Description
I can't believe I fell for it.
It was still dark when I woke up this morning.
As soon as my eyes opened I knew where I was.
A low-ceilinged rectangular building made entirely of whitewashed concrete.
There are six little rooms along the main corridor.
There are no windows. No doors. The elevator is the only way in or out.
What's he going to do to me?
What am I going to do?
People are really quite simple, and they have simple needs. Food, water, light, space, privacy. Maybe a small measure of dignity. A bit of freedom. What happens when someone simply takes all that away?

When I was a kid, I loved William Sleator's House of Stairs--five teens trapped in a building with stairs going in every direction. There's a machine that dispenses food to them, but only if they make the right combination of moves, like punching each other or something.
I grew up. That book isn't as terrifyingly creepy to me as it used to be.
But I guess House of Stairs grew up too, and now it has this sociopathic offspring named The Bunker Diary. A teen (Linus) wakes up on the floor of an elevator after being kidnapped and drugged. He's sealed in a 6-bedroom bunker. Over the next week or so, he's joined by five others. They're being watched through the cameras. Listened to through the microphones. Their every action has a reaction, for better or worse.
And AAAAAHHHHH THE ENDING, about which I shall say no more.
I'm very excited to see this on Netgalley (thanks, Netgalley!) and see this getting US publication. It won the Carnegie medal in the UK, and I'm not sure about its appeal for kids, but last year the medal went to Maggot Moon and I still have no idea who the target audience for that one is. I think the UK just has a higher opinion of its teens than we do here in the US. Because The Bunker Diary is AMAZING and creepy and terrifying and wonderful in such a claustrophobic way.
