don’t speak a lick of French, so I found myself struggling a bit. But this is a book about Paris, haha! The MFC was very likable and relatable. I found myself youtubing, researching references and places for better understanding. Every character that was mention, made sense and brought richness to the story line. I loved the description of the bakery/bakery items! The were twists that I didn’t anticipate. The book flowed and read easily. Overall I would recommend this to those who are fans of historical fiction, mystery and romance. Really great and fun read! You can tell the author really did their research. This is a 5 star read for me.

Do you need a read that is on the lighter side?

Imagine taking a job thinking it’s in Paris, France and then realizing when arriving it’s an hour north by train. This is exactly what happened to Edie Lane. At 29, Edie needed a change, so taking a job at a bakery in France was what she decided to do. What she didn’t expect was all that she would encounter. A cranky boss who is demanding! Will this be the change Edie needs? Can Edie make the most out of her new job despite the challenges? What will she discover?

A heartwarming story of new beginnings! I loved how this author connected the past with the present! Reading about all the delicious pastries, breads, and the famed hot chocolates makes you want to make them! What a fun and entertaining read that transports you to France! A great book for book clubs as it will lead to many great discussions!

Adorable book set in the modern day on a small town an hour outside of Paris. Our young protagonist Edith has decided to take on a role that will get her out of Scotland to help her find herself and her purpose after the passing of her mother. Baking is in her blood and so it doesn't seem like such a leap to take a job as an assistant manager at a local cafe. Once she arrives she quickly realizes that maybe this job isn't exactly what she thought it would be.

I enjoyed the brisk movement of the plot as well as the continuous introduction of new characters in a way that made sense and wasn't overwhelming to keep everyone straight. Evie Woods books are adorable because they are easy to read and you can nearly count on a happy ending, whatever that might be.

Wow… this was such a great book, I don’t know where to start. Edith moves to Paris to pursue her dreams while managing a bakery. When she arrives in Paris, she discovers she’s misunderstood the location and must travel to a small town to find the actual bakery she was hired to work at. Edith must adjust to her new life, realign her expectations, and find a way to make things work. This book is magical, perfectly ties together the past and present, and shows that love is stronger than anyone can imagine. Thank you NetGalley and Harper 360 for the eARC!

Edie Lane arrives in Paris to answer an ad for a bakery manager. What unfolds is a story of survival and magic. A magic only the truly determined can provide. It is a promise made in a time of such violence and destruction. It is the joy of giving friends and neighbors a place to come together as community. It is a promise that spins its magic in the lives of two young people in this day and lets the ghosts of yesterday have peace.

After a slight mix up, Edith Lane finds that her new assistant manager position is at a vintage bakery in Compiegne France, and not in Paris like she initially thought. The bakery owner doesn’t make Edith’s new position all that easy, but she is determined to start a new life for herself, after leaving behind heartbreak in Ireland. As she spends more time at the bakery, she starts to find friendship, purpose, and the promise of a new relationship. But there are unexplained mysteries and secrets happening at the bakery, that will put Edith’s new start, to the test.

I was immediately hooked by the first line of The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris. I also think I gained 10 pounds while reading this book! The bakery setting is perfect and I loved reading about all of the delicious pastries and breads that are served there, and the legacy of its past.

Woods does a remarkable job of bringing together historical fiction, magical realism, mystery, and romance in this story. I really seem to connect with her writing, and I love seeing how her stories unfold. The way she connects the past and the present is done really well, and there is some history shared about the Romani Holocaust during WWII, that I didn’t know happened during that time.

I loved the relationships that Edith built throughout the story, and the way her character grew and began to heal from the grief she has been carrying. The people of Compiegne are endearing, and I enjoyed how they came together to help one another and to fight for the bakery.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris is my third book by Woods, and I have not been disappointed by any of the ones I have read. If you love a cozy French setting, starting over in life, romance, mystery, and a bit of the supernatural, then I would definitely recommend The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris.

I fell enchanted with Evie's prior "The Lost Bookshop," so this was a must-read for me!

Edie Lane's journey in Evie Woods' charming novel is one of discovery, resilience, and the magic of community. Edie arrives in Paris to manage a bakery, but quickly discovers she's been misdirected to a small town an hour outside of the city. As she navigates her new life, realigns her expectations, and finds ways to make it work, Edie uncovers a world of warmth, kindness, and the joy of connection. The story is a heartwarming tale of new beginnings, expertly woven together with themes of love, loss, and redemption.

Woods' writing has a captivating quality that makes you want to settle in with a warm cup of hot chocolate and get lost in the world she's created. The setting of a small town in France is vividly brought to life, complete with delicious pastries, freshly baked breads, and charming characters. The author's use of magic is understated yet effective, adding depth and richness to the narrative. As Edie's story unfolds, you'll find yourself swept up in her journey, rooting for her as she faces challenges and discovers new passions. With its lighthearted tone, engaging plot, and uplifting message, this book is a perfect read for anyone looking for a feel-good, escapist tale.

Paris, bakery and romance what more can you ask for! Just what mysteries are going on in the basement of the bakery. Can it be that someone from the past is baking bread or is there a more resent change in the place. You will love this book!

