A new book from C.L. Taylor is always a “drop everything must read ASAP”.
I’ve been a huge fan ever since The Escape then The Fear, the two first psychological thrillers I ever read.
It’s Always The Husband is a school gates mums thriller with newly divorced Jude arriving in a small town and finding herself attracted to widower Will. Will, whose first wife died and whose second wife vanished, raising eyebrows and suspicions.
There’s a lot of characters, subplots, secrets, shocks and twists. C.L. Taylor’s writing is as great as ever, I’m just not the biggest fan of school gates thrillers. Like putting together a thousand piece jigsaw, without the box for reference, you only start to see the bigger picture nearer the end.
It’s very good, and I enjoyed reading it, but I do prefer a more direct approach.
Recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books UK

Just loved this, one of the best things i have read for a while.
A big cast of characters, many very unlikeable.
A missing woman, murder and mystery.
I changed my mind several times about who did what and the ending was a real wow moment.
The talented author C L Taylor has written a real cracker of a story.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.

This is a brilliant thriller with several different mysteries going on which makes it difficult to guess what links and who did what. To.d from the perspective of 3 different mums there’s Jude who’s new to the area and who’s daughter is new to the school, Sorrell who used to be part of the clique but isn’t any more and queen bee Victoria. The main mystery is that of Robyn’s disappearance a while back and the cliques belief she was killed by her partner Will and they’re especially suspicious because his first wife died in an accident at home. It really does spiral from there with blackmail and murder added into the mix but for me it was the relationships between the different characters both in terms of the clique and romantic relationships that really made this such a solid read. There’s a lot of secrets that emerge as the story progresses, lots of surprises and I couldn’t have even started to guess the different perpetrators. This ends on a creepy note which I really loved.

The school gates clique, always an ordeal and at St Helena’s Primary it’s no different. Victoria Routledge, queen bee and demon of the PTA, rules the roost, with her trusty acolytes bobbing along in her wake. For newcomer Jude it’s her worst nightmare. All she wants is for her daughter Betsy to be happy after her last school experience. Keen to keep her distance from the ‘Mamas’, Jude chats along to single parent Will, and is more than happy when his daughter Milly befriends Betsy. When Jude realises that the clique have little or no time for Will, and she hears some cruel accusations, she is determined to find out what’s going on, even if it means gritting her teeth and getting into the inner circle.
What an absolute joy this book is! The horror of running the school gates gauntlet when you are an outsider is so perfectly illustrated, and the character of Victoria is spot on.
The start of the the book is character overload, but that adds to the feeling of the situation, and as each character establishes their place in the hierarchy all becomes clear.
An excellent plot with Taylor’s always exquisite writing, and the characterisation is perfect. And those last two chapters! 😱
I loved this book and thoroughly recommend.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK.

Excellent twisty storyline.
Keeps you guessing right to the end.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
Thanks for the opportunity to read and review

I really enjoyed this book, read it in a day. The politics of the school run mum's clique, plus the mystery of a missing woman as explored via multiple viewpoints including a mum who has recently moved into the area (Jude).
I felt I connected with the characters and really wanted to know what happened next so I couldn't stop reading. A good read.

C L Taylor creates solid thrills with a band of dislike-able characters you can’t help but root for. It’s Always The Husband is a fun, twisty thriller for this summer.

Excellent. Told from multiple viewpoints, this features the school run mama clique who doubt the innocence of school run Dad Will, whose wife died and then his subsequent girlfriend went missing presumed dead… Jude is a fairly new arrival to the school and her daughter is friends with Will’s daughter. They begin a tentative relationship, but is he innocent? Throw in a little blackmail and divorce and another death, and you have the makings of a fast paced and twisty thriller. And this is a genuinely good read with a nice little “Columbo” finale just when you think you’re done…!
I received a free ARC copy of this book via NetGalley and the publishers in return for an unbiased review.

When newly-divorced Jude arrives in the small town of Lowbridge, she is keen to make friends with the parents she meets at the school gate. She is attracted to Will but there appears to be some mystery about the fate of his previous 2 wives.
This is a well-written book which captures the rumours and gossip of a small community. There are a lot of well-drawn characters and the twists and tension make this a thrilling read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Delicious…
What secrets, lies, scandal and betrayal lie within the seemingly content confines of the town of Lowbridge? Whilst the incessant chitter chatter of school mums drown out the underlying rot, rumbles of rumour begin - is it possible that a killer is hiding in plain sight? Pacy, tense and completely compelling this is a one sit rollercoaster of a read with an immersive and nicely crafted plot populated with a wholly credible and well drawn cast and a well imagined backdrop. Perfect storytelling, keenly observed, coupled with often unexpected twists and turns. Delicious.

I adore C L Taylor's writing style and she is brilliant at creating multi-faceted characters who you feel like you know really quickly. This book was no different and I found it very pleasant to read. The characters were excellent and I found the story reasonably engaging.
I don't think that the book had a strong enough concept to fill a full-length novel. There was a lot going on but nothing that I would categorise as thrilling. The book covered quite a few storylines without really going into depth in any of them, which was a shame.
I was all set to rate this a middle of the road 3 stars, but the last chapter bumped it up to 4, I did really enjoy that.

Another great read from C. L. Taylor, this was gripping and thrilling, and kept me guessing right to the end. Lots of interesting characters and twists and turns.

I am always super happy to see a CL Taylor book land in my inbox.
It's Always the Husband is a school mum thriller with interesting twists and a well paced plot, I read it in a day.
The final few pages, ooft! Very unexpected.
4 stars.

I love a good CL Taylor novel and completely devoured this one. Told from multiple points of view and set amongst the gauntlet of the school run, where gossip quickly gives rise to rumours of murder. Is there a killer in the midst of sleepy little Lowbridge? Tense, pacy and with a great cast of characters, this kept me guessing to the end. Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author for the chance to review.

This was a good thriller that develops well as you keep reading. It's Big Little Lies meets Desperate Housewives. There are a lot of characters and it does take a while to figure out who's who and who you should be paying attention to. Not all are rounded out but that works well as showing that school gate clique. The characters who drive the story are really well done. All very believable and different. The plot itself is undeniably convoluted and you do have to suspend disbelief. But if you want escapism, this is it. Some readers will love the ending. I didn't think it added much but overall it kept me reading, probably the characters more so than the story itself.

This was a story that kept me guessing until the end, however there was a lot of characters to guess from all who had their own back stories and the chapters flitted between them. I’m a fan of this usually as I love Shari Lapena stories who I think does similar but this seemed a little bit more work to keep up with. The storyline lacked a little bit but the very last few pages were great. I’m quite conflicted on the rating for this but will go 3.5-4 stars. Thanks for early access.

This is a masterful blend of suspense, intrigue, and emotional depth. The storys strength lies in its well-crafted characters and the tension that builds with each chapter. Jude's determination to uncover the truth about Will's past is both compelling and relatable, making her a protagonist you cant help but root for.
The plot twists and turns in unexpected ways, and with short snappy chapters you cant help but keep reading. The small-town setting adds an extra layer of claustrophobia and tension, as secrets and rumors swirl around the characters. The alternating perspectives between Jude and other school mums provides a well-rounded view of the unfolding mystery whilst not causing confusion about who's thread you're following.
For me It's Always the Husband was a thrilling and emotionally charged read that kept me guessing and after the final pages I felt like I just needed another chapter because I wasnt ready to leave life in Lowbridge.

This book has so much going on, I did get lost a bit along the way especially near the end. However, it was a great thriller and kept me gripped and hooked.

Wow wow this was such a great psychological thriller which I could not put down. I loved everything about it the characters the writing style and the suspense from start to finish. I felt I was on a rollercoaster of emotions from start to finish I was hooked with so many twists I could not predict how it was going to end and wow what a great ending it was. This author if so talented to write a book that grips you from the first page and doesn’t let u stop trading until the final page. I will definitely be recommending this fantastic thriller to everyone can’t wait to read more from this author. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this great book.

The intrigue and suspense start from the outset and slowly builds with shocks and surprises, leading to a dramatic climax. Who would have thought a school run could create so much drama and be so gripping? I liked the short chapters told from different viewpoints - each with their own version of the truth. I loved how all the characters are believable.
A brilliant read. Highly recommended.

Its always the husband
WOW WOW WOW what a book i could not put this down! Kept me guessing throughout. Quick read and fast paced
I think i have found a new fave author - off i go to read any previous books by this author.
Thanks as always to netgalley, the publisher and the author for the arc.

