For some twenty-three different sports this book acts as a picture word primer for each sport. It makes explaining terms relating to these sports in a clear and humorous manner that children will find easy to interpret.
It has annotated, brightly coloured illustrations to depict the words and phrases, in effect giving a quick guide to each sport and the terms, equipment, roles and moves associated with it. There are also humorous comments included, making it a fun book for children. For instance, someone challenges the person in basketball by saying, “Just try to get by me!” The author admits to enjoying sports and in this book he shares this love and inspires children to possibly have a go at a sport they might not previously have considered.
At half time there are fun puzzles to solve- counting tennis balls, finding other things for three characters. At the end there are descriptions of the sports included in the primer, indicating the nature of the sport and what is involved for participants. There is also a glossary explaining some of the terms used elsewhere in the book and a bibliography. This is the author’s first picture book and was originally published in French. The version I read was in English!
