Description
Early one morning in the quiet English village of Larking, the body of a woman named Mrs. Jenkins is found in the road. Miles away, her daughter, Henrietta, receives the bad news while working in the university library. Poor Mrs. Jenkins appears to have been the victim of a horrible car accident.
When an autopsy proves not only that this was no accident but also that Mrs. Jenkins had never had a child, young Henrietta’s life is thrown upside down. If she’s not Mrs. Jenkins’s daughter, then who is she? It’s up to Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan of the Calleshire police force to bring the murderer to justice—and a sense of order back to Henrietta’s life.
Proclaimed by the New York Times in 1968 to be one of the year’s best books, Henrietta Who? is a first-order English whodunit that’ll keep you guessing until the end.

Henrietta Who? is a remarkable mystery novel that stands the test of time. Clever and complex, it will keep armchair detectives guessing whodunit until the very end.
After Henrietta Jenkins's mother is killed in what appears to be a hit and run, the post mortem stirs up more questions than it answers. Not only was the accident no accident, Grace Jenkins never had a child. Who then is Henrietta and what is the link between her identity and Grace's death? Detective Inspector Sloan of the Calleshire police must sift through the sparse and enigmatic clues to determine Henrietta's parentage and flush an unscrupulous murderer into the open.
Detective Inspector Sloan approaches the case with patience and perception. Careful consideration of the available evidence and questioning of potentially knowledgeable parties play an important role in bringing the case to a successful conclusion. Henrietta and her fiancé Bill provide assistance through their own efforts in seeking her identity. Bill is a wonderful foil for Henrietta. Although she is upset and confused after learning that her mother was not her mother, Bill is relaxed and supportive. He loves Henrietta, not her name or her parentage. In his eyes, pedigree is only important if you are an Aberdeen Angus bull. His gentle sense of humor and pragmatism infuse the couple's relationship with a romantic feel even during moments of tension.
Aird's fluid writing style makes Henrietta Who? a fast fun read. When you throw in a complex plot with just enough red herrings and a delightful cast of well developed characters, the end result is a novel that will be enjoyed by British mystery fans of all ages. It is a pleasure to see this classic British police procedural released in ebook form.
