Description
Lucy's getting very annoyed that her husband Bill and his friend Evan have been working seemingly nonstop on their potentially prize-winning pumpkin catapult. But when the day of the big contest arrives, Evan is nowhere to be found…until a catapulted pumpkin busts open the trunk of the Dodge. Amid the pumpkin gore is a very deceased Evan, bashed in the head and placed in the trunk by someone long before the contest started.
Bill is on the hook for the Halloween homicide—he was the last one to see Evan—so Lucy knows she's got some serious sleuthing to do. The crime's trail seems to always circle back to Country Cousins, the town's once-quaint general store that's now become a big Internet player. Though the store's founder, Old Sam Miller, is long gone, his son Tom and grandson Trey now run the hugely successful company. But whispered rumors say things aren't going well, and Lucy finds that this case may have something to do with an unsolved, decades-old Miller family mystery…
With each new lead pointing her in a different direction, Lucy sees that time is quickly running out. If she wants to spook the real killer, she'll have to step into an old ghost story…

Our library adores Leslie Meier. She has the best covers and the words inside are pretty awesome too!
I pick up Lucy Stone mysteries occasionally and this one is very good. Set in Maine during the early fall, and Tinker's Cove is extending their tourist season by having a pumpkin festival. Murder is on the calendar during the pumpkin hurling contest and Lucy's husband is becoming the prime suspect. The story is interspersed with flashbacks to a previous decade when a woman disappears from town. Lucy comes through finding the murderer and gives insight to abuse of women and the legalization of marijuana. An enjoyable read.
Great cozy mystery. You not only get the current story, but also flashes of the past for the reader. These flashes give you hints to why certain actions are happening. Part of that past is pretty dark, but Lucy Stone and her family keep the mood mostly light in the present..
I have read all titles from the Lucy Stone series. It takes place in small town Maine. The story is well written and the characters well thought out. I have recommended this series to people before. It's a can't miss series.
Candy Corn Murder by Leslie Meier is the perfect read if you're ready for Fall to arrive. The Great Pumpkin Fest is in full swing, complete with pumpkin catapults, an underwater pumpkin carving contest, and a pumpkin boat regatta. But the event isn't going as planned. Someone is destroying the candidates for the title of biggest pumpkin and tearing apart the scarecrow displays. And when the first pumpkins start to fly from their catapults, a corpse is discovered in the trunk of the junky old car that they were using as a target. The book opens with a chilling prologue and, as the plot unfolds, more and more details of a decades old crime are revealed. I enjoyed the contrast between how women of different generations deal with things.