What a delightful story! Evie Woods has the uncanny ability to bring to life stories that are realistic as well as magical. Her writing style reminds me much of Joanne Harris (Chocolat, The Girl with No Shadow). This story brings strong characters, a storyline that is well- developed, full of intrigue, a healthy dose of history, the importance of family and friends, the beauty of a small French town, the delight of warm breads and delicious pastries, a main character who is both eager and reticent to allow her true self to flourish, and a love that is waiting to blossom. Each book that I read by Evie Woods seems to be even stronger and more magical than the last and I find myself reading slower and slower towards the end because I'm just not ready to leave the characters I've come to care for or the wonderful setting. If you love France, wonderful little bakeries, love, music, history, and mystery, then please read this book. You'll be transported into the story in no time and, like me, you likely will want to linger there a while.

✨What it is about:
Edie Lane left everything behind in Ireland for a once-in-a-lifetime job at a bakery in Paris. Except, thanks to a mistranslation, the bakery is not in Paris, and neither is Edie.
The tiny town of Compiègne, complete with its local bakery on the Rue de Paris, holds many secrets. This might not be where Edie intended to be, but it's not long before she realises it's exactly where she needs to be…✨

💭My thoughts:
A magical bakery in France, imagine that! I LOVE books where food is incorporated in any way shape or form, so I was immediately attracted to this story. Super charming and full of little secrets it is short, but sweet. It is a cozy mystery read that was a tad predictable, but with some interesting plot lines, that kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed the bits of history sprinkled throughout the story, and the overall heartwarming feeling it gave me. I wish I would have had a warm croissant and a magical hot chocolate while reading it, as it would have been the perfect combination. If you enjoy lighthearted mysteries, with elements of romance, as well as Parisian settings, this is just what you might be looking for.

This book was so cutesy and charming! I found myself smiling while reading it and not wanting to put it down. ✨

I absolutely loved the writing. Such good imagery, I felt like I was part of the quaint little town and wanted the pastries and bread so bad lol 😆

This book is full of unexpected friendships, romance, grief, history, and a little bit of magic 💫

Jumps back between past and present and some WWII history/ experiences which I really enjoyed.

Definitely more of a slow paced comfort read that will put a smile on your face and make you want a fresh croissant 🥐

A sweet story of Edie, who moves from Ireland to Paris after the death of her mother. At first, disappointed to not be in Paris proper, Edie learns to love the little bakery, it's owners and the mystery surrounding it. She makes good friends, a community and a boyfriend as well. An easy read that moves along quickly. Thanks to NetGalley, Ms Woods & HarperCollins360 for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

First a huge and enthusiastic thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to review an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I had no doubts that I was going to adore this book from the jump. I love Evie Woods/Gaughan and I have lived in a small French town outside of Paris, so this is exactly my kind of novel. Typical to Woods’ style, the Irish protagonist is looking for a way to reconnect with herself and find her place in the world, and through a seemingly impossible manner, she comes to work in a magical bakery outside of Paris. I loved every detail of this novel from her crying in the bathroom at Gare du Nord (so relatable) to the very end where we see her truly transform her life and prospects. Highly recommend to all!!

Compiegne, France - 1940s and Present Day

In the ancient town of Compiegne, there was a bakery that seemed to give a magical reaction to all who entered it. It was rumored that there was a secret ingredient that the baker added to his creations that made people recall old memories, bring luck, or open up their hearts to something hidden within.

Edith (Edie) Lane is almost thirty, and, after caring for her mother who passed away a year ago, finds herself rudderless with no idea what to do with herself. So she surprises even herself when she answers an advertisement to become an assistant manager for a small bakery in Paris. Leaving Ireland, Edie anticipates the excitement of living in the City of Lights, and moving on with her life. But upon arrival, Edie discovers that the shop is not in Paris, but on rue de Paris in Compiegne, an hour north of Paris!

Upon arrival in Compiegne, Edie is met by a young boy named Manu who escorts her to the bakery, La Boulangerie et Patisserie de Compiegne. There she meets the present owner, Madame Moreau, and is set up in a small attic apartment over the shop. Confused, but determined to work through it all, Edie settles into the running of the small bakery, with strict orders that she is not to venture into the basement where all of the baking is done. Only Madame Moreau and Manu seem to be the ones working there. One night she ventures down to the small kitchen to make herself some hot chocolate, finds a bottle of a vanilla mixture, adds this to her drink, and then seems to feel more confident in her new life.

Edie's new life is as unexpected as it is different from her old life in Ireland. But the little shop oozes mystery as Edie explores more. She learns more of Madame Moreau's past, as well as stories about the man who was her father. Is this the life Edie had in mind? Will her future be here? The people she meets, and the stories she learns, as well as the magic of the little bakery will answer these questions.

THE MYSTERIOUS BAKERY ON RUE DE PARIS is another magical tale by Evie Woods that had me wanting more. Her innovative story and endearing, sometimes complex characters will keep readers riveted. Don't miss this terrific novel.

Edith sees an advertisement for an assistant manager at a bakery in what she thinks is Paris. She leaves Ireland to take the job only to find out it is in little town called Compiègne. There she struggles with her self-esteem as the owner of a baker is quite taciturn. She meets Hugo who she falls for immediately until she finds out his company is trying to buy the block where the bakery resides. As she tries to save the bakery, she makes piece with the owner, finds her voice and finds love.

