With reproductive rights constantly under threat, Every Third Woman in America is a timely reminder of the enormous benefits of legal and accessible abortion: benefits to women, yes, but also to children, families, employers... all of society, essentially. The author is a doctor and abortion provider, and he writes persuasively that America has "lost its collective memory of the 'bad old days' of illegal abortion," leading to increasingly stringent restrictions on women's reproductive rights.
Grimes makes no pretence at being unpartisan, and why should he when opponents of legal abortion make no such effort? Instead, he forcefully lays out the scientific, social and cultural arguments for keeping abortion easy for women to access when needed. Scattered amongst the statistics and science (which was nevertheless easy enough for a layperson to read) are the words of the women themselves. The details of the illegal procedures are stomach-churning, leaving the reader in little doubt that those "bad old days" truly were terrible.
Full of fantastic facts and figures to whip out when debating with anti-choicers, this is an essential read for anyone interested in the fight for reproductive rights.

This should be required reading for anyone who voices an opinion on either side of the debate. Great information and, at times, a difficult but necessary read for the truths of the abortion world. More than picket signs and poll results, this is an illustration of how everyone is affected by disallowing choice and stripping rights from women..
