The Dear Dragon series is made up of several books that are easy readers. They use site vocabulary that is printed in the back of the book. It reminds me of the books I learned to read with.
In this book, it is time to begin evening preparations for bedtime. The boy needs to help his mother take out the trash, do his schoolwork, take a bath, brush his teeth and finally read a bedtime story with his dad. The type of things every child would do. These Beginning-to-Read books capture the imaginations of beginning readers and help them on their way to independent reading. They could also be read aloud to young children who are not able to read yet. A great addition to a family library or a primary classroom.
I like this book and I love the illustrations with the appealing, brightly coloured dragon. The vocabulary and sentence structure is great, the activities and evening routine very real. It would have been better if 'this' was used less - used as a substitute for vocabulary for which the young reader is not yet prepared.
There is nothing which is American-only, so I will look to buy this for my English school.
The Dear Dragon series is appropriate for independent first grade readers. It is meant to be simple with easy to read words. It's Bedtime, Dear Dragon is as solid as the others in the Dear Dragon series.
While I was reading this, I got a picture in my head of two kids with their heads bent over this book reading together. I think this is something I will see in real life. The kids like these books by Margaret Hillert. I think it's the success they have when they read these books. They are the sort of books that keep beginning readers interested in reading more.