Book Review: It’s Always the Husband by C.L. Taylor
C.L. Taylor has done it again with It’s Always the Husband—another chilling, twist-filled thriller that kept me glued to the pages from start to finish. As a long-time fan of Taylor's work, I knew I was in for a rollercoaster of suspense, but this book exceeded even my high expectations.
Set in the small, seemingly tranquil town of Lowbridge, the story follows newly-divorced Jude, who quickly finds herself entangled in the mystery surrounding widower Will. Will, the father of her daughter’s best friend, carries a dark past filled with tragedy and unanswered questions. With two dead wives under suspicious circumstances, the town has already made up its mind about Will, and rumors about murder swirl like a storm.
What makes this book so gripping is how Taylor masterfully weaves the tension between Jude’s desire to protect Will and the growing sense of danger surrounding him. As Jude digs deeper into the past, she uncovers secrets that make the town’s whispers even more sinister, all while battling her own demons from her family’s tragic history. The dual narratives of Jude’s investigation and the town’s gossip paint a compelling, chilling picture of how fear, suspicion, and obsession can warp people’s perceptions.
Taylor’s writing is sharp, and she knows how to create a sense of dread that keeps you turning the pages. Her characters are wonderfully complex—Jude’s determination and inner conflict add depth to her, while Will’s silence and secretive nature keep you on edge. The atmosphere in Lowbridge is so vivid that I could almost feel the weight of the town’s gossip bearing down on the characters.
The twists in this book are deliciously devious. Just when you think you’ve figured things out, Taylor throws in another curveball, leaving you questioning everyone and everything. The pace never slows, and the suspense builds to an explosive, satisfying conclusion.
If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers with complex characters, dark secrets, and shocking twists, It’s Always the Husband is an absolute must-read. C.L. Taylor continues to be one of the best in the genre, and this book is a brilliant addition to her already impressive catalog. You’ll be hooked from the first page and, just like me, you’ll finish it in one sitting—unable to look away from the chaos Taylor has so expertly created.
Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good, spine-tingling thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end!

Well that didn't take me long another cracking read by C. L. Taylor, a good set of charecters and a twisty turny story that didn't give up until the end

Newly divorced Jude is quickly drawn to a widower when she and her daughter pitch up in a small town. Will is very handsome and charming, but his life is full of mystery, leaving the other school gate mums to give him a wide berth. Whispers about his personal life abound, and that doesn’t stop the mums from teaming up and having more to say on just about everyone. Gossip is currency in Lowbridge and though Jude wants to protect Will, it’s not being made easy for her. Mind you, the other male partners have plenty issues of their own to deal with. In such a small place, who knew how much of a hotbed of intrigue it could be…

Another brilliantly twisted thriller from Cally Taylor, a right old page turner that I read in one sitting.
Never have I been more happy that school runs are behind me.
Nobody does divisive authentic characters like this author, every time there's at least one that I growl at endlessly through the read, but equally the mystery is always intriguing and clever
Overall a genuinely entertaining read. Loved it.

I’ve really enjoyed C.L Taylor’s other books, so was looking forward to reading to this new one. It certainly didn’t disappoint.
The characters were intriguing, and the plot delivered lots of layers and twists. It’s a memorable book and I’ll definitely recommend it.

With many thanks to Netgalley for this free arc and I am leaving this unbiased review voluntarily
Callie Taylor is consistently an author that never disappoints and this one is no exception. Bang on the money with her character portrayal and dialogue and you soon get pulled into this riveting story. Callie really captures the essence of the ‘school gate moms clique’ and it oozes realism. The story told from multiple pov adds real depth with strong solid chapters. There are a lot of twists, turns and red herrings as the author leads us on a merry dance and ends in a frantic conclusion. Then when you think it’s all over Ms Taylor throws in a wonderful last couple of chapters. Wonderful

Loved this book, I devoured it within 24 hours. Told from all different viewpoints but it wasn’t confusing at all. Murder, divorce, blackmail it had it all in and some of the twists were ones I hasn’t guessed at all. They kept coming up until the end which made a brilliant twisty thriller. It was well paced and a page turner, I kept having to read more. I will definitely look out for more from this author. It’s out in June and if you love this type of genre you won’t want to miss this!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this before publication.

Wow as usual my go to author C.L .Taylor did not disappoint with this intriguing and exciting read!
Had me hooked from the start and I didn’t see where the book was heading right until we got there. Loved the characters and the storyline this is a must read new edition from an amazing author and for anyone not familiar but love this genre then get this added to your ever growing tbr.
Thanks for the arc Negalley

I'm a big fan of C.L. Taylor, have read all her books over the years. This was no different, relatable characters, deceptive secrets, loads of mystery, nothing is ever as it seems. I would say it was a little slow starting and if it hadn't been that I like this author so much I might've not progressed with it..but I'm glad I did! Really enjoyed.

Everyone has a secret that can be hidden in plain sight. Wow firstly thankyou NetGalley & Avon books for this arc copy, this is by far my favourite book from C.L Tudor.
This book provides POV from 4 main characters (3 school moms & a husband) as they navigate school mom life and gossip.
Jude is a no nonsense single mom who has a love entwined relationship with one of the school dads Will. However no one trusts Will as he has had two partners presumed dead die in a mysterious way.
Victoria the main school mom busy body who is divorced but still wants to be the forefront of all the school gossip and be the main attention with every social groups
Sorreail a struggling mother trying to juggle her children, husband and work load as her husband is off sick from work with depression and anxiety.
& finally Andy the ex husband of Victoria and main ppoliceman who investigated into the death/disappearance of Wills recent partner.
This book has so many layers to it as it showcases the lives and povs of all these characters whilst showcasing the main source of why they all link. And that is where is Robyn and did Will kill her?
I absolutely the funny witty comment from the school moms the gossip the build up of tension when the high chase of trying to hide their secrets happen. This book had me gripped from the start and I wasn’t disappointed. This book is a fast paced thriller you need to get your hands on in 2025

Thank you to NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book! It immediately appealed to me—I’ve spent years doing school runs, not quite fitting in, trying (and failing!) to find my place, so this story had me hooked from the start.
The plot follows Jude, a new mum trying to make friends, who ends up in a group led by Victoria, the intimidating "alpha mum." At first, Victoria is unlikeable, but as the story progresses, her vulnerabilities come through, and I actually warmed to her. The three main women—Jude, Victoria, and Sorrel—team up to unravel the mystery surrounding Will Ledger, a dad at the school. His first wife died in mysterious circumstances his daughters stepmother has also vanished, and soon after, one of the husbands turns up dead.
The discovery of a mysterious diary at Will’s house by Jude sets everything in motion. Initially, Jude assume it belonged to the missing stepmother, but when she realises it didn’t, they women work together to uncover the true author’s identity. As they dig deeper, they uncover the truth about what happened to Will’s second partner, Robyn, after his first wife’s tragic death. With multiple women at the school being blackmailed, the trio races to solve the case—because, as the saying goes, it’s always the husband, right?
I loved the multiple viewpoints, which added so much depth to the story. Sorrel was my favorite—I really resonated with her. Jude was okay, but I found some of the other characters less likeable. Will, the husband at the center of the mystery, was particularly well-written—I didn’t think he was evil, so the final twist completely shocked me!
This is the third book I’ve read by C.L. Taylor—one I loved, one I wasn’t as keen on—but I’m so glad I gave this one a go. It’s absolutely spot on! A solid 5 stars and a book I’ll be recommending to everyone!

CL Taylor does it again, fantastic read, characters and storyline, thoroughly enjoyable and thrilling from beginning to end, I loved it

Oh yes, the school run, I’m still doing it after all these years! The school gates of Saint Helena‘s Primary School are abuzz after a dramatic incident involving Will Ledger, whose daughter Millie is now best friends with Jude‘s daughter, Betsy, who are newly arrived in Lowbridge. We all know school gates can be covens for gossip mongering at the very least, especially among the Queen Bees but are the rumours about Will true? “We all know what you did” rings out from someone and Jude has no clue what that means. Initially. One dead wife can be viewed as a tragedy but additionally a missing girlfriend would seem to form a pattern. However, this isn’t the only mystery in Lowbridge and Queen of Queen Bees Victoria is determined to get answers. After all, it’s always the husband, right?
I’m a big fan of CL Taylor and this is another good one to add to her pile of best sellers. The first half is especially strong and I mean STRONG! There’s whip smart dialogue, especially between Will and Jude,a ‘laser’ sharp, brilliantly astute portrayal of the school gate coterie and sparks which fly in all directions. It’s a bit like sitting on top of a huge powder keg just waiting for the thing to ignite and explode in all directions. Pressure piles on top of pressure with excellent mysteries to ponder and speculate over, just as the coven does. There’s delusion, confusion, exclusion, plenty of allusion and illusion, a barrel load of suspicion some well-founded others less so but it all adds up to the delicious ‘juiciness’.It chills, it shocks at the manipulation and devious behaviour. Cats chase mice, then the mice chase the cat, or cats but the million dollar question is who is the biggest cat? Who can Jude trust? Are these female characters especially harpies or just strong women? What about the men especially Will?? I’m all in watching the dramas, side changing and shenanigans as it’s engrossing and entertaining.
The last section does get a bit convoluted as it twists and turns in a myriad of directions often up blind alleys following the wrong suspect but it is still very enjoyable. There are quite a lot of characters to keep track of especially towards the end, which does make my head spin a bit.
Overall, it’s a really good highly entertaining domestic style psychological drama.
Publication date = 5th of June in the United Kingdom.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Avon
Books for the much appreciated epub in return for an honest review.

