Description

Sweets the Witch starts off like any other young witch, eating everything her parents give her. As she grows older she starts to only want to eat candy. Even having her teeth fall out doesn't deter her from her goal-to get as much candy as she can on Halloween night to last her all year.

She casts a spell to let children know that she will trade their candy for a toy or special wish of their choice(as long as it's a fair trade for their candy). They can trade it it all or just a bit, the more that they trade the more that they'll get! The children write down a wish or draw or cut out a picture of what they want and put it into Sweet's cauldron pot, then they put their candy next to it and when they wake up they will find their "SweetSwitch". Sweets is a kind young witch who enjoys trading and sharing with children.

Sweets the Witch solves the problem of having too much candy consumed and leftover on Halloween. By asking children to trade their candy for a toy or surprise, Sweets gets the candy she craves and the children get their special wish granted while still enjoying the fun of trick or treating.

First we had Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy, now we have Sweets the Witch. Instead of trading cookies and teeth, she wants candy in exchange for her gifts. A very cute idea to help parents keep their kids away from an excess of Halloween candy without taking any of the fun out of the holiday. As to the content, the rhyme begins with a simple and pleasant beat, but loses some of its oomph by the end.

Pop a wish in the cauldron…

I like this book because Sweets the Witch wants to be good. She finds a way to do spells and still do good deeds. I loved the way the story rhymed. Sweets likes to switch presents for the candy she craves. She really doesn’t want to be scary. But boy did she lose a lot of teeth. This was a great story and I liked reading it to my little sister, Lexi who is 6. Alyssa, age 9

We really enjoyed this story. The illustrations were great and we loved the flow of the story. It goes quickly and puts definite smiles and giggles in the little ones along with a few ewww grosses. Needless to say we would highly recommend this one. Also of note is a suggested interaction for parents to use with the book. This book was received from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

This is an adorable book about a young witch who has same problems as other kids- she likes to eat sweets more than the healthy food- but she her parents do not let her- in her best interests.
The graphics and pictorial representations are very apt, funny and engaging.

The hilarity is one constant factor throughout. And the moral is clear. It sends its message in a very innovative way. And the imagination is worth commendation. And it not only promotes healthy eating, but also glorifies the act of sharing.

I just thought there was more to it, the ending seemed abrupt.
This is going to be a treat for your kid though.

After reading and loving the story, I shared this book with my three boys. All three (ages 9,8 and 5) found something in the story they loved. This is a great book for kids. From its flowing rhyming words, to the illustrations it is sure to hold your children's interest; as well as, teach them a lesson about too much candy.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

This was a very cute way to be educational about children eating too much candy. The pictures and rhyming pattern of the story will keep children entertained while delivering a message. I would recommend this for teachers in classrooms with and parents of young children, especially around Halloween.

The picture book Sweets the Witch is a cute and clever rhyming story of a witch with the nickname Sweets (you guessed), who loves Halloween. It's the time of year where all are out for trick or treat and her favourite treat are sweets, hence the nick.
Her passion for chocolate bars has cost her a healthy tooth or two throughout the years, but she just can't help it. (I know where she is coming from and can hear my dentist's warning.)
Now she has come up with a marvellous plan, as she is a rather kind witch, who likes to share, she has cast a spell and all the boys and girls who want to swap their sweets for toys on Halloween have the chance. All the children need to do, is put a note with the toy of their wish into a little cauldron pot. (The book offers a link to the author's webside, where parents can download a picture of the pot and then print it out, but why not use and old pot instead or create your own magic (cardbord) box? There are lots of creative options and of course, the children can get involved, too.)
On Halloween night the witch will switch the sweets into the wished for present. (I'm not sure of the witches suggestion, it could be anything including a pony, as that's surely what my younger daughter would have in mind at the moment.)

Generally speaking, I think it's a wonderful idea, and it will inspire children to think more careful about all the trick or treat sweets and it offers a good chance for teachers and parents to discuss how sugar will cause problems for healthy teeth in the long run and hopefully Santa and the Easter Bunny consider copying her smart plan. (And in case the witch will feel a bit unwell after consuming an incredible amount of sweets on Halloween, as a responsible parent, I'm, of course, happy to help out.)

The rhymes are cheerful as are the colourful illustrations and Witch Sweets is a hugely likeable character. A book children will enjoy to read and certainly a very good idea. Highly recommended.

I really couldn't get behind this. Having the little witch eating candy, even though her teeth have fallen out, seems like the wrong message to send to kids. It's nice that she believes in fair trades, but I don't think this is a book I'll be buying.
