Description
For Charlotte Nightingale, the question is will anything ever go right? Stuck in a rut, constantly repeating the mistakes that knock her down, what will it take to turn Charlotte’s life, and luck, around?
Enter Kwan, a mysterious stranger who secretly practices Feng Shui in Charlotte’s apartment. Will the ancient art of ”wind and water”—the Chinese philosophy of harmonizing people with their surrounding environment—change Charlotte’s life for the better, or is it all about to get worse?
A laugh-out-loud page turner, "Feng Shui and Charlotte Nightingale" is an enchanting contemporary fable and a captivating debut.
Charlotte Nightingale has the worst luck in the world. Every day is a bad hair day. Her boyfriend’s a snake, her job blows, and her own family seems to hate her.
For over 4,000 years, the Chinese have practiced the ancient art of Feng Shui, a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure health, love, and good fortune for people inhabiting it. The Chinese never met Charlotte Nightingale.
A handsome Chinese food deliveryman/Feng Shui master takes pity on Charlotte and breaks out every tool in his Feng Shui arsenal to bring her some modicum of happiness. It rocks her world all right. Charlotte’s life goes from bad to worse.
When everything comes crashing down and run-of-the-mill catastrophes pale in comparison to recent events, Charlotte unwittingly embarks on a great adventure during which she finds romance, a new wardrobe, bags of money and most importantly, herself.
Feng Shui and Charlotte Nightingale is the laugh-out-loud feel good book of the summer.
About the Author:
Pam Ferderbar was born and raised in Wisconsin, the only child of loving but quirky parents. She moved to Los Angeles, married the first man to see her fall off the turnip truck, wrote a short story that would later become Feng Shui and Charlotte Nightingale, began collecting stray dogs, divorced the man, fell in with a wild group of beachy goddesses, wrote a novel, and then moved back to Wisconsin where the goddesses wear long underwear and cheese hats and so do the men.
A Note From the Publisher

"Pamela Ferderbar is a witty and wonderful writer, and her book is a great reminder of the magic all around us. A delightful and enlightening read for anyone who's ever wondered, "why me?" Read it and get your chi flowing."
Cindy Guidry, author of The Last Single Woman in America.
Pam Ferderbar's debut novel Feng Shui and Charlotte Nightingale is the funniest book I've read in ages. Ferderbar's wit and quirky humor kept me laughing, while underdog Charlotte had me rooting for her. The ending is unexpected - and so so satisfying. I cheered for Charlotte!

Featured Reviews
If you follow my reviews, you’ll know this is the week I dove right in to the deep end of all Romance all the time. Most of the selections have been pretty porntastic up until now.
Oh. Em. Gee. this would make an adorable movie. The entire time I was picturing Kristen Bell as the lead because . . . well, because she is awesome at playing a hot mess female MC in RomComs and I was picturing Harry Shum, Jr. as the male lead because of . . . reasons . . . mainly abdominal muscle reasons.
Feng Shui & Charlotte Nightingale is the story of one poor girl and her terrible luck at life. Charlotte works (and is subsequently fired) from a shitty job, she’s dating a real skeez who dreams of being the next Frank Sinatra, her place is a mess - I mean we’re talking one step away from someone needing to call Adult Protective Services on her behalf and to top it all off there’s never enough running water to even take a dang shower.
Enter Kwan, the delivery boy from the local Chinese restaurant owned by his family. Kwan sets his sights on eliminating some of the disorder from Charlotte’s life in hopes to help align her chi. It doesn’t take long before Charlotte sees her luck turning around. I’ll refrain from ruining everything with [SPOILERS] and leave it with nearly the entire cast coming together in the “bright light city gonna set my soul, gonna set my soul on fire” . . . Sorry. Channeled my inner Elvis for a second there. Anyway, if you’re looking for something super light to read during these final days of summer that is just completely over-the-top and ends with realizing your mandarin duck was there all along this might be the book for you.
ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley!
I loved this book! It was quirky, over the top and laugh out loud funny. I couldn't help being charmed by Charlotte and the hot mess her and her life was. I also loved Kwan (a Chinese delivery man who practices the art of Feng Shui). I had a continuous smile on my face while reading. This is a perfect beach or weekend read. I will be first in line to read more by this author.
This book is delightful! Charlotte is the main character who just can't get ahead. She is saddled with a bad job, a lousy boyfriend and a sister who has all the luck! Things start to change for the better with the arrival of Chinese delivery man, Kwan and his Feng Shui. The characters are very relatable and I couldn't wait to see how everything would turn out!
This was a cute book that had quite a few parts that were funny and while I enjoyed the book, there were parts that were a little far-fetched. I really don't want to leave any spoilers, but what are the odds that 3 separate people that all know 1 of the characters, travel to another large city, either singly or with friends, and all end up in the same hotel? Things like that are why I gave the book 4 stars.
