Description
Ashley Hawthorne thinks of herself as the Cuckoo Girl. No matter where she is it feels like she doesn’t quite belong.
Everything changes when her eccentric aunt, Elspeth Grimm, leaves her the key to a safety deposit box in a bank that was destroyed during the Blitz. That box contains the first part of her true inheritance: an umbrella, a battered old notebook, a pair of aviator’s goggles and a locket. Each of these gifts is a unique part of who she really is.
Elspeth is a Grimm, a descendent of the brothers who purged this world of monsters by trapping them within the Concord. She is the Oracle. A keeper of all the knowledge we have amassed about the creatures of the Fae and other worlds. And someone intent on destroying the Concord has murdered her!
When Ashley looks through the goggles that night she sees curious creatures on the roof of the house across the street watching her. To the naked eye they look like crows but they are not. It is the first glimpse of the other place—the place where she will finally belong.
The journal is crammed full of things, but there’s no actual writing in it. Ash decides she’s going to use the book as a journal, and begins the first entry: My name is Ashley Hawthorne. The ink fades so she writes it again. My name is Ashley Hawthorne. Again the ink fades. She tries again and again until the ink scratches out an entirely different first line: That is not who you are!

Blckwater Blaze is after the girl but with so many protectors he can't get to her but when she is attacked by something else, Blackwater Blaze has no doubt he's been betrayed by Redhart Jax. So together they journey to the Moonlands to find and destroy the king.
Pretty good book but i did find myself skipping through most of the stuff. I felt nothing for Ashley or Blaze in particular.. The plot was awesome but a teeny bit too simple. That's pretty much it for the negatives.
The fact that the whole world functions on moons was enough to intrigue me. The world building is vivid and entrancing and so beautifully described you actually feel like you're in another world. Ashley's bravery to save her world was pretty cool but i think what i liked the most was the ending. A pretty good cliffhanger!
Just a quick thin-i LOVE THOSE NAMES! Redhart Jaz, Blackwater Blaze and Ashkillion! Man i wish people in our world were named like that!
Savile is definitely making his way up the YA ranks!
Nicely written story. Enjoyed it a lot. Strong characters. Interesting plot.
I really enjoyed this story. Ash caught my attention right away when we see her painting her mural. And "Al" is the perfect swoon worthy werewolf. Looking forward to read what happens to them next.
In modern day London we meet Ashley Hawthorne, a wonderfully run of the mill school girl. With the death of her aunt we embark on a journey that is everything but run of the mill. I dont want to spoil any part of the story, but you'll absolutely enjoy meeting Ashley's family and friends as she learns who she really is and who she isn't. I'm looking forward to book #2
I have not read anything by this author but was drawn to the book by its beautiful cover. I was not sure I'd enjoy it after reading the first chapter as it didn't seem to be my type of genre. However, I was quickly enthralled by the well written story. A great plot, no grammatical errors like many of today's book have (as if they are rushed to publication) and likeable characters. Yes, I even did a 180 on Blaze. I particularly liked the fact that our heroine doesn't blindly accept the responsibility thrust upon her. She was totally believable. I am looking forward to Book 2 in this series. Bravo for a job well done!
Just love the cover! The story draws you in. A great YA adventure! Hope there is a sequel because I really want to know what happen next!
This is fantasy for true fans of the genre. Once the reader acclimates to the creatures and politics of Ashley's true home with seven moons, the ride becomes more engaging and exciting. While some pieces are rather predictable, others are surprising. The ending is complete enough - but leaves PLENTY of room for a sequel as the current problem is resolved, but Ashley is looking the next in the eye - literally!
Some Britishisms may be a bit confusing for American readers, but it adds authenticity to the London setting.
Well written, strong characters. Fun read.
highly recommend.
Ashley is a teenage girl trying to traverse changing into a new school and being a teen when the fairy world and its horrors comes crashing in around her. You see, Ashley is the true heir to rule the fairy realm but the king, aka her father she never knew, is set on making her truly dead.
I was initially grabbed by this incredibly imaginative story and it held me for quite a while; I found as the story progressed so did it's pull. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed it but the first ½ was definitely more magnetic than the second.
The characters are written with a vivid flare, popping them right off the pages and into your imagination.
Overall, I found the story to be an easy read and entertaining with character names I couldn't help but love. Moonlands is a great new fantasy series for the younger or young at heart reader. 3.5 Stars.
I received this new release copy of Moonlands from BadPress in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for republication April 17, 2015.
I received this book form the publishers for an honest review - so this is what i shall do ...............................OMG thank you sooo much, i have found another author that i have put on my 'read again' authors, and whilst doing a little research into his writing background , found out that he is indeed quite a writer, with masses of experience and a big circulating volume of work to be read.
I read this book whilst travelling, on planes and trains, so i was a captive audience and with no where else to go, i delved into this story. From the very beginning i was captured, i am a reader that can be gripped by the first couple of chapters and then lose interest quickly, but this book had me!
The cover was the actual reason why i requested this novel and thank goodness for a pretty cover, as i am so thankful that i been introduced to Steven Savile's writing, it was fluid and a pleasure to read, he describes his visions in a way that immediately transports you into the book without too much brain power, There was no reason for me to back track as the plot line was easy to follow. The characters were a joy to come across and loved every minute of my reading experience. There was nothing that i can say was negative for me, I read this on my kindle, but would love a physical copy to adorn my shelves.
