Description
You’re not leading your organization anywhere . . .unless you’re leading it into the future.
Business schools, leadership gurus, and strategy guides agree—leaders must have a vision. But the sad truth is that most don’t...or at least not one that compels, inspires, and energizes their people. How can something so essential be practiced so little in real life?
Vision may sound like a rare quality, unattainable by all except a select few—but nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone can expand their visionary capacity. You just need to learn how. In Anticipate, strategy and leadership expert Rob-Jan de Jong explains that to develop vision you must sharpen two key skills. The first is the ability to see things early—spotting the first hints of change on the horizon. The second is the power to connect the dots—turning those clues into a gripping story about the future of your organization and industry.
Packed with stories and practices, Anticipate provides proven techniques for looking ahead and exploring many plausible futures—including the author’s trademarked FuturePriming process, which helps distinguish signal from noise. You will discover how to:
Tap into your imagination and open yourself to the unconventional • Become better at seeing things early • Frame the big-picture view that provides direction for the future • Communicate your vision in a way that engages others and provokes action • And more
When you anticipate change before your competitors, you create enormous strategic advantage. That’s what visionaries do...and now so can you.

I'm a huge fan of this book. The cover intrigued me, and the content delivered. I appreciate how the author calls readers to focus on developing a personal vision as an exercise to develop the skill to cast vision in larger situations. I took tons of notes on my Kindle version of this book, and plan to buy a hard copy when it comes out so I can highlight key passages and insights. I'd recommend ANTICIPATE to anyone who is feeling a bit adrift in life--personally, professionally, relationally, etc. The ideas laid out in this book will help readers corral competing thoughts about where the future is taking them and what they want to go after,

It requires courage to voice your vision, to stand up for it, and to battle the resistance you’ll inevitably face in return, because an effective vision by definition has to be original, and therefore to some degree be provocative, maybe even slightly controversial, according to Rob-Jan de Jong in his book Anticipate: The Art of Leading by Looking Ahead. That is one of the reasons why leaders are often reluctant to espouse a compelling vision, and yet vision casting is one of the key components of effective leadership.
The book aims to explain how anyone can become more visionary, by describing:
Visionary content, including techniques for imagining a range of plausible future scenarios Visionary practices, including methods for seeing things early and connecting the dots Visionary self, including ways of developing your own integrity, credibility and authenticity as a leader Visionary communication, including how to harness the power of language and how to use stories to make your message more accessible
As the author states at the beginning of the book, vision is one of the key attributes required of leaders, and yet there are very few resources available which explain how to get and communicate a vision. In my opinion this book succeeds in breaking down the visioning process into achievable steps. It won’t turn you into an inspiring orator overnight, but it will give you a manageable path for finding, capturing, embodying and communicating a vision for your organization or cause.
Every good leader must have a convincing vision for the future, but how do you get one? This book tells you how.