Another excellent read from C.L. Taylor. I was already a fan of her books and was delighted to be given the chance to advance read. This book does not disappoint but, be warned, it is engrossing and will keep you from doing anything else. Captivates you from the start and keeps you guessing until the very end when the various mysteries are revealed. I had no idea where it was going, who to like or dislike, who to trust or suspect. I won’t give any spoilers but would like point out that those groups of mums you see at school can be an interesting, varied and sometimes dangerous collection of people. although you may that already know that. I thoroughly recommend you read this.
My thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the opportunity to review and to the author for another wonderful piece of work.

‘It’s Always the Husband is another exciting psychological thriller by C.L. Taylor. A dark, twisty tale of secrets and suspicion together with an intriguing plot make a very good read.
Jude is looking for a new beginning following her divorce and moves to the quiet town of Lowbridge. But it’s not long before she is feels attracted to another man. A widower named Will has had a tragic past, his first wife’s death was a devastating accident and his second wife also died tragically. The two tragic deaths encourage locals to gossip and have suspicions of Will.
Jude has known tragedy herself, and is determined not to let an innocent man be unjustly damned. But as she digs deeper, she realises that in Lowbridge, nothing is as it seems. The town’s secrets run deep, and the more she investigates, the more she risks becoming the next victim.
This is a novel full of tension, interesting characters and a well thought out plot. Twists and turns make the reading more interesting and I found this book difficult to put down.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Avon Books for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I love C.L. Taylor! All of her thrillers are superbly written, and this one is no accepting! A twisty mystery with an ending I did not see coming!

I LOVED THIS PHENOMENAL, GRIPPING BOOK. I raced through it, it consumed me in its pages. A shocking conclusion which left me gobsmacked! LOVED IT! LOVED IT! LOVED IT!
C.L Taylor has done it again I love all her books and this was certainly no different! I devoured this book in a few days! From the beginning to end I was kept in suspense and shock. I really didn't see any of it coming.
There was so many lies, twists, and edge-of-seat moments for me everyone was the suspect, except the real one. My jaw hit the floor and kept me going to the very last page.
A huge 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 stars from me!

The question is, ‘ is he innocent OR guilty?’
what do you think?
Well, what can I say but WOW. Another fantastic publication by CL Taylor, I absolutely loved all the twists and turns in this story keeping me guessing with every chapter.
I wasn’t expecting the truth to be so difficult to realise with all the different details involving the school mums and their individual experiences with the guilty party.
Life is not always what it seems behind closed doors and that becomes true when the diary is found, but who has it now? Chinese whispers amongst the mums leads to distrust and questions being asked about where Robyn has gone and is she really dead or living a new life?
Buy this book to find out on JUNE 5TH

C L Taylor knows how to pull together a gripping domestic noir and It’s Always the Husband is no exception. Small town claustrophobia is rife and rumours surround Will. His first wife died and his second has disappeared. Three strong female characters provide different narrative points in this multi faceted mystery that’s tense from start to finish. It’s clever to take a seemingly simple situation and turn it into something more sinister. Are any of the characters reliable? What’s true, what’s speculative gossip. Should the newcomer be unsettled by past events? Great escapist fiction, kept me intrigued from the start. Well written and a genuine page turner. My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.

A great set of very well written characters surround an intriguing storyline. Will is the subject of a lot of school mum gossip after his first wife dies and second goes missing. Is he really guilty? This story is told from the viewpoint of some of the different characters. It never alows down and keeps you gagging to find out what is going to happen next. Thank you for the advance read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Numerous storylines surround the mums at the school gates in this latest fast paced read by C.L.Taylor. Victoria, the alpha female, has plenty to say about everyone, not least Will, the lone male at the gates. His first wife Ali died and his 2nd,Robyn, went missing a couple of years previous.
Sorrrel's husband Finnley is struggling with depression and when he phones Sorrrel in a state of panic, she's horrified when she gets blackmail messages about an accident Finnley has been involved in.
Jude is a newbie, no previous knowledge of past events she's looking to embark on a relationship with Will, The others are keen to warn her off.
Despite multiple voices and characters this great novel isn't overwhelming. The chapters flow easily, and there are plenty of red herrings throughout. It's intriguing, clever and a unique story.

It’s Always the Husband by C.L. Taylor is a gripping domestic thriller that plays out in the deceptively serene setting of the school run. When newly divorced Jude moves to Lowbridge, she quickly finds herself entangled in a web of gossip, secrets and suspicions centred around the mysterious Will, a single dad whose past is full of unanswered questions.
Told through multiple perspectives, the story weaves together the lives of Jude, Will, and the other school mums and their families. At times, the sheer number of characters and overlapping storylines can be a bit overwhelming, but once you get into the rhythm of it, the payoff is worth it. The drama unfolds steadily, with twists that kept me second-guessing throughout.
This was an addictive read for me. I loved the tension, the secrets, and the way every character seemed to have something to hide. A brilliant pick if you enjoy stories where seemingly ordinary lives mask darker truths.

**What a fantastic read!** This book dives into the lives of a group of parents who drop their young kids off at school each morning—where all the moms are vying for a spot in the elite inner circle. Gossip flows effortlessly as they meet up for coffee in the park, indulge in wine-fueled dinners, and throw lavish house parties. But not everyone is welcomed equally—some moms (and girlfriends) are clearly on the outside looking in, though they still crave inclusion.
Then there’s the only single dad in the group, who’s been unfairly labeled due to a past accusation he can’t seem to shake. The clique keeps that stigma alive, making sure he doesn’t forget. He’s supposed to be off-limits... until one mom starts getting a little too close—and that’s when the real drama kicks off.
Secrets unravel—affairs, disappearances, a hit-and-run, even murder—everything seems to trace back to the clique. I couldn’t put this book down! And just when you think everything’s been revealed, that final twist leaves you wanting more.
**An absolutely gripping read!** Huge thanks to NetGalley and C.L. Taylor for the chance to dive into this one.

It’s Always the Husband is a moody, gripping mystery set in the kind of small town where everyone knows your business—and no one forgets a scandal. Jude is a compelling lead: a newly divorced mom just trying to start over, who finds herself drawn into the dark past of her daughter's best friend's father. And Will? The perfect blend of sympathetic and suspicious. You’re never quite sure if he’s the victim or the villain—and that tension kept me turning pages late into the night.
The town of Lowbridge practically becomes a character itself, with its claustrophobic feel and long-held grudges. The layers of mystery peel back slowly, and just when you think you’ve figured it all out, the story takes another turn.
My only small gripe? Some of the twists felt just a little too neat by the end, and there were moments where I wanted more emotional depth from Jude, especially given the parallels to her own past.
Still, this is a solid, binge-worthy read for fans of domestic suspense with a dark edge and a dash of small-town paranoia. One dead wife might be tragic, but this book proves two definitely means drama.

This fast paced book explores the relationships between Jude, Sorrell and Victoria, all mums at the school gate.
Will’s wife is dead, and girlfriend is missing and he is the target of much gossip. Did he have something to do with the death of one and disappearance of the other?
Gradually the secrets and lies are revealed and I raced to the finish to find out.
Another great read from this author.

