Description

Kathy Garver, the teenage heartthrob from the hit series Family Affair from 1966–1971, was no one-hit wonder, but a journeywoman actress who appeared in such classic films as Night of the Hunter and The Ten Commandments long before she became a television icon.

This memoir is a recollection of a working actress’s experiences, from the many films, television shows, and stage plays in which she performed, to her second career as a voice-over specialist in popular animated films and audio books. Featuring anecdotes, Hollywood history, and details of her relationships with such stars as Charlton Heston and Jon Provost, Surviving Cissy is a veritable quilt of Kathy’s exciting life.

Kathy Garver is an accomplished and versatile actress whose acting career first took flight with the legendary filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille. She is a UCLA graduate, has attended London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and has proven her talents for comedy and drama with starring roles in My Fair Lady, Sunday in New York, and A Midsummer’s Night Dream. She lives in San Francisco, where she gives classes on audio book narration when she’s not recording an audio book or voiceover herself.

Advance Praise

There are very few former child stars lucky enough to continue working in Hollywood into their adult years. Kathy is one of those, but luck had nothing to do with it. She could have called this book Surviving Cissy: The Art of Reinvention because in it, she proves that she is a master of that craft. And she's gathered experience and friends with each surprising twist and turn her life has taken. -- actor Jon Provost

“Kathy is a surviving member of the fraternity of child actors who has maintained a working relationship with the entertainment industry. Her knowledge and stories about television in the 60’s as well as her experience in the todays business makes for a unique insight into both the industry and her life in it.” —Tony Dow, Wally Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver

“Kathy’s book tells the story of a true Hollywood survivor. For those who’ve often wondered how some of us survived the cold, indifferent, roller-coaster world of show business and Hollywood, this book will illuminate that process and answer that question. Kathy’s book is fun easy read and is full of great stories for fans and non-fans alike.” —Stanley Livingston, Chip Douglas on My Three Sons

I of course watched "Cissy" and enjoyed her. I cannot believe how she not only survived Cissy, but continued to reinvent Kathy so that she stayed relevant in a business that seems to chew women up and spit them out. I have so much respect for Kathy

First let me say I was a great fan of "Family Affair" as a child. So I approached this book with excitement. This is a tale of a child actress whose family saw to it that she kept her feet on the ground and didn't experience many of the negative events that so often happen to child actors.
Offering snippets of life in Hollywood, the book is far tamer than many tell-alls, and the book is the better for it. A delightful tale that is a fun read!