I want to thank NetGalley and One More Chapter Publishers for the ARC of The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris in exchange for an honest review.
The story starts with Edie getting a new job in a foreign country. She goes to the wrong bakery, meets her boss at the new bakery who is grumpy and mean, and her sleeping quarters are practically the size of a closet. Everything seems to be going wrong, and she questions her decision to come. As the days move on Edie meets new people and starts to settle in at work. Edie starts to make friends and begins to see the beauty in the town of Compiegne. The bakery however holds a secret. One that Edie wants to uncover!

This book is tender and warm. There are themes of love, loss, friendships and family. A fun and cozy!

This is a well written book about a bakery in a town an hour away from Paris. The story stretches from WWII to the present day, with an interesting paranormal twist.
Edie left her Irish home to work in a bakery, when she gets there she can’t figure out who the master baker is. She accidentally discovers some very special vanilla and learns about the bakery in WWII. When she decides to spy on the overnight bakery, she’s in for quite a surprise!
Don’t read this one on an empty stomach, the descriptions of the bread and baked goods are very descriptive!

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley, I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

What If a Pastry Could Change Your Life? 🥐💫
Have you ever bitten into something so delicious it felt… magical? What if that magic was real? In The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris, Evie Woods whisks us away to a charming French town where pastries do more than delight the taste buds—they just might hold the power to heal hearts, unlock secrets, and change lives.

But for Edie Lane, magic is the last thing on her mind when she trades her life in Ireland for what she believes is her dream job in Paris. Except—plot twist!—she’s not in Paris at all. Instead, she finds herself in Compiègne, a sleepy yet enchanting town with an extraordinary little bakery that’s about to change everything.

A Bakery Like No Other 🍞✨
The heart of this novel is the bakery itself—whispered about in hushed tones, rumored to hold secrets within its flour-dusted walls. Locals believe that each pastry has a purpose: a bite of brioche might bring a lost memory, while a delicate éclair could nudge fate in the right direction. Woods’ descriptions are so rich and immersive that you’ll practically smell the butter melting into warm croissants. (Warning: Do not read on an empty stomach! 😂)

This mysterious bakery hidden in the archives of history with its important fantasy element produces necessary breads and other fine baked goods for the community but its unlikely future is at stake. As the opposing sides collide, the mysterious events come into focus involving the whole town. I loved the historical significance and the present day reactions Evie Woods you are the best.

Thank you NetGalley and Harper 360 for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have truly loved Evie Woods’ first two books so was immensely excited to be able to read the Mysterious Bakery. While this one feels just a touch lighter and more magical/less magical realism than the first two, I still adore her ability to weave multiple timelines into something cozy and comforting. I love Edith’s journey and while it’s a bit superficial and trope-y (more so than her other books), I understood and felt connected and enjoyed seeing her journey through. While I think it’s safe to say it wasn’t my favorite of Woods’ books so far, it was still a beautiful story I couldn’t put down and felt so comforted reading. I recommend it to anyone with a love of France, pastries, and watching a character find their voice.

This novel does include a little of everything from mystery to romance, all set in a wonderful bakery in France. Edith (Edie) needs to redefine her life and finds a job at a Paris bakery or so she thinks. Once she arrives in Paris, Edie realizes that her job is actually in a small town and the bakery is located on the Rue de Paris. Throughout the book, French phrases are interjected along with some history of World Wars I and II, which will make readers feel they are part of the culture and history. Edith finds new friends, a potential love interest, secrets about the bakery and begins to feel at home. The only problem is that the bank may foreclose on the bakery causing her new friends to lose their business and their home. Will Edie be able to help them and will she be able keep her new life moving forward? I read the novel in one day because I could not wait to discover the answers to these questions. I highly recommend this very interesting novel.

"From the million-copy bestselling author of The Lost Bookshop.

But dark clouds were looming on the horizon...

For Edie Lane, a recipe for disaster doesn't require that many ingredients. Take an unhealthy amount of wishful thinking and a sprinkle of desperation and that's how Edie left everything behind in Ireland for her dream job at a bakery in Paris. Except the bakery isn't in Paris - and neither is Edie.

This might not be where Edie intended to be but she soon realizes it's exactly where she needs to be..."

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris is a whimsical, heartwarming story. Edie is 29 and feels she has not started her life yet. She answers an ad to work in a French bakery and leaves Ireland even though she barely speaks French.
There is mystery and magic with the bakery and Edie is very curious. She finds a cause to fight for and finds herself in the process.
There is an old fashioned flavor to this book and I really enjoyed reading it.

When Edith’s mother passed away, and she needed a new start in life, she found a job at a bakery in Paris — or what she thought was Paris. She ended up in a small town outside of Paris working in a bakery full of mysteries and a ghost. There Edith found herself, a cause worth fighting for, and a man she could love. The Mysterious Bakery on Rue devParis, by Evie Woods, is not my typical genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was able to read an ARC on #NetGalley.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris was an engaging and fast read, full of mouth-watering pastries and hot chocolate, lovable characters, and Author Evie Gaughan's classic touch of whimsy and magic. The story felt more personal, the writing style and plot more simple, and the narrator more young--which initially felt odd and now makes a lot more sense that I realize it was first published in 2014! 🥐🥐

Many thanks to NetGalley, Harper 360, Harper UK, One More Chapter for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest book by Evie Woods. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!