This book was amazing!!! A group of parents dropping their young children off at school each morning…and all the moms want to belong to the elite clique! The gossip flows smoothly and they often get together for coffee at the park, a boozy dinner, or a fancy house party! Not all moms…or girlfriends are treated the same though….but they still want to be part of the clique. The only single dad, dropping off his daughter, seems to have been wrongly accused of a crime and he can’t seem to shake that image…well…the clique won’t let him forget it! He should be off limits to the single moms…but one mom starts getting close to him and that’s when all the real gossip begins! So many secrets, and lies…an affair, missing partners, a hit and run, and murder….all involving the clique! A book you can’t put down! And just when you think the dust has settled….that ending has you wanting for more! Phenomenal read! Thank you NetGalley and C.L. Taylor for the opportunity to read this one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😍

Another gripping triumph from C.L. Taylor. The pacing was pitch-perfect, pulling me deeper with each chapter, and the shifting perspectives were masterfully done—each one adding fresh layers of intrigue and tightening the web of suspense. I found myself constantly second-guessing motives and alliances, which made the reveals all the more satisfying. The characters were richly drawn, flawed in the most compelling ways, and impossible to forget. It’s stories like this that remind me why Taylor remains one of my go-to authors for psychological thrillers.

Absolutely loved this physiological thriller. It definitely had me guessing and definitely didn't expect the end. Fantastic read.

This is another brilliant book from this author. Her descriptions are amazing and you can almost believe you are in the story as a bystander. She has the ability to weave the story and characters without it becoming too complicated to follow.
All in it is a great story with a brilliant little twist at the end

It’s always the husband is the new book from C.L. Taylor. The author is one of my go to authors so I was excited to receive a copy of this.
Jude moves into a new town of Lowbridge with her daughter. She doesn’t really click wth the other mums at the school gates only single parent Will. But there a rumour about Will that he killed his wife, and his second partner has gone missing, presumed dead and if anyone else gets close to him they might end up like that too. But Jude doesn’t take no notice of that and forms a relationship and the two daughters’ bond too.
This is another gripping psychological thriller from the author, and I did enjoy most of this one. Except at time with so many characters and back stories to contend with I did still felt a bit confused of it all. 3.5 stars from me.

I have been a big fan of CL Taylor’s books so was delighted to read this arc. This story is told from the view of many different characters but despite this it is easy to follow and flows really well. I really couldn’t decide who was guilty and it kept me guessing throughout the book. A fast paced domestic thriller, I really enjoyed this one too - highly recommend!

3.75⭐️
This book was really gripping! I enjoyed the different characters and their various storylines. No dull moments. Not all of the twists landed with me, but I really liked the last chapter. It was a nice touch.
My only complaint (and perhaps this was only because I have an ARC) was that I wish there was more of a break when we would switch from talking about difference characters within the same chapter. When it kept switching it made it more challenging to follow.
Do I recommend? Yes. This was my first book from this author and I definitely want to check out more of her work in the future!

This is told via multiple POVs but is easy to follow along despite there being a lot of characters. It will have you swinging between who is guilty throughout the whole book. Great pacing, a great domestic school run thriller, I enjoyed this, and have a read a few books by CL Taylor and haven’t been disappointed.

‘One dead wife is tragic. Two looks like murder…’
I’ve literally just finished this and holy moly! The beginning, the middle and the ending was just exceedingly good.
Thankful I got to read an ARC of this. I adore Cally’s work.
A must read for mystery and thriller readers.

A group of school mum “friends” with secrets and hidden agendas.
The newest mum to the group appears to like the single dad but the rest of the group don’t trust the single dad.
There is lots going on in this book which is really fast paced. Despite the amount of characters it was really easy to follow and a great read from CL Taylor.

Loved this book, found it fast paced as I couldn’t put it down! Loved the multiple point of views! Did not see the twist coming either I was heading in a completely different direction loved it!

Okay, it's always a treat to settle down with the latest CL Taylor novel.
And her latest novel, "It's Always The Husband" is no different.
With an intriguing, fast-paced storyline and relatable characters, this story is attention grabbing from the opening page. Now, I did say "relatable" characters. I'm not suggesting that we are all murderers or committing blackmail, with their concerns of juggling business, family and meeting the expectations of other parents at the school gates, allow readers to find themselves in a world that we can recognise and also partially understand.
We have 3 main protagonists:
Jude - a recent arrival in the town, and finding herself drawn to Will
Sorrell - a long term resident of the town, but on the fringes socially
Victoria - the Queen of the local social circle and Parents group
The three women are not friends and have very different views. With Will considered a murder suspect by most villagers, our three protoganists will find themselves struggling to find the truth before the killer strikes again.
My only issue is ... the book is being published in June and I'm writing this review in April ... how will I wait for two months to talk about it??!!

I’ve read most of the books by this author and so knew this was going to be a good read. Written from different perspectives with plenty going on I loved this thriller. Liked the last chapter too, wasn’t expecting that!

It's Always the Husband by C.L Taylor
When newly divorced Jude arrives in the small town of Lowbridge, she is soon drawn to widower Will, the father of her young daughter's best friend.
But Will's past is shrouded in tragedy, with questions that no one knows the answer to – and after two tragedies tore his life apart in just a few short years, gossip and rumours abound about what really happened to the women he loved.
Loved the characters and the intrigue of the plot. As always the author has wrote another brilliant book . Its always the Husband or is it ?
Will keep you guessing and changing your mind .

One dead wife is tragic, two looks like murder….
What a refreshing idea for a plot - a story told through multiple POVs that centres on a group of school mums and their husbands.
It reminded me of the tv show Motherland.
I was kept entertained throughout. I’ve read this author before, and I think she’s skilled at keeping the reader guessing.
I didn’t know who to believe and that’s exactly what I’m looking for in a thriller!
I would definitely recommend! Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the arc

This book definitely keeps you on your toes. The twist the end really threw me for a loop that I didn’t expect. The story really never lets you see who the killer is until you get to the end and even then there is more than one murder in this story. It has a lot of ups and downs throughout it and it’s sad cause most husbands aren’t who they say they are.

C.L. Taylor’s forthcoming psychological thriller, It’s Always the Husband, to be published on June 5, 2025, is a tale of small-town secrets and the complexities of human relationships, especially the inexplicable relationship of the school run mums! Jude, a newly divorced mum of Betsy, arrives in a small village called Lowbridge, where she has to the navigate the treacherous waters of local gossip and suspicion and always feeling like she’s on the outside of the “in” group!
Jude becomes friendly with Will, a man shadowed by tragedy. Lowbridges’ rumour mill is relentless, with many quick to assume the worst about Will. Jude sets out to uncover the truth and embarks on a journey that intertwines her fate with the enigmatic Will.
The book is masterfully crafted and filled with tension and unexpected twists. Any parent can relate to the school gate dynamics and Taylor captures the cliques and judgments that permeate such settings. Each character harbours their own secrets, which adds depth to the unfolding mystery.
I found the plot engaging and kept me on my toes, but felt that there were moments where the various plots and characters felt a little cumbersome. That said, the intricate web Taylor weaves ultimately converges in a satisfying and unforeseen conclusion.
In summary, I found this book to be a gripping read that throws you into the many human emotions of betrayal, trust and the impact it can have on individual relationships.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this book to any psychological thriller fans. Taylor’s writing has been excellently executed with a crafted twist which you may not have seen coming!

Thank you to NetGalley, C.L Taylor and their publisher for the approval to read Its Always The Husband.
This is my first book that I’ve read from C.L Taylor, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Her style of writing is very easy to follow, the chapters are at a perfect length which I love.
You get to know each character well and the plot of the book is great too. I must admit, I did get confused at the beginning of the book and towards the end as the chapters were jumping to different characters however that didn’t hinder my enjoyment with the book.
Very enjoyable book, great plot, great twists and turns.
Thank you so much for the approval and I wish every success for publication day.

Full review to come on Goodreads and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy

C.L. Taylor has done it again with another addictive thriller!* *It’s Always the Husband* is packed with secrets, lies, and twists that had me second-guessing everything.
The story jumps between different perspectives, and there are so many mysteries unfolding at once that it’s impossible to figure out how everything connects. Just when I thought I had it all worked out there was another twist! The big question throughout is: Did the husband do it? Or is there something much darker going on?
What I loved most were the messy, complicated relationships both friendships and romances because they made everything feel so much more intense. The tension builds right up to the end, and that final twist?!
If you love thrillers that keep you guessing with loads of drama and shocking reveals, you need to read this one. C.L. Taylor never disappoints!