After all that i guess you want to know what its all about?!!
The story is set in London and revolves around a Teenager called Ashley, who seemingly appears to be an ordinary young lady, one day she has to go to a reading of a will from an 'auntie' that has recently passed away, she receives a letter and a key and adventures ensues, with magic portals ancient fae kingdoms, supernatural killers and of course there is romance, what YA book these days does not have love in it?
If you love YA Fantasy i strongly suggest that you read this, you will not be disappointed. I for one will defiantly be a Steven Savile follower.
Ash, as a typical teen, has no idea of who she really is or her place in this world and things are only going to get worse. when her Aunt dies and she attends the reading of the will she is given an envelope left for her with two objects in it. This marks the beginning of her adventure and as this tale plays out her story get darker and more complex. i loved the characters in this story but felt that a little more time could have been spent on their back stories, especially her protectors. also i felt that her friend Mel needed a bit more love and attention. but overall a good read for teens that i would highly recommend.
**I received this copy from NetGalley in return for an honest Amazon review.**
This book vastly exceeded my expectations. It truly had a unique premise that really drew me in. Although it is apparent that Moonlands is a young adult novel, Savile writes in a manner that does not limit the age-range of his readers, and many adults would be able to find enjoyment in this book as well. The author’s writing is detailed and wonderfully descriptive. He brings the world that writes about to life, and with that is able to create intricate and believable worlds that draws his readers in.
The characters that Savile has brought to life are colorful, fascinating, and have distinctly vibrant personalities. He does a wonderful job capturing the essence of each character – particularly with Ashley. Ashley is a young girl who is attempting to fit into her high school life, when a new world of imaginative ideas and horrors are thrust upon her. Ashley has many endearing qualities that allow the reader to really connect with her and become personally interested in what is going on in her life and the story. The rest of the characters are also extremely entertaining, and bring a great deal of life to the story as well – however, I did feel that there could have been a bit more depth and development in the characters.
My only critique with Savile’s writing is his occasionally speedy narrative. For the most part, the author expands upon necessary topics and settings in a well-paced manner for readers to understand. However, there are also many times in which I felt the story was becoming just a bit too rushed, and there was no time for the reader to become acquainted with what was occurring before moving on to something new. There were definitely times when I feel that Savile should have eased up on the action and fleshed out the character or plot just a little bit more.
Overall, I would have to give this boo four stars. It was extremely well-written and entertaining, but it just didn’t quite have that ‘wow’ factor that earns five stars. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in fantasy!
I LOVED this book. Can I fill my review with that repeated sentence? It was a fairy tale, a coming of age story and it was about a GIRL! I mean how heroines do we see in books these days? Answer: Not enough. There's plenty of coming of age stories out there about boys - and Savile has written a darn good one of those, btw. But, for a guy to be able to write about a strong female character is pretty freaking cool in my book.
MOONLANDS is a story that blends every story you ever heard of into one big melting pot of a wonderful reading experience. The Grimm Brothers play a major as you'll be quick to discover, but you'll find brushes from the Star Wars, Alien, Hobbit, Wizard of Oz and other universes as you read through these pages. If you're like me, it won't take long til you reach the end and cry out, "When is the next book coming out?!"
And, no! It's not just for YA. The heroine may be a teen, but the book is for everyone. And I highly recommend it to all.
I was given an e-arc of this book by the publisher in exchange for my review.
What would happen if you thought you were ordinary but then you learned you had extra-ordinary powers as a hidden fairy princess? What if the bad guy (or bad wolf) in the story became your protector? This was an extremely good book that I enjoyed quite a bit. It was clever and unusual and I ended up loving the characters. I particularly fell in love with the "bad guy" and main characters mother. I always enjoy seeing a "bad guy" slowly "turn good". I highly recommend this book.
This was such a pleasant surprise. I wasn't sure what to think before starting it because I've read some pretty mixed reviews but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It was such an adventurous and engaging read.
The summary sums it up perfectly so let's get right to my thoughts.
Plot wise, it was really fast paced and entertaining. The idea of a princess who doesn't know she's a princess isn't exactly a new one but the author makes it his own with the introduction of shifters and a whole new world. I loved finding out everything alongside Ash because it brought me into the story.
Character wise, Ash is awesome. She is a typical 15 yr old whose life changes immensely with just one moment. When she is told what she is, she doesn't immediately accept it, which I liked. I also loved that Ash, despite everything, stays true to herself. She was strong, capable and likable, which is always a major plus.
Then we have Blackwater Blaze. He is sent to assassinate the girl but is betrayed so ends up being her protector. He was super scary but also super hot!! Lol. I loved seeing the book from his POV as well.
There are also a lot of secondary characters that are part of Ashs life who watch over her and protect her. All were well written and I loved seeing who else was part of her life.
The world building in this was amazing. Both worlds are vividly described and richly detailed. Ashs' home world was awesome and the author detailed it to perfection. The land, animals and creatures were woven into the story seamlessly.
In all an impressive book. It grabbed me from the start and wouldn't let go. From it's intricately woven story to it's captivating characters, Moonlands is a must read. I fell in love with this world and can only hope we see more from it and it's characters.