Edie Lane is grieving the loss of her mother, and has left everything behind in Ireland for a once-in-a-lifetime job at a bakery in Paris. Except, thanks to a mistranslation, the bakery is not in Paris, and neither is Edie. The tiny town of Compiègne, complete with its local bakery on the Rue de Paris, holds many secrets. This might not be where Edie intended to be but it's not long before she realizes it's exactly where she needs to be

Evie Woods has done it again, and created a magical world that you won't want to leave. This time it's a bakery in France, and the food descriptions will leave you hungry and needing pastries - and hot chocolate! Just who is baking all these delicious treats? Is there magic in the hot chocolate? This book is sweet and heartwarming, as Evie makes new friends and works to keep the magic alive. I appreciated how there were French words and phrases but enough information was given to decipher without constantly looking up the translation.

Edie needed a change. She decided to pack up and leave Ireland for a job at a bakery in Paris France, after a short phone interview, where it seemed the only requirement was the applicant had to be fluent in English.. Things aren't how she expected when she arrived. The bakery isn't in Paris, it's in a small town outside Paris, on the street Rue de Paris.

She is not allowed in the basement. Her new boss doesn't seem to like her. Her room in the attic is cramped and cold. She finds herself wondering if she made a mistake. Being determined, she decides to stay. There have to be answers to why she isn't allowed downstairs, and how does the bread get out to the streets if not through the front door?

Edie begins to make friends with the customers, her boss, and her boss's grandson- the delivery boy. She soon begins to find herself feeling for a man who visits town regularly, but lives in Paris. Her decisions are finally coming to some good for her. Until... there is something happening in the basement.

I can't believe this book is over 300 pages, it was over way to soon. I hope there are more and this becomes a series. No doubt a 5 star book I intend to read again!

I was given the opportunity to read the novel by NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes the path to healing starts with a wrong turn—and a mysterious bakery.

What began as a story steeped in grief quickly became something much more: a heartfelt tale about healing, self-discovery, and finding joy even in the unexpected. The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods is a beautiful, cozy blend of magical realism, historical intrigue, and quiet romance.

After putting her life on hold to care for her dying mother, Edie sets off to Paris in search of a fresh start—only to realize her new bakery job isn’t in Paris but in the quaint village of Compiègne. Despite the disappointment, Edie chooses to stay, and what unfolds is a charming, mysterious journey filled with warm bread, ghostly whispers, and a town with a deep, rich history.

The historical threads—particularly Compiègne’s role in both World Wars—were unexpected and fascinating, adding weight and depth to the narrative. Django Reinhardt fans, take note: you’ll be delightfully surprised by how he fits into the story.

This book is sweet and light with just enough emotional depth to linger after the final page. A soft, enchanting tale about living life with grief rather than despite it. Evie Woods once again delivers magical realism with heart and meaning.

This book made me cry—in all the best ways. While some parts might feel a bit clichéd, I actually appreciate them! Edith, a 29-year-old woman living in Ireland, feels completely lost after the passing of her mother. In an effort to honor her, she decides to take a bold step that’s completely out of character—so much so that you’ll find yourself asking, who is this woman? She moves to another country...

Edith finds herself in a quaint, charming town on the outskirts of France, where she stumbles upon a bakery with an intriguing mystery—no one has ever seen the baker! As secrets begin to unravel, Edith discovers much more than she expected. This heartwarming story shows how an act of kindness or a fresh pastry can unlock long-forgotten memories. With themes of self-love and friendship, this book captivated me from start to finish. I loved every moment of it.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods is the kind of book that pulls you in and wraps you up in its magic. It’s got everything romance, history, a bit of mystery, and just the right touch of the supernatural.

Edie Lane is looking for a fresh start, but when she arrives in France, she realizes she’s made a mistake, her new job isn’t in Paris, but in a small village an hour north. Her new home is less than glamorous, her boss is distant, and the bakery she’s managing has secrets of its own. But as Edie settles in, she discovers unexpected friendships, a bit of history woven into the town’s past, and maybe even a little magic hidden in the flour and sugar.

This book is heartfelt, cozy, and just a little mysterious, perfect if you love stories that mix real-life emotions with a touch of something special. If you’re in the mood for a warm, enchanting read, this one’s for you.

Edie, an American, accepts a job in a French bakery thinking it is in Paris. Wrong! It is on Rue de Paris in a small town north of France. The owner is gruff and makes it clear that the basement baking space is off limits. Edie is to stay in the shop or her attic quarters. Edie decides to stick it out. Then the strange night sounds in the basement space begin. Who is baking all the wonderful breads and treats? There are mysteries to solve. This was a charming read.

Woods' masterful blend of historical fiction and magical realism creates a world so vivid, you'll swear you can hear the distant chime of church bells and feel the warmth of the morning sun on your face.

Her transformation is as gradual and beautiful as bread rising in the oven, and you can't help but root for her every step of the way.

The true magic of Woods' writing, however, lies in her portrayal of the quaint street and its inhabitants. Edie thought she would be working and living in Paris, France. Her French is a bit rusty, though, and that’s not where she ends up. She’s determined to make the best of the situation. She meets a guy, makes new friends, tries new foods, comes out of her shell a little more each day, tries new experiences, and discovers a bit of magic.

