Description
In Nick Holdstock's The Casualties, a man recounts the final weeks of his neighborhood before the apocalyptic event that only a few of the eccentric residents will survive.
Samuel Clark likes secrets. He wants to know the hidden stories of the bizarre characters on the little streets of Edinburgh, Scotland. He wants to know about a nymphomaniac, a man who lives under a bridge, a girl with a cracked face. He wants to uncover their histories because he has secrets of his own. He believes, as people do, that he is able to change. He believes, as the whole world does, that there is plenty of time to solve his problems. But Samuel Clark and the rest of the world are wrong. Change and tragedy are going to scream into his and everyone's lives. It will be a great transformation, a radical change; and it just might be worth the cost.
Written by a rising literary star whose work has been published in notoriously selective publications such as n+1 and The Southern Review, The Casualties is an ambitious debut novel that explores how we see ourselves, our past and our possible futures. It asks the biggest question: How can we be saved?

There are plenty of weird folks living in Edinburgh. Samuel Clark should know; he’s one of them. Still, Samuel believes if he gets to know all the other weird denizens of his city (the guy who sleeps under the bridge, the sex addict, etc), he can figure out what went wrong with them and somehow fix himself. It’s human nature to strive for something better, and its human nature to think you have plenty of time to do it. Unfortunately, time is running out, not just for Samuel but for everyone, weird or not.
This is a book that defies description by category or genre. Is it apocalyptic, Dystopian, memoir? Maybe its all three with a few other genres thrown in; whatever it is, it’s darn good reading and the kind of book that stays with you long after you’ve finished i
Every once in awhile, I begin reading a book and just know it be a favorite! This will fit nicely into that category!!! The Casualties gripped me from the first page and kept things moving to the very last line! Cannot wait to discuss with other readers!!!
The Casualties is set in Edinburgh, Scotland. A fairly small town, it is full of odd characters and the lead character, Samuel Clark, sets out to discover the stories behind their lives. Clark believes that if he can discover their secrets he will better understand human nature, fixing them and himself. As all people do, he believes he has an infinite amount of time to become a better person. What he doesn't know is that an apocalyptic event is about to take place with a life or death struggle to survive.
