Description

Sideways 3 Chile is the third, and final, novel in the trilogy that began with Sideways -- which became the award-winning movie of the same title by Oscar-winning director Alexander Payne. In 2010, Rex Pickett released the sequel to Sideways, entitled Vertical, which won the 2011 Gold Medal for Fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards. The 2004 movie is based on Rex Pickett’s first novel in his cult-classic trilogy. The movie follows two men in their forties, portrayed by actors Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, who take a week-long road trip to Santa Barbara County Wine Country. Sideways, the movie, won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and was nominated for four other awards. In the fall of 2012, the government of Chile, in conjunction with Wines of Chile, invited Rex to travel the length and breadth of their country, focusing on their emerging wine regions, and researching the writing of a third book in the Sideways series. Sideways 3 Chile finds our main protagonist Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti in the original film) running out of money, but still surviving on the fumes of a past, but fleeting, fame. Miles is offered an opportunity by a reputable magazine to write an article about the diverse wine regions of the country of Chile and he jumps at the chance.

REX PICKETT (Author/ Filmmaker/ Director/ Playwright) Most recently, Rex Pickett was contacted by the De Angelis Group, a large TV/Film entity based in Italy, and has been offered to travel there and write an original screenplay that will hopefully build a new Sideways brand. eOne Entertainment optioned a treatment titled Addicted USA, which is currently in development as a scripted TV show.

Pickett has also written and directed two feature films, numerous screenplays, TV pilots, and a hit play staged after his novel Sideways. Pickett currently resides in La Jolla, CA.

“OK - I'm a big fan of Sideways (and the sequel Vertical for that matter) and I've found both the book and movie to be great. I'm also one of the fortunate ones to have seen Sideways the play, which also rocked. So while I was already pumped to read Sideways 3 I think it's a tribute to author Pickett that he can keep his characters Miles and Jack so fresh through now three different mediums. Instead of replicating his past success, Pickett seems determined to want to go in another direction with his characters. The story, told in first person from the standpoint of Miles, is clearly all Miles's story this time. It's heartfelt and personal and often quite moving. Pickett is one of those novelists who writes in a personal vein. He doesn't hold anything back. He can whipsaw from the raucously comedic to the gloomily introspective in a heartbeat. There are many laugh-out-loud moments in the novel, but it's how it tugs the heart in the end that I found so endearing, and enduring.” - J. Blum

“Rex Pickett's second sequel to Sideways just may be his best book yet: packed with philosophical musings, yet never lacking in the hilarious set piece department (I will not give them away!). Miles Raymond is -- as usual -- terrified of being alone, and -- as usual -- drowns his panic in wine, women, and Xanax. Offered a trip to explore Chile's protean wine regions, he embarks on an adventure that makes the one in Sideways look tame. Several mishaps, a few oxen, earthquakes, couplings, and one Fiat 500 later, Miles comes to the realization that things don't constitute happiness: it's love, particularly with the person who most understands you. For all the Miles/Maya fans out there (of which I am surely President) this book is both a sweet gift and a dream come true. And Jack is back! It's also beautifully written, with an ear for the depth of language we're seldom privy to nowadays. All in all: an incredibly honest, authentic peek into the soul of one of our best American writers”. -Amazon Customer

“The third and final book in the "Sideways" series is a fitting end for a trilogy that began with the comic hijinks of one Miles and Jack in the now famous Santa Ynez Valley -- made famous by the movie of the same title by Alexander Payne -- but then went into deeper territory with "Vertical," Pickett's ambitious, possibly even better, or more literary, 2011 follow-up. Now comes "Sideways 3 Chile," which finds a more introspective Miles, still humorous, still living by the seat of his pants, wiser, but maybe just as gullible, anxiety-ridden, fatalistic, sarcastic, sardonic, as ever before. Shorter than "Vertical" by half, and set in the country of Chile, Miles Raymond, after a humiliating opening where he's outed by the husband of a married women he's having an affair with, and then ends up on a corporate outing whilst playing out his last minute of his 15 minutes of fame, a chance magazine assigment has him journeying to the country of Chile. It is in Chile that the novel opens up and gains a kind of grandeur as Miles (Paul Giamatti in the movie) and the Spanish girlfriend from "Vertical" journey through Chile's fascinating wine regions. At some point, the Spanish girl decamps and Jack jets down to give Miles some moral support. But, make no mistake, Pickett's Miles is the iconic character of the movie, and it is Miles whom we entrust our attention to, and it's to the reader that Pickett, through Miles in the first person narration, entrusts his soul to. Personal, deeply felt, this is not a retread like "The Hangover" movies, but a more mature Miles, one who has learned from the past -- we hope! -- and is ready for a new life in a new region of the world: the exotic and breathtaking country of Chile. Unexpected, surprising, and, at novel's end, almost sweepingly romantic. Took me aback, frankly.” – BarefootInTheHead

“Loved it! I am a fan, bought this one as an ebook. Now it's time to go drink some wine. Perhaps an Argentine Malbec. Sadly, I have no Chile wines.....” - Alex Zandria "alexandria789" (rural Ohio, USA)
