Description

When the government unleashes an army of police to stop voters at any cost, Laia has a choice. Will she be strong enough to stand up for her family and the life she dreams of?

Barcelona and Catalunya 2017. At just fourteen, Laia's father is thrown in jail for a human rights protest. Weeks before the independence referendum when police cracked down on voters with extraordinary violence.

Laia’s mother is devoted to her father's legal case, and after her best friend betrays her, Laia feels isolated. She turns to her great aunt and realises she’s hiding a secret, and when an unlikely classmate comes into her life, bit by bit, her eyes are opened.

Two years pass with Laia’s father and many Catalan politicians in jail. Eventually, they are handed down sentences, longer than some murderers, leading to human rights organisations calling for their release.

Barcelona erupts. Laia is rocked to her core as she witnesses just how far the Spanish police will go to keep its grip on Catalunya. A dangerous path opens up to Laia, which if she takes it, everything she cares about will be threatened.

When the government unleashes an army of police to stop voters at any cost, Laia has a choice. Will she be strong enough to stand up for her family and the life she dreams of?

A Note From the Publisher

This is a novel about human rights and democracy set in the iconic city of Barcelona. Feedback has been strong from arc and beta readers in the UK, Spain and Australia to date.

In 2017 the police cracked down on voters with extraordinary violence. Old women were tossed about like rag dolls, and peaceful voters with their arms held high, were struck by police batons. Barcelona airport was shut down, with young protestors acting out in civil disobedience and the police responding with extreme force.

Shocking scenes made global media headlines for over two years. Scenes you would never expect coming out of Western Europe.

We interviewed journalists, activists, town mayors, teachers, and more. This is their story.

This is an eye-opening read, but it's also a story of resilience and hope.

Over a million people marched on Barcelona for years, to have their voices heard. To date, there are a few documentaries on Netflix about this topic, but they are somewhat dry. This is the first work of fiction about this topic.

Written by an award-winning author.