I’ve always been drawn to psychological thrillers, and It's Always the Husband by C.L. Taylor didn’t disappoint. From the very beginning, the story hooks you with its intriguing premise and the complex, often unreliable characters. The way Taylor balances past and present is impressive, slowly revealing secrets about the characters and their relationships.
What I loved most was how Taylor didn’t just focus on the mystery, but also explored deeper themes like grief, trust, and the consequences of buried secrets. While I found some twists a bit predictable, the pacing kept me engaged, and I was never bored.
Overall, I think this is a solid pick for fans of thrillers who enjoy a mix of suspense and emotional depth. It might not have the most shocking twist, but it’s definitely a captivating read from start to finish.

I was thrilled to get an early copy of It’s Always the Husband. C. L. Taylor has done it again. Her knack for weaving nail biting suspense with utterly believable characters had me hooked from the very first page. The short, punchy chapters told from multiple characters meant I kept telling myself, just one more page… until I realised it was well past midnight.
Moving to a new area, Jude crosses paths with Will, a single father, whose little girl befriends Jude's daughter. Trouble is, there are whispers that he murdered his previous partners. Could it really be true?
The mystery surrounding what had happened to the two women in Will's life had me suspicious of everyone; nobody is quite what they seem. It was fascinating to read the drama unfold through different eyes. There was something deliciously gossipy yet unsettling about it all. Every chapter dropped new breadcrumbs, so I was constantly guessing who was truly responsible and who might be covering up dark secrets.
And “one dead wife is tragic, two looks like murder” is the perfect tagline.
I’ve loved every book by C L Taylor, and this one was no exception. It’s Always the Husband is twisty, gripping, and completely addictive.
Thanks to the author, Netgalley and Avon for the advance copy.

Delighted to have got my hands on the newest offering from @cltaylorauthor.
Jude has moved to a new town, and met a nice single dad in the school playground. Unfortunately, rumour has it he killed the last two women in his life.
This book has all the gossip and drama that the school mums have to offer, along with lots of juicy extras. A brilliant story that leaves you guessing and gives you just the ending you need.
I loved it! I love all @cltaylorauthor books and this is another that lives up to expectations.
Thanks to @cltaylorauthor @netgalley and @avonbooksuk for the arc 🥰

Any announcement of a new book by C L Taylor is cause for celebration, I have loved all her books and this one is no exception! It follows the story of easy going Jude who moves to Lowbridge with her daughter and becomes friends with single parent Will. This causes concern amongst the tight knit mothers led by Victoria, who has a private life not quite as perfect as she’d like people to believe. Will has had one wife who passed away and another partner who has disappeared - there’s no smoke without fire as far as they are concerned. This is a twisty turning thriller that keeps you guessing all the way through and leaves you satisfied that all the ends are tied up when you arrive breathless at the end! My only disappointment is that I’ve read it and will now have quite a wait to her next book! Many thanks to Net Galley for an advance copy.

What an amazing author and book. The story grabbed me at the beginning and surprised me at the end.
The author had me feeling as if I was right there in that community. Her characters were developed as one reads the books.
The plot was put together so very well.
I will definitely be adding this author to my list!

I found this book hard to get into at first. I found it hard to keep up with all the different names and points of view but by 40% of the way through I was hooked. I didn’t guess the twist which I’m usually good at with mystery thriller type books. I really recommend this book once you get used to the different POVs it’s brilliant and gripping

This story is told from multiple POVs, Jude , Victoria, Sorrel and Andy .This made me second guess everyone as I tried and work out what really happened to Will’s partner Robyn as well as who is behind the other strange things that are happening to some of the residents. And the final chapter was too good I enjoyed the twist. This is my second read by this author and cltaylor delivers a gripping, well-paced thriller that held my interest throughout. I thank netgalley and avonbooks for eARC copy.

This was a whats going to happen next read from the very beginning it has it all murder, blackmail, secrets and lies and a lot of gossip.
Characters you can relate to, but it's hard to really root for any of them, and that adds to the intrigue with the chapters told from their perspectives, making it a page turner.
A really good layed thriller with a twist at the end that is a shocker.
A recommended read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books for the Arc.

I recently read this book while traveling and loved it. I truly couldn't put it down! I loved the characters' interactions and the different personalities, especially when you started to see that not everyone was as they seemed. I found myself rooting for people and was totally taken by surprise by the twist at the very end! (Even I believed the bad guy!) I truly didn't see that coming! Bravo for writing such a clever, fun book! You took ideas/topics that are often seen in books and added twists and turns that kept me guessing! I would highly recommend this book to my friends.

My thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books Uk for a copy of “ It’s Always The Husband “ for an honest review.
This was another excellent , suspenseful book by C L Taylor. I often struggle to cope with so many different characters in a book but these were so well written that it wasn’t a problem for me.i enjoyed the storyline being set around parents at the School gates and could definitely identify with the gossipy aspects of the huddled groups.
I changed my mind several times to the outcome of the book and was totally blindsided by the end.
Highly recommended

This is a good book. Do not read if you don’t want to read about affairs, murders, deceit or clicky PTA moms. Just when you think the last twist has been revealed, C.L Taylor is like “hold on……. “ and adds another one. If you think you know “who done it”, think again because that’s not who it was.
The tea is hot, find a comfy chair and dig in.
This book left me feeling satisfied. The characters are relatable, the plot is realistic and the ending left me feeling good with the ending but because I liked the book, I wouldn’t be mad if there was spin off book.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advance copy to read.
I really enjoyed It's Always the Husband and found myself eager to keep on reading to see where the story went. It is told from multiple POV's, which I would normally find confusing but the way this is written and set out I didn't find that happening.
There are lots of plots all interlinked and playing out at the same time, which really keeps you guessing on what has happened.
Overall, a very easy and enjoyable read, one that I would highly recommend.

Finally a good thriller with well constructed plot twist(s) and engaging storyline.
Everyone suspects handsome single dad of murdering not one but two women, his wife and his missing girlfriend..is he wrongly accused or is it always the husband?
from different POVs we follow the story told by Victoria, Jude, Sorell and Andy
Victoria, the queen bee of the mamas group strongly believes he did it
Jude wants to prove his innocence and solve the puzzle of the missing woman
Sorell didn't need to be mixed in this drama alongside her already complicated life
Andy wouldn't rest till he sees Will behind bars
In an engaging woven web of school run, suburban drama, secrets and gossip I fully enjoyed the book till the very last word.

Another great read from this author as we get the twisted dynamics of the school gate mums who rules the roost around drop off and pick up time and the little clique aren’t looking for a new member but when Jude joins the neighbourhood and starts getting friendly with Will tongues start wagging. Will may seem like the perfect guy but one wife dying and another partner gone missing is he quite as innocent as he seems. As Jude tries to find out the truth the gang of mothers are all hiding secrets of their own and will stop at nothing to make sure they don’t come out. A great read I could not put down!!

Omg I have never been so invested in a book before guessing all throughout. A missing person then theres blackmail and everyone is thinking its each other This book has made me realise one thing I'm so im glad I'll never have to do the school run. That stuff is crazy those mamas are crazy. This book is absolutely brilliant. So many twists and turns and a shocker at the end. No questions left unanswered.
Best book I've read so far of 2025
.5 stars
I will definitely be recommending this to the members of the plot thickens book club group on facebook.

Lowbridge is the kind of small town that looks charming on the outside but is packed with secrets, rumors, and a whole lot of judgment. From the moment Jude arrives, freshly divorced and trying to start over, there’s an uneasiness that lingers — and it only grows when she connects with Will, the local widower everyone seems to whisper about.
The mystery surrounding Will’s past had me hooked. Two women gone in just a few years? It’s the kind of setup that keeps you side-eyeing every character and second-guessing the truth. Jude’s drive to uncover what really happened, especially with her own family’s history of loss, gives the story a lot of heart and tension.
The twists are well-placed, the small-town dynamics feel real, and the writing keeps the suspense simmering from start to finish. A solid, addictive read with just the right amount of darkness.

