Description

Seventy new science experiments in Candy Experiments 2 will have kids happily pouring their candy down the drain and learning some basic science along the way. This fun, colorful book presents a brilliant use of Valentine's, Easter, Halloween, and other holiday candy!

Following the success of the first Candy Experiments, this all-new collection presents more ways to destroy store-bought candy and learn some science in the process. Candy Experiments 2 delivers fun science facts from the perspective of a real mom in the kitchen doing crazy things with brand-name store-bought candy.

Marshmallows, cotton candy, Pixy Stix, Jawbreakers, Pop Rocks, gummi candy, chocolate, and even soda provide good excuses to get destructive in the kitchen. Do Peeps dissolve when you drop them into very hot water? Can you make gummi candy disappear in water? What happens to cotton candy when you dip it in oil?

Candy Experiments 2 is full of new ideas for learning science through candy.  Each experiment includes basic explanations of the relevant science. The book is written for children between the ages of 7 and 10, though older and younger ages will enjoy it as well.

This book is a great collection of scientific experiments to carry out on candy (aka sweets in the UK!), beautifully presented with sound scientific principles used throughout and readers encouraged to analyse and interpret their findings.

With nine different sections ranging from ‘Acids and Bases’ to ‘Density’ and ‘Just for Fun’, this book contains some seventy different experiments, most involving sweets or candy, for children to carry out. It starts off with some simple but essential safety guidelines, moves on to scientific processes and tips to help come up with creating good science fair projects, including links to a website to help with this.

Each of the nine sections starts by sharing facts and theories relating to that section’s scientific concept. Then the fun starts with the actual experiments. These are well presented with an indication of the time required, the skill level, the question being investigated, what you will need and what to do. When adult supervision is required, the reader will find the skill level is shown as ‘Get a grown-up’. What is happening is then explained and more fun activities or science fair ideas to follow up this experiment are suggested. When new vocabulary is introduced, these are highlighted and explained. Beautiful images are used throughout the book to help illustrate and enhance the text. The book also has a contents page and index.

Teachers and parents take a look at this - a sweet way to inspire young scientists to investigate further!

Will be posted Feb 2015 Candy Experiments 2 contains over 50 science experiments related to CANDY! (And a note to never heat a jawbreaker!) The book is a lot of fun and shows you how much time it will take for you to do each of the experiments and what skill level is needed. It also lists what supplies you need, what you need to do to make the experiment work and what is actually happening related to science. And of course, photos of what happens during the experiments in case you don't want to try them yourself. (I didn't try any myself but I totally want to have a Peep sword fight in the microwave next Easter!) This book is a ton of fun to read and probably even more fun to try out! I love science and anything that makes science fun is totally awesome in my book :) A great way to get kids interested in Science and a lot of great ideas for potential science fair things!

I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.

I saw all kinds of suggestions for dealing with Halloween candy, from selling it to local dentists to eating a piece a day for a few days and donating what was left to (my favorite) freezing it to use in dessert recipes that call for chopped up candy bars.

My plan was to do a bunch of the experiments from Candy Experiments by Loralee Leavitt.

My two younger boys love doing experiments, especially that one where you fill a jar with muddy water and wait for it to settle into layers. I don't think they've ever left a jar alone long enough for it to work the way its supposed to, but filling the jar and shaking it up makes them happy.

This book is full of simple experiments that don't require much preparation. The author even offers alternatives to a microwave (for the two or three of us families living without one!)

I was thrilled to find out that there's a second book, Candy Experiments 2. That one has a strong focus on science fair projects as opposed to science demonstrations, which are what you'll find in the first book. (The boys and I are after science demonstrations.) Both books explain what's causing the reaction you get. I don't expect the boys to get deep scientific understanding from either book, but they'll be perfect for those days when they wants to make something happen.

Disclosure -- I found Candy Experiments on my own. The publisher provided me with an ARC of Candy Experiments 2.

Easy and fun science experiments with candy you can do at home. Honestly you probably have most of the necessary items in your cabinets. Nothing too extravagant or hard to find and great family fun to be had!

Love the mix of candy and science - makes it fun for kids. My boys loved this book! I have three boys age 5-9 and they each had to do the experiments. Loved watching the excitement on my childrens faces!

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

I absolutely loved the experiments in this book and the fun, fool-proof approach to teaching chemistry through candy! As a homeschooler, this was the ideal addition to our science curriculum, as all the experiments are easy to perform in your own kitchen with minimal preparation.

Through usage of children's favorite sweets, this book entices them and teaches them to perform science experiments and demonstrations. Young readers will be attracted by the bright colorful fonts and images. Teachers and parents will love that time and skill level are included for each experiment. In addition, many experiments have suggestions on how to take the experiment further. A truly great book to get children interested in science fairs and experiments.