A lovely story about following one’s dreams, not giving up when they aren’t quite what you were expecting, new beginnings, friendship, fighting for what’s right, and more.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Loved, loved, loved The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods. Once I began reading found it difficult to put it down. The mysterious bakery with its history is the perfect setting for the plot. Add in very interesting characters , a little romance , and a “villain”. This is one book I would read a second time!

This book is a beautifully written, engaging story of Edith, a young Irish woman grieving the loss of her mother to cystic fibrosis and at a loss for what to fo with her life now that she is no longer primarily her mother’s caregiver.. Desperate to do something more exciting than continuing to be a waitress, on a whim she accepts what she believes to be a position as an assistant manager at a bakery in Paris. When she arrives in Paris, however, she discovers that the bakery is not in Paris, the city of lights and dreams, but rather on the Rue de Paris in a small French village more than an hour’s train ride away.

The bakery’s products are fantastic and beloved by its patrons. The owner, Mme. Moreau, is chatty with customers but gruff and brusque with Edith. Edith is strictly forbidden from ever entering the locked basement, where the baking is done, or meeting the baker, and she is extremely curious as to reason for the secrecy. A skinny teenage boy is the bakery’s only other visible employee. Edith’s meager French language skills make her new situation even more lonely and bewildering.

She gradually befriends a few of the regular customers as well as a young woman whose husband plays jazz at the local club, While at the club, and with the aid of her new friend, Edith meets a tall, handsome Englishman and they are immediately drawn to one another.. He lives in Paris but comes to the village regularly to see his mom, who has Alzheimer’s and is in a care facility. In between visits, he sends Edith short but sweet, romantic postcards.

Eventually, Edith discovers not only the bakery’s mysterious secret but also its precarious finances and dim future prospects. When she discovers that the man she is falling in love with is playing a major role in the attempts to force Mme. Moreau to sell the bakery—her family’s legacy—Edith is furious and brokenhearted at his perceived betrayal.

You’ll need to read the book to uncover the bakery’s secrets and what becomes of the protagonists. It’s well worth the journey. Be aware that the Nazi occupation of France and racial bigotry play an important role in the story.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris tells the story of the Moreau family bakery through many different voices, but mostly that of Edie (Edith), a Brit who has just lost her mother and answers an ad for a bakery manager in what she believes is Paris in an attempt to heal and find herself again. The bakery turns out to be in Compeigne rather than Paris and a disappointed Edie takes the job anyways, hoping it will work out. There's a touch of the supernatural in the novel as the kitchen is haunted by the previous baker/owner, who turns out to be Madame Moreau's father. Along the way, Edie grows as a person, becomes more confident, and makes strong friendships, although she struggles with her feelings for Hugo after she learns that he is more than just a photographer. It's hard to say more without spoilers - but this was a very enjoyable read and I recommend it. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods is a charming and heartwarming novel that blends romance, self-discovery, and a touch of the magical.

This sweet story highlights the balance between grief and having the courage to move on to find your own path. The characters are driven by the desire to honor those whom they love and being true to themselves and their dreams to find peace and joy in everyday life. Evie Woods does a great job of creating characters with complex emotions, struggles, and dreams. Following Edith through her journey of searching for herself while, somewhat reluctantly, getting pulled into the community of Compiègne and the uncertain future of the myterious boulangerie, I was reminded of the importance of creating meaningful connections to the people and places around me. This story brings in a mix of historical fiction, paranormal fantasy, and romance. This is definitely a delightful book to get lost in!

I’m pretty sure I gained five pounds reading about how many pastries and loaves of bread and cups of hot chocolate were consumed over the course of this novel.

Edith thinks she’s leaving Ireland for to work at a bakery in Paris, but her imperfect French means she ends up in a small town outside of Paris. The bakery has secrets and mysteries, and uncovering some of them does wonders for both Edith and the failing shop.

Charming romantic women’s fiction for Francophiles and bakers. Edith is a thirty-year-old spinster who spent her adult life taking care of her mother rather than having a life of her own. After her mother’s death, on the spur of the moment, she answers an ad for a bakery in France that needs someone who speaks English. With a touch of magical realism, she finds love and friends and the ghost haunting the bakery. I think it’s more about the food and the history than the story, but it’s a well-written, pleasant mélange to nibble on a dull day. Cozy, relaxing, and romantic…

If you want a cozy, light fantasy read, this is a great book to pick up! It has some cute found family, a sweet romance, a beautiful French town, and lots of delicious sounding breads and pastries. The story also includes touches of historical fiction by sharing some of the bakery's history during WWII.

Edie is heading to Paris, for an opportunity at a bakery that she cannot pass up. Except there was a mistake in the translation, and she does not wind up in Paris, but a tiny town called Compiegne. She settles in here, but notices some mysterious things happening with the bakery and has some unanswered questions - like how the deliveries work. As she spends more time in the town, the bakery comes into problems with the bank, and Edie rallies support to help the bakery.

Great incorporation of recipes (and a secret ingredient!) and a dash of magic in this book. I also liked the theme of people winding up where they are supposed to be or needed, rather than where they want to be.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods was not what I was expecting. I enjoyed every page! I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley.com and I always review every book that I read. This book was magical, heartwarming, romantic, full of history, and there was a ghost! You can read the synopsis for the book, so I won't go into detail, but I felt that the characters and plot were well developed. I read this book on 2 sittings! It had me mesmerized and I had to finish it quickly to find out how it would end. I recommend this book. It will stay with you for awhile after you finish reading it. Enjoy.

