Description
Build confidence in beginning readers—especially reluctant ones—with award-winning Budding Reader eBooks.
Arguably the easiest learn-to-read book series on the market, this phonics series uses an innovative, research-based format to ease children into reading. Previewing a book dramatically improves reading comprehension, so Book 1 is a wordless picture book. Repetition aids brain development, so Books 2-10 retell the story with a gradually expanding vocabulary.
The fifth Budding Reader eBook set, Hens, features the short “e” vowel sound. It introduces 14 new words (are, chick, chicks, egg, eggs, Em, hen, hens, house, in, is, Jen, next, who) and reviews eight simple words previously introduced in the series (at, look, looks, see, that, the, them, to). In total, the series introduces more than 60 simple words including dozens of common sight words.
Bonus Freebies: Learning is reinforced with companion writing worksheets while the Budding Reader parent guide provides tips and tricks for making reading easier and more fun for new readers.
Budding Reader eBooks were developed in consultation with Cecilia Minden, Ph.D., the former Director of Language and Literacy at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. They were illustrated by artist, Doug Oglesby, winner of one Emmy, five Emmy nominations, and three international awards from the Broadcast Designers Association.
Series:
•Set 1: Cat and Rat (Short a; 11 words)
•Set 2: Wit and Kit (Short i; 17 words)
•Set 3: Bugs (Short u; 18 words)
•Set 4: Hop! (Short o; 18 words)
•Set 5: Hens (Short e; 22 words)
For every eBook set sold, Budding Reader donates one to a child in need. One for You. One for the World. A Better World with Every Purchase.

When I taught in Korea, many of my students would memorize their stories quickly, making it hard to evaluate actual reading skills. This pattern of books would have been incredibly helpful in avoiding the memorization while still sticking with the same story long enough to teach sight words well.
May I suggest you add this book to Goodreads?
The author has exquisitely designed this set of primers to entice "budding readers" to develop an interest in learning to read. This five-book set covers the five short vowel sounds, using large and attractive illustrations sure to catch little ones' s attention, and to encourage the concept that story is fun.
I was highly impressed with Book Set 1 in this series so I decided to look at another of these sets. This is another AMAZING set. I love how these books repeat certain sight words and slowly add additional vocabulary words. I found that by doing this it increases the readers chance of success and instills confidence in the new readers. I absolutely LOVE these sets. I strongly recommend them for any beginning reader and plan to use them for my daughter and her younger brother as he reaches reading age.
This book set is perfect for beginning or struggling readers.
Basically, there are 10 copies of the same book with increasing difficulty. The first book begins with illustrations only. The second book uses the same illustrations and includes the sight words "look" and "see" with varying punctuation. Each book adds a new high frequency work (or two) to make it slightly more difficult.
As an elementary teacher, I can say this is perfect for struggling readers.
This is a wonderful way to teach simple reading to a young child. The concept starts with pictures only and then adds words in sequence through the same story. It starts with only a couple of words and by the end of the book, the child is reading full sentences, including questions. While the end result is similar to the old “See Spot Run” type of book, the practice of adding words to the same story is really interesting and different. It allows the child the ability to finish the story using the actual words being studied.
Book 5 deals with the short e sound and is a story about hens and eggs. The illustrations are colorful and fun to look at. I plan to pick up the entire set for my grandchildren.
I received a temporary digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
A great set of book that will help young children learn to read. A great set for parents to help teach their children. Easy to follow. Great picture design and color!
