Description

Empty bottles of liquor litter the floor. Somewhere a little girl is crying. Laura Hallow wakes up covered in sweat, a scream clenched in her throat, half expecting to see her father plummeting to his death, or the glint of malevolence in her mother’s eyes. Years of heavy drinking and a blur of too many nights in strange places have done nothing to dampen the brutal memories of Laura’s past. The only constant has been the fear and disappointment in the eyes of her 11-year-old daughter, Danlyn.

Rome, Georgia is the birthplace of Laura’s nightmares, where shadows of the past still stir. She escaped once, only a shell of a young woman, and now, pregnant and in the grips of withdrawal, she and Danlyn must return to a place where horrible possibilities await and deadly secrets hide in plain sight. When Laura accidentally stumbles upon the mysterious details behind her father’s death, she and Danlyn are thrown into a treacherous world where truths will bring their relationship to the edge of disaster and horrifying realizations will leave Laura questioning everything she thought she knew about her family. The skeletons in the closet have come out to play, uninhibited and claws drawn. Laura will soon learn that some truths are worse than death.

"Sloane's subtle build of tension keeps me on the edge of my seat. The characters and prose set a mood that is on par with Stephen King's classics."

"Having just finished reading Sloane Kady's first novel “Irreparable Deeds”, has left me with a host of thoughts and feelings. All good. My first thought is that this writer knew what she wanted from her story. Stylistically, her writing is what I refer to as the deep groove effect, drawing the reader deeply into the story, intellectually, rationally and emotionally. She accomplishes this through her narrative of the storyline, shifting the perspective subtly to include more than one point of view. Her use of metaphor is also significant to the storyline, adding depth to the emotional connections of the characters to each other, and to the story's historical legacy to the protagonist.

“Irreparable Deeds” is a story about a young woman returning to her hometown to face her demons, bringing with her years of alcoholic abuses, and a young daughter. The continually twisting tale leads the reader through years and years of family disfunction, betrayal and intrigue that begs to be discovered. Sloane unfolds her story with sufficient explanations along the way to begin putting all the pieces of the puzzle together, when the time is right, creating a natural tension which draws the reader deeper into the story, page after page, to discover the next piece of the puzzle.

I read “Irreparable Deeds” with great relish. The author's use of metaphor slips seamlessly within the descriptive narrative, and her use of dialogue to further the story without unnecessary chit chat as filler is also superb. Her story was a delight to read, although admittedly, the story can be said to be a somewhat dark tale, whereupon deeply held, dark family secrets permeate the storyline, shaping the characters within the story in ways one can understand, emotionally. Kudos to Sloane Kady for her excellent work. Her years of work and dedication to the finer details of writing the great American novel are evident."

Laura is no one’s idea of a good mother, she self medicates with alcohol and is leaving her 11 year old daughter to raise herself. But now Laura has to return to Rome, Georgia, the place where all her nightmares began. With her daughter in tow, Laura arrives to find nothing is as she had believed and that her father’s death was not what she had been led to believe either. This book is one hell of a ride! Dark and Gothic, it’s a well written summer thriller to read under the covers

This book covered all the gambits of family relationships. Secrets, Lies, Betrayal, Alcoholism, and Forgiveness. As Laura Hallow returns to her childhood home with her 11 year old daughter Danlyn, as a last resort, to fight her addiction to alcohol. She has used alcohol to block out the childhood she never had because her mother was emotionally unavailable and her father was an alcoholic. Now she is pregnant and no where to go. Can she face those demons and make a life for herself and her daughter. I could not put this down and cannot wait for this author's next book.

Although Laura only wants to forget her terrible childhood she returns with her 11-year-old daughter Danlyn to her mother when she's pregnant and she has nowhere else to go. She hopes her mother's strictness and coldheartedness would help her to stop drinking. But what she finds is worse than everything she could imagine.
Slowly comes to light what has been hidden for years. The truth about her family is a nightmare.

Insane relationships and broken souls wherever you look. And Sloane Kady is able to bring this incredible horror to life.

A creepy book you need strong nerves to read.

I loved everything about this book, the plot twists, the characters, the style of writing.. Each and every one of these twists and turns were so unpredictable and surprising I had to read the whole book in one sitting. It has it all Secrets, Lies, Betrayal. The strength and courage of Laura's determination to uncover the truth is pure brilliance. Cannot wait read more by this author, hard to believe this was her debut.

This novel takes the reader into the ugly side of families, particularly into the rotted heart of a mother whose poisonous soul has left her daughter a wreck. When we meet Laura, she is a drunkard using her daughter and pregnancy to keep her current man. She isn't the most loving, nurturing mother either- and it isn't long before she realizes in order to get clean she will have to return to her home in Georgia where her wicked mother Vivian resides. Seeing the terror she has created in her own daughter ( 11 year old Danlyn) too closely mirrors the evil of her own mother . Returning to her famiy home is going to set off events that will uncover secrets about her father's death and even darker skeletons will rise. Danlyn is shocked to find herself living in a home of wealth compared to the places she has lived all through the years, and even more confused that she has a grandmother she never met. It is one of the most uncomfortable relationships I have read, the time she spends with her grandmother and yet never quite relaxes into a bond. There is nothing more chilling than people like Vivian, who do exist in reality and are a special sort of masked monster.
The novel has so many twists and lies and strange truths that I never could have predicted. It keep me engaged and confused, a healthy recipe for an errie story. This family is a psychological train wreck. It's interesting how controlling people create an atmosphere of terror, the sort of people who make you alter your behavior as you try to keep the peace. Vivian is such a person, possibly a sociopath! Disturbingly good!

This was the first novel of Sloane Kady I've read, but certainly not the last!!!! Irreparable deeds captured my attention from the start, and I couldn't put this book down. The characters of the characters were beautifully written, and I felt as if I knew them by the end of the book. I love reading intelligent mystery novels, and this one certainly qualified!!! Thanks for the opportunity to read this by Netgalley, and I can't wait to read the next one!

Devastatingly, hauntingly beautiful.

Secrets are heavy and when you bury them you often bury yourself.

Irreparable Deeds is a story about many things; secrets and lies - betrayal and addiction - love and forgiveness.

Some people think that hitting rock bottom means there is nowhere left to fall and the only way is back up. That doesn't mean the climb is any easier than the fall.

The author shed light on a dark part of life that everyone wants to gossip about but no one wants the details. This was a very sad but very beautiful story. A story that gives hope to life. That even when you are beat down physically, emotionally and mentally you can overcome and conquer.

This book delivers a message that reaches out and holds you; always keep fighting.