When newly-divorced Jude arrives in the small town of Lowbridge she finds herself drawn to Will, the father of her daughter’s best friend. Will’s past is shrouded in mystery. His first wife’s mysterious death and the disappearance of his second is the cause of gossip at the school gates. Jude is determined to uncover the truth; Because whilst one dead wife is tragic, two starts to look like murder…
I always know when I lift a C.L. Taylor’s book I will not be disappointed and this was no exception! The plot kept the quick pace and had me racing through all the twists and turns. The school mums were very Mean Girls-esque and I think we all know a few in real life! Great plot twists and overall a fab read.
Thanks to NetGalley and C.L. Taylor for an ARC. Much appreciated

Loved this book. Characters and plot were spot on. I was in a slump before I started this but I absolutely flew through it. Loved the writing style

Another fantastic read from C L Taylor. This book had me gripped from the outset.
It's Always The Husband is full of secrets, lies and a fantastic cast of school mum's. As ever Taylor has a way of keeping the pages turning!
Thank you Netgalley

It’s Always The Husband follows the story of newly-divorced Jude, who moves to the town of Lowbridge with her young daughter. Soon after arriving, she finds herself drawn to Will, the father of her daughter’s best friend. But Will’s past is shrouded in mystery. His first wife’s death and the unexplained disappearance of his second have fuelled endless gossip among the local school mums. While Jude is reluctant to judge an innocent man based on rumours, she can’t help but wonder if there is some truth behind them.
I’ve always enjoyed C. L. Taylor’s writing style, and this novel was no exception. The plot kept me gripped, eagerly turning the pages as I uncovered more about the characters and their hidden motives. The author's depiction of school-gate gossip was spot on, with characters who felt so real they reminded me of people I’ve met in real life. I especially loved the portrayal of queen bee Victoria and her volatile relationship with her ex-husband. Those dynamics added another layer of intrigue. The author skilfully highlights how, behind closed doors, each character is dealing with their own struggles, which influence their actions in unexpected ways.
However, I didn’t find the ending as strong as the rest of the book. When the perpetrator was finally revealed, I had to go back and remind myself who they were. I felt they hadn’t been prominent enough to justify such a pivotal role. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the novel and would definitely recommend it to fans of domestic thrillers.

It was a good, enjoyable twisty read but are mothers at the school gates really so immature these days. I get that school girls can be bitchy and best friends one day and sworn enemies the next but do they really carry it through to adulthood? I loved the twist at the end.

A psychological thriller that had me hooked from the very start. There were multiple POVs but that helped with the story and plot twists!

It's Always The Husband by C.L. Taylor
Book Review
Are you in the mood for a dark, additive and slightly obsessive read...
I would even go as far as saying stalkerish....
Meet Jude....she has just recently moved to a small, sleepy town in Lowbridge where the school gates in the morning and evening could quite possibly be the highlight of her day...
Jude meets her daughter's best friend's father Will who is struggling to cope with the disappearance of his wife some time ago..
Add to the equation a whole village thinking he may have had something to do with it and it doesn't make for a happy situation.
Jude likes Will though so she is determined to uncover the truth and prove Will had nothing to do with her disappearance.
It doesn't help his situation that she is his second wife to have been presumed dead.
Moving at a fast pace, this read is quite compelling..
It will draw you in for sure trying to keep up with the lies, the deceit and the drama...
One for your list...
Out on 5th June 2025

I have to say, it completely caught me off guard. I don’t usually pick up romance novels, but this one had me hooked from the first chapter. The chemistry between the two main characters was electric—it wasn’t just about the physical attraction, but the way they challenged and supported each other. I found myself rooting for them, even when they were making mistakes or letting their insecurities get in the way.
What really stood out to me was how real the story felt. The dialogue was sharp and natural, and the emotional moments hit hard without feeling overly dramatic. I could see pieces of myself in the male lead, especially in how he struggled to open up and be vulnerable. It made me think about my own relationships in a way I didn’t expect.
The pacing was perfect, with just enough tension to keep me turning the pages. And while there were moments that felt predictable, the journey was so enjoyable that I didn’t mind. By the end, I was smiling like an idiot—it was that satisfying.

I LOVED this one! Id taken a break from crime thrillers as sometimes I feel once you've read a few you've read them all but C. L. Taylor never disappoints. I was pleasantly surprised by the reveal in this one and was kept guessing throughout. Just when you think you've cracked it, your wrong! I was kept on the edge of my seat right to the very end, even staying up until 3am to finish it. That's when you know it's a good book!

4.5 stars - What an engaging and hectic story about a bunch of mothers who all know each other from the school run! Definite desperate housewives vibes.
Jude is new to the area with her daughter and she gets to know a single dad, Will, on the school run. But the other mums are suspect of him and she knows he has an interesting past. What unfolds is a lot of drama and intrigue!
This book is told from a number of different POVs and follows the relationships of not only Jude and Will but several of the other school mums and their husbands too. At times it is a lot to take in but when it all unfolds it makes for a story that is very hard to put down!
The only slight downside is the complex web of characters, at times it gets a bit overwhelming and it’s often hard to remember which school mum is who! But apart from that I loved this one, it kept me hooked and guessing the whole time and there were plenty of twists / reveals along the way!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another fantastic read from Cally!
I love how her books are so different yet so readable and relatable at the same time.
Jude is newly single and has moved with her daughter to make a fresh start. She’s struggling to integrate with her school run mums but is happy so meet Will, a single dad. Who is single due to his wife being dead and his partner being missing….
Such a clever story and so well written - will be highly recommending.

It's Always the Husband is a fast paced, well plotted read that will keep those pages turning and the lights on.
The story is told from multiple POV's which works very well and adds an element of suspense.
There is Jude, Victoria, her ex husband Andy ( a piece of work he is ) and Sorrell.
Who is the reliable narrator and who can the reader trust.
We have a missing woman and most of the school mum's and town think well it's always the husband and are quick to blame Will.
Is it always the husband though?
Time will tell.
Jude thinks he is innocent and Victoria believes he is guilty. Everyone has an invested interest.
There is gossip, secrets, lies, suspense and loyalty to a degree.
C.L. Taylor always does a masterful job of hooking the reader in with twists and turns, red herrings and It's Always the Husband is no exception.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and could not put it down.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books U/Avon for the privilege of reading and reviewing It's Always the Husband.

Omg! I loved this book. The story is set in a small town and focuses on a group of school mums and their friendship circle. Jude is new to town and has developed a friendship with Will, a single dad whose daughter is in the same class as her daughter. But the rumour is that Will’s first wife died and his second just vanished, or did he kill them both.
The story follows the relationship between the friends, the lies and deceit within their families and how they team together to learn the truth.
This book had me gripped from the first couple of pages. We all know “those mums” at the school gate and I was desperate to know what had happened to Will’s partner Robyn. At first I was convinced it was him and then went through pretty much everyone else in the story too. Each with their reasons, each family with their problems and each a potential killer. Loved it.

An interesting idea, relatively well executed. I love the use of stereotypes throughout the book (b*tchy school mums, suspicious single dads etc) and how they’re used to fuel the plot. It’s relatively fast paced, but felt a bit slower than other C L Taylor books- still enjoyable though.
I definitely didn’t see the twists coming, and hadn’t guessed how it was going to end. The characters each have their own individual personalities, some likeable and some not, although my opinions on characters changed throughout the book because of good character development.
Highly recommend this for any thriller lovers, and fans of CL Taylor’s previous work won’t be disappointed.

My overall impression: with friends like these, who needs enemies?
I have been hunting for a great thriller and this book is exactly what I’d been searching for! It’s Always the Husband is a twisty tale that is told from multiple perspectives. I loved the different points of view as they contained plenty of detail while keeping me guessing about what narrators were reliable.
C.L. Taylor’s plot is one that is tightly woven together; I sometimes find thrillers follow a familiar predictable pattern but this was not the case in It’s Always the Husband. I think that each thread of the story is meticulously plotted and realized that some of the smallest details were, in fact, some of the biggest clues. As the book reaches its conclusion, all the clever details in the tapestry of the tale are revealed. I was both surprised and satisfied when all was divulged.
I am hesitant to say anything that will spoil the book for those who have not read it. However, I have a newfound appreciation that a daily school run is not in my routine!

It's Always The Husband is a domestic thriller set around a group if parents in a small town. The titular husband has been accused of murdering not one but two wives, and Jude is warned to stay well clear. But she doesn't see things the same way.
There are a lot of characters, and the narrative is unveiled from multiple points of view, so the first half of the book feels slow. There's a lot of set up, of cliques and politics, before things become very interesting. The characters are nicely nuanced, with good and bad traits, making it difficult to work out who to believe.
The final section of the novel sees some amateur detective work go wrong, as well as several revelations that turn things around. It all makes sense in the end - and becomes a very good thriller.

This was such a good book. I loved the story and the writing so much. The characters were great and the story flowed smoothly. Will definitely read more books by this author in the future.

Another great read by C. L.Taylor.
Jude recently divorced moves to Lowbridge with her daughter Betsy.
She is a no-nonsense kind of person, so she doesn't engage with the clique at the school gates.
That is until there is an altercation at the school gates. Jude and Will, who's first wife, died, and then his partner Robyn has disappeared soon get the tongues wagging.
Queen bee Victoria decides to have drinks so she can find out what is happening between Jude and Will. She wants to warn her. They think Will murdered Robyn.
This was full of twists and turns. Who to believe and who is lying.
I didn't work out who it was.
There are a lot of characters in this, and trying to keep track at times was challenging.
With thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books for the ARC in return for an honest review.

