Description
Merry Strand is spinning her wheels in her rural mountain hometown when Fritz Forth, her late father's attorney, suddenly appears with a strange and wonderful proposition. Merry has a substantial inheritance coming, he says… but it's conditional. Merry must accompany Fritz to the Atlantic coast and complete a series of life-improving tasks to earn her windfall. Like a fussy fairy godfather, Fritz promises to help Merry, though he makes it clear that he'd really rather not.
Arriving on an abandoned barrier island in the offseason, Merry meets her curmudgeonly Uncle Max, who is hoping to steal her inheritance. Jack Morningstar, a depressed Midwestern widower, numbly occupies the beach house next door. Added to the mix are a philosophical dead Englishman, a crazy mountain town radio therapist, a suicidal software engineer, a matchmaking dog, and, possibly, a ghost.
With empathy and wit, Rachel Michael Arends chronicles the ups and downs and eventual transformations of her richly drawn characters as they learn to help each other, and ultimately, to help themselves.

This was a delightful, light-hearted read. Sure the story was fairly predictable and I guessed the main mysteries long before they were revealed to Merry, the main character, but that's ok. It was fun watching the story unfold and wondering when everyone would guess the big secrets. (and I always feel somewhat smug when I guess them first! ha)
The characters are richly drawn and believable - I could practically hear Merry's mountain-girl twang and Fritz's posh English accent. The location is a character in itself; I could smell the ocean air and hear the waves crashing. This is a Cinderella story from the get-go - - complete with Prince Charming living next door.
This is a great beach read - - or a fireside one!
My oh My, what can I say about this story? Lots of twists and turns on the path for Merry to travel down. I really liked that the author took the time to develop the emotional connects between Merry and Jack, and with Fritz and Max too. A very sweet story of a young woman who discovers a new path in life, from her new family and new job and new love. A well told story that held my interest throughout, and gave me a few surprises at the end. Very much recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.
