Description
Projects with one star are the easiest and ideal for beginners. Two-star projects are a little more complex, and the ones with three stars are the most advanced. Kids can build their sculpting expertise with simpler figures such as the clown, octopus, and butterfly and then move on to the frog, dragon, and peacock. Meanwhile, they'll develop skills that will help them express their personal creativity.

A great book for budding sculptors with ideas for creating sand sculptures at three different levels of difficulty. There are six easy, seven middle and five harder different projects. Guidance on tools, supplies, techniques and tips are given before the projects. The projects instructions are clearly given, step by step, complete with photographs of what should be done at each step. Most projects have eight steps (the exceptions to this are the octopus which only has seven whilst the peacock has sixteen!) On many of the projects there may be helpful tips or possible extension ideas that could be used. These projects are ones children will find appealing and be inspired by and there is nothing to stop readers finding alternative media in which to carry them out, too!
Thanks to the author and publishers for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this in exchange for this, an honest review.
Such a fun idea! I've tried sculpting in sand before, but only with beach sand - never with sculpting sand. This book includes lots of information about how to handle the sand, which tools to use, how to add texture etc. The instructions for each project are clear and concise, with photos to illustrate each step. The patterns span from the very easy (a clown face) to the down-right intricate! (a peacock)
This is a great book for kids (and grownups too!) and the projects can easily be transferred to play-doh or clay if sculpture sand isn't readily available. I would have appreciated a few hints as to how to transfer these techniques to "ordinary" sand though.
Review will be posted 1/23/15 Sand Play is a book all about sculpting sand, which is a special kind of sand that doesn't dry out and can easily be molded. It is also quick and easy to clean up and is reusable. The book separates the projects bu their difficulty - which are ranked by 1-3 stars. There are 6 1-star projects, 7 2-star projects and 3-star projects and instructions in the book. There is also a lit of tools and supplies that would be beneficial to have. (The book also recommends that if you use any tools from the kitchen that you then continue to only use them for sand and not bring them back into the kitchen to be used for eating so keep that in mind!) Each project has step by step photo instructions. I'd love to try to make the crab or the monkey featured in this book!
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review. I was not otherwise compensated.
Sand Play by Terry Taylor is a super fun book with many ideas for how to mold craft sand. I was hoping this book would help us use sand from the beach. I know that not everyone lives near the beach, but I was hoping. That was the only complaint I had. Terry used tools from around the house, like straws or a butter knife. She also used cookie cutters. This book is an excellent way for kids who want to make cookies all the time, to create something and practice their techniques. Also using the special sand that you buy in stores, it is less messy.
I received a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.
This was a great idea book. It was easy to read, and the pictures were detailed enough that the 10 year old that I gave it to could understand it. He goes back to it so much, I bough him the actual paper copy.