I love all of Evie Wood’s books and this one did not disappoint. Another heartfelt, magical story that I was sorry to see end. Great character development with love at their very core. Edie and Hugo both searching for their true selves and Genevieve trying to hold on to her beloved bakery for her grandson, Manu. Pierre finding a family he never expected to have and changing the life of a little girl in the process. A very enjoyable read.

Edith (Edie) is having a bit of a midlife crisis even though she’s not all that old. Her mother has passed away and Edie needs a change. She spots an ad for a bakery assistant who speaks mostly English in what she thought was Paris. She gets the job and hops a plane to Paris, leaving her dad behind.

She quickly finds out that the job is not in Paris, but on a street called Rue de Paris in Compiegne. It sounds like it's a suburb of sorts and it if isn't, Paris isn't all that far...too far to ride a bike for the casual rider, but still able to get there in a timely fashion. None of that matters. The point is Edie found herself in a situation she was not expecting. She's not in Paris and Madame Moreau, her boss, isn't a friendly type. In addition to that, she's living in the attic above the bakery.

Edie's father is a baker, so she comes from this sort of life, so when she is told to never go into the basement where the ovens are, it piques her interest. What is hidden down there and why isn't she supposed to see it? Therein lies the mystery.

The story is filled with colorful, believable characters that were easy to like and relate to. A couple of them were enigmatic. Manu, for instance. Was he just the delivery boy? And at first, I didn't trust Hugo. I wasn't sure what he was all about and for a while, his romance with Edie played out like a Hallmark movie. I was hoping it would get out of that rut and it did just a bit. Regardless, I still enjoyed that aspect of the novel.

This was almost like a mature coming-of-age trope. Unexpected things happened that changed Edie's life and how she looked at things. There's also some history to it all that I found interesting, especially how Madame Moreau met Pierre Moreau. That was a touching moment. The book is wonderfully written and a joy to read, earning it an easy five stars.

I enjoyed this read. Evie Woods is an author I have read and enjoyed before but this book was a little different from the others. It takes place in France and has a little history from WWII. I loved the feeling of the little community, the addition of a little magic, and the development of Edith Lane's character. It was a book that left a sweet memory with me after reading the last page.
I was gifted an ARC by Netgalley and One More Chapter with the understanding that I would leave my honest review.

This story could be a romance between Edith and Hugo. It follows a woman who runs away to France to rediscover herself after her mother's death. There, she meets a charming Englishman, and they fall in love.
It could be about how the Moreau family struggles to keep their small family bakery out of the hands of the bank and the corporation that wants to gentrify the area.
It could be about a ghost that haunts the bakery, terrifying new employees.
But this story is more than the sum of its parts. It's a heart-warming tale full of love, friendship, and hope. This is the kind of tale that motivates and uplifts the reader. The author ties several tales together to remind us that love is the most powerful gift of all.
Thank you Net Galley, Evie Woods and Harper 360 for the arc.

The setting, the characters, the baking, it was all just perfect. I may have read this more than once.
Edie may not be where she thought she was going, but she is exactly where she needs to be.

I was invested from the start and read straight through to the end and then read it again.

It's a lovely book with a lovely story!

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods is the most romantic, delicious book ! It is such a sweet book. Edie goes to France called by a new job in a bakery in Campagnie. It is there that she finds exactly who she is. She falls in love, becomes involved with her new adopted family and friends and finds her true spirit. I loved this book! It has it all. It is a very quick book to read, but the story is huge. The foods is delicious, the man is handsome and Edie is lovely, a person of great character. It the end she helps her new employer, Mademoiselle Moreau and life is good.

I love books by Evie Woods because her words transport you to a location so alive that you can walk the streets with the characters. While there is a dash of magic in this story, the highlight is finding the magic in all of the ordinary things around us. While Edie is suffering the loss of her mother, she finally pursues her dreams. Just as in life, hardships and disappointments continue to come to Edie, but she is able to flip the coin and find the personal challenge or the new direction to take. I absolutely loved the backstory of the baker and the rich historical value of the town. There is so much information woven into the story resulting in an immersive read, leaving you with the wonder of experiencing a new place ... you can almost smell the bread baking. Thank you NetGalley and Harper 360 for allowing me to read an ARC copy of this heartwarming book that left me feeling happy and with a very optimistic outlook!

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods is a delightful tale. Edie had decided it was time to leave the nest in Ireland, so she answers an online ad for an Assistant Manager in a bakery in Paris.
Edie is the new assistant at a bakery, where she has no prior experience with the business and limited understanding of the language. She finds satisfaction in her new position, despite encountering unusual sounds and mysterious occurrences at the bakery. Eventually, she uncovers the secrets behind these phenomena, which turn out to be quite unexpected. She meets an attractive man who could potentially become a romantic partner; however, certain conditions at the bakery may influence their relationship.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris is as sweet and soul-warming as the pastries baked within its pages. With a touch of magic and a heart steeped in history, it blends whimsy with weight, shedding light on the forgotten horrors faced by Romani communities during WWII. Edie’s journey is a love letter to dreamers—the girls who once longed to drift through Paris in ballet flats, humming Chet Baker and chasing the promise of something more. Bittersweet, tender, and quietly powerful, this novel is a reminder that sometimes, getting lost is how we find where we truly belong.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris is basically a Hallmark movie set in France. It’s sweet and cozy with just a touch of magic. You are transported to Compiègne, France with the main character as she is learning to find herself after losing her mother, and she does just that along with some wonderful friends and a little bit of love.

