Description
Budding Reader eBooks use an innovative format to ease children into reading. Using research-based best practices identified by the National Reading Panel, each of the five Budding Reader eBook sets (one for each short vowel sound) tells an original story over the course of ten books. Previewing a book dramatically improves reading comprehension, so Book 1 in each set is a wordless picture book which introduces the story through colorful illustrations. Repetition aids brain development, so the story is retold in Books 2-10 with an ever-expanding vocabulary. By repeating words and gradually adding new ones, Budding Reader eBooks help new readers (even reluctant ones) experience success from the very start.
In total, the Budding Reader eBook series introduces more than 60 simple words including dozens of common sight words. Learning is reinforced with free companion writing worksheets (available at buddingreader.com) which provide a multisensory experience and enable children to practice both reading and writing. A free parent guide with tips for working with new readers is also available on the website.
The first set in the series, Cat and Rat, introduces the short “a” vowel sound and is designed to be a child’s very first reader. With only eleven words (and, at, can, cat, look, rat, see, stop, that, the, you) introduced over the course of ten books, Cat and Rat aims to provide even the most reluctant reader with a positive first introduction to reading.
Series:
•Set 1: Cat and Rat (Short a; 11 words)
•Set 2: Wit and Kit (Short i; 17 words)
•Set 3: Bugs (Short u; 18 words)
•Set 4: Hop! (Short o; 18 words)
•Set 5: Hens (Short e; 22 words)
For every eBook set sold, Budding Reader donates one to a child in need. One for You. One for the World. A Better World with Every Purchase.

Truly delightful early reader! The illustrations ate large and easy to see. With only one word, at the end, "read to me"'s an make up stories from their own imagination, n parents and grandparents can insert description nd dialogues. Great learn-to-read series.
This book set it AMAZING! I have been searching for a basic introduction to reading set for my 4 year old, and this is definitely it! It simply builds on sight words and doesn't overwhelm the children. With my daughter's current sight word base, she was able to read books 1-5 without any help at all, and she was so proud. It gave her a read confidence boost! PERFECT books!!!
This book set is perfect for beginning or struggling readers.
Basically, there are 10 copies of the same book with increasing difficulty. The first book begins with illustrations only. The second book uses the same illustrations and includes the sight word "see" with varying punctuation. Each book adds a new high frequency work (or two) to make it slightly more difficult.
As an elementary teacher, I can say this is perfect for struggling readers.
This is a wonderful way to teach simple reading to a young child. The concept starts with pictures only and then adds words in sequence through the same story. It starts with only a couple of words and becomes more complex. By the end of the book, the child is reading full sentences, including questions. While the end result is similar to the old “See Spot Run” type of book, the practice of adding words to the same story is really interesting and different. It allows the child the ability to finish the story using the actual words being studied.
Set 1 deals with the concepts and look and see as well as a number of words at that a short a sound. The story is about a cat and a rat and how they learn to share. The illustrations are colorful and fun to look at. I plan to pick up the entire set for my grandchildren.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
There is a lot to love about this series of books! I work with children in Kindergarten, and I can tell you that by the time children finish their kindergarten year, most of them can read and write. This set would be a big help, not only to children who are lagging behind their peers, but also for pre-school aged children.
The first book had photos without words giving parents a wonderful opportunity to "picture walk, " and discuss what is in the photo. As you continue through the series, the same photos are used, and more words are added. The repetition gives the child the opportunity to become familiar with the words.
The author also has a website with "freebies" and you can print helpful worksheets to use along with the books.
. I had similar books for my son when he was young, and he was surprised, and delighted, to discover that he could read. This is definitely worth purchasing.
This is the first set of books in a series designed to help youngsters (aged 4 to 6 years old) learn to read and this set introduces just 11 words in the course of ten books. In the first book the story is told using pictures and no text - great for promoting discussion, looking for details and finding out what the story is all about. In each subsequent book a limited number of additional text words are introduced until, by the tenth book, the grand total of eleven words have been used. The images in all ten books are consistent, only the text changes. In every book, new words to learn are shown before the story starts on a “Words to Learn” page and, at the end of the book, there is a “Words to Review” page showing all the words used throughout the story in that book. I really like how well the story is illustrated and the manner in which the text and range of vocabulary is increased in small, attainable steps enabling pupils to succeed and build upon their success. As a teacher I would have loved to have these books, especially for children who are struggling to learn to read. I believe this series would help them to gain confidence and have a “can do” attitude, building their self belief in themselves as a reader.
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really like the way the book is set up. Picture reading first, along with predicting what will happen next, without any text=perfect! Then, to add words one at a time--what a great idea.
I find the Cat and Rat series of books to be very engaging. I like that a reader who is challenged for any reason is able to start with no words, learn the story through pictures, then advance through a series of books to learn almost a dozen words. I believe that even very young readers, or kids turned off by reading because it's "too hard" will be able to have success through this series of books.
The illustrations are very colorful and entertain the imagination. On one of the pages the cat looks a little scary, but that's a minor issue. I think the illustrations are perfect for the task of building familiarity with the story. The expressions on the faces of cat and rat go well with the story, too.
I will suggest these books to my local children's librarian as an addition to the early reader section.
A great book for beginning readers or for parents who are preparing their children early to read of for school. The colors are amazing!