It's Always the Husband by new to me author C.L. Taylor, published by Avon Books UK, is a thrilling school gate general fiction mystery/thriller.
There are multiple povs, lots of characters. It took me more than a minute to get them all sorted in my head.
Jude and Will, Victoria and Andy, Sorrell and Finnley, all of them are connected.
A complex, complicated, verwirrende story, full of twists and turns, schadenfreude, desperation, hate and more.
A great read, 4.5 stars.

I was so excited to get my hands on an ARC for this book as I love this author.
I was not disappointed! Took a little while to get used to the way it is written but enjoyed the characters points of view expressed through the style of writing.
The plot was engaging and full of surprises, which kept me reading long into the night. A great thriller. Not my favourite of this author’s collection but certainly a page turner and a bloomin good read nonetheless.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon publishers for my ARC in return for honest feedback.

Its Always the Husband is set in a small close knit community where everyone knows each other and noone has any secrets from each other. Or do they?
Incomer Jude and daughter Betsy move to Lowbridge for a fresh start; the school mums are quite cliquey and judgemental so Jude tries to keep herself to herself. But when trouble comes knocking, she has to become involved.
It was a great read with lots of sub-plots and twists to keep me entertained; I was gripped to the page and couldnt wait to find out what happened next.

My Review
Being a newbie to C L Taylor's books, I feel I can come in completely without bias about this book.
This book reminded me of Motherland but on steroids. Lots of characters, school gates mum club and the story is told from each of their perspectives. Normally I don't like this way of writing as it can be confusing however the author has done a fantastic job with how they have written this. It's another page turning thriller!
I'll also be honest, it kept me guessing! Whilst I was reading this, I pictured a TV show in my head - I truly believe it would be an amazing 6 part series! The ending in particular was one of my favourites I've read in a while!!
It's definitely one to preorder!
Rating: xxxx.5
This book is released on 5th June 2025 so in perfect time to take on your summer holiday 😀
Thanks to both CL Taylor and Avon Books for this advanced readers copy.

This is a wonderful afternoons enjoyment. Brilliant storyline with some very strong characters and lots of sub stories going on for different people. Friendships that you don’t expect to happen. Robyn the second parter one day just disappears amid rumours of who has done what. You can tell this is a CL Taylor book and if you have like previous books you won’t be disappointed and if you are new to this author definitely one you will follow 😊

Another fast paced book from this author. Great twists in it. Managed to keep me hooked right from the start.
Would recommend to anyone who likes this genre

Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from Netgalley. This was a compelling read. Taylor utilises the ensemble cast well, and unlike with other books with this many main characters, I felt like the ensemble added to the story rather than confusing me with how many there were are. Although the 'main' revelation felt rushed, I loved the final, subtle twist in the epilogue. It didn't click until I'd put the book down, but it made me gasp out loud. I haven't read anything by this author for a few years, but I'm excited to read their next work.

What a fantastic read that kept me hooked! I am a huge fan of C.L. Taylor, and this one didn’t miss the mark either. There were twists and turns every which way—I loved the multiple POVs, and there was so much to unravel that you never knew who to trust with all the secrets and lies. I would definitely recommend it!

Loved, loved, loved!! So we'll written and masterfully plotted out. I loved the multiple plot points that were perfectly weaved throughout the book. The characters were original and brought to life so vividly. There were twists, turns, secrets, lies, it was an absolute delight to get lost in this story and I couldnt put it down

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Although I thought I had read C.L. Taylor before, it turns out that this was my first time reading her work - and I'm so glad I had the opportunity. I especially love that she's a local author!
Taylor delivers a gripping, well-paced thriller that held my interest throughout. Her ability to build suspense and create complex, believable characters stood out. The story progresses in a way that keeps the reader guessing with plenty of twists.
The dedication - "To everyone who has survived the school run" - sets the tone immediately for some scathing observations on the school gate cliques. Sharp and relatable! I was hooked from the first chapter and often wished I could read on.
There are so many layers to this story, expertly depicting how seemingly flawless lives can hide deep cracks. The author is a master of the red herring, leading to several "WTF!" moments as the plot unfolded!
Around the three-quarter mark, though, I was starting to wonder if there was almost too much going on. The number of possible theories felt a little overwhelming at times. While the book remained a page-turner, the ending felt rushed, a little confusing and less satisfying than I hoped for. Hence the four stars.
Despite this, I found the book engaging and extremely readable. The combination of humour, suspense and sharp social observation made for a compelling and thought-provoking read. Although the resolution wasn't as strong as the build-up, the ride was worth it! I'll definitely be checking out more of this author's work in the future.

Fantastic I loved how it kept the reader guessing right until the very end. Full of twists, suspense, tension and atmosphere, I didn't know what to think or who to believe. I loved it

It’s Always the Husband by C.L. Taylor is a gripping psychological thriller that expertly explores the complexities of friendship, betrayal, and suspicion. The story follows a tangled web of secrets and lies as a group of friends becomes caught up in a shocking crime. Taylor’s sharp writing and clever plotting create a tense, absorbing narrative that keeps you guessing until the final reveal.
The characters are well-developed, each with their own hidden motives and emotional baggage. The shifting perspectives and timelines add depth to the story, slowly peeling back layers of deception and mistrust. Taylor skillfully builds suspense, and while some twists are more predictable than others, the emotional weight behind them keeps the story engaging. The exploration of toxic friendships and moral ambiguity adds an extra layer of complexity.
The pacing is strong, though the middle section slows down slightly as the focus shifts to character backstory. However, the final act delivers a satisfying and unexpected resolution that ties the threads together well. It’s Always the Husband is a smart and unsettling thriller that offers both psychological depth and sharp twists. A solid 4-star read—perfect for fans of dark domestic suspense.

Another great piece by CL Taylor, that kept me up at night. Intriguing plot with no clue till the end what was happening. Great when I can't guess the end.

Thank you for my copy of this book to read and review.
I found this book really easy to get into from the start, I liked the short chapters as it meant I could pick it up and put it down when I had a few minutes to spare.
I always enjoy books that are told from multiple character perspectives.
Although the story did keep me reading, I did find it a little slow.

What a page turner!
I could not put it down. The book is engaging from the first page, live how it's told from different POVs.
I loved the short chapters which just made me race through to the end
I am a big fan and read and loved all of C L Taylors work!

Oh my god this book is incredible. I was absolutely hooked and couldn’t tear myself away from this. So many twist and turns. It will keep you guessing right until the very last page.

Yet another brilliant book from this author. It centres around a small group of young mums who get to get her and love to gossip . They all have secrets, some they shared to each other some are still a secret. Someone knows some of their secrets but who.
Is it one of them or someone outside of their group.
Fast paced book with so many twists to keep you guessing right up to the end.

A good read with lots of intrigue. As ever, this author does not disappoint. Will continue to look forward to her books.

Another great psychological thriller from C.L. Taylor. This one has a dark and twisted plot based in a quiet town.
Told from the multiple POV’s of Victoria, Sorrell, Jude and Andy. I really liked having the different insights from the characters and what they were really thinking.
Jude is new to the area and as she begins to learn more about the town of Lowbridge she discovers everything is not as it seems. She strikes up a friendship with single dad Will but he seems to have his fair share of enemies in the town.
I really enjoyed how this one turned out, the ending was really good.
Thank you to the publisher for my ARC via Netgalley.

A truly gripping and twisty novel that keeps you guessing until the last page! For fans of thrillers and true crime, it is perfect at building the suspense and making you guess, at times leading you in the wrong direction, which makes the reveals all the better!

Well this was a deliciously gossipy take on the playground mafia mummy’s that we all know and “love”! Every school has that one group of women that we take a perverse pleasure in seeing their downfall and It’s Always The Husband does pack in plenty of those moments! It’s an enjoyable and engaging psychological thriller where you are never quite sure who is the “bad guy” because they are all such unreliable and unlikeable characters!
If you liked Big Little Lies then you will love this!

Ahhh this book had so many twists and turns. Fast paced and kept me guessing throughout. The mums and the town gave me serious desperate housewives vibes. I thought I would struggle with the many different perspectives but the characters became so real to me. Highly reccomend this thriller!