I did not love the main character. She was a tad too insecure for my taste, and I could not quite buy her grief, but I really loved the story. It is charming and warm and just downright lovely. Also, do not read this hungry. All the recipes described sound absolutely scrumptious. 😂

A magical taste of Paris (Compiègne). There was something so sweet, simple and joyful about this book. At first glance it seems a little formulaic but then the character’s really brought warmth, complexity and depth to the story in unexpected ways. I loved how one of the characters a tour guide brought in some historical context and I’m eager to look up the City of Compiègne and learn more.

The beginning of the book had me hooked, but it really slowed down in the middle and I slowed down on reading it, but the last 20% of the book did not disappoint. I loved the ending! The character developement was really well done, from the old lady on down to the young boy and the two main characters in between. I think I highlighted at least 6 sentences that I felt could be applied to my life and which struck a chord on my heart. I was thinking this book would have somewhat of a magical element, and it did, but it was actually quite minimal. Still a good book and one I would not hesitate to recommend.

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods tells the story of Edie, who leaves Ireland to work in a bakery in France. She discovers that the bakery seems to have baked goods magically ready every morning before she awakens. Evie realizes that finding herself is more complicated than she ever imagined but worth the journey with her new friends in Compiegne, a quaint town outside of Paris.

I recommend this book for fantasy, historical fiction, and women’s fiction readers. Woods has a flair for combining historical fiction with fantasy that makes the characters feel real. The town sounds lovely and I would love to stroll the streets and stop for a crossiant at the Bakery on the Rue of Paris.

Thank you Harper 360 and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

What a cute read. This is a book you pick up when you want something cozy to read. It’s got a touch of magic. Who doesn’t love a bakery setting? If you have ever lost a loved one you can certainly empathize with the FMC. Jean was a delight and humorous. If you’ve read her previous books you will love this book. Happy reading.

Magic & mystery in the air of this bakery ~ 🥐
This book was so cute & cozy! I loved the setting, in a quaint little French town. The story had a consistent flow and was easy to follow along with. The mention of all the bakery goodies, from breads to pastries had my mouth watering! I love when authors get descriptive with food. The love interest and the old school affection is a nice little touch as well as the sections of history and the back story of Madame Moreau. I also resonated with the characters struggle with their mothers being sick &/or recently passed. The real and raw emotion was important and relatable. Overall, this was a great, quick & cozy read! I think the special vanilla was my favorite part ✨😉

Absolutely enchanting. I felt myself fully immersed in this charming, small French town and rooting for our FMC as well as the future of our little bakery from the beginning. I loved the multiple POV as well as time periods. Evie Woods does historical fiction/romance so well. I felt the pain of our characters past and cried tears of joy for each one in the end. Evie Woods has become a must read author for me and this one did not disappoint. Each book feels like it's transporting me right to the time and place of beautiful foreign countrysides and quaint towns with the best cast of characters. I love how history also comes alive with her writing yet we're still rooted firmly in the present of her main characters story arc. A dash mystery with a splash of magical realism and a pinch of romance was the perfect recipe for this charming book.

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher Harper Collins/One More Chapter, and the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Evie Woods serves up a tantalizing concoction in "The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris." This novel is a delightful blend of humor, mystery, and a sprinkle of magical realism, all set in a quaint Parisian bakery. The narrative style, featuring multiple narrators and a non-linear timeline, adds a whimsical flair to the storytelling.

Our principal narrator, Edie, a charming, self-deprecating Irish woman, stumbles upon the magical bakery while searching for purpose and pastries in Paris. Her witty commentary on her surroundings and her knack for getting into sticky situations provide the backbone of the story.

Then, we have Jean-Claude, the bakery’s enigmatic, croissant-master who seems to know more than he lets on. His sections of the narrative are filled with cryptic yet hilarious musings about life, love, and the secret ingredient in his éclairs.

The non-linear timeline is like a layer cake of intrigue, adding a rich depth to the plot. We hop between Emily’s early days in Paris, her more recent escapades, and glimpses into the mysterious, sometimes magical past of the bakery itself. While this jumping back and forth might be confusing for some, Woods handles it with finesse, ensuring each shift in perspective is both entertaining and enlightening.

The humor in the book is a treat in its own right. From Emily’s amusing inner dialogues to Jean-Claude's eccentric observations, the book leaves you smiling at every turn. Woods has crafted characters that feel vibrant and real, with quirks and idiosyncrasies that endear them to the reader.

While the novel is a joy to read, the complexity of the timeline and the multitude of voices might be overwhelming for those who prefer a more straightforward narrative. However, if you’re willing to embrace the chaos, it’s a thoroughly rewarding journey.

All in all, "The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris" is a delectable read that will leave you craving more. With its blend of humor, mystery, and a dash of magic, it's a book that promises to enchant its readers. Four stars for this delightful Parisian escapade!