It was fun, Charlotte was rather quirky, to say the least, but it's not something I'd likely read again. If a friend asked, I would recommend it if she was looking for a light, fun read.
I was fortunate enough to read a copy of this through Netgalley and thank the author and publisher for making it available.
Cute rom com. I had a little trouble getting into the book and liking Charlotte. I can't stand a doormat heroine, so I was a little turned off at first. But as Charlotte grew and changed I found myself rooting for her. I loved the incorporation of the Feng Shui principles . Cute quick read.
I loved this book and I'm so happy to see that there's more to come!
The only thing I didn't care for was the epilogue but that's so short that it doesn't have any impact on the book as a whole.
When I read the description I just knew I had to read it. This was a light, fun read which was perfect because I didn't want to read anything too heavy. The story is told primarily through the perspectives of Charlotte, Kwan and Joey with bits from other characters thrown in as well. Personally I'm a huge fan of books with alternating POV's, especially when they flow as nicely as they did in Feng Shui + Charlotte Nightingale.
Charlotte's life is in shambles and she has the absolute worst luck. The plumbing in her apartment is so bad she can barely manage to take a shower before the water cuts off, her boyfriend is a jerk, her bosses are awful and her car is a hunk of junk. Enter Kwan. A delivery man who upon seeing the state of her apartment makes it his mission to improve her chi. By tidying up/rearranging her apartment he aims to diminish the negative energy surrounding her.
Naturally, things get worse before they get better. Through some unfortunate, slightly farfetched and hilarious events Charlotte gains a new outlook on life.
This is the perfect book for summer and I will definitely be purchasing this to add to my shelves!
A fair book, that is an easy read. I kept expecting more though, and it just kinda plodded along. Would recommend, but wish I would have liked the characters more.
DNF @ 13%.
The synopsis sounds so promising that's why I decided to request this book in the first place.
But too bad this book just wasn't for me.
I found it really hard to get into the story. I've already felt so bored even before I finished chapter 1. But I kept reading and hoping that it would get better. Unfortunately, it didn't. In fact, I wasn't even finished chapter 2 because I just couldn't stand it anymore, so I stopped there, at 13%.
Charlotte has a really, really bad luck, but somehow I blame it to herself because she can't stand up for herself. She seems just lets everybody to 'bully' her. Why even bother to date a useless man? Why didn't just she broke up with her jobless boyfriend if he only caused trouble?? Her character alone already pissed me off!
And I don't like how messy she is. I'm a clean-and-tidy kind of person myself, I hate messy girl with messy appartement. And charlotte is exactly the kind of person I hate. And who the hell stapled the hem of their skirt with stapler?!
I absolutely loved this book. It was the first time I've received a book from Netgalley and I couldn't have been more pleased. It was light-hearted and funny. Charlotte is a hot mess. Her boyfriend is an unemployed jerk. She seems completely unrelated to her thoughtless and uppity family. Her job is a joke, as are her employers, who treat her like dirt. She lives in an overly cluttered (aka messy) one bedroom apartment that seldom even has proper running water, and the worse feng shui of all, she lives in dreaded #4. In walks Kwan, who takes it upon himself to "fix" her messy apartment when she's not looking. Her luck seems to go from bad to worse, but then turns around for the better.
I'm not sure if I liked this so much because I was already somewhat intrigued by feng shui, or because I found Charlotte and "Frank," Kwan and his friends to be easily relatable, even if they were a caricature of themselves. Though the whole bit with Dirk was a bit far-fetched, to say the least, it did add a touch more ridiculousness to Charlotte's life which seemed to fit right in. This was a quick, fun summer read.
4 Stars
Charlotte Nightingale’s life is a mess. Her boyfriend is an unemployed Frank Sinatra impersonator, her bosses are cheating the customers, and the plumbing in her building doesn’t last long enough to take a shower. Her luck just keeps getting worse with no end in sight. Enter a mysterious delivery man who keeps moving her stuff. Is it enough to turn her luck around, or is Charlotte stuck in a downward spiral?
I was happily surprised by this book. The characters were well nuanced, the pacing was spot on and the world was created well. But beyond that it was a different kind of fun read. It wasn’t a typical formulaic chick lit, even by the last four chapters I was still wondering exactly how it would end. I enjoyed guessing where the story would go and what the characters would do next. The only thing I didn’t really care for was the end and the epilogue, as the end didn’t match in my mind to what the characters wanted the whole book and the epilogue was just unneeded. This is not a deep and meaningful book, but was a nice quick fun read, which is just what I was looking for. This is a definite summer fun read.