I love C L Taylor's books and look forward to reading her new ones. This was no exception,
it starts off with the typical school run with the usual clicky groups meeting for drinks etc and ends with a murder being solved. There were a few twists and turns along the way and I had no idea. Thanks to Avon books and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this early.

I’ve read a couple of C.L. Taylor books and really enjoyed them, but I thought this was not one of their best book.
The plot was a bit far fetched, but having said that I did enjoy the writing and the book itself.
The writing and storytelling was great, the twists and plots were thrilling and full of suspense, and the book kept me hooked till the end.
Thank you to the publishers Avon Books UK for an advanced copy of this ebook and giving me a chance to review this book!

The Blurb 📖
One dead wife is unfortunate, a second looks suspicious.
When Jude moves to a small town, she's attracted to Will, the father of her daughter's best friend. But the rumour mill suggests that Will is dangerous. You could ask his first wife, or his second, but neither are around....
Jude doesn't want to believe the rumours and sets out to discover the truth for herself. Is she going to be the third victim?
The Good 📖
This isn't my first C.L. Taylor book so I knew what to expect - and this didn't disappoint. Jude was a relatable character, a mum trying to find her way in a new town, doing her best for her daughter whilst navigating the school mums - not always an easy task and I love how this was portrayed throughout the book.
The unofficial leader of the school mums, Victoria, wasn't favourite character. She was portrayed as an adult Mean Girl and I loved seeing her character develop over the course of the book.
The ending felt right, and the relationships that come out of this story felt true to life.
But I wouldn't have wanted to live in that town!
The Meh 📖
There were a lot of characters in this book and it could sometimes be difficult to keep track of who was who. It wasn't unmanageable though and I do think overall it was necessary for the book. It also felt like most of the men were portrayed slightly negatively but not too much to take away from the story overall
The Result 📖
This was an ARC from NetGalley and Avon Books. I whizzed through the book very quickly - always a good sign that I'm enjoying the book and want to know what happens next. If you are a fan of C.L. Taylor this won't disappoint. If you've never read any, why not? Add this to your reading list!
Thanks to Avon Books and Netgalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a huge C.L Taylor fan and have read all of her work. This was a book with a ton of character perspectives, and yet they were so easy to follow due to the way in which it was written. You got to know everyone, had ones you love, ones you love to hate (cough Victoria cough) and ones you were so conflicted about due to the opinions of the characters. Whilst I did enjoy this immensely, I was quite disappointed with the ending. Was it predictable? 10000% NOT. But I felt like it was a bit too far out there and not totally cohesive with the rest of the book. I'd still recommend it though, Callie's writing is phenomenal as always

I adored The Guilty Couple and Every Move You Make so I was very excited to read the new standalone thriller from C. L. Taylor.
Jude is new to town and has no patience for the school gate politics. She’s not interested in cliques or gossip – she just wants to get on with things. But after her daughter keeps inviting her friend over, Jude finds herself drawn to Will – her friend’s father.
One morning, Will is attacked outside the school. The other mums just watch – but Jude rushes to his aid. Later, they reach out with a chilling warning. Doesn’t she know about Will’s past? His first wife died and his second vanished without a trace. They’re convinced he’s responsible for both events. After all, it’s always the husband, isn’t it?
What follows is a gripping, twist-filled psychological thriller packed with secrets, suspicion and shocking revelations. This was a fab read, I especially adored the final couple of pages! If you love fast-paced thrillers that keep you guessing then make sure to jump on this one.
Thank you Avon Books and NetGalley for ARC.

The first thing you need to know about C.L. Taylor’s upcoming novel, It’s Always the Husband, is that it’s basically Motherland on crack—a dark and twisty tale of deceit, secrets, and suspicion set against the backdrop of the typical school run. Scheduled for release on June 5th, 2025, this gripping thriller promises a rollercoaster of twists and turns, told from multiple perspectives.
When newly divorced Jude arrives in the small town of Lowbridge, she is soon drawn to the enigmatic Will, father to her young daughter’s best friend. But Will’s devastating past holds questions that nobody knows the answer to—and after two tragedies tore his life apart in just a few short years, gossip and rumours abound about what really happened to the women he loved. Because whilst one dead wife is tragic, two starts to look like murder…
C.L. Taylor masterfully weaves a narrative that delves into the complexities of small-town life, where the school gates become the epicenter of intrigue and danger. The story’s strength lies in its multifaceted characters, each harboring secrets that unravel as the plot progresses.
Jude’s journey as a newcomer trying to fit into the tight-knit community of Lowbridge is both relatable and compelling. Her interactions with fellow parents, the cliques, and the ever-present gossip mirror the dynamics many experience in real life, adding authenticity to the narrative. Will’s character is shrouded in mystery, with his tragic past casting long shadows over his present, keeping readers guessing about his true nature.
The novel’s pacing is impeccable, with each chapter peeling back layers of deception and building suspense. The multiple perspectives offer a 360-degree view of the events, allowing readers to piece together the puzzle while being wary of unreliable narrators.
Taylor’s writing shines in her ability to blend dark themes with moments of humor, particularly in the depiction of school-run politics. But there are no Julia’s or Amanda’s in this story.
Whilst working full time, and struggling to put this down, it certainly made me savour every last drop of this epic tale.
In conclusion, C.L. Taylor’s latest offering is a testament to her prowess in crafting psychological thrillers that resonate with readers, making It’s Always the Husband a must-read for 2025.

Absolutely this book is a gripping read. It is a masterclass in tension and suspense, expertly weaving themes of obsession and revenge that keep you on the edge of your seat. Taylor's clever and original storytelling hooks you from the very first page, making it impossible to put down. Each twist feels spine-chillingly unpredictable, leaving you breathless as you unravel the characters' dark secrets. If you love writing that immerses you in a world of intrigue and emotional depth, this author is one to watch! Highly recommended.

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review-
Jude moves next door to Will but rumors are that Will murdered his wife and lover. Does she need to worry as she feels them getting closer?
A group of people pick up their children each day and there are always the gossips. They tell her to stay away from Will etc.
can Jude uncover the truth about Will or should she worry she will be the next?

It was interesting that this was told from different viewpoints as it enabled the reader to get to know the characters to a greater depth. It begins with a new to the school mam on the school run, trying to find her place in the school yard hierarchy and her blooming relationship with a single dad. Rumours start to build about Will, the dad, and how his first wife died and then his partner went missing. Jude tries to investigate, using a diary and clues from the other mams, with lots of red herrings and misdirection along the way. We learn that Victoria is not quite the alpha female she comes across as and that Sorrel is not the mouse she first seems. There are maybe a few too many characters, which was confusing at times to keep up with. The ending is a good twist, even if you had already worked it out!
Thanks for the ARC NetGalley.

You can always rely on C.L. Taylor to create multi-layered psychological thrillers with well-developed characters. It’s Always The Husband is narrated from the points of view of several school mums, but the principle one is Jude, who arrives in small-town Lowbridge after a recent divorce. She’s thrust straight into the school gate dramas when she befriends Will, a single father. Gossip is rife because Will has suffered the loss of two partners. There are plenty of twists and turns and surprising plot developments. At times, I found it hard to keep up with all of the different characters. There are a lot of them, and this book requires more concentration than many thrillers, but it’s worth the effort.
Thank you to C.L. Taylor, Avon Books and Netgalley for my advance copy.

I have read all of C. L Taylor’s books so couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one and wow wow wow it was absolutely fantastic and definitely her best one yet.
Jude and her daughter Betsy are new to the area of Lowbridge and Jude has to face the dreaded school run and the clique of mothers. She soon gets talking to Will single dad to Millie who seems to be the hot topic of gossip and rumours.
What follows is a rollercoaster of a story which I couldn’t put down, it was just so well written.
The characters are excellent and my opinion of some of them changed dramatically as the book progressed.
The story was told from multiple viewpoints which I think really added to the suspense of the story and gave a much better insight into some of the characters.
Overall this is a fantastic 5 star read which will have you gripped from the first page.
Thanks to NetGalley, C.L Taylor and Avon Books UK for an advance copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

The book follows Jude, who moves to a small community and follows her and the pta moms whose friendships are complicated and everyone has something to hide. Jude becomes acquainted with Will, many who are suspicious that WIll had something to do with the deaths of his first 2 wives. Can Jude trust him? She digs deeper into his life before and tries to uncover the truth
This is a fast-paced thriller, filled with secrets, scandals and shifting perspectives. I enjoyed this from the beginning and it kept me wanting to read more. It had some twists that keep you hooked. I liked the characters and even the crazy moms! This one is worth the read