Ever notice how a bakery just draws you in? The sumptuous baked goods in the window, the incredible scents that waft out of the door opening and closing as people go in and out to get their breads, doughnuts, rolls, etc? This book was just like that, just.slowly and gently drew you in with promises of wonders. I've been as heartbroken as Edith is as she reads the ad for a needed manager at a bakery in what she read as Paris. So, making a rash decision, she bought a ticket and took herself off! Can you imagine?!? Only to land and learn, its not in Paris. Another hour on a train, in a country where she doesn't speak the language, met by a young man who grabs her bags and takes off! She finds herself on a small street in a small town north of Paris, greeted by the owner, who shows her to her tiny rooms with a.mcurt, see you at 6 AM and that was it! Now what?!? She crashes, literally, wondering if she hasn't made the biggest mistake of her life!

What happens in the following pages and chapters is such a wondrous read, of self discovery, of local history, of discovering love.where.its least expected, of fighting for something that means more that just a building and a paycheck. This is a must read for anyone who loves lesser know history of WWI and WWII, Roma history, paranormal, you name it! Such a beautiful story under a title that gives nothing away. You won't be sorry!

From the book:
Nestled among the cobblestone streets of Compiègne, there existed a bakery unlike any other.

Rumours were whispered through the town that its pastries offered a taste of magic, chasing away the darkest of sorrows. Just one bite of a croissant might bring luck, unlock a precious memory or reveal hidden longings.

But dark clouds were looming on the horizon…

This book is so written so beautifully, and it captivates you from the very first pages. This story was a wonderful weekend getaway for me. I enjoyed this book so much!

I enjoy books with magical realism, mystery and food ..lol For this reason, I grabbed The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods. Come travel with Edith to Compiègne, France, as she finds friendship, unravels the mysteries of the bakery, and falls in love for the first time.

Edith has spent most of her twenties taking care of her dying mother. Now that her mom has passed, she and her Dad are trying to find themselves. Looking for a new start and chasing the memories of baking with her mother, Edith applies for a job in Paris at the Bakery on Rue de Paris. She is shocked and excited when, after one interview; she gets the job.

The story begins as Edith leaves Ireland and her Dad behind traveling by train to Paris. Only to discover that the bakery is not in Paris, but in a vintage bakery in Compiègne. She is met at the station by a young boy who takes her to the Bakery on Rue de Paris where she meets the owner, a stern woman named Madame Moreau.

The story that unfolds is a coming of age tale for a later bloomer as Edith navigates, working in the bakery, making friends and falling in love for the first time. The story unfolds slowly with the smells of bread, the cobble streets and the history of Compiègne.

Edith is curious how all the bread is baked, as there is no kitchen on the first floor or door to the basement. She slowly unlocks the secrets of the bakery after discovering an old recipe book. Along the way, she meets a young man who isn’t quite who he seems, or is he?

A touch of mystery and magical realism wrapped in history made for a compelling story. While the storyline was predictable, the characters and discovering the why of it made for a heartwarming tale that offered the perfect escape. I loved the historical aspects that the author wove throughout the story regarding the WWII.

This story will leave you craving hot chocolate and bike rides in France…

Edie arrives in France not only looking for a change in her life but to try and change the course of her life since she lost her mother. What evolves is a stunning story that envelopes Edie and her new friends who strive to change the course of history for this small town bakery where Edie works. Love, determination and a great story allow the reader to sink into Edie’s world and her life in this small town in France. I loved the writing, the story and was sad to leave this charming heartfelt story. A must read.!

W🤩W! France, pastries, a secret that lives in the cellar, and historical flashbacks tied to WWII— yes please! I adored the complexity of all the characters: the grumpy yet layered bakery owner, the protagonist who thought she got a job in Paris and stumbles upon a small village instead, Hugo, the romantic yet privileged heir, and so many dynamic minor characters! Small town vibes with some magic in the bakery ingredients made for a cozy read. Such a beautiful reminder that our love doesn’t die when people do, but lives within us and in our memories, which can be inspired by a good cup of hot cocoa or a family recipe!

Thank you NetGalley and Harper 360 for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This story is about several families affected by past loss/grief. Their connections with each other and a cause to save the local bakery that helps them in their journey to heal.

I love the way Evie Woods connects people generationally in stories. I enjoyed the way it was written. Mostly as the MC Edith’s perspective with other characters sprinkles in. I did wish there was a little more to the back story and magic of the bakery prior to the war. It didn’t take away from the overall story which was emotional, mysterious and historical. I consumed this book in a day.

I had a lot of fun reading the newest book from Evie Woods. I loved the found family trope this book seemed to have, along with her actual family as well. There were some sad moments that made you really reflect and showed you a little more depth to the main characters. That they weren't just one dimensional. I enjoyed seeing the growth from all the characters.

Edith applies for her dream position: as an assistant manager in a bakery what she thinks is in Paris. It takes place in the village of Compiègne, which played a major role in Vichy France in WWII. At the beginning, Edith is in Ireland and she has never seen the bakery on Rue de Paris, which as alluded to, is not in Paris. She does meet the major job qualification of speaking English but her French is another matter. And it is a major understatement that she does not hit it off with Madame Moreau, the proprietor, at first. Edith does make friends with some of the locals, including Hugo. Slowly, she begins to unravel the mystique behind the bakery and Monsieur Moreau himself.

A delightful read from the author of The Lost Bookshop.
